Your ASUS TUF RX 6900XT probably has the Navi 21 XTXH chip, which is a better binned variant of Navi 21. MacOS only has drivers for the regular XTX chip. So it doesn't work in macOS. This also applies to RX 6950XT. There are hacks to get them working, but they wont work natively in macOS.

Apple is likely very aware that fully supporting the potential of RDNA 2 GPU's could hurt their future Mac M-Series sales. This would mean instead of upgrading to the Mac Studio they would just upgrade to a new RX card. Personally, if had the newer Mac Pro that was insanely overpriced then i would somewhat justify the price by upgrading to a fast RX card because i use Blender and Unreal Engine.

I know how you feel about your Intel iMac. I have a BTO 2018 Mac Mini with the 6-core i7 cpu that runs bootcamp and my eGPU perfectly with the latest version of Windows 10. As long as Windows keeps working, I will never get rid of this system.

Two notes - I'm pretty sure the h264 / h265 is offloaded to the T2 chip in the iMac 2020 which is why you saw no GPU benefit. But, I have the same imac and MBP. I want to get more life out of my Imac - is there any realtime processing benefit to using a 6800 (like realtime noise reduction) - I'm only using for video not games. Any thoughts are really helpful - thanks - I'm using resolve

Then, I’ve MBP 16 i9 (2019) and i don’t sure if I spend much euros for upgrade to Mac Mini M2 Pro (or MacStudio M1 Ultra) or spend some euros to buy second hand eGPU (6900 XT or 6800 XT) : about 900 €. I need more power with PremierPro and AE. What do you suggest to me?

I have a MacBook Pro 16, 2019. intel i9, 32 gr ram, and radeon pro 5500 8gb (internal) and another internal intel gpu. I just bought a razorr x chroma and radeon rx 6900 xt (exactly the same model that u have). The mac doesn't detect the gpu. It only detects the Razer core. I see that you had the same problem. what do you think is the issue? The apple web site says it should work. I have updated to macOS Ventura. Still no luck.

I’m using an iMac 5k 27” 2020, running a 3.6 10-core i9 processor and a AMD Radeon Pro 5700 TX 16 GB. Would you recommend the blackmagic eGPU or Razer core X (with which GPU?) for graphics, mainly Photoshop, After Effects and Cinema 4D…
@captureinsidethesound
@captureinsidethesound Жыл бұрын
Cinema 4D is the only application i think would benefit from a GPU upgrade but that's assuming its GPU dependent like Blender. The other applications are more CPU dependent (i think) so in your case you actually have over-kill hardware because the iMac is only going to utilize what its needs.

Fascinating demo - thank you. In YOUR opinion would it be worth me trading in my MacBook Pro 16 [Intel based architecture] (and which I currently combine with an external 250-300Watt AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU), and upgrading to the M2 Max with 38-Core GPU (and which won't accommodate an external GPU)? Just looking for your opinion.

my guy, no hating but the title says macbook pro 16 vs. 6900 xt..but it was never actually able to be completed? wild. then the comparison in title should just be 6800 xt. because the 6900 xt never worked, at least at time of video. it should now though!

Those eGPUs are so bottlenecked that they are pointless, even if you use Thunderbolt 563. And with the current prices, you are better off with a new laptop and better graphics, for less money.
@5urg3x
@5urg3x 2 жыл бұрын
This isn't true at all. If your mac has an Intel integrated GPU, ANY discreet eGPU will make your system noticeably faster. Those Intel integrated GPUs are absolutely horrible. With an Intel integrated GPU on an Intel Mac Mini, you can't even run a single 4K display with scaling turned on without the user interface lagging when the UI animations are going.

@@5urg3x I'm not comparing it to an iGPU. I'm comparing it to a dGPU. All the same, it's an extremely poor performing and expensive solution. ASUS proprietary version that connects straight to the PCIe bus is different though. I'm talking about USB4/Thunderbolt 4.
@5urg3x
@5urg3x 2 жыл бұрын
@@henrikg1388 In many situations, even a 16x PCIe connected dGPU is not utilizing the full bandwidth of that PCIe link. It really depends on what you’re doing. Also, most Intel Macs sold did not have dGPUs. The Asus solution is still PCI express version 3, but it’s 8 lanes instead of 4, so instead of 40GT/s, it’s now 80. I also don’t believe it’s tapping directly into the PCI express bus, it’s more than likely simply combining two thunderbolt / USB 4 ports…which is something Intel should have allowed from the getgo, but unfortunately didn’t. I’m not sure what their reasoning was. Probably Apple had a hand in that, thinking a dual cable solution wasn’t “elegant” and not wanting to have thicker cables that were even more length limited. Anyway, the faster link speed should help, but again, it really depends on the workload. If you’ve got a workload that is GPU bound and heavily optimized, and isn’t using the CPU or system RAM at all, and is doing everything on the GPU (like crypto mining for example), 40GT/s is more than enough bandwidth. OR if you’re running CAD or 3D modeling software, it should be fine too. The problem with gaming is you’re constantly swapping data from system ram to vram, and having to utilize both the CPU and GPU together, so yeah, with that workload, it’s better to have the fastest link possible.

In my opinion Apple does not really care about providing native egpu / intel support as they are moving to apple silicon. If you are running an egpu with a mac to get the performance you need to be running windows on your mac.

@@hwy9nightkid , garbage? CGI, 3D modeling and video editing professionals still use Windows + NVIDIA. Apple is garbage in general when its comes to real workstation use. You are an idiot to spend +$3000 just to equal a low priced Windows alternative using a RTX 3050.

MacOS (Metal) should allow the Radeon Pro 5700 XT to render faster than Macbook Pro16, at least on paper. The M1 Pro is equal to a RX 5500, right? My bet is that Apple doesn't want to really support release full support for AMDs shader-core technology because it could hurt the Mac M-Series sales. Blender still doesn't seem to care to support AMD's more advanced SC technology.

Could you manage to improve 4K gaming performance (fps) in bootcamp? And how did you set it up working? Most people report that as long as you use iMac internal monitor in bootcamp gaming, eGPU is just useless due to the huge performance bottleneck in loopback mode. They say that thunderbolt 3 and iMac’s internal monitor limitations kill the idea of eGPU.

M1 Max is very good at video editing and encoding. But for 3D modeling, or gaming, iMac with eGPU is going to *destroy* the M1 chip. No contest. Now that Apple is moving everything to M1, customers will suffer: Boot Camp and near 100% Windows software compatibility is pretty much gone.
