In this video we teach you the meaning of each thermostat color and how they are used in your home. These thermostat color codes are the standard colors for HVAC systems. The Red wire (Rc or Rh) provides power to the thermostat. The Yellow wire (Y) is for cooling. The White (W) is for heat. The Green wire (G) is for fan control. The Blue wire (C) is typically for common wires.
This thermostat wiring color code convention is what 90% of HVAC systems use. If you have a heat pump this video will be a better explanation: • Nest Heat Pump Wiring ...

I would recommend getting the Nest Gen 3: amzn.to/3urAZ4e or the Nest E: amzn.to/3qSRh3L if you don't have a common wire because in most cases they don't require a common wire so it will save you the trouble of adding one or adding a transformer. However if you do go with the 2020 model: amzn.to/3sssF2y this video shows you how to add a common wire transformer to get it to work: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r89lnsmfmMjRdZ8.html The 2020 Nest Thermostat always requires a common wire for installation. These videos show you how to install the Nest 3rd Generation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7d1arKWs6zHeZs.html and the Nest E Thermostat: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLaknqiH1q-7qnk.html

Hi there, I have a 3 wire system; red (with the thing metal connector thingy), green, and black. It is a ct100 thermostat. It started marking noise one night and the only way to stop it was to remove it from the wires. I reconnected it (i think the correct way) and the heat works, but now the furnace takes a long time to kick on. I can hear it turn on (like an electric sound) but it takes like 40 seconds after clicking to actually turn on. I put the wires like so: black into W, red into RH, Green into G. Is that correct? I also tried testing the wires with a multimeter and the black and green show power, but the red doesn't. Can I check in the basement/furnace room somewhere to see if that's the issues?

Hi, have a question. I have an old Carrier programmable thermostat that seems to be using only 2 of 6 wires sticking out of my wall. It uses a red colored wire connected to O/W2 and a green colored wire connected to Y1/W2. It works, but I want to replace it with a smart thermostat. The other 4 unidentified wires sticking out of the wall are 1 x Blue, 1 x White and 2 x Black. How can I identify which colored wire is what? FYI, all the wires are coming from a Carrier Packaged Unit 48DP012. Thanks in advance.

Never jumper a wire from R and C or else your furnace will blow!!! Well your fuse will blow. Since you have extra unused wires, you can use that wire as your C wire. Make sure both sides are connected to C on the furnace board and on the thermostat.

Help... I have an ancient Trane thermostat & Furnace. It is 4 wire-R,Y,G,W. When I try and connect the new Honeywell TPro 6 that I have, it has a blue wire, I had it working but now it stopped working. I have connected the blue wire to the C (common) on the blower and it has a white wire already connected there. It was working great but when I changed the filter, and turned the power off, it stopped working. It says AC Turned on but nothing works. Equipment says it is in a "perpetual standby" mode. So I connected the old Trane 4-wire thermostat back up and it works fine. I tried to disconnecting the blue wire on the TPro6, but the thermostat went dark without the blue wire so it obviously needs it.

With a 7 wire hook up you most likely have heating or cooling system with two stage heating or two stage cooling or both. These two extra colors could be any color, however you would need to see what terminals they are connected to on your existing thermostat then transfer them over to the new thermostat for staged heating or cooling. If you don't know what terminal they are on you can pop the cover on your HVAC system and take a look at the control board and it will show you what terminal they should be connected to on your HVAC system.
