I checked your link and was surprised to find these are very affordable. For anyone interested in a smaller size, Home Depot has a very good price on 1/2 x 6 when you buy 900 - a little over 3 cents each. "Writing" with a soldering iron instead of ink solves the problem with fading in the sun.

yes, use a woodburning tool. I also just painted all my sticks black like chalk paint, will use an oil based marker to write, then spray with a polyurathane so can reuse. i like the look of the black. the white sticks look trashy to me.

I've been cutting down old used window blinds to size and using a paint marker on them. Works a treat and they're reusable.

Do they hold up? Windows block most UV rays, so I'm curious if they can take full sun without the windows protecting them.

@dirtcheapgarden9454 I’ll have to try paint markers! I liked using the metal blinds cut up! But sharpee didn’t cut it. It was nice to not have shards of plastic to clean up if the labels got left in the ground all year which has happened with any plastic labels left in the ground over winter. I’ve used wood markers and they can mold especially when starting seedlings and tend to decompose. Thanks for mentioning the paint markers.

@@kelseystengel8241 I re did 59 labels 20 times bcuz Sharpie is now a rip off watered down junk. cut aluminum cans, and scrape name on. Or use etcher. Lasts decades. I will resort 2 writing a note in an empty water bottle b4 i go out buy paint sticks. Sharpie is robbing cistomers blind with snake oiled markers & i can see why. Customer dont have a clue how 2test a permanent marker or what it is even for. Qsrlt Channel I saw had Disneyland testing& thought of some interesting tests, however on a less pre school aspect whole point of a permanent marker is if it lasts & is it permanent or not. Sharpie is selling watery markers featherlight. They have watered down smell. They used 2b heavy, filled with ink and were actually crazy permanent & would last over a decade. Now they wash off in a couple rains. Absolutely proposterous rip off. I have had 2 re do 50 garden labels 20 plus times. Some washed cmpletsly off. Maybe mine are counterfeit? Sharpie also makes colors so soooooo light &faint that u can baaaaarely even see them on surfaces when new! Incorrect testing lets these criminals get away with a snake oil product that stabs their customers in thback deliberately 4cash. Weight thmarkers 2compare them. Hopefully some1 out therw will test these on dffrnt surfaces for staying power. These backstab companies can also make half thcolors with lousy ink, u have 2b slick, accurate & thorough 2peoperly test & know how a product is supposed 2b engineered& perform. I could double my profits on Sharpies if I used an ink chamber 1/4 the size. Not1 review I read even addresses this. Quit 5 star reviewing criminals.

I’ve. Been using bright colored duct tape with paint pens. I fold a piece over the trellis or a stake. It works quite well.

Use a pencil to write. They don't ever fade and are uv resistant. You can also get throwaway scraps from places that cut mini blinds:Lowes homedepot etc.

Do they fall apart or hold up to the UV? Windows block most UV rays, so blinds are surprisingly insulated from UV rays.

@@2MinuteGardenTips i am using the same ones after 3 years. Usually the plants cast a little shade onto them but they still hold up in bright Texas sun. Besides, reusing trash before the dump, they are really the most ideal tag. Pencils store well for a season outside so i never need to go far to make a label. You can cut them any length and even width for little seed pots. I use longer ones on translucent ibc totes to point to the water level to see how much rain i used/gained. Colored pencils work on them too.

When using a vinyl plant tag (or cut up cheap blinds) with a sharpie I stick the writing into the soil. The soil protects it from the light and the marker doesn't degrade in the soil. I also write what is planted in the beds on my garden map, but for the most part I have the characteristics of every plant memorized. I only really need the tags for seeded trays and I lay them flat name side down on top of the tray.

I do that, too, and it doesn't matter. They still fade. Even completely buried in the soil, they disappear completely within about 3 months. I think the UV still penetrates through, and all the rain we get takes its toll. The plastic tags just don't hold up.

Nice!👍There is a guy I watch who lives in the UK. He does budget garden and uses the paint stirring sticks. He wraps his in a tape...bright yellow...maybe duct tape. I think he just adds another layer of tape to reuse the stick. Great idea.🙂

Good idea. I always used large popsicle stick like pieces but the issue with them as well as the paint paddles your using is the water the water from rain and watering garden as well as the soil moisture eat them up quickly , but it is a great affordable idea I’ve just found that they rot quickly

The other problem with most labels is you can't see them without bending over. These will fit large text I will be able to see from above.

I've started putting furnace tape on the wooden labels, and writing on them with a ballpoint pen. The scratches don't fade.

I have seen other gardener KZfaq channels do something similar. They used metal plant tags where they scratched in the writing with a nail. They cut up old aluminum soda cans or used some old copper flashing with tin snips for the metal tags and hung the tags on pieces cut up from wire hangers. Copper flashing is kinda pricey, but I hadn't thought of furnace tape, I might have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip. Though, I just searched on Amazon for "metal plant tags" and some are quite reasonably priced - I saw one for 120 aluminum tags (1 x 3.25 inches) for approx. $17.

Use a #2 or pencil… they are water resistant, fertilizer resistant and last for years on the tag. Try to find tags which are mat as opposed to shiny slick though they will work too. As an orchid grower and have folks who grow orchids and other collectibles that you have 10+ years, a pencil works well. I have heard oil or wax based pencils are good too but it seems to me wax or oil would just wipe off or smear. But they use wax based pencils on china.. ie China markers ??? But give heavy duty plastic labels a look - look for them in horticultural or greenhouse supply stores. You can also look to do your own. They come in all kinds of sizes in terms of length and width. I sometimes glue several together use a water proof type gorilla or other type glue or adhesive. Plan on doing as many as you can afford to do at one time as some of these glues, adhesives etc will harden quickly once opened.

I started saving the wooden Icecream sticks and used them to label my seedlings. Well, the moisture caused molding and the wood totes eventually.

They will work and last longer than the plastic tags, but they don't solve my problem of having to bend down to read the varieties. These big stirrers will make it so you can read from above. I'm reaching the age where I'm getting tired of bending if I don't have to 😂

@@2MinuteGardenTips poke a hole in it and attach it higher if the plant is tall like a tomato or a fruit tree, with this the wood rot less because more airflow and it's easier to read

We tried popsicle sticks last year and same happens w the fading and as well the wood rots away from the soil and moisture. This year we’re going w the tin labels that you write on and it indents into the tin, at least for our perennials and fruit trees. For the garden we’ll go back to the plastic labels and use a paint pen. Although the paint stirrers will most likely last longer then popsicle sticks, I think the tin labels w indented writing and plastic w paint pen will last a lot longer. Hope this helps some people looking for better ways. The tin labels are expensive, but if they last forever and I have seen some people make them as well.

@@47retta Aluminum doesn’t rust, but it will corrode if in soil over time. The ones they sell are meant to hang on the plant. But the plastic stick in labels w paint pen is what I’ll be doing for my annuals this year. Like I mentioned, tried the popsicle stick (wood) and within months the ink was gone and most of them fell apart when taking out do to the soil and moister. Paint stirrers would last longer, but still would break down from being in the soil.

I have used these before. The wood does start breaking down in the soil. They don’t fade but you might get a second season out of them.

I eat a lot of yogurt. I just collect the containers (Stonyfield 32oz) over the winter. Cut the top ridged off with razor. From the bottom cut down toward top of container and repeat. Cut around the bottom a little deeper than your horizontal cuts so you can just pluck them off as needed. Beats throwing them in the trash. I just use a permanent marker.

I want to know what you used for the pen to mark on the labels. That ink is what is fading for me. Do the paint paddles help the ink last for the whole season?

I will use the Sharpie Extreme shown in the video. I have them linked in my Amazon Storefront under Garden Accessories. They're really inexpensive. They do last noticeably longer than the normal Sharpie's. We'll see how long the paddles last.

Hate to tell you... I've been using paint sticks since I started my container garden back in August 2022 and the rain and water removes the lettering on the sticks. You are going to have to seal the stick with clear plastic if you don't want the writing to be absorb into the stick or washed off. (I keep using them because the are cheap and allow large lettering to see better)

All this means nothing if we dont specify brand "paint stick" or grease stick or garden pencil or etc. and then only if we know surface used on. U can say "i just use plastic" There are any of hundreds formulas for plastic. Milk jugs for example are like PTFE &nothing sticks 2them.

I'm in Australia and I was disappointed to find that the "extreme" sharpies fade in time - I had such high hopes for them. I have switched to plastic plant markers with a garden pencil. Haven't looked back. Sun proof, water proof, and you can use an eraser to remove the writing and reuse the tag over and over.

I’ve read about using old mini blinds and I’ve read some could contain lead. They do break apart as plastics and sun don’t do well. I’m thinking a grease pen or pencil would work well on wood. I’ve read about using strips cut from aluminum cans and etched. There is also I think a zinc plate that can be written on with pencil? And reusable.

I tried using popsicle sticks last year, but they composted in a few months. I don't think that paint sticks will last much longer. But maybe if you dip it in polyurethane first?

For temporary plants, I buy new window blinds. They will last 1 year at the very least in Minnesota. For $5, I can cut several hundred easily. I use permanent metal tags for my ornamental plants. BUT if I need writing to be permanent, there is only - PENCIL LEAD aka carbon/diamond is forever. Metal and plastic labels written with pencil never ever fades. Google it - writing from pencil remains while the ink on the newspaper will all be gone. So I would pencil in the names on the back of the metal labels, while using weatherproof laser printer labels for the front face of my ornamental tags, when those printer labels fail. (BTW, you ought to put multiple amazon links, as the paint stir sticks are already sold out)

@@2MinuteGardenTips nod. for me i would just dip them and hang them to dry on a clothes line. might not coat the whole thing but at least the bottom- on the other hand i wouldnt likely use as many, on a yearly basis, since so many of my plants are perennial

I find the paint stir stick to be a bit oversized for grow bags smaller than 20 gallons. I purchased a bag of 100 1inch wide wooden craft sticks. They are about 6 inches long and look like oversized tongue depressors. Plenty big for a bag. I think we got them at the Dollar Store so, cheap.

I asked friends to save me their discarded window blinds and I cut them down and use a paint marker to put the name on and then I decorated with different colors. Basically free except for the cost of the paint markers which I get at Dollar Tree

for veggie gardeners, the plant labels have most of their use in cell tray, so we can make good planting out decisions. paint paddles not much suitable unless they fit in the label slot or otherwise readily usable in cell tray. never had a propblem with the sturdier/thicker plastic plant labels reacting with sharpie. maybe those flimsy plant labels arent that good.

Great concept with the paint paddle sticks. But you don't address the actual ink fading due to the sun. I'm in Australia, so the strong UV is always an issue . Thoughts?

I found that even sharpie tends to bleed when the sticks are wet. Next year I plant use a wood burner tip to write on them to see how that works.

if you scuff up those cheap labels with some sand paper prior to marking them, they will last a lot longer

Sure, eventually, but they will more than last all season, unlike the plastic labels, and be reusable for at least a couple years. And, when they eventually rot, they'll be 100% biodegradable instead of taking up space in a landfill somewhere or floating out in the ocean.

@@2MinuteGardenTips Anthony, I suggest to paint them. They may last you longer. Here in Florida they don't last me long, plus I'm cheap, I cut the yogurt containers and make my labels. I use a fine grade sand paper then write over that rough surface, the Sharpie stays better and it last in this blasting heat, rain and humid weather. Good luck!🍀😄👍

I grow, literally, 25-30 varieties of tomatoes every year. Sometimes, I have to consult my own videos to figure out which were which. I make my annual tomato tour for my own reference, too 😂

You can use a paint pen. They don't run like typical permanent markers.

I found the ink bleeds on the paint sticks. Did you paint them first?

Because the wood absorbs the marker ink, and the wood is made of natural grain which is large, it will be prone to bleeding. That's why these large paint stirrers are beneficial - you can make the text large, so the bleeding still keeps the text legible. Using something like a popsicle stick may not work, because the small text may become illegible. The Sharpie Extreme works well, but we'll see what happens once the rain starts.

I use wood popsicle sticks with a permanent sharpie and they still fade. The marker doesn't last, it gets absorbed into the wood. I have a laser engraver and I'm going to have to engraver my plant labels so its etched in.

Try the Sharpie Extreme. They last longer. You can also try the paint pens. They're great for writing on cuttings and wood.

I tried these last year and the water from the garden destroyed them after one season. The water also degraded the sharpie as well.. Mine were bamboo as they are cheaper. One the other hand I painted some for a winter planting and the lasted through the cold weather without degrading, However the cost of white spray paint is added. It is an experiment as is this video, so beware of solutions that seem easy.

I like plastic labels writing with pencil... Wooden labels are terrible, fade and rot. What you use to write with? Paint paddles seem so big.

I want to use large paddles, because I'll actually be able to read them simply by walking by. I will use the Sharpie Extreme marker. I have them linked in my Amazon Storefront under Garden Accessories. They're very inexpensive.

Not with the oil-based marker. The paddles will wear out before the paint fades.

FIY for whoever might be interested. I wanted something more permanent for my perennials that wouldn't rot after time being in wet soil and found this video using soda cans and metal coat hangers. You can also then make it more clear by using a paint pen. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ed2PdciLqLrIj58.html. Normally I use plastic knives as my labels, reusable with nail polish remover. But they're shorter and sometimes disappear over winter. This way I can have something longer (and bigger) staked into the ground that's not going anywhere. Happy gardening!

No. It's hard for me to read in the light. I really like the oil-based paint pens. They're dark and bold and don't fade nearly as quickly.

Natural wood will eventually rot. Getting 2 years out of a label is fantastic. Plastic labels only last 3 months.

I wash and reuse my plastic ones. I did find after putting shade cloths up, my labels r not fading as bad. Im in Texas and uv is rough

I re did 59 labels 20 times bcuz Sharpie is now a rip off watered down junk. cut aluminum cans, and scrape name on. Or use etcher. Lasts decades. I will resort 2 writing a note in an empty water bottle b4 i go out buy paint sticks. Sharpie is robbing cistomers blind with snake oiled markers & i can see why. Customer dont have a clue how 2test a permanent marker or what it is even for. Qsrlt Channel I saw had Disneyland testing& thought of some interesting tests, however on a less pre school aspect whole point of a permanent marker is if it lasts & is it permanent or not. Sharpie is selling watery markers featherlight. They have watered down smell. They used 2b heavy, filled with ink and were actually crazy permanent & would last over a decade. Now they wash off in a couple rains. Absolutely proposterous rip off. I have had 2 re do 50 garden labels 20 plus times. Some washed cmpletsly off. Maybe mine are counterfeit? Sharpie also makes colors so soooooo light &faint that u can baaaaarely even see them on surfaces when new! Incorrect testing lets these criminals get away with a snake oil product that stabs their customers in thback deliberately 4cash. Weight thmarkers 2compare them. Hopefully some1 out therw will test these on dffrnt surfaces for staying power. These backstab companies can also make half thcolors with lousy ink, u have 2b slick, accurate & thorough 2peoperly test & know how a product is supposed 2b engineered& perform. I could double my profits on Sharpies if I used an ink chamber 1/4 the size. Not1 review I read even addresses this. Quit 5 star reviewing criminals.

It's natural wood. It is going to eventually rot. That's what is good about these. They rot naturally instead of wind up floating in the ocean or sitting in a landfill.
