I really appreciate you having guests - they never disappoint and always bring an interesting perspective. Fantastic hearing Zagorodnuik’s thoughts. I understand Jonathan’s desire to see the best of the best at the Olympics and not have country quotas. By contrast some of my favourite moments in the men’s competition came from seeing the joy of Majorov at being able to compete, the happiness of Donovan Carillo at making the free skate and the relief from Brendan Kerry at having two clean skates. That’s part of my memories of the Olympics. And yes I am from a small (non competitive skating) country so that may influence my perspective! 😀

I agree, even though it's sucks like I'd want more Korean, Japanese, Russian ladies and more Japanese men but at the end it's the Olympic. It should be the event where all countries can participate and show what they can do in the big stage. It's important for the development of the sport in small skating fed. If I were to change the quota, I'd like ISU to provide like wildcard spots (may it be 2 or 3 spots) on top of maximum 3 spots/ country. And they can have fun with how they determine that wildcard. Maybe season best? Audience favorite? etc.

Agree. I’m an adult skater and can do about 3 run-throughs on my best day. There are younger skaters at my rink who do on average 3 run throughs per session, and it does not appear to take a huge toll on them, granted they are doing doubles and not quads.

I am not an expert on training but it does seem questionable to not train run throughs because this is such a mental sport and the mental preparation is just as important as physical being able to mentally prepare and deal with training a full program would be important.

Dude, that sheer joy of Nathan Chen in the second half of his program deserved all the GOEs and PCSs for me. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on Olympic ice and it really is so rare to see someone release so early into the program. Four jumps in, he already knew. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. And that quad lutz... probably the most perfectly timed quad jump of all time. Also, imagine being so legendary that you fake people out with a casually added quad jump 😅 Nathan and Raf are just something else.

Not like he had much of a choice. He was losing already before that. The 4lz didn't work out, the 5 quads didn't work out, the 4A is something Nathan can't do so he thought that might be enough to give him a bit of an edge. Personally, the whole talk surrounding the 4A is annoying since it was never going to help him win and he knows that, but the press/his fans and even himself pushed that narrative. Now it's reached a time where he can't just not beat Nathan, but can't beat other men either.

I'm just here to say how happy I was for Jason to put down two clean skates AT THE OLYMPICS!! Closing out the SP with Sinnerman has become a core memory for me - it was phenomenal. The fact e came SIXTH at the 2022 Olympics with a double axel in his free skate is just testament to his mastery of the blade and performance! I actually can't get over the fact that if he hadn't popped the sal in combination he would have been fourth!! But clean SL was a masterpiece - I hope he's proud of himself. I know he's made no decision about retiring and has said he will remain involved in the support whether through coaching or choreography, but honestly I'm not ready to say goodbye to competitive skates from Jason yet :(

I also love watching Jason's programs (yes even the Hamilton one which many fans hated... so sue me haha). I'm not ready to see him leave competitive skating. However, retiring may be the best move because the way the scoring goes does not give any advantage at all to PCS and/or GOE skaters. Crazy tech content + okay jump landings + consistency is the key right now. The PCS and GOE will rise even if not necessarily deserved. Like I'm impressed with Nathan and all and his wins are correct, but I don't know that he can be classified as a PCS skater and his jump landings are just okay/so-so but not great (for example, compare his 4Lz to Boyang's successful 4Lz), yet he gets high PCS and GOE. Nathan got higher PCS than Jason, even the Transitions mark wth (justice for my idol Jason please T_T).

Nathan is amazing but Jason is the reason I will be checking out the Stars on Ice tour lineup for the next 3 years.
@janisseraneses4823
@janisseraneses4823 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rachel-rs7jn Depends if judges will correctly score PCS. Because the problem is not just the weight of PCS, the bigger issue is how judges award PCS. Nothing will change if judges keep scoring PCS incorrectly even if they adjusted the weight. No hate on Nathan or any other skater, but it's frustrating to see him get higher PCS than Jason (even his Transitions mark is higher than Jason's cmon). As pointed out in TSL multiple times, judges do not correctly award PCS. If someone skated a generally clean program that has difficult content + he's a medal favorite + he's consistent all the time, his PCS will just rise over time even if not reflected by the skating. Like Jason should be way above most skaters in PCS, but we don't see that. :(

Even with this stuff happening with Kamila (which should really be called the stuff happening with Sambo70), thinking about Nathan's performance in the free skate still brings a big smile to my face. It is rare to see an athletes enjoy the moment as it's happening and you could just see that Nathan knew it was his. Like he wasn't just enjoying the moment, he also looked very happy. Nathan's win! So great for him (and now those casual viewers, many of them American, who bashed him in 2018 could suck it). He's been so dominant consistently this quadrennial, I wonder if he'll go through with what he said before about taking a break from skating (i.e., retirement most likely) after Beijing 2022. Honestly not sure if he'll move on to other things in his life or keep competing. Not enthusiastic about Shoma's Bolero either but his is way better than the other Boleros this season. So I guess I actually like Shoma's Bolero at the end of it all haha. Jun skating to Turandot in the same group as Shoma made me remember and miss Shoma's Turandot in 2018 which I LOVE! And I was hoping you'd offer thoughts about why Jun and Jason, 5th and 6th placers, weren't invited to the gala exhibition. No hate on Morisi and Keegan, but I don't think they're more popular and more "exhibition-type" skaters than Jun and Jason. I do think Vincent was invited as sort of consolation for being unable to perform due to COVID. And what the heck, there are death threats? Crazy funny in a way. How did the fans even zero in on Mozalev out of all the other skaters? 😅 As for Yuzu, I agree he may suffer from lack of/limited audience. I think he gets extra energy from the crowd. There are speculations that he's without a coach due to disagreement in the preferred approach to the Olympics (just like when Yuzu got injured leading up to 2018 OG, Brian may have also tried to convince Yuzu to ditch the 4A after he got injured before NHK last year). I do wonder why Yuzu did not just opt to have a Japanese coach with him. And I wonder if he'll retire now or keep going. I watched some interview clips where he said that he worked hard, gave it everything he had, and he doesn't regret since he left nothing behind (although of course he is disappointed which is normal for a high-level athlete to feel).
@yohanes2034
@yohanes2034 2 жыл бұрын
I guess it would be disagreement with how to approach the competition. Brian would obviously advise Yuzuru to ditch 4A. Now regarding why he chose to sit alone in K&C, I guess it's to signify that the choice is his alone and he didn't want to bother Orser

@@ManchirTserendagva Depends on him and what his plans are I guess. I mean he's still young and he always seems to be healthy/uninjured even with all those quads he does (by healthy/uninjured, I mean that Nathan hasn't had to pull out of competition due to injury since he turned full senior in the 2016-2017 season). I also observe that most top athletes do prefer to go out when they're on top / when they have a medal (just to name a few, Zagitova, Osmond, Javi, Plushenko after getting a team gold in Sochi, the Shibutanis, Duhamel), so this may also factor in Nathan's decision.

@@yohanes2034 Yes, although I think since he's in Japan, he could've gotten a Japanese coach, manager, or just anyone to have with him (just like in his earlier seasons with Brian). Even just to ensure that things are generally safe and for someone to be there just in case something major goes wrong (we have seen a number of in-competition incidents where it took a while for the med team to get on the ice, even with an athlete's dedicated coaching staff surely pushing for them to get there). If Yuzu chooses to continue, I do hope he has proper coaching. If he wants to master the 4A and Brian/his team can't support him, he could always look for a technically sound coach who will want to support him in his journey. There's no reason to be unsafe and practice/compete w/o a coach.

I’m also not a fan of Bolero, I never thought Shoma connected to the piece and you can see him struggle to project it, smth that shouldn’t be an issue for him. But it sounds a lot like Stéphane pushed for him to do it and Shoma just wants to reach his expectations. I think Stéphane is overall good for instilling belief in Shoma. I just hope next season they outsource different choreographers Bc I’m not sure Shoma and Stephane’s style matches

Yuzuru's goal since Peongchang has been the 4A. After Sochi, he said his goal was to win another gold in 4 years...which he did. Would he have liked another gold? Sure. Was it his focus for the last 4 years? No. He wanted to try something new...to push the sport to a new level. He has already won everything. He has nothing left to prove to anyone. This jump was something he strongly believes in, and I for one, applaud his courage for trying it. Take a look at the development of the quad. It has to start somewhere, why not with Yuzuru? And here we are just a few months after the Olympics and Ilia has posted video of his successful 4A.

So proud of Yuma - I knew he could get on the podium above Shoma, too! Shoma is a two-time Olympic medallist now, which is good for him. Yuzuru going for the 4A was momentous, even if he fell on that and the 4S in the Free. Honestly, it was just Olympic worthy to see him in Beijing at all. Donovan Carrillo made history for his country, Adam Siao Hsim Fa with his Star Wars program was EPIC!! Jason's Sinnerman was great to see, too.

Jonathan said that after Yuzuru finished his performance he felt like ohh were back on earth again and during an interview after the competition said that his program was about being between earth and heaven and if thats what people get from it then he's achieved his goal so I would say that Johnathan may have felt the meaning and purpose behind Yuzuru skating this time. as for why Yuzuru may not have skated at the team event Shizuka Arakawa who's part of Yuzuru's camp has said that Yuzuru skated without being able to feel his right foot at all so there might have been a medical consultation with his doctors in japan weather he should be skating at all, and he was seen icing his foot in the waiting room after he finished his program. Yuzuru does seem to be quit a private guy and even his coach Brian Orser has said that about him in interviews before so we may never get the full story behind wether he actually was fully healed from his injury while skating in this Olympic cycle. I don't think Yuzuru chose not to have a coach because he thinks he's the best like Slav said (his ego), he has spoken about his fear for the health of the people around his and the virus that has been spreading, and he did not mention or insinuate that ha's the best or he was approaching this olympics to win, even when he was interviewed after his shot program he said i'm not afraid of anything his goal was simply to showcase something people could enjoy.

JSF didn't invite Yuzuru to the team event, so that's why he decided to come later. The Japanese judge also placed him 6th after the free skate when almost all the other judges placed him 4th. I don't know what's going on, but I don't think it's fair to say it's his fans pushing him to keep putting in increasingly difficult elements when it's pretty clear he doesn't have a lot of support from even his own federation, much less from international judges. Also, what happened to Hanyu is the same thing that happened to Mao (blade getting caught & messing up the first jumping pass). There's pretty clear pictures of the hole and the path of his blade going over it, and he told staff about it after his skate. Yuzuru's always been really upfront during interviews about why he's made mistakes (either just not being focused or making a mistake with his axis), so I don't think he's lying about this. He basically said, it was just really unfortunate but that nothing can be done about it. I just want to clarify, because I feel like you're really misinterpreting a lot of things.

I agree Zagorodnuik’s opinion about Jin. He is very on point. I am not sure if Dave and Jonathan understand what he was talking about though. The system in China, the coach consider the skater as their personal property that leaves no room for growth potential for the skater. And once that skater became established and considered as the one, all resources will only go to that skater. Nobody else get any resource or any chance. Therefore this system may help created on or two outstanding skaters / pairs for some extended period of time such as Zhao/ Shen, ans Sui/ Han, or Lu Chen, or Jin. But once they retire of have some injury or bad form there is nobody there to come up. This particularly way of identifying and cultivating talents sometimes can be very efficient, but it lacks the system to nurture a field of depth, it also promote systemic corruption, further, because early coach consider talented skater as their personal property. There seem little room from future development with international coaches. ( see how Lu Chen and Li Mingzhu relationship fell apart and also the disastrous infighting which caused Chen’s declining form after 1996 worlds)

To some who think JSF did not ask Yuzuru to be on the team event, just for the fact, JSF has not officially said whom they asked and who accepted. At the interview after Olympic team selection, Yuzuru did not want to address questions about team event while everyone else said they would be happy to come tribute if selected, which seemed to me the he did not want to do the team event. I wouldn’t be surprised if JSF took that as a hint. And I think it is also likely that Yuzu is just referring to the final confirmation he got about team selection because even if he had declined when asked the first time, JSF might have told him they would take his preference into consideration but they will make the final decision bearing in mind other members’ circumstances. At least that is what I would do if I was the federation.

I don't want to diminish the responsibility of those - whoever they are - who give children banned drugs to enable them to train more, but where are Kamila's parents in all this? A parent's job is to protect the child from harm. Were they kept in the dark about her medication? If that is the case I would expect them to report it to the police... Have they? Not only does their talented and hard working daughter now risk being labeled a cheater, but possibly that medication could be detrimental to her health in the long run.

I think it is very different for them than it is for us. We forget these kids are snatched away from home at an early age and are seen as property of the State, not the parent. Not much has really changed in Russia. Cultural roots run deep.
@littleblackpistol
@littleblackpistol 2 жыл бұрын
There are cultural differences at work here for sure. Russia has an autocratic and hierachical culture in ways westerners don't always understand. We saw parents blindsided in US gymnastics by a doctor who slimed up to them and gave them plausible explanations for the abuses he was doing. In the Russian sphere, it's more like a doctor isn't going to be questioned to begin with, or feel he has to explain anything. Hierachy. Autocracy. Eteri behaves like a sadistic petty god because it's normal for people of high status to behave like this there. I imagine the parents weren't encouraged to ask questions or feel they could ask quesitons to the degree a North American parent would. They also expect pain and suffering as part of sport, perhaps to a sadistic and disgusting degree. It's the same in all these autcratic cultures. China is as bad or likely five times worse. I don't imagine for a second the athletes have any say in what they ingest. After all, Eteri will remove their food and starve them. That's so primal and they accept it. If you culturally accept a coach staving a girl to inhibit puberty, can you imagine the athlete or their parents has ANY input in what 'special supplements' they are given, or chance to find out what they are?

i think with hanyu, axel is his favorite jump. there was an anecdote that he saw mao's 3A and thought it beautiful; then he jumped it once and said it was easy. so i think, the 4A just a progression of his thought process. i do think that his inability to win, CURRENTLY, against nathan, as well as his asthma and the pandemic - he made them reasons to stay isolated in japan. Now, because he is hanyu and a genetically gifted athlete with excellent work ethic, he still has a base training to stay at his usual top level. but, that's just it. Aside from the advancing of the 4A, the rest stayed stagnant; and i think his mental state deteriorated a bit. Of course, even his subpar outings are still beautiful, because he is hanyu, but it was not plushenko tribute long beautiful (my favorite hanyu long after seimei). and i feel very badly for him that the 2 years he spent alone for his dream did not reward him. he said that he felt that he gave it his all and that he felt that that was his best ever 4A in that fall. I hope that he continues for another 4 years and that he gets back to toronto asap. As a naturally self-contained person who could spend days alone, I know personally how easy it is to lose oneself in routine. he needs the coaching team to bounce ideas off of. he cried in front of the japanese reporter (the one he is close to); his eyes were swollen, said he hates crying in front of the camera.

@@pennyinheaven how so? My sports science knowledge is only up to the physics involved in general; as well as my obsession with NBA in my college years. He doesn't seem to bee TOO injury-prone.. admittedly, he would have an uphill battle to keep a 31 year old body in Olympic level readiness.

I'd really like for this to be the thing that finally prompts an investigation of Eteri's coaching practices, but it just looks like Valieva's gonna take the fall in the media, and who knows if there will even be any meaningful consequences for the ROC. I feel so bad for that girl (all the kids on that team, really). It's hard to watch them from Juniors to now and see them reach newer and newer heights, but know that the price for that is their health and longevity as athletes. Also, really interesting insights from the interview portion. Even if Valieva does compete, Trusova and Shcherbakova are in a better headspace to win. I don't think Hanyu's lying about the "divot," imo it's believable that some irregularity in the ice right before the jump could've made him hesitate. Nothing big enough to report, but enough to unbalance him at exactly the wrong moment. But on the topic of his huge fanbase, it's a double-edged sword. He has expectations to live up to, not just from his country, but also people all over the world--both expectations being crazy: win a 3rd Olympic gold and do a 4A. I'm worried about how defeated and remorseful he seemed with the Japanese press afterward. It sounded like he might be giving up on the 4A. He'd be less likely to injure himself, so that's good, but 4A's been his main motivation for years so...idk where his head's at now. But on the bright side--Yuma! I'm so happy for him! And good on Shoma for medaling again and for Nathan completing the final chapter of his Pyeongchang Redemption Arc. And Jason getting so close to the podium!! tbh I'm happy that Yuzuru wasn't in the team event because it gave Shoma and Yuma a chance to be in the spotlight and win another medal. Assuming they'll be getting medals at some point >.>

PS omg Jonathan why do you hate Lambiel 😅 I honestly think Shoma is really improving under him, although slowly. I think the problem with Shoma now is nerves, as Slava said - he might have a splinter in his mind 😂 I'm looking forward how he'll do at world's.

5:15 Sports culture is a huge part in shaping US national identity. Maybe not for a male skater in the US, but there are sports icons like Phelps, Dorothy Hamill, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Simone, Muhammed Ali, Vince Lombardi. There is a reason to care so much about winning, especially as a woman’s skater.

I feel that pain. Jason's skating is absolutely riveting. Over my 10 years of intense Jason fandom how many times have I thought "why why why can't he just learn one quad?" if my numbers are right, one perfect quad (in either the short or long) would have put him on that podium. And the press are so respectful and never ask him about the quad. His white whale. But it might haunt his fans more than it haunts him!

He described it to a reporter immediately after his skate. I think TSL is saying his fans are the ones who brought up the idea of the divot and that’s why they’re so snarky, but it’s not something someone like Yuzuru would lie about in an interview. The way he thanks the ice, he may have even accepted it as how fate was playing out this time around and not protested it to the judges, like the gods weren’t smiling on him this time.

@@wgwgwheregoodwego5147 I said the middle of an edge tracing not the middle of the rink. The fact that it's in the middle of a CONTINUOUS edge tracing means it wasn't where he, or anyone, did a jump because the edge tracing obviously has the big gap when there in the air. The fact that it's in the middle of an unbroken edge tracing proves it's not where he did the jump.
