Which is better: Thermal or Night Vision?
Thermal is absolutely better than night vision when it comes to locating and identifying targets. It does have it's downsides, but when it comes to the sheer ability to locate, even in the absence of light, makes it a clear winner in our minds.
But...rest assured: We also run night vision. To us this isn't a discussion about which is most important, we think that if you are going to take the darkness seriously, you should consider night vision and a handheld or helmet mounted 640x480 core thermal monocular.

Firefighter here, we have a thermal imaging camera on the truck and it's infinitely more useful than a PVS 14 or digital NV would be. We've used it to ID which doors have fire on the other side, where someone was laying earlier, which cars were recently driving by the engine and wheel heat, and even how many people were in a vehicle when the victims were ejected. Once I even used it to avoid stepping in dog crap.

@@kyurise6685 Not sure, but as with everything our city does, we probably overpaid because of purchasing agent gave the bid to a buddy who marked everything up and skinned the profits later.

You can also use it to see the liquid level in various fuel tanks. I have been retired for a few years but I wrote several grants for my department and the costs of the units we got were about 10k to 20k depending on model and size.

I accidentally used it to touch dog crap. I was walking through the local common land at night and noticed a heat source under some grass. I thought it was a mouse so went closer and closer but I didn't move and I just poked it with my finger........it was dog crap.

Thermal and night vision are amazing, thermal is just insane especially with newer units

Own both, completely agree. Night vision will help you identity your targets and be able to get around in the dark. But if I'm using night vision outside at night, I'm going to have my thermal monocular around, as well. BTW, don't forget, thermal vision does not allow you to see IR lights or IR lasers.

Thanks for the insight on thermal and IR. So, I just need one more answer to the riddle. Night vision will absolutely detect an infrared emitting LED, correct? I just need a simple yes or no, thanks. The webs refuse to help me get the answer on my own or maybe I no longer know how to use search engines. I definitely could be losing my touch.

Exactly, I never upgraded my pvs-14 to bino, instead I run my pvs-14 on my non dominate eye and thermal IRAY RICO on top of my night gun. Best combination hands down, it will dominate someone with NV even if they have the biggest baddest binos or quads. I see you in the bushes. Night hunters have know this for a long time. You let the cat out of the bag.

I've watched coyote and hog hunters for years. The hunters scan the fields for prey with a mono or bino thermal scope in order to set up their night vision or thermal vision mounted rifle scopes.

A Day/NV scope gives u more flexibility if u like to hunt day as well as night, whereas thermal is best for night. I use a thermal monocular for spotting, then NV scope for id and shooting. Good combo.

I use both. IR can be defeated just by staying still and thermal can be defeated with casualty blankets. “REMEMBER; IR will alert others to your presence & give your position away so try not to use it. Only use natural light during tactical operations.”

They both have their advantages and dis-advantages but on the lower end I think night vision gives you a much clearer picture to identify possible targets not just a pixelated mass with little detail like the cheaper thermal scopes offer. You can see through glass with night vision as well and detect infrared light emitted by others using night vision, that doesn't put you in an advantage over them it just evens things out whereas thermal does not see any light source including infrared. It's really best to have both as in a night vision scope and thermal binoculars or a thermal monocular. Now on the high end thermal is a lot more detailed but still has some limitations.

I have both but used Nightvision for years. It works and I’ve killed many predators with it, but after going thermal I have know doubt whatsoever that I have missed many opportunities over the years when an animal didn’t step out of the woodline or a brush pile. There’s no hiding from thermal

When we hog/coyote hunt we run NV on our non dominant eye to manuever and identify and run thermal on our rifles. Just what works best for us

So, if you can only have 1, would you get a PSV 14 with lazer on the rifle or a $4,000 thermal clip-on?

Usually night vision first AFTER your rifle is squared away. By squared away: Quality rifle, Quality sling, Quality optic WITH NV settings, white light, ammo, mags, and training to a solid foundation. THEN buy night vision. THEN a laser/IR illuminator. After that, train with the PVS-14, build a good foundation. Once your finances are at a healthy spot again, the thermal begins to make a lot of sense. OR save up the $5-7K needed and hit up the Arkayne team. They can help you nail exactly what you need the first time. Folks do it all sorts of ways. The key is: avoid the mistakes, because buying the wrong unit can set you back thousands. We can help avoid that!

is it possible to defeat thermal imaging? pretty clear from combat in Ukraine, that if you dont have thermal, you will be killed by someone that does,

Yes you can. But you work for it. Fog, rain, tall grass, certain clothing can mask thermal signature. If you have time with your units, you often still can pick out heavily camouflaged objects or people.

A barrier in the way helps, even a pane of glass completely blocks thermal while not blocking night vision. You could just prop up a tarp vertically on piles and hide behind it. Thermal is hands down the winner in detection though.

I think about that all the time gaming with my friends. If I had a gaming channel I’d be cancelled in a month or 2. I get excited and say dumb shit
