They'll need far more Starships than boosters. Starships will be in orbit much longer. The idea is for the booster to launch and return in about ten minutes, refurbishment if needed, then 30-45 minutes to refuel for launch.

More yes. Far more? Not till they are running trips to Mars I think. Anything going to orbit will be up there a couple days to a a couple weeks mostly(refilling the orbital tanker mostly for the short trip ones). Launches to the moon will be dedicated starships in orbit.

Sorry, that's not going to happen -- maybe 24 hours, but definitely not as short as an hour. These are not commercial aircraft with turbofan engines, these are rockets with rocket engines operating far closer to the limit than jet engines ever have. So 24 hours is possible, but I'd argue a more reasonable time to conduct the tests that need to be done, particularly with man-rated hardware, is more like a week, and that's assuming they find nothing unexpected. If they do then that rocket's going no where for a while. The better approach for fast turn around is having multiple assembly and test facilities or a single larger facility so that you can always have one ready to go with short notice. Imagine a VAB that allows you to build four complete rockets with the ability to do one per week they could sustain once a week, 52 times a year, and still be able to launch, within hours, a second flight if needed. I actually get angry with the nonsense surrounding, not space or space technology per se, but the non stop blather from SpaceX fans with no concept of reality!

@@NScherdin I think idea about this very quickly cadence will be mostly for Leo. With that capacity and price, there will be sense to create orbital industry. There is very large potential in microgravity production. Ie lot of medicine, as there is lot of potential in new medicaments, and many other will have lot less loses, or process would be much simpler. Another appliance of micrograv production is on materials, as crystallisation is different in micro, and even processor production that should be easier.

Elon doesn't have to throw away any of the Starship during testing. Instead of landing on the ocean, land the duo on a barge that is essentially a floating pool of about 15-20ft of water. The barge needs to be a radius of at least the vertical length of the spacecraft or super heavy (duo). When the duo falls over, they land in the pool of water breaking their fall. This water will be heavy and costly to transport, so keep the pool empty, and use pumps to fill it when in position. It can then be drained immediately after landing. He only needs two barges.

6:01 No, they wouldn't need to replace the entire layer. All they would need to do is cut out a hexagon-shaped section and replace it with another hexagon-shaped section before applying the replacement heat tile. Granted, I'm sure SpaceX is counting on reaching a point where tile loss is as uncommon for Starship as it was for the space shuttle. I.e. pretty rare but still possible. The difference of course is that the space shuttle did not have a backup plan, and a missing tile in the wrong place-which was the vast majority of the shield-would have spelt doom. The shuttle did have an episode where a tile fell off but it luckily happened in one of the few places where the shuttle was able to survive.

You did a great job in distilling it down to an understandable form. I am glad to see SpaceX dealing in reality rather than Elon's crazy dreams. Safety will HAVE to be paramount, else his program will face regulatory delays caused by self inflicted disasters. Moving fast and breaking things only works when you don't keep destroying your launch pad and pissing off the government and the regulators. After cargo and tanker missions become operational, then next will be the HLS version. I fully expect a dedicated human rated launch Starship to carry less cargo and include a complete launch abort system capable of recovering the crew from all phases of ascent. But that will come after HLS is perfected.

Question: If Starship still needs a LOT of work in your opinion, isn't it crazy for SpaceX to attempt to catch the booster on their one and only launch tower (for now) with the distinct posibility of a mishap that could damage that tower, the tank farm nearby, and, depending on the severity of the mishap, hit buildings and people nearby? Wouldn't you agree that Elon's insistence on this is INCREDIBLY BAD JUDEGEMENT?
@TheSpaceRaceYT
@TheSpaceRaceYT 4 күн бұрын
That's a big question for sure. I think even Elon has made it pretty clear that the catch attempt only goes forward if all systems on the booster are performing flawlessly, otherwise they'll dump it into the ocean - so that's the most likely outcome. If they do go ahead with the catch and it damages/destroys the existing tower, then maybe that provides some useful learning that can be put into the upcoming towers before they're finished construction.
@wbwarren57
@wbwarren57 4 күн бұрын
@@TheSpaceRaceYT The silver lining to a booster catch mishap will - I hope - be locking Elon out of making substantive decisions on Starship development. Elon rushed Starship Flight 1 when the OLM was not ready with bad results. My thought is that Elon is rushing the catch attempt because the 8/8 robotaxi announcement is going to be HIGHLY underwhelming. Succeed or fail, a booster catch attempt will "boost" confidence that Elon is a genius - even if it turns out that robotaxis ARE NOT going to help the Tesla bottom line any time soon.

The launch pad (and every single launch pad of any rocket company/agency) use fresh water for deluge, as salt water from the sea is highly corrosive to the launch equipment and the rocket itself. For now SpaceX doesn't have a launch escape system for starship. The current plan is for the ship to hot stage fire during any mishaps with the booster. However, the ship itself doesn't have an escape system if anything goes wrong with it. This might change later in the future, but for now this is the plan.

There are too many points of potential failure to make it to the Moon & back. They need to use the Starship to transport a Moon lander to low earth orbit, and head on out to the Moon from there. They could refuel everything from Earth orbit. Vehicles returning from the Moon could be placed inside the Starship for reentry. Since they would be operating in a vacuum, everything except Starship could be very lightweight, like the Apollo stuff was. None of it would need heat shielding. Don't think fuel will ever be made on the Moon. That is a complex, energy intensive process. The scale needed would be too vast. There is no diesel powered construction equipment, or electric grids to plug into on the Moon. Fuel will need to come from Earth. Good luck working on anything while wearing a pressurized space suit. I doubt the current NASA plan using Starship to land on the Moon will ever work.

Upgraded engines, more engines, a larger rocket, what is this all about? A change in construction material, increasing the heat shield and aerodynamic surfaces and having to strengthen the vehicle means it is overweight.

WE FIRMLY BELIEVE; Private Spaceship Developments should be LAUNCED UNDER "PRIVATE MISSION CONTROL", and mostly From Boca Chica and maybe Vandenberg. Private Launches "should Not" be under NASA Constol, as "Politics" Must Be kept Out Of Space Missions Unless the Launches are Military or Direct NASA Science Related.

Still not apparent to SpaceX they really don't need legs to land Starship or booster even without the chopsticks or catch attempt. They've have a 30ft diameter "single leg" to land on. All that's necessary is to extend the ships fuselage just past the engine nozzles similar to the hot stage ring design

Although lunar surface gravity is 1/6th that of Earth, the Starship still has just as much momentum when landing there. So the landing legs still have to withstand landing velocity errors up to a point. They also need to cope with sloped and uneven surfaces, plus mobile boulders/rocks under the landing leg pads. Might as well install and test the landing thrusters as well, here on Earth.

@@imconsequetau5275 I like to imagine a Starship that can land upon the deck of a ship in high and rolling seas… and as softly as a cat light down upon the ship and all the while maintaining perfect attitude, pitch and roll… sailing home to distant shores… And an escape pod as the Starship nose cone, similar to Crew Dragon and capable of attaining lunar orbit and returning to Earth… like Apollo, if you believe in such things…🚀 I would not see myself being stuck in a crashed spaceship… Belts and suspenders… legs and escape pod… homeward bound 🚀 The redacted Starship will be maintaining lunar orbit 🌓

@@zotfotpiq According to Elon Musk, three things for Starship development are real for this year: 1) Fully rapidly reusable orbital heat shield. 2) Return booster to launch tower. 3) Return Starship to launch tower. Next: Starship with landing legs for uneven lunar surface. Nose cone escape pod is fictional so far 🚀 The redacted Starship is something Grok came up with and we all know he lies about absolutely everything 😂 Which means it’s probably true.🚀 Think Space Force

so what you're saying is they didn't do the math and the first one couldn't actually get itself to orbit, much less a payload. and now you're trying to tell us that the ever increasing weight, size, complexity, and engine count of both sections is actually a genius part of the plan? here's a question... can SpaceX do anything wrong? 🤭

This flight was literally a complete success The Saturn V also did not complete every flight successfully. In fact the one before flying crew failed to fly its desired trajectory It also had hundreds of billions of funding and was a far less complex vehicle. A reminder too that Falcon 9 had a number of explosive landing attempts. Now those landings are more reliable than any other flying rocket by success streak. Also the fact that Starship is being developed through flight testing. Saturn V was developed on the ground and had many explosive tests too
