One of the best vids on KZfaq about home security. Absolutely spot on. Great content. Only thing I’d mention is 3* cylinder locks for that added protection as opposed to 1 or 2 stars. Thanks again Roger - great work as usual.

Those safes are incredibly easy to break into. My sister recently locked a title a vehicle in one and needed to get it out. I used a lock pick to pick it and didn't even need to provide tension. Just pushed up on the pins and used the pick to turn the key. Many also can be opened by just bumping them on the top. I'd suggest getting a yolink system at the very least. They're surprisingly great at notifying you to doors and windows are opened, motion etc.

Worth making an excel spreadsheet of your valuables too, just make, model and price. 1) you’d be surprised of the value once you add it all up and it’s worth telling your insurance company the total 2) makes justifying any claims in the future much easier. It’s a bit of a task to start from scratch but keeping it up to date isn’t.

Some great advice there, although I'd suggest having cameras installed by a professional. Some of the ready to go kits aren't bad quality, but there's more to it than running the cables in and plugging it in. Positioning so the IR doesn't blind the camera at night is important, setting the right frame rates to get the most bang for your buck, and even just picking the right place to put them is important. Paying someone a few hundred quid for something you think you can do yourself pales in comparison to finding you've been robbed and the cameras you fitted yourself haven't got any useful footage because all you can see is your white wall reflecting all the IR light. The cheaper kits also sometimes have a habit of being incompatible with new cameras, so if one part fails and they've stopped making it, the whole lot has to go. Great video all the same.

What about pet doors, and dismal state of Internet of Things (IoT) security? Many of the IoT devices like the devices showed here, have hard coded 'back doors' so that the manufacturer can get into the device if needed. Made a big issue several years ago, and not all vendors have made the required changes. Really good information here.

I suggest 2 different types of cameras. Type 1 records constantly to a HDD. Type 2 is a clip recording wi-fi camera and offers live views as well as sends alerts to cell phone. Place the type 1 cameras in the best spots to capture faces, even if the cables are showing. Then place the type 2 cameras in a more difficult place to get to as they only need power. Type 2s will alert you to motion and will be harder to disable, while type 1 will have it all recorded for review.

Ring door bells are only good for parcel deliveries. Burglars / kids will hoodie up before walking up to the door and when they see the ring doorbell they just knock on the door to see if you are actually in. If there is no answer they will go around the side or back and break in.

If you dont answer there's no bloody point in having a Ring doorbell. They dont know if your indoors or sitting on a beach somewhere. That doubt can be all that needed to get them to move along. Also you can call a neighbour to see if anyone's hanging around.

I have an intruder alarm, cctv, 2 dogs etc. Best of it is there’s f all worth nicking. If you tell the insurance company you have an alarm they can refuse a payout if it wasn’t set when the incident occurred. Modern alarms have a clock and a memory. Excellent videos thanks.

A 3 star not a 2 star cylinder is what you want. It should be upto the TS007 standard and show 3 stars on the cylinder AND the British Kitemark. As for the glass, laminated is a definite improvement but will only slow a burglar down unless you're installing something as thick as 10.4/10.8mm or thicker. If security is critical you can ask the glazing company to supply the glazing with anti-bandit film. It comes in different grades right upto being bomb proof - much more effective than laminated glass but you'll need deep pockets. You can by Secure By Design letterboxes nowadays. CCTV is a great idea but how expensive is it to store the footage in the cloud in case the burglar decides to take the NVR?
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
All good advice but the 4x4 laminated takes around half a dozen good hits with a hammer to make a hole in.
@BODGE71
@BODGE71 4 жыл бұрын
@@SkillBuilder 4x4? - are you referring to 8mm laminated glass?After the initial break with a hammer or brick they kick it through and although thicker laminated glass puts up much better resistance, the problem with thick laminated glass is the extra weight the door leaf has to carry. This is why security film is a good idea but it can be very expensive depending on which grade you specify. Look up "3M security film" on KZfaq to see a variety of grades of security film.

I would be carful adding additional locks on any windows or doors as this could make your house a trap for your kids and family in the event of a fire. I leave all the keys in the door locks at all times for this very reason. Possessions can be replaced but my family's lives can't. I'd prefer the burglers to come and take what they want when we are away and have new from my insurance.
