In this video I finish fitting the last, lower flight, newel and bullnose tread before fitting the remaining treads and riser, and then finally fixing it in place.

I haven't fitted a kite winder for about 5 years and yesterday I fitted a double winder I did it the same way as you and couldn't get my kite in I ended up taking it all onto the 1st floor build it complete and lowered it in position then I remembered that's the way I did them a few years back thanks for showing mistake very easily done lol

Great job. My next job is to move a badly fitted, fully assembled two storey kitewinder. It was fitted 140mm back from and 20mm above where it should be and makes the headroom in the attic below regs. The installer and the manufacturer are ghosting us. The rafter jig I made worked out well, the inspector passed the roof, said it was very nice. I'll do a little follow up vid. Don't ever stop making vids Del, I'm learning tons from you!

I've literally made hundreds of stairs, all types, mostly for loft conversions, I always used to mark actual floor level (Finished floor to finished floor on site survey) on each newel and leave about 2 inches extra on. I also fitted my work, this was to allow discrepancies in floor level. The problem with stair makers today they don't want to fit, just supply. Which is fine but with buildings and floor levels all over the place there is something satisfying measuring and cutting as you go to get the perfect fit. Might be my OCD joinery background but its nice to be prepared for every eventuality. Nice work Del.
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi bud🖐You're right in what you say, and this company will leave the newels long to get right down to the oversite concrete, and only didn't in this instance because I wasnt there when the site survey was done🤨Thanks for watching and your comment😎Cheers

Im glasgow based and used to do a lot of site work but ive been doing my own domestic work for the last 5 years . When you think the price we got on site for those was £90 you can understand why they are usually assembled on the floor and lifted in resulting in the posts usually being way off plumb . I really dont miss the juggling act between making money and taking pride in yoir work . Nothing better than taking your time , leaving a great job and getting paid . Nice work , that will be squeak free 👌

Nice job, we usually skip those glue blocks and use a piece of 2x2, screw it through the riser and tread and it draws the 2 together tight as a drum. The reason being is that if the tread has slight round in it, it will not sit tight on top of the riser and with continuous weight being applied on it those glue blocks will have a tendency to fail after a while and then it will squeek. Other than that nice job👍
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter 11 ай бұрын
I hear you Danny👍and I guess I just stick to using the supplied glue blocks as saves me needing to get additional timber, plus I tend to do more solid timber stair cases, (oak, Ash, walnut), which, obviously, can't he screwed through👊Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

Another job well done. Isn't it a shame that a majority of Australian Carpenters wouldn't even attempt that. Stair construction and install is considered a specialist job. So you order your stairs, and carry on once fitted. About the only ones we do are steel stringer, straight flight. Basically bolt on treads. And I still think all this splitting of jobs is undermining what I believe a trained Carpenter should be able to do. It makes for too many different workers on site. Time delays. Extra cost. And an overall logistical nightmare. I bet the Builders you work for are glad they just ring Del. Carpentry sorted. Tick.

You're very very good at explaining the process you are going through as you are working which makes watching your videos so enjoyable. I dare say 99% of the people who watch would be more than happy to sit through an hour's worth of footage because they're interested in learning from a pro and those that can't keep their attention span in check for longer than 5 minutes wouldn't likely be interested in learning how to build a "bastard hip" anyway.

Great video mate, I am currently fitting this type of stairs on a new build site in kent as a price work carpenter. Do u think £140 per set is acceptable? I can see your taking pride in your work but I struggle to do it and make a living at the same time! Cheers
@C013ain
@C013ain Жыл бұрын
£140 for a set like that is an absolute joke. Specially if its a new build I suppose u have to cut out the joist and boards for it and also install temporary handrails for health and safety. A lot of work goes into these stairs, also glue and fixings. Not to mention if u want it to be nice and straight u have to spend time adjusting it....
@mlawlan69
@mlawlan69 Жыл бұрын
£140 a set seems really low, and they wonder why they can't get people into trades and or why quality on new build houses is so poor... Absolutely taking the piss, especially when you consider how much they're flogging the houses at... I'm sure some suit somewhere is laughing all the way to the bank whilst the grafters actually putting it all together can't afford to keep working...

Hi there bud🖐As the other commenters have rightly said, £140 for a set like this is a disgrace😵‍💫I'm often fitting wooden floors in homes built by a well known house builder, and I'm often seeing poorly fitted and finished staircases😬however, I never judge as I am aware of the shocking prices on site, and how guys need to earn decent wage for the day and not a pittance. @@thetallcarpenter another question del, do you ever plan your work days outside of work hours?. By planning I mean thinking through the job knowing what techniques and potential problems you may encounter. I try and do this outside of work hours as doing this on site can put me behind schedule if I was to stand there and think. Or do you have periods of time at work spent thinking through the job, and if so how much time max should you spend before it becomes counter productive in terms of too much time out of the day is being allocated to thinking as opposed to doing?. I know this maybe something you’ve never consciously thought of but maybe a rule of thumb for how much time if you do think through on site etc Thanks
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
@chippy977 Great question, and the answer will have changed throughout my career as I've become more experienced. Simpler tasks tend to just unfold in front of me as I go, and therefore need very little preparatory thought, but more complex jobs like multi floor stairs and big technical roofs I nay need to take a little more time thinking about them, and ironically, I tend to do this during quiet times after work at home, and even when I'm in bed before I go to sleep🤔
