Is there a more popular performance engine layout than a 6-cylinder? Possibly, but there is definitely a lot of strange 6-cylinders out there.

Sam made a comment about the Lycoming O-540 series (8.87L) and the Continental O-550 series (9.05L), but Lycoming also made a short lived O-580 series (9.55L) originally slated for the Cessna 206 Stationair. It had many issues, Cessna went with the 540 instead. After the issues were fixed, the 580 found use in some aerobatic airplanes like the Extra 330.

That big Jimmy 478 (7,8 liter) would be an awesome unit to come across! That is putting out some pretty serious torque, for a gas engine. The VW WR6 was just coming into being, when I gave up being a VW mechanic. Consequently, I never laid my hands on one. I hear that the 3,2 liter version of that motor can be a real screamer. The shot of the guy driving the Detroit powered truck is good. You don't see many people double-clutching shifts anymore! That McLaren looks like something that Chris Harris would have fun throwing around on a nice tight track. Btw...it's good to finally see the face behind the wonderful voice that narrates these ever-entertaining videos! Keep up the good work, my friend.

@@charlesball6519 Actually MTU makes the 2 stroke Detroits now just rebranded as MTU's. I think they purchased the rights or something like that but they are still made. Next time you get to hating on the EPA check out the Great Smog of London or the Great Smog of 1952 and you can see what happens when industry is left unchecked. I'll give you the punchline of the story between 4000-12,000 people died and over 100,000 were made sick. It's not the EPA's fault that automotive engineers took the laziest cheapest possible way to make their engines compliant. I'm no fan of EGR, SCR, and DEF but I am a fan of breathing as I'm sure you are as well. So direct your ire towards the Corporations who would rather pay their CEOs 10-50 million/year than spend that money on researching a better way of meeting guidelines that allow us to breathe.

The angle of 120 between banks in a V6 is also the combustion angle of any 6 cylinder engine. The smoothest in power delivery in any V engine, excluding the twin I6 V12, but only defeated by the I6 in its glorious balance. The V6 is basically an I3 stuck together with practically the same rocking motion and rough running I3.

Chrysler 3.9 is interesting. 90 degree bank angle, with this odd crank pin split, and they came with a 2 barrel carb in earlier versions, and well as its pushrod design. Based off the chrysler 318 small block. Later chrysler made a 3.3L and 3.8L V6 for the minivans and jeep wrangler. They were up degrees with a 60 degree crank split, but was a pushrod engine and was the basis for the 2.7 DOHC, 3.5, and 4 liter V6 engines.

One weird 6 cyl to me, is the 4.3L v6 from GM, it is a small block v8 with the front 2 cylinders chopped off, and it lasted from the 80's all the way to early 2010's, because that's the thing, it is fairly modern, and I haven't seen such displacement on a v6 in recent times
@turbo8454
@turbo8454 3 жыл бұрын
Actually Buick started that trend on the car side. They chopped two cylinders off of the 215 V8 and made the 90 degree V6 in the fall of '61. That engine, with refinements over the years, lasted until 2009. Detroit diesel did the same thing in 1957, modular V engines. GMC later ('66 model year) added two cylinders to the 478 V6 and produced a 637 V8.

Great video, but you missed a few. Ford did a V6 in the Capri, Chevrolet did the boxer style in the Corvair , Commer's common knocker and my favorite the Foden 6 cylinder 2 stroke diesel. These are just to name a few of the unusual 6's.

The Commer TS3 is a 3-cylinder with 6 pistons
@davidstephens1092

@@VisioRacer I would agree that it is named as a 3 cylinder engine, however every dictionary definition that I have ever seen, defines an "engine cylinder" as a cylinder that "a" piston moves in. So the question is did the manufactures have the right to call it a 3 cylinder or should they have called it an engine with 3 sets of conjoined cylinders. Either way it is a strange 6 piston engine.

Dear Ol’ Dad had a 1979 GM RTS II, it had a Detroit in it, I have no clue if it was 4 or 6 cylinder, V or Inline, or even if it was 2 or 4 stroke, I was too young, all I know is it was sideways in the back and the transmission went at an angle to the right rear corner behind the tire to a transfer case, forward to another case above the axle, and finally into the axle…the tire kicked shit up into the transmission and broke the seals. It leaked all the fluid out and burned up all the gears. We were stranded in New Mexico for 2 1/2 months and got a new transmission, only for the original 1979 airlines to pop in California 6 or so years later and drop all 29,000 pounds flat on the concrete where it probably still sits…at Willow Springs International Raceway…

6:50 They don't call them "Screamin' Jimmies" for nothing! [Detroit Diesel Allison used to be a GM subsidiary] Too bad about V-6s of < 4.0 L displacement; they all have a farty, dyspeptic exhaust note. Boxer-6s and inlines, OTOH, sound like burning silk - just gorgeous. US truck and agricultural equipment maker International Harvester built 7.3 L and 8.2 L inline-6s which, in a good state of tune, had a booming sound all their own.

The biggest difference between lycoming and the automotive boxers is the need for a transmission to drive the prop. The carb is on the bottom of the oil pan via an updraft carb, they have 2 plugs per cyl, 2 mags, vacuum pump and everything is saftey wired and air cooled. The pistons are huge, they are like 2 of my fists wide.
