The guys react to the San Antonio Spurs' landing of Chris Paul and what that means for not only the Spurs’ roster rebuild, but also the career progression of Victor Wembanyama.

Here's the deal. The 2024 FA class is doo doo. The 2025 FA and draft class is stacked. CP is a one year rental and Stephon Castle gets a year's tutelage at the Chris Paul school of Point Guard. All the players will benefit from this and Paul gets a chance to audition for the league he still has it before he goes to another team. It's win-win. 2025 off-season will be when the Spurs strike. Anybody who suggests the Spurs should cash in now and rush the rebuild is misguided.

That all sounds nice, but everyone claimed that they were tanking last year for this draft. Now they traded the 8th pick away. They acquired an ancient Chris Paul, who as was pointed out, will miss half of the year being injured. How many seasons of 50-60 losses do you think Wemby is going to put up with?
@barbarooza8408

@@MrOctober44 they didn't tank last year, they just sucked. The plan always was to see how the players fit around Wemby first season. 2nd season will be much of the same, with the odd veteran here and there. CP3's value is as much for his mentorship and off-court leadership as his own-court production. Given Wemby has preached patience from the fanbase, I would say he is fine with one more season. He's still only 20!

Wemby is so good people forgot there was a reason the Spurs got the number 1 pick to begin with. The Spurs were a bad team. They didn't tank in Wemby's first season. 100% agree next off season is the time to make bold moves. CP will do wonders for Castle's development.

@@MrOctober44they got the player they really wanted in the draft, Stephon Castle (if not Sheppard). He gets a year of mentoring from one of the smartest and greatest PGs ever. They still have Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassel. There’s no promise Dillingham will pay off, if he does the trade looks stupid, if not they got 2 firsts for a role player (or he’s out of the league, his size makes him very boom or bust potential). Players will want to play with Wemby, and the spurs are not going to be as bad with CP3 being able to get Wemby good looks, and Castle can at the very least play elite defense.

Totally agree, this take was really bad. Pop and RC methodically planned having the best shot for Wemby. Now they have a generational talent and tons of assets. They have a boat load of cap space next year. Fire them? Bring in new guys after their plan worked? These guys are playing the long game and now Spurs are primed to have a long run at championships. There is plenty of evidence that trying to speed things up doesn't work. It's so ironic to me that everyone pumps up OKC all the time but are so short sighted and can't respect what/how OKC got where they are.

Wosny looking at this from a short-sided perspective. Stocking up picks, by trading a #8 pick in a draft that’s considered one of the worst in years, is a long-term move to acquire assets for potential future trades. Not to mention they have ATL’s unprotected 1st round pick in addition to their own in a stacked draft class next year. Also hearing SA’s is interested in making a move for Booker if the suns play like shit this year and decide to blow it up. All of these future assets make sense for long term moves in Wemby’s second year

@@MrOctober44 it’s a great question, and I’d guess he’d be pissed if they aren’t in the playoffs by year 3. With that being said, the way they finished last year I think they have a good shot at making the play-in this year. Biggest difference for me long term is I feel like Wemby genuinely wants to be in San Antonio. And because of the assets SA has acquired the past few off seasons, at some point they’re gonna cash those in for a player they think will fit with Wemby. These dudes at the Ringer smoking good shit, they still think like the NBA is operating in 2008 when no one cares about draft assets… let dumb teams swing for the fences and give up all their picks. Smart teams like the spurs tank, trade valuable players to short sighted teams, draft wemby and have a surplus of picks to replenish talent, we see teams like the nuggets hit a wall because when you win a ring, your role players look for bigger contracts and you can’t pay everyone. Then you’re too good to draft anyone cause you’re always drafting in the late first round. The way the Spurs have set it up, they have a lot of picks to bring in top talent when the spurs will be championship contenders.

These guys have no idea what they’re talking about. They want the spurs front office to make rash, short-sighted decisions. Could they have gone all in on getting someone like Trae young? Sure but even then they’re a play-in team who’s given up future assets. 2025 will be a big draft for the Spurs. They’ll potentially have 2 lottery picks and have a lot of flexibility during free agency. If they don’t make big additions then, I’ll understand the criticism but for now, they’re playing it smart. The young guys will keep growing and be ready to meaningfully compete in a year or 2.

@@britaneejustinmosley1900Yeah, but Spurs are on a similar path as OKC: - 22 wins. - 24 wins or something. - 40 wins. - And last season, first seed. Beginning their serious contention window. Spurs just finished that second 20 something wins year and could get closer to the 40 wins OKC had during their 3rd year. (Probably around 33-35 for the Spurs next year). The timeline is pretty similar. And even if they need one more yea to get there, it would still be a fast and successful rebuild for the long term, while keeping their assets intact. Next year’s FA and Draft class are where the Spurs want to go hard. Keep your options open and your assets until then, build organically with one of the most experienced and best mentors in the league, and be the Behemoth at the negotiation table when it matters next summer. The Spurs one of the most well-ran organizations in team sport history for a reason.
