A never-before-published interview with Dimebag Darrell from 1992.
In this episode, we have metal guitar legend Darrell Abbott, also known as Dimebag Darrell. At the time of this interview in 1992, Dimebag was 25 years old and was out on tour in support of Pantera’s album “Vulgar Display of Power.” In the interview, Dimebag talks about his guitar trick that he wants everyone to learn; how Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, and Ace Frehley were his influences; how great his dad was; and how Pantera writes their music.

I bought a gorgeous Dean acoustic electric Koa wood guitar as a tribute (or in memory) for Darrell. When I perform now a little bit of it is always for him. Saw them play in Dallas in 1985 after meeting him while I was there visiting family in 1984. He played Foolin by Def Leppard on an old Fender acoustic a guy had and actually did a good job on Eruption on the same guitar. It`s hard to do that finger tapping on an acoustic. He showed me how to tune it too. I had played piano since I was young and had just got a Yamaha keyboard and mentioned that I couldn`t understand the guitar neck. I had started playing the drums a year before and sang and played in bands until 1998. I knew a guy already in 84 that was really talented like Darrell and of course played Eruption but was impressed to see it attempted on acoustic. LOL! Anyway in early 2000 at age 34 I started learning acoustic guitar. I always think about him when I tune one and after he showed me I started making sure our band guitars were tuned, especially a guy named Roger in our band....because he was damn good on rhythm but tone deaf. Even in 1985 people in Dallas really loved Pantera and I would hear people talking about them at work, "MAN PANTERA IS PLAYING TONIGHT! WE GOTTA GOI!" I never forgot their name after Darrell opened the show standing on a table right by the stage...lights came on and he kicked drinks off the table including a full pitcher of beer! Never forgot their name from then on! So remember if you`re in a band...MAKE THEM REMEMBER YOU! And have an amazing light show like Pantera too! TOP THE BILL!

In the way he wrights solos part he said “there’s never gonna be another edward van halen where its so good you wish the lead would never end” he didn’t know that he would be that guitar player. When he wrote floods the lead in that I wish it never ended I just love that lead part to DEATH.

I watched a phil interview and I feel pantera ruptured had something to do with darrell not recognizing others bands and players as oppose to Phil showing more respect to other bands. Long story short it seemed they had some kind dissagrements building up for a long time. I love how darrell was just doing his own thing instead of learning 20 millions notes and scales and at the end his sound was a total brutal assault and felling like no other even now.🤟

Wow... I not heard his voice in years. This is from when I was last hanging with him. I really only knew him thought friends and from days drinking with him at the Mexican food restaurant bar at the parks mall. My memory is a bit vague. I had left Texas in the early 80s. I had moved to Crested Butte and had become a photographer. Darrell asked me to come be the band photographer. I remember they were on the verge of making it. I thought it was odd that he asked me to come be their photographer after I said I was not really into metal.I remember this because he asked if I like the new album. I had heard it. I told him I didn’t like the style but that I thought they might be the best of the metal of that time. Darrell was just a really kind and funny guy. Wish I could have another beer with him.

Absolutely amazing interview. Hearing him talk about his limitations as a musician, really puts in to perspective what music means. Here's a cat who's solos are bringing people to tears twenty years after he died, with people scouring youtube trying to find a snippet here or there of his playing they haven't heard before, watching tutorial after tutorial to try and copy the tone, flavour and feel of his playing - and he only knew three fucking scales! Being a solid virtuoso is wonderful, but making music that endures is about finding your own voice. When he says he only bothered to learn three solos from other players, every guitar player who spends months learning complex solos lick for lick should be listening. Use that time to find your voice, your tone, your flavour, your feel. That's what it's about...and that's how you make music that touches people.

I met Dime after they played a show in Glen Burnie, Maryland in 1993. He was the coolest guy to everyone. I still have the pick and autograph to this day.

First time I met him I was 11 years old thanks to my uncle that is good friends with a guy that runs a large venue close to me. Met him 3 more times through my teens and he was the exact same guy EVERY time. The absolute nicest, kindest guy with just a pure positive vibe. He has had such a massive influence on a ton of bands still to this day. I've seen soo many bands live and Pantera is at the top. I miss Darrell so damn much.

Yeah I noticed that too, ppl bashing on Metallica around that time was like expected of any major metal band. He kept it real, he jammed with James and Lars. He really had nothing against them and praised them for their contributions to metal music. They even jammed a couple Metallica covers from time to time live. As a kid I jammed the hell out of their first 4 albums. When the Black album came out I was disappointed. But my cousin threw in CFH and said check this shit out! It blew my little mind, I was only 6 yrs old. But I wore that tape out. Then when I found out they were a local band from the same area I was from. This blew my mind as a child, then one day my mother and uncle came from one of their gigs at The Basement in Dallas. She got my Power Metal tape signed for me and had some pics. I can remember each day every album was released. My mother even took me to see then in 94 and 96. Ment the world to me, some of the fondest memories of my childhood for sure. I go pay my respects about once a yr whenever I'm driving through Arlington. This band ment the world to me as it did for thousands of others throughout the world! They left their imprint in the world of music for sure.

Awesome interview..Dime was one of a kind for sure and he loved his fans..He came out early and there was not many people at the show yet and he handed me down a beer on the headstock of his blue lightning kiss dean..I got a pick to and will never forget it..Far beyond drunk the pick says with a Seagrams 7 logo on the other side.. All night long right in front of his monitor rocking out with the man...Good times I saw them 4 times in the 90s and that was my favorite show...Man the memories the 90s were great.

I was in highschool when Cowboys came out. It was the summer right before 11th grade. I was blown away because I never heard guitar playing like that. I'm not taking away from Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen or anyone else. Dime was just different and is still different in 2023.

I wish I could accurately describe how much I love Dime and how huge this amazing soul impacted my musical taste. What EVH and Ace were to him, is exactly the same as what Dime is to me. His legacy will never grow old and when you can say that, especially after having impacted so many people positively, you fuckin did it right!! I really enjoyed this interview……..thanks for posting!

Very cool to hear him talking about his Whammy pedal that he just bought which was later used on the song "Becoming" I had one too around that time. I thought it was a gimmick pedal but he actually made usable sounds with it. His originality is what stood him apart from the rest of the pack.

Thank you for this video in particular. I've really been getting into Pantera over a rough year, I feel like a dimmed out light bulb. I've found Dimebag to be a really inspirational figure. Trying to find the energy to be more passionate, upbeat, and happy again came from loving who he was. I was born in 2004, I really wish I could of met him, and there's only so many videos of him online, but this one really tells you alot about him.

The fact that he says “that’s fantastic” and dime is just like “it’s alright, it could be better” when talking about vulgar just shows you how down to earth he was. The dude goes and writes one of the heaviest and most kick ass metal album of the 90’s and says it could be better. That’s crazy lol

Thank you for sharing this absolute gem! Been a fan of Pantera since I was about 13-14 years old, now 36 and still rock out to them. Hearing Dime talk and his passion and enthusiasm coming through about music is so heartwarming and wholesome. Such an amazing amazing person. RIP with Vinnie and all the other greats

Thank you for this,man! What a great interview. Dime was a one of a kind cat, man. Met him a couple times at Guitar Center signings,and he was just a chill, genuine nice guy. And on stage he was just unreal! Miss him so much. RIP Dime and Vinnie, man. Rocking together in the after-after...🤘🔥🤘

I'm buzzing listening to this and it's fucking beautiful! I'm from Texas and the first concert I saw was Pantera on the last year they toured together in 2001. I watched the home videos and like most fans of his I instantly gravated to Dimebag! He just seemed so fucking genuine and this is probably the best interview I've ever heard from him and it solidifies his genuine status. It almost put me to tears hearing this interview because he didn't deserve what happened to him! Thank you for uploading this! And this is the first time I heard him get upset lol.

I saw them on this tour, and ended up going to a club afterward where a Pantera Tribute band was playing, and Dimebag showed up to watch. Such an amazing night. So listening though. He was such an enthusiastic and genuine person with SO much talent left to share with the world.
