Garrett Mancuso what wrong with that?
@xIcarus227
@xIcarus227 4 жыл бұрын
@@b5lover129 multiple reasons, but you have to understand how it works first. Systems like Haldex didn't even fit the definition of AWD before the term 'part-time AWD' was coined. The system is basically FWD until it decides you need power at the back, and its default power split is 95% front / 5% back. This has the advantage of better fuel economy since you aren't overcoming the rolling resistance of 4 wheels + extra drivetrain components all the time. The disadvantage is rather immediately obvious: you're driving a FWD vehicle most of the time and it feels FWD like the guy said in the video. In corners you're kinda accelerating and hoping that the back comes around as your front tires lose grip, and because of that its behaviour is inconsistent. Other systems like Torsen-based ones are permanent AWD systems where the default power split is much greater towards the back, the most common setups are 50/50 and 40/60 front/back, sometimes even 30/70. It's not as efficient as Haldex fuel-wise but you're riding on 4 wheels all the time which gives it great consistency, and since it's a mechanical system the response is natural and instantaneous. For regular 24/7 road use Haldex is fine, it really is. You're somewhat alleviating the drawbacks of a regular AWD system (efficiency) while also gaining benefits like extra grip when needed (in snow for example). But for sheer cornering, permanent AWD like Torsen-based systems and similar are superior. It's one of the reason why so many Haldex-based cars are so inferior for track use (Golf R, RS3, this TTRS, etc). In the case of the Golf R and RS3 the problem is made worse by the MQB platform which really doesn't have the necessary characteristics for track use. Haldex should theoretically work very well with a stiff chassis where lift-off oversteer is easily achievable, but I don't know of any such exemplars.

No other car looks like the TT - its sharp lines and ultra modern look get eyeballs everywhere I go. I’m not sure TTRS buyers get them because they can’t afford an R8. I’ve had two R8s (V8 and a V10), and now I daily a TTRS. It’s just more practical with a rear hatch and it doesn’t get any hate (to be fair, the R8 doesn’t get much hate either, unlike some other supercars). My 2018 RS also seems louder than the 2019 you tested. And the interior design of the TT trumps all other Audis. The way the vents are designed, the way they work, it’s brilliant. If you’re really paying attention, look at the cowl over the instrument binnacle. It puts to shame the way the RS3’s look, and even the current R8’s doesn’t look as good.

I went from an M2 to the TTRS. Although I miss the RWD, I find the Quattro system feels way more controllable and honestly faster when you need it. As to the understeer, yes, it does, but did you happen to notice what kind of speed you were going when it starts to understeer? Also, as others have mentioned, you can greatly reduce understeer with some simple tweaks. And yes, I love the look of the car, how unique it is (Corevettes and Porsches are a dime a dozen where I live and I have yet to see another TTRS) and the awesome sound of the engine.

Soo you ask what´s the deal with the TT? As a Mk3 TTS owner for me it's all about having a car that feels special and is easily daily drivable. If you don't the need to drive anyone in the backseat it's ridiculous how much fits in this car. Interior is super nice, way way better in quality and design than the Cayman or the M2 (both of which I was considering and tested). We get a lot of snow and rain so AWD is a huge plus. And when I get the opportunity to stretch its legs it's a great sports car to have some fun. Of course it doesn't match the feeling of a Cayman, but the Cayman just compromises on too many things to be comfortably daily drivable, and the opportunity to have a good back road hoon is maybe once a week. I think the TT hits the best balance in its class to be comfortably usable and fun every day. It's like you would blend a hot hatch and a mid engined sports car like the Cayman.

Well said. The engine alone is a reason to get a TTRS over the cayman. Porsche royally screwed up putting a 4-pot in that car. I had thought about getting a TTRS as a daily but the lack of a (usable) back seat and a nearly $10K premium on a car with (at least to me) a marginal difference in performance and interior sealed the deal on the RS3 for me. Still, it is the true baby R8, and really looks the business.

Well said. I've got a 2016 TTS as it's a fantastic jack of all trades car. I was very keen on a Alfa 4c or F-Type but being that my partner would be driving the car too, the 4c was too compromised. The F-Type feels like a mustang or Challenger based on it's size. The MK3 looks fantastic, and drives great. It's not intimidating to drive for my partner.

Amin Bajrektarevic I own a 2018 TTS and a 2019 TTRS (Just purchased this week), and fully agree with you. Like you, I live in an area that sees heavy snow 5-6 months of the year. I pop on a set of snow tires/rims and the TTS has no problem; just one of the reasons I chose the TT over a Cayman. I agree with the reviewers regarding the MMI system. It's far from intuitive. They said that the gas cap cover is aluminum, which is incorrect. It's plastic.

Haldex is not the most track performance oriented AWD setup. It's really good in pretty much every other way though. It's excellent in the snow (check roller test videos). It's very fuel efficient as the rear is mostly disengaged until slip is detected. Like most things in life, it's a trade-off.

The fact is it works because from my experience the only time the car would understeer is in conditions where a rwd car would also understeer. The TTRS can get a haldex tune to adjust the toque split to something like 80 rear 20 front at all times if you want. The stock tuning is designed to be safer and more fuel efficient by having a fwd bias. My Mk1 has the 1st gen haldex which only can be up to 50-50 but the gen 3 haldex system has a lot of variance
@xIcarus227
@xIcarus227 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure safety in the stock Haldex isn't one of its traits. If anything, a permanent 50/50 AWD system would be the safest since you won't be understeering a lot and would be more consistent. But spot on when it comes to fuel economy.

Slight understeer only really matters if you're on a track or canyon carving. There's only a few AWD cars that don't understeer. This car understeers less than the STI. For regular city driving the AWD system in this car allows you to use all the power whenever you want without getting loose or breaking the tires. You can have your burnouts and drifting, I'd rather slam the pedal with 400+hp whenever I want and be out.

I sat in both and I thought the TTRS was roomier than the RS3. Also, if you want to drink out of any cup larger than a Starbucks grande, get the TTRS because the RS3 cupholders are nearly impossible to use for big cups.

I have a TT-S . Great daily driver for a small sports car. You can effectively get 3 people in the car by moving the front shotgun seat forward. I have put 4 smallish people in it, but lol - not recommended. Even the TTS is fast but the TTRS is entry level super car fast. I take my TT everywhere, in the snow, heavy rains, on long trips. The ride is a bit harsh for some people but I like it that way. One knock on the transmission with auto, TT will very impatiently take you out of your gear when you want to stay in it. The override to manual is very conservative.

I’ve got a mk2 TT with the 3.2 VR6. It’s a lot of fun to drive and carves the corners quite well. A few simple mods takes care of the understeer and a simple Haldex tune/controller upgrade really changes how the AWD reacts in a very positive manner.

I own a 2018 Audi TTRS (pre facelift) and I think this review of the facelift was very good. But I can confirm that the TTRS is so good around the track. With proper semi-slicks (Trofeo R etc) I can keep up with Porsche GT3 RS in corners and uphill on track because of the Quattro-system (driver dependent) 😉

I had a mk1 TT s-line that I bought for mega cheap and did a whole bunch of work on. The styling and the looks and the feel just makes you smile every drive (the mk1 TT was deffs not a performance beast) but even on race days it was so much fun. I still regret selling it to this day. I think the finish and quality and the styling was something that a young driver like me never had experienced before in something so affordable.

it had no high speed stability due to the lack of the wing which was then rectified by adding a fixed spoiler in '02 i think and recalling all pre-02 models to get the wing installed. The first gen haldex in the old tt was literally 95% FWD unless slippage was detected then it could send up to 50% to the rear. I of course stand corrected

I ordered a 2013 TTRS after Audi ran their Facebook campaign asking if US buyers wanted one. I ordered mine with Suzuka Grey Pearlcoat and Carbon Fiber mirrors. Despite the rarity of the model for both the 2012-2013 models years (800 total), my dealer discounted my car from a $64,000 sticker as optioned, to $58,000. At that price it was an absolute performance deal. The car was unique and unfamiliar to many other sportscar drivers, who were often caught off-guard with the power and speed of the car. And as was mentioned by another commentator, the TT has THE BEST interior of any Audi. Styled beautifully and everything you touch feels quality. I did not pull the trigger on the 2019 TTRS though, as I felt the $10,000 increase in price was more readily felt than the extra 40 HP it had over my car. And now that the performance of the TTRS was better known, I doubt my dealer could have been talked into as aggressive a discount as I received the first time around.

I presume this is on the VW/Audi MQB platform (Audi RS3, Golf R etc). So the engine is transverse mounted and it's in front of the front axle so the under-steer is part of its nature (can't get around physics). As far as the Quattro it's likely the Haldex AWD system which is primarily FWD and when it breaks traction, it will send up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels.

@@madgainz7871 Tell him that mounting the engine in front of the front axle will cause more under-steer? Tell him that the Haldex system in the MQB platform VW/Audi cars is FWD biased and only up to 50% power goes to rear wheels? If he won in spite of those attributes, more power to him/her. But my statement still stands regardless of who won what race. Physics don't care.

lol!Having the 2018TTRS prefclift,would confirm was surprised with the sound at first,then saw all the comments for the filter etc on the 2019models(even performance decrease on launch!?) disable the electronic stability control and it will slide if you push it in the corner , i've had the golf 7 R and the RS3 prefacelift and they tend to understeer a lot lot more , TTRS 8s is nothing like these but still does a bit you can't get rid off it its quattro in the end of the day..but that's why you drive in any weather and you get a mad launch control stock 3.4sec and stage 1 in Germany with Simonmotorsport 500hp does 3.030 to 100km/h and 6.7 100-200km/h .. Nothing does these numbers in the class, interior is banging remove the front plate and the grill is massive , you can get the 3D Matrix OLED tail lights way better looking , sound is absolutely mad..everybody loves it indeed for a reason

I also have a 2018 and must agree with your comment regarding turning off the stability control. It's always hugely frustrating to see testers comment about the RS having under steer and being too "SAFE" but they always appear to be driving the car with stability and traction control systems still partially turned on. If you drive a BMW with these systems turned on the car is truly horrible. The systems are constantly kicking in, limiting the power, auto braking and giving you that flashing dash light... even in the dry! This is why everyone who knows a BMW pops them into Sport+ which allows the car to play. However in the BMW you rarely feel the need to disable all the nannies completely. The problem with the TTRS is that it is too capable. Most people select dynamic and press the DSC to get into "Sport" mode but then complain the car is still too safe = no fun. OK so why not try turning everything off? I know that in a BMW this would have you pointing the wrong way at the first corner, but this is not a BMW!
