Sandra Bezic joins us to make sense of the CAS ruling in the Kamila Valieva doping case and helps us to recap the ice dance event at the 2022 Olympic Games. Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume set a standard in ice dance with their magnificent performances, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue gave power and connection, Madison Chock and Evan Bates explored space romance, and Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov gave us a Russian classic with a twist of Paganini. We break it all down, including highlights from Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz, and Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, in the latest edition of 'This and That'.

When you said that the commentators aren’t really walking us through this scandal like Sandra did in 2002, that is the role that the Figure Skating Lesson has taken on! You all are filling in the gaps in much needed coverage. Love Sandra. I think the other overhead lift she is thinking of was in Nick and Lolo’s gladiator long program.

Only 7 minutes in and Sandra is already the most articulate queen on how we're all feeling I have ever heard on this situation. One thought while listening this conversation - we should be talking about consequences, but we also should be verbalizing what we truly want and value and that is CHANGE. It's not even about giving consequences and punishment but the greater goal of change for a corrupt system.

Just want to add that after 2002 I think figure skating in North America may have lost a lot of fans except for the die hards. It’s seemed like a joke to a lot of people and nothing has really changed except how they score

Thank you Sandra you feel like a palate cleanser from all the crazy things that is happening! I was initially underwhelmed by G&G's Free Dance at the start of the season. But the more you watch it, the more beautiful it becomes. It's not the most rousing of music that would rouse spectators, but it's pure dance. It's art.

I loved the music from the start, and although some thought it wasn’t a good choice for Olympics I liked it and was expecting it would fill up and reach its full potential at the Olympics. With gpf cancelled and them not going to Europeans we didn’t get to see the full evolution, but I was delighted to see the full product at the Olympics and like you said, I felt it was art

Yes completely agree! I feel like the whole dance vent was a palate cleanse from the past few days, just so much class and beautiful skating (massive shout out to IAM for that lol). Also agree about the P/C free, was kind of blah about it the first time I saw it, but last night it was stunning.

I’m so sad that Gabi and Guillaume’s win has been entirely overshadowed by this doping scandal. Congrats to them on their world record and insanely well-deserved OGM. Like Nathan, they didn’t just win, they dominated and won by the biggest margin in CoP Olympic history. Gutted for Chock and Bates. Sad about their RD slip but that free to me is best of the season by a mile. At least it was different and said something. All I needed was a P/C win and we got it. A million congrats to them, redemption is soooo sweet!

Dave so clearly LOOOOVES Sandra. He literally melts when she speaks. : ) Quality-wise this was the best FS event I have ever seen at any Olympics. SO many wonderful pairs showing their best when it counted. The IAM showing the complete dominance in every aspect of skating, choreography, performance, visuals... Just amazing! My only problem with the outcome is that Chock and Bates ended up off the podium while they clearly deserved a medal. That FD is so sophisticated and well thought. It's original, it juggles with a tricky theme that could've easily driven them to kitsch, but they stayed firmly on the sophisticated side. Her hair, makeup, their costumes, the program fluidity, and their performance... just amazing! LOVED Papadakis & Cizeron (RD is the best piece of ice dancing EVER), Hubbell & Donohue (this sport will not be the same without them... they're so unique), and I also loved Smart & Diaz (BOTH programs are superb and hope they'll stay in competition for 1 more year at least), and Howayek & Baker (oh that FD suits them like a glove -- seeing that I knew we were in for an event of our lifetime). Sorry for this long a post! Papadakis & Cizeron rekindled my passion for figure skating. After the 2002 scandal I kind of fell off the fandom. Now, after the current scandal, I think I may stay in to follow Yuma and the IAM pairs, but I am not going to follow FS as I did for the past 7-8 years. Life is too short... I know that FS can and will survive perfectly well without me, but I guess it will be super hard to attract youngsters to dedicate their lives to such a difficult but ultimately crooked sport.

For this whole season, I feel like Gabriella and Guillaume have battled assertions that their best days - both artistically and athletically - are behind them as dancers due to their free dance leaving a lot of people cold. This Olympics put those critiques to rest. To me, this is a high point throughout their entire body of work. The music they chose to embody was just exquisite, and I felt so much watching them. They were just on another level.

Yes absolutely, the people who were saying it was boring, just don’t understand what they are trying to do, and don’t understand their high artistic skills. No other pair would have been able to do that and pull it off. No other team.

I liked this free dance and performance, but I still think their peak was in the 2018-2019 season, especially technically. That was their best and most difficult/complex set of programs, imo.

Jonathan and Sandra just *vibing* as artists I love it. Sandra's comments connecting the Valieva scandal to SLC were very illuminating. Fans have been screaming about the corruption in scoring for years and get gaslit by people in the sport. When is the sport going to admit there's a problem? I was so happy to see H/D skate so well and win a medal. You have to just fall in love with their skating whenever they have a half-decent program. A few errors but I guess that's part of just going for it the way they did. They deserve to be remembered as a great team.

She is amazing, articulate, intelligent, funny, talented, empathetic, charming all the compliments. My moments of ice dance: Gabby and Guillaume and Maddy and Zach. I found myself glued to my TV for Maddy and Zach's FD - which grabbed and surprised me... totally agree with the way Zach was connecting with Maddy throughout that performance. Gabby and Guillaume's SD was genius, authentic and different. LOVED the FD. I found the whole event so uplifting, especially with what has been going on. Thank you again guys,

My 2 moments in for this event were also S/D and P/C. That Zorro program is going to be a guilty pleasure that I'll go back and watch over and over again. Yes it's cheesy, but I'm just such a sucker for that. For P/C, I didn't love their FD all season but for some reason in Beijing there was a sudden moment of clarity in their FD where everything clicked for me. When I need a good cry I'll be going back to the P/C FD again. Totally agreed about the IAM skaters: each of them are presented in the best way possible drawing on all of their own unique strengths and none of them look like the other teams. That in itself is an incredible feat. Much love and respect for this school in Montreal!

Also, they realize what a farce the women’s event will be now & they have to sit there and commentate it. It will be an awkward event and not enjoyable for anyone at all (could also say something similar about their particular brand of commentary too but apparently some people actually like it…)

Great discussion with Sandra Bezic. What a treasure she is. I'd like to see a follow up video showing the highlights of what she brought up with you both as you are talking. "shrugging at corruption." Very astute analysis from Sandra which just goes to show how difficult it is to eradicate corruption, not only in Sports but across the broad expanse of society. It definitely is a reflection of society's morals, not just in Olympic sport but in all things. What are we left with except speculation when all controlling bodies are also corrupted and do not do what they are supposed to. Everyone likes to debate philosophically, the relevancy of the word "truth", to the point that nothing applies and there is no sense. And then it's Rafferty's Rules where anything goes. I personally have given up these last years on devotedly following the Olympics, Winter and Summer. Destroyed faith in public figures as with world bodies covering eg., health policy and science, must be displayed in the public's response to following the sport and displays of mistrust. Great discussion.

Dave drinks water: "I hope there is no TMZ in there." lololol I watched the end of the free dance with a group of people who had gathered for the super bowl because NBC switched to Olympic coverage after the game. Read: about 10 people who knew NOTHING about skating but were drunk enough to be mesmerized by people in costumes and music. It was a fun experiment. Football Group Survey Says: Fear and Gibson's Lion King was NOT a hit. Sheer and utter confusion about dancing, skating space aliens. Guillame's red shirt was not well received. Gold would have been better. The favorite program of the evening was Zorro. Like, everyone was hootin' and hollerin' like Olivia and Adrian scored a touchdown.

Smart/Diaz' Zorro program was BOMB! The Olympic medallists were expected (though, ROC athletes are now suspect to me), but I enjoyed the Spanish team's Zorro FD the best!

Re fear and gibson, though I don’t think it was their best performance and I think their rhythm dance is better. I wouldn’t be surprised that the French wouldn’t be the biggest hit with American football fans, even if they hadn’t been drunk. I personally enjoyed the subtler gold threads through red version of their costumes and was very glad they didn’t add more gold to Guillaume. I can agree however the zorro free dance is fun and they performed it really well that night! Thank you for reporting from your interesting experiment!!

Thanks for the recap! Sandra, you don't need to be apologetic about what you think about the ending of Sinitsina/Katsalapov's program. Even Tara and Johnny (who people do not like and who also gush about Russians) said the same thing about their icky music change. And I loved the bit of Scott's commentary I saw on twitter. He said the things we wish the general public would hear! He said he was surprised to see Davis/Smolkin in the Olympics 🤣 My favorite programs were P/C's Whacking RD and S/D's Zorro FD! I wish we'd seen Daisuke's RD here.

Hearing of how the other women skaters are practicing - I wish their coaches will sit them down and tell them, I know it feels devastating and we don't know what the outcome at the end of the road will be, but the way they as skaters fight for their sport is to give the performance of their life, because the world is watching on this Olympic stage! Imho it is either withdraw in protest or truly show the world what figure skating should be about.

I have to say, C&B's free dance really grew on me over the season. Might be hard for those seeing it for the first time to fully appreciate it. On a different note, I watched the last group with my boyfriend (who's French, so he really wanted to watch P&C). He could not understand why S&K's marks were so high, from a layman's perspective. I didn't say anything in advance as I wanted to let him form his own opinion. Halfway through their dance, he said "I must say, I really don't understand that scoring. The numbers don't seem to be matching what I'm seeing." And I totally agree with Sandra about their last minute. It's just bad.

Hubbell and Donahue benefitted from no audience, they didn't get over energized and really leaned into their long program (not my favorite but I thought it was the best skate of it this season). Sad to see Piper and Paul whimper out here, unfortunately the team event predicted their fate and they didn't seem to recover. Smart and Diaz, program of the season!! I hope they stick around for a bit, they could make some big moves with this momentum.
