There is that side of me that does kinda want to go there, but it's also not as simple as "buy or don't buy"... usually. The only one I'll call out is Auralex, which is not a plugin, but it is bullshit.

😆😆😆 not a 🔌-in it's 🦬💩 About that list, I feel you, you don't want to score views the cheap way, but it still could be educational if done the right way. Make it edutainment. 😁 And of course its maybe not that simple buy or dont buy, but because of the oversaturated market its also easier to not buy a certain plugin without missing out on something

Great, GREAT video. most importantly Do not trust ANYONE's opinion of a plugin except yours. Yes, I know it sucks but do the work. Download the demo and use it on your material in your studio. Don't be lazy and watch a yt vid and let someone decide for you. (inside tip: most of these youtubers don't have much more experience than you! Matt excluded of course) Stop looking for a shortcut and do the damn work. You're own mixes will improve because of it.
@WeissAdvice

That is a fact. And even as someone who is pretty experienced I would certainly encourage people to form their own opinions. Especially since sometimes it's the workflow of a plugin that makes it good, not because it sounds special in any particular way.

I get the feeling that plugin companies sponsoring/giving NFRs is giving people the impression that pro engineers actually need/use that many plugins. It's also a vicious cycle because name dropping new plugins is great for SEO. People just don't get enough exposure to engineers working day in, day out getting 90% of their work done with a handful of plugins they're super comfortable with. That's something I appreciate about your channel, you're comfortable with your tools and they feel like a means to an end. Do you have any plugins that you think don't really have alternatives or atleast you'd be quite inconvenienced without?
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
That's why I'm still posting videos about the SoundToys Effect Rack LOL. There's a number of plugins that are just super conducive to work flow. Almost all plugins have alternatives at this point. I was able to replace AutoTune with MetaTune pretty seamlessly on Kon's computer. Maybe Trigger 2 and InPhase... those are really the only ones where I couldn't substitute something else.

I understand it’s a personal preference for not reviewing things you don’t like. But at the same time, as long as you are clear and honest about where you are coming from, that’s how integrity is developed and maintained. Something else to keep in mind is that most of the reviews that come out are when the product is launched. So they all have that honeymoon vibe in varying degrees because it’s the latest thing whatever that may be. It would be interesting to see what is still used after that initial product launch or when all of these plugins are accrued.

Fantastic video !! I use Slate digital all pass and the Sonible bundle, and some Cubase stock plugins sometimes. As a regular, enthusiastic, somewhat talented home hobby bedroom 'engineer', more plugins only confuse me. I use the Sonible stuff to give me a rough idea of a starting point, turn off Sonible, put on Slate and start fresh with that starting point in mind. I usually end up with something quite different from that starting point, and that's exactly how it should be. because once Sonible is off and Slate is on, it's the ears doing the listening and my mind doing the non-artificial sort-of intelligence. And I see the Black Friday deals, wonder 'how is this amazing new plugin going to make my life better' and hmmm... you know, I like what I am doing. Are there must haves? Would Fabfilter or Soundtoys of Izotope really make a huge difference, being some of the industry standards? Do I have the knowledge or experience to really make the most of having more eq's and more compressors to choose from? Or are the 5 eq's and 6 compressors that I regularly use and have become familiar with enough? So once again, coming black friday, I'll keep my money and buy the next round in my local cafe. cheers and bottoms up :)

I think that's a good way of judging - asking yourself is it really going to end up making your workflow, results, or life better. Cause usually it's not the stuff you expect. I have a program that analyzes whether or not a stereo track is actually stereo or if it's actually dual mono, and then automatically re-renders it as mono if it is. StereoMonoizer. I get more out of that software than I do out of 90% of my plugins.

I’m no one special in this game, but I have three of their plugins, and they’re all great. I have the la2a, the green Motown preamp(I’m terrible at remembering the names), and the tape machine.
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
I had beta versions before they launched, and the threshold calibrations for everything were way off - like they had been designed for people who were mixing 32bit and had everything at 0db, which is definitely not how I mix. When I try to explain this to the marketing person I got a really weird response. So I turned the endorsement down simply because the beta versions did not work for my workflow. So unfortunately I cannot say if they are good or not. I never really got a proper chance to use them.
@cbrooks0905

@@WeissAdvice, it’s funny you say that because the only thing I do notice when using their plugins is that the input and output knobs take a bit of getting used to, especially on the Motown preamp. Not sure if that’s what you mean, but besides that, their plugins are killer for the sound and ease of use.

@@WeissAdvice appreciate the feedback Matt. That’s disappointing that the company would be ‘off’ with someone deep in the game. I do use most of them daily in my work flow & really love the flavour. I can’t compare to say UAD which probably offers you a superior sound. Thanks again Matt.

@@WeissAdvice I would add one more thing that could be helpful for producers, is that it can be helpful to have access to a wide variety of plugins because when I work with artists, their sessions may have plugins instantiated that I need to be able to use at my studio. This is one reason I do like subscriptions because it allows me to temporarily have access to plugins that an artist loves that I don’t like. There are reasons I don’t like subscriptions, but I’ll save that for another day.

It's funny you mention how people focus too much on the GUI. I'm on the beta team for several big plugin developers. I am working on one right now with a company and there are pages and pages of comments all about the GUI of the plugin and most of the comments say absolutely nothing about the SOUND of the plugin. Even after the developers said ok, we get you guys don't like the GUI, please give us some feedback on the sound, it was still pages and pages of comments about the GUI. To me, it's pretty obvious that's what most people care about. By the way, said plugin does SOUND fantastic and I'm looking forward to the release when it gets here. Just thought it was funny how you mentioned that and I had this experience very recently lol. Great video Matt, thanks!

I see that stuff in reviews online all the time. People whining about make up gain or the placement of the output knob, finding all sorts of very simple things to complain about. I think it's because that stuff is more accessible than actually being able to tell if something sounds good. That requires skill.

@@AlexNiedt No no, I agree with you. Maybe you didn't see the rest of the thread. My thought wasn't based so much that people were complaining about it. I get that. My comment was because that's ALL people talked about. If you go back and look at the thread, there were only a few people talking about how it sounded. Even after Fab (let's just leave that there lol), asked people to please start giving feedback on the sound it was still pages and pages about the UI. They had gotten the point lol. I don't think some people actually read the threads tho. I get the impression a lot of testers in that group just comment without looking at the rest of the conversation lol. I do agree with you tho Alex, to the general public, how it looks matters a lot and it is super important the plugin looks good. Based on what I saw in that group, my comment was more in agreeing with what Matt had to say. I wasn't saying people were wrong for thinking that lol.
