I actually was wondering not long ago how you were able to post videos so often given that they are so well-researched (and most informative)! I'm glad to know you're taking care of yourself, though. I'd hate to enjoy your videos at your expense rather than for the mutual enjoyment of everyone. Speaking from experience, burnout is pretty awful, so don't feel bad about cutting down on your postings or taking breaks! I'm totally here for it!

Living in Japan and visiting are somewhat different experiences. I think as long as you're free though, in the sense that you're not working under someone like at an office, then its wonders truly shine. Being in any foreign country though, while in an unstable situation (globally or personally) is tricky though, so it's for the best you went with your gut on this one. Perhaps another time. I'm debating moving there too. I'm half, so the language and culture are a seamless transition for me, but being raised in the UK, I am slightly more western in my way of thinking... I know I wanna die in Japan though haha, I'd wanna surround myself with the gorgeous nature there in my waning years.

Agreed! I visited Japan back in 2018 of course I loved it as it was always a place I’ve wanted to visit since I was a teenager. I’ve had thoughts about moving to Japan but I’m a little apprehensive about it because it can be tough living in Japan as a foreigner and their work culture is a pretty toxic. Plus, Japanese society is uber-conservative which isn’t my thing. I’ve thought about doing the JET program too but I feel like English teaching jobs in Japan are over-saturated. I definitely would to re-visit though but that might be awhile due to the fact that I want to also visit other countries. I’m also currently pursuing my bachelors and I’m going to be a history major like The Shogunate. I’d like to do something that involves Japanese history one day and that’d probably require me to pursue a Masters or PhD.

All of your plans and ideas sound absolutely fantastic! I'm especially excited that you're thinking of remaking some older videos because, in my opinion, the early Sengoku Period is super under-rated; a lot of really interesting stuff happens, especially in the Kanto and Chugoku. videos about edo period sounds amaizing. i already was a fan of sengoku period but i know pretty much nothing about edo era so i am eager to learn and about taking longer to make vidoes i only have this say easiest way to burn you self from the things you love is to over do it until you just can not do it. so best thing is to take some space let yourself breath slowly ease back into it. starting slow again to gain momentum and to find the things that are so great about it. this happens whit creative writing all the time.

One old game you should take a look at is Sword of the Samurai. Available on both Steam and Good Old Games, it's an MS-DOS game that got me into samurai history. If it wasn't for this game, I likely would not have the same passion for Japanese history and culture that I do. I recommend the GOG release, as GOG optimizes the games on their platform for modern computers. Steam, to my knowledge, does not always do this. Sword of the Samurai is a combination RPG, hack-n-slash, and strategy game. It has duel segments where it's you vs one opponent, melees that pit you against multiple foes, and battles between armies that actually seem like a precursor to the Total War battle system. Framed around this is a menu system where you manage your land, visit other samurai estates, and even get married. You start as a retainer to a hatamoto of the clan you select, and you can eventually take their place, becoming a lieutenant to your clan's daimyo. Eventually, you can replace them as well. Once you do, your true goal begins: uniting Japan under your banner. All this sounds like it can be a long game, but I've completed games in under 3 hours. I've played it for years, admittedly, but I'd be more than happy to lend you my expertise if you want to do a comprehensive review of the game.

I can't believe I been following your channel for over a year (I came a bit late but right up to Sengoku period), it sure was a fun run thru those time period although sadly I am not a Patreon as I don't really trust using credit card info on Internet. Anyways sometimes, life can be like Ronin, just follow the wave and let the wave take you wherever it brings you. Beside warfare, maybe look into the life of ancient Japan or famous Japanese people that lived thru the war period but are not warriors or samurai or Daimyos. People like Ikkyu a famous Buddhist monk in the early Muromachi period and later become popular from a 1970 cartoon that made him beloved character in Japanese and even in Chinese kids called Ikkyu-san or Tea master Sen No Rikyu or even Imai Sokyu a rich merchants in Sengoku period who become rich as middle man of selling European wares and Chinese wares, especially tea items. For me, you are way better than John Turnbull in terms of the ancient Japanese samurai. Anyways good luck in the future and rest well. Looking forward to see you again

OK now this is the time to do what I really hate, but must be done ' Fan boy out" about this channel and you. First you have one of the greatest voices for narration that I have ever heard. It makes what ever you talk about something I want listen to. Second from the first video I discovered of yours, I have been impressed by your scholarship and overall knowledge of this channels subject matter. The thing about history is that sources can be wrong or mistaken and new sources and scholarship, can effect interpterion's on formally settled matters. The fact that your making your episodes updatable just makes the episodes more impressive. As a bit of a Japanese history buff I know a fair bit about some of these topics, but I always learn new things. This gives me the ability to do deeper dives into areas that I never really explored in the past. Third for selfish reasons I'm sorry that you won't be living in Japan, because walking the ground where the actual events so often makes the how's and why's of what occurred more understandable. I was looking forward to your footage and live interpretations. Fourth I'll still get those from your travels to Japan, it just won't be the amount that living nearby would allow one to get. Fifth I hope you do write both historical fiction and scholarly books as I want to buy them. I believe your ability to tell a story has already been established. I'm going to wrap this up so I'm not any more overly obsequious than I already am. You deserve to have a life and me wanting more of your content is not a reason to stress you out or lesson your high production values. If it goes to one or two episodes a month I get to look forward longer to your next release. Your breadth of information and subjects make watching and supporting your channel important to me. Thanks for the update.

It’s a shame the ambition to try living in Japan died out for you. Living in a country for a period is probably the best way to understand a country and its culture, the good, and the bad. And it allows you to find things buried under the surface that is hidden from foreigners and tourists. That again, can be both good and bad. But I’m glad you have other wishes to fulfill to replace that old ambition.

You should review the video games: Shogun Total War 1 and 2. There's also an upcoming game called Sengoku Dynasty (open world survival game, not released yet). There's some fantasy samurai games such as Onimusha series, Tenchu, Shinobu (side-scroll ninja fantasy). Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin! (Yakuza game in feudal Japan). Nioh and Sekiro by FromSoftware are popular too. Samurai Shodown (side-scroll fighting game). Strategy games such as Age of Empires, CIvilization and Humankind (2021) also have samurai. These are niches though so the old games might get few viewers.

It's heartbreaking, that someone like you, who's clearly so goddamn fascinated by and in love with Japan, lost the fire of ambition to live here. I sympatize though. I also lost my fire during this pandemic and especially due to Japan's response to it. I used to aim for JLPT N1 and possibly stay here for good, but that changed and I have now decided to leave for good instead. Maybe staying here for 2-3 more years, but that's going to be it.

As far as the copyright issues are concerned, have you tried putting the videos in boxes and putting citation marks on top of the video where it's inserted? I know that the modifications are basically your work so therefore it's copyrighted by you with the content underneath being owned by somebody else. I mean, there has to be a (legal) way for people like news outlets to cite stuff. So maybe that's the trick.

Former Japanese English teacher here. You DON'T want it, the pay is hot garbage, your company can fire you at any moment, they won't back you if you get into any trouble and you're basically viewed as the modern equivalent of burakumin/Eta so women won't want anything to do with you. Do ANYTHING else....Also watch out for Gaijin hunters (women who date foreigners for the novelty and status then dump you for the next ornament she meets) and people looking to befriend you as a free English teacher.

KZfaq has a way of causing some kind of depression in the head of its content creators. We often times expect immediate result and base our next course of action on what the previous video did in the search rankings. All in good terms.

Damn I think my first comment may have been deleted cause I left a link in it. Sorry if it wasn’t and this is another comment, just wanted to say I love your videos and just wanted you to know about a cool game called Shin Sengoku. Ryan (founder) made a KZfaq page for it and he also has a channel called ‘way of ramen’. Come join the discord server sometime and see what it’s all about and I recommend you all do the same as well ! Ever since I’ve been involved with the game I’ve watched your videos religiously and enjoying learning about all the cool history. Also just starting sphere of influence for the first time but wish ps now would work smoother 😅

I hope that short videos don't literally mean vertical KZfaq Shorts. That would not be a good format for the channel.

Haha I was wondering what you thought about Nioh and Sekiro. They can be hard to get into. Have to get into a mindset where death's are not to upsetting. I imagine I'm in a friendly sparring match. 😂 Then it's fun and you'll git gud as they say.

haha yeah I'm not to that point yet. Dying repeatedly while I am trying to finish it for a review seems exhausting.

I'm playing through Nioh 1 now. Thanks to your sengoku series I actually know a little bit about the people I meet. I'm at the point where I met a decoy for Tokugawa Ieyasu. Cool game.

Congratulations on avoiding the Weeaboo's Blunder. As a westerner, Japan is a place much better visited than moved to.
