ahh I notice the difference already ! rather than the thumb sucking being her usual go to, she also responds with“no” and “stop” when she’s feeling overwhelmed with the hair tension as you’re brushing; but then you took a small break, let her know you had to keep going, and she was visibly upset but responded accordingly. My 11 year old son (neurotypical) has curly frizzy hair and wants me to style it every morning. If he's moody or in a rush, he'll complain that every little tug hurts. I know when he's exaggerating and just wants me to hurry up and finish brushing his hair. We've offered to take him for a haircut but he likes his hair long right now. Cutting Mikko's hair isn't going to stop her from being a bit uncomfortable or antsy when she'd rather be doing something else and has to be patient for a few minutes while mom brushes her hair. Her hair is beautiful! Good job redirecting her attention mom!

I hate to see Mikko cry as it hurts my heart so much. Precious, I don't know how you do it. You are the best mother to not just Mikko but all of your children. I figure that dad is filming and editing and is likely why we don't see as much of him. Mikko is an amazing child in spite of her adversity thanks to mom, dad and the twins.

I noticed how she started looking at you through the mirror for little moments of connection towards the end of the video after she started saying the words more clearly. She was so proud of herself, and it looked like she was enjoying the approval/reassurance you were giving her. I love watching her progress and watching her confidence build! 🤩

And I love that mom is being more firm than she was a year ago because it’s keeping Mikko focused on the task.

I want to say that you are very heartwarming. Despite the fact that she mostly just babbles and makes sounds, you gently encourage her, even if she may only be able to use simple words, she's improving, and her knowledge of language is there, you can tell at times when you say things to her and she responds in her own way. You aren't discouraged, because if you were, that'd reflect onto her.

Congrats for all your steps forward! Little (big actually) thing I noticed: you don't actually speak to her much, as in explanations, easy questions etc... Like "I need to unbraid and detangle, see? This is a liquid that helps me, do you feel it's fresh? Do you like the smell...? As if to explain the things that surround her and then having her participate in the conversation her own way. I think that would help her get her messages through to you better. I mean, colors, animals, numbers, letters, all those are great, but I just had the feeling that she might not be hearing many words from you and that is one of the reasons for late speaking skills in kids (generalizing, I realise, but why not try??) Keep the great parenting!!

Tough call, but you can see it helps her draw attention to other things. I think self soothing is so important, but sometimes distraction helps sooth, too. And you are teaching her that by giving her a chance to try other things. So important to know there are multiple ways to cope and soothe yourself. Stimming can be grounding and help with body awareness, but when being aware of your body is distressing, it can be helpful to draw your attention away from it. Saying that to her, whether or not you can tell if she understands, could help her. Autistic people so often need to hear the “why” behind what is going on. I think it’s probably important to allow thumb sucking at certain times, like at night since she doesn’t speak while she sleeps, anyway. Unless of course it’s causing dental issues. But if it’s not, than what’s the harm. It doesn’t look like this is an issue, but please never scold her for it. So many of my self care skills are motivated by shame, and it’s been taking a long time to build a different relationship to all of that. I finally showered last night because I wanted to, for the first time in a very long time, and I just wish I’d been taught how to enjoy those things more.

What I love most to watch is when you’re doing Mikko’s hair. My 1st grandchild is 1/2 black and has hair like Mikko’s😊 She is absolutely beautiful 😍 We’ve always told my baby how beautiful her hair is and so lucky to have such pretty curls. It goes all down to her bottom and we all love it. Thou it’s pretty it comes with much care and endurance because it takes time to brush,wash, condition 😊. We straighten it for the 1st time for her 10th B-day and she wanted it again for her 11th. I’m so glad she loves her curls more than straight hair. Hello how you and mikko I 've had long hair all my life your hair looks nice first twisting two pieces instead of braids is less tangling put hair grease like blue magic indian hemp and hair detangler use a comb on the end and hold it tight and work your way up. The comb you use is good after you get the tangles out keep it wet like you do. Good luck glad to here miko speaking that wonderful. What about a favorite soft toy to self soothe?

Sure it's helping! There are chewy/mouthing devices for kids that are sold on amazon. I bought one of their dolphins on a neck string for a student and it was great for classes. The child could self-soothe and continue being in with his peers. They also have pencil toppers. A LOT of kids chew on pencils and pens so it is age-appropriate looking, for adults, too1

I tried a thumb guard for my thumb sucker. My daughter was a thumb sucker before birth. Her teeth were shaped just like your sweetie. The only thing that stopped the thumb sucking was a mouth guard/expander that was installed by an orthodontist. She didn’t wear it long but it was the only thing that stopped the thumb sucking! I felt bad when I had to turn the key to expand her bite. But I knew she would not want to live with such an extreme bite. Now that she’s turning 19 she happy we did it when she was small.

When engaged, Mikko will speak. Do you realize that not only were the guards put on, but a book was also given. When mom has given Mikko books in the past, regardless of what she's doing, Mikko will respond, with or without the thumb guards. It seems like it's more so the book and mom's engagement that has Mikko talking. Not the thumb guard. If mom is just there combing her hair, of course she'll suck her thumband not say anything. There's nothing else to do so she resorts to the thumb sucking. But when a book is given to her, and questions are asked about the book, Mikko is so engaging. This video does not show me that the thumb guard is the reason she's talking. It shows me that Mikko is yearning for books and conversation and THAT'S what is expanding her mind and speech.

Just wondering if you were leant one from school or preschool, early intervention?? Anyone have an old one. I know all that's expensive but if you have a good app to put in, shes learning and getting pretty.
