It's time to take care of that leak! I wanted to do this before the Moab trip, and I'm running out of time. So, today was the day! In this video, I change out my thermostat and housing assembly. I didn't drain the radiator for this, and then I show how I bled the air out of the cooling system with help of a spillproof funnel.
🔔 Please SUBSCRIBE if you want to see my videos! 🔔
Here are the parts I mentioned:
EPAuto Spill Proof Radiator Coolant Filling Funnel Kit:
amzn.to/2MJad4f
MOPAR 5184651AH - OEM Part - Thermostat and Housing:
amzn.to/2o28CbK
Here's what MY manual says about the coolant I need:
MS-12106 OAT (MS-90032)
The engine cooling system must be protected
with a high-quality antifreeze coolant to provide
proper corrosion protection and to protect
against engine overheating. A solution of 50%
OAT (Organic Additive Technology) coolant that
meets the requirements of Chrysler Material
Standard MS-12106 and 50% water is recommended.
Refer to “Maintenance Procedures” in
“Maintaining Your Vehicle” for proper coolant
selection.
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH COOLANT YOUR SPECIFIC YEAR NEEDS. It's confusing I know. Check your owners manual!

Did this today. Worked great. One improvement. After you reconnect the hose to the thermostat housing. Remove the other end off the radiator. Refill the hose from there and bleed the last bit of air from the housing. Reconnect. Less air to burp.

I just had to replace the thermostat, radiator hoses, and flush the coolant in my daughter's Jeep. After watching your video I ran out and bought one of those no spill funnels before I started the job! What a terrific invention!! It made bleeding the air from the system so much easier. Thanks for the video.

Just below 70k on my 2014 JEEP JK. Live in south east michigan, saw steam coming from the hood. Radiator cap was cold. Few friends suggested air in the line from a faulty radiator cap. Been running my jeep without a radiator cap for about 30 minutes,no funnel, and keeping an eye on temp and bubbles. Great video, thank you.

Great step by step video. I watched several. Some bled at bleeder but didn't "burp". Others just "burped". You did both and that's what I plan to do. Of note when rinsing with water I usually cover the alternator. Sure, rain/street water can get up there (usually not as much flow) but I've replaced alternators on other vehicles as a result of alternator corrosion from hosing down engine bay without covering alternator. Thank you!

Perfect instructions! Just finished. Got the funnel and everything. Only thing...when I took the funnel off with coolant still in it...at the bottom of funnel, coolant came out big time. I guess from the radiator. It was a blur and coolant got all over my arms. Yes, I am not a motor head so don't make fun of me. :)

Thank you for putting this video together. You did an amazingly good job at videoing everything....very good illustrations ! I have been dealing with my wife's 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport with 3.6L engine. The heater hasn't been up to par these past few months, and she took it to a repair shop and they 1st flushed the heater core and topped off the fluid. It acted up again and didn't provide heat like it has in the past, so she took it back in to the same shop and they flushed the entire radiator, block ect......I think we have determined that the cooling system is clean and has new OAT type coolant in it. You are correct about NOT mixing HOAT with OAT type coolants, and to be clear the 2014 Jeep Wranger also uses OAT Type coolant. If mixing occurs it will cause a gelling effect on the coolant----very bad ! I called the repair person and he and I spoke about the attempts to repair and he said it may very well be the heater core. I've used my Fluke laser heat detecting gun and the heater hoses are getting hot all the way to the firewall---on both inlet and outlet sides of the heater core. I would suppose you changed the thermostat housing mainly due to the housing leaking, and didn't change it due to an "engine code" ? I noticed that you didn't use a sealant in addition the the rubber "O-ring" gasket for the thermostat housing. Did you find the hairline crack in the housing by chance ? By the way I love the American Flag in your yard !

Have had cooling issues in my wrangler since 2016. Tried everything, even had Faricy Boys look at it. My normal operating temps ranged from 220 to 245 daily to and from work at Garden of the Gods to Stetson Hills Monday through Friday. Ran across your vid and wouldn’t you know it. No more issues after following your vid step by step. Now temps are 206 to 220. Appreciate it

I'm having that same issues with my jeep. Had faricy boys do a thermostat and coolant flush. And it helped alot. But still regularly see it go up to 228-230 and just randomly it'll go up to 235 or more then right back down. It's gotta be air bubbles in there.

I have the same year and have had the infamous coolant smell since new as do many others I know who own the Jk's. I've had 2 rads replaced, oil cooler, therm. Housing. Timing chain cover, three pressure tests and as of today I can still smell coolant and lose it over about three months. It still passes the pressure test too. I've gone over hoses, checked the oil cap and oil for coolant.... All clean. its a pain in the ass but I've learned to just live with it.

The only thing I didn't see you mention in that list of things you've replaced is the overflow container. I actually did a video on replacing mine because it was leaking. I'd be surprised if that's not your problem, because of everything you mentioned this could still seep a little bit and you not be able to see it visually and it will still pass all the pressure tests because that's not part of the overall pressurized system. Just a thought.

Great video. Would love to see you do a video related to your experiences with the JK's wide coolant temperature swings. I see 200 to 230+ regardless of ambient temps and altitude. I've never driven a modern vehical where the coolant temp gauge swings a bit above the center point when everything is running right. Seems like there are a lot of posts about this on the forums. Any opinions?

Just a point of interest: There is no heater core valve! Just dampers. therefore it does not matter where the temperature dial is set...The fluid is always circulating through the heater coil...
@vertisce2845
@vertisce2845 Жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, your vehicle will do this on it's own over time. Fluid comes and goes from the over flow tank and it has it's own air vent to allow air to be released out of the system.

@DeathScouter
@DeathScouter 4 жыл бұрын
Great video as usual, but you do not have to turn on the "heat". Coolant flows through that heater core whether you turn that knob or not. When you turn that knob, you're only moving the BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR inside the air ducts to divert air around or over the heater core to get hot/cold air inside the cabin.... it doesn't change whether or not coolant flows in the heater core.
@charlesincharge1245
@charlesincharge1245 2 жыл бұрын
Some people stick to turning on the heat because some vehicles have shut off solenoids that prevent the heater core from circulating with the heat off.

Hey CPO, thanks for the video, been a great help trying to burp my system as well. One question, how do you get the coolant in the funnel to stay so calm over 210°? Anytime I get near there, the funnel starts to boil over and overflow, and continues to even after I shut the Jeep off. Any tips on how to stop the boil over? Noticed you had yours up to 219 and still calm as a lake. : )
@manwithnoname734
@manwithnoname734 Жыл бұрын
It boils over because when the radiator cap is off the system is at atmospheric pressure therefore the coolant will start boiling around 205-215 depending on your altitude. When the cap is on the atmospheric pressure is much different and the boiling point will be roughly 40-50 degrees higher.
@overheadcam32

Why do these jeeps run so hot to begin with? 205-220 .
@manwithnoname734
@manwithnoname734 Жыл бұрын
@@overheadcam32 220 really isn't that hot for coolant. The coolant in my Cummins regularly reaches 230+ when I'm working her. The temp of the engine shouldn't rise too much if the cooling system is working properly.
