So today, I share an idea, that, while likely far-fetched, is still amazingly epic and tons of fun to consider and think about. Actually, I think I understand what she meant by playing. Remember when Agatha said she was talking to her mother and then they took her away? Her mother was dead. She was a ghost and no one else saw her. Maybe they were playing together and she was being careless and some people saw her and realized she was talking to the dead. I still believe the twin or brother theory because if the passed down last name and might’ve even reported her

Interesting theory..I just watched a clip though from the movie where Agatha mentioned how her mother and her used to visit the tree often until the mother was taken away but the judges and she never saw her again... Which I always had believed implied that Agatha's mother was hung for witchcraft as well, this being before Agatha was killed. It could be possible that the mother had another child before this though. And I do thinking would be a boy seeing as a woman COULD still pass on the family name,but nother girl wouldve also been killed while a boy's chances back then we're better

@AlashiaTuol

I think that because the Prenderghasts and descendants are kinda bridges between the living and the dead while alive, they're closer to the physical plane while dead and more able to manipulate it. Basically, normal people become ghosts, Prenderghasts become poltergeists, and the more emotional, the more powerful. (Source: that scene in which Uncle Prenderghast, having shown no other powers besides the ability to see ghosts while alive, blows up Norman's school's bathroom seemingly without intending to, merely because he was really happy while crossing over).

it didnt have to be a twin. As weird and unbelievable as it sounds, people DO get re-married and have offspring with other people where the children sometimes choose the moms name instead of the dads when they grow up, and there is always a chance that mom could have already been pregnant when her daughter died (we dont know when dad left/died) or the sibling could have been older. An older brother/sister works out just as well too because younger siblings often dont have a super strong connection with their older siblings. If she had a sibling who was maybe already out on their own, the bloodline would continue and she still would only really have her mom. Afterall, kids in that era would leave the house WAY earlier than they do now. It wasn't uncommon for children as young as 13 to be looking at getting married. At her age, Agatha should have already been looking at potential husbands for when she started on a family of her own in maybe 4 years or so. I dont think it was some sort of grand necromatic conspiracy. I think that there was a powerful connection with the dead that just got passed down through the generations, watered down as mentioned as it went. but I think that when she said she was just playing, it was more likely that nobody explained to her what her powers were or how to hide them. For her, speaking to the dead was fun. She made new friends that didnt' tease her for being weird. For her, using her powers was a game. she was literally just playing with something she had no idea about.

It did have to be a twin because the trend had to be started right after Agatha died, and she said that she never saw her mother again so her mother couldn’t have started it, so it had to be a twin, because of when the trend of the book reading began.

Maybe Agatha’s health decreased immensely when she was a baby and her mother turned to the help of a different witch to save her life. This managed to save her, but had sinister consequences, giving Agatha supernatural abilities as she was trapped on the bridge between life and death. So she had a connection to both worlds.

Yea I was with you until the leap in logic about how she got blamed for it. It could've just been that she was noticed by townsfolk, maybe she was playing with their dead children. And it may not be necessarily true that the powers were weaker through the generations because maybe no one else had ever been that badly hurt since. Though it may be. Great theory.

Well, I don't have time to read all the comments, and I'm sure that another fan proposed it but anyway, I have an opinion: what if the necromancy genes in Agatha were not from her mother, but her father? Let's suppose: Mr Prenderghast marry a woman and have a daughter with her, but he has to move and abandon them for a reason or another, but he transmitted the necromantic powers to Agatha. The mother was forced to raise her alone, dealing with the necromantic powers she had (and leading for the mother to denounce her to the judges). The father, on his side, move and travel, marry with another woman, creating a new lineage leading to Mr Prenderghast and Norman Babcock. Is it to far-fetched?

Yeah and the father passed his looks down to Agatha and Norman. The reason why the two look similar. This theory and the one in the video both have good stories behind it and is well backed up. One slight issue. How would the story of Agatha come along. Since the father left, he wouldn’t know about Agatha’s death or where she was buried. The mother pretty much ran off since Agatha hasn’t seen her mom since her death. The story also to have been read one year after to start the trend and to keep Agatha at bay. A sibling on the mothers side would have to do it but how would it reach the fathers side. Would the sibling try to find his father and eventually succeed? Inform the father of Agatha and her death and trick him into reading the story at her burial sight every year not knowing the consequence?
@AlashiaTuol
@AlashiaTuol 4 жыл бұрын
"Prenderghast" literally means "Ghost-Catcher," which I seriously doubt is a coincidence. Most surnames in the old days were passed patrilineally and derived either from the place your family came from or from your family's traditional employment. Is it a weird name to have in a religiously conservative, xenophobic and paranoid society? Yes. But their ancestors probably once lived in a place and culture more used to them.
@isabellahinkle7558
@isabellahinkle7558 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, so I believe in the twin thing but I want to try to explain the family deal here. She didn't talk about her father so he probably left. But why would he leave his wife and kids. Maybe the wife kept a secret from him. She might have had the ability to see spirits and that power (kind like discussed in your incredible theory) got passed on. If she had a twin he might have gotten it too. Norman told his family about it so she might have said thing about it too. If she discussed it with her dad the wife might have felt obligated to tell him the truth. Out of fear he left but there's something else. Out of hatred and betrayal of his family lying to him, he might have snitched. Family as a kid are the first people you tell so the mother told her not to tell anyone else. The father might have told the judges about it. Or might even BE a judge. She couldn't find her mother so what if she died too. Now for the twin. If I were him I would have learned to keep my mouth shut about those things. And then teach future generations. But Nolan wasn't taught that. It would be logically impossible to obtain a power like that randomly. His grandmother obviously knows stuff about Norman's condition. But why would his parents not. Does it skip a generation? His great uncle might have had a sibling that was the parent to the grandma. We have to remember hidden genes when think about this. It's kind of like how eye color is made. So Norman's father should have had the hidden gene needed for this. And since it's a "power" it may be easier to obtain.

Please make a theory about the Beldam being the the mother of Agatha. That theory holds more water than you may have originally thought. If you look at glass plated/china structure of the Beldam's face more clearly at the eyebrows they don't seem to proportional to her face. And if you take another look at the Beldam's eyebrows, they seem to have been drawn on/cracked thinner than they should have been. They seem like they should have been way thicker; and this is also due to her skull structure. I have noticed in both women and men that more pronounced the jawline and the skull is the more likely they are to have thicker eyebrows. And based off of the fact that the Beldam uses whatever spare parts are at hand to keep her decaying body from withering away. And as a direct result the Beldam had to use glass/china plates to fix her face. What if the hooked and enlarged nose of the china skull is a direct result of her decaying. Think about it this way... When china breaks some pieces go missing. So all the pieces don't fit the same way they used to. And by using china plates the nose would be the hardest part of her face to recreate. Plus the hair parting and how it is split in the middle of her head. I also noticed how the blue boy had strikingly similar facial features in comparison to Agatha and Norman. I suspect that the boy in blue is related to the two. I suspect Agatha's mother is the Beldam and the Beldam possibly had another child. Blue eyes and blond hair are recessive traits. Therefore the blue boy must have had another father than the father of Agatha.And if you look at the Beldam's hair, it is a caramel color. Therefore the blonde hair Gene must have been present. I suspect that but it must have been another man in the Beldam life, other than Agatha's father. Just like Agatha's hair, the Beldam's hair is parted down the middle. I suspect that Agatha inherited her black hair from her father and so did her brother due to the fact that they were twins. Therefore resulting in a possibility that Norman would inherit the same characteristics. It's also apparent that I did not inherited both of her parents facial and hair features. If you look closely episodes of dead children at the beldam had trapped and killed they all look similar to Agatha. I believe this to be because their nose structure, jaw structure, and cheek structure. If the Beldam is based off a witch/person who came from Massachusetts, the facts and the timelines would match up perfectly. I also noticed a striking similarity between a certain tree, that can be seen in both Coraline and ParaNorman. Therefore, I do not think that your theory on beldam being the mother of Agatha is so ridiculous after all. Please reply to my comment whether or not you think is evidence hold any value. PS I am a big fan of your videos and I often rewatch them to get a different perspective on the movies that we watch in our daily lives. I absolutely loved this movie and the underlying character behind Agatha. For not actually having a whole bunch of screen time you can kind of see her pain. she was just a child with a gift she didn’t understand how to control and when she was killed (basically murdered) she wanted to take her anger out on the men who were supposed to protect her and the town, the judges. They took everything from her just because she was different then

One thing, though: necromancy is divination through communion with the dead, not the act of communion in itself, hence the -mancy, which indicates something relating to divination.. Of course, in popular media, this often devolves into black sorceries which conjure up the dead, with or without souls (depending of how they want to depict the art).

I see your point but I have one as well. Necromancy is the ability to control the dead. Yes it involves speaking with them. But not to the extent you are implying. Speaking with ghosts or spirits is more like a family gift. Passed down from generation to whom the gift chooses. Its not something you practice. Its something given.

I haven’t finished the video (but I will). What if Agatha and her twin were playing and he died whilst they were playing? So, this drove Agatha to find out more about necromancy. Remember when Norman was getting chased down (I don’t remember who)? Maybe Norman is in Agatha’s twins place, looking for his twin but he can’t, they won’t let him because they are already dead and so is he. Then he finds his twin, Agatha. He stands in Agatha’s place for a moment but realises it’s not him, it’s his twin. The reason why they can’t see him or hear him is because he is already dead and but found his lost twin.

And she made a deal with the devil (as per witch rules) and she had two of his kids. That's where their power comes from. That's why both of the kids are necromancers. The town was getting suspicious so the mother puts the blame on Agatha so she and the son can escape, then **insert the rest of your theory here**. But hey it's just a theory. 🤷‍♀️

The words you're looking for are blood magick, magick is a skill and anyone can learn it but its energies can become bound to experienced or frequent practitioners thereby given the descendants of said practitioners natural tendencies affinities talents or just a surplus of energy, however if those powers arent maintained by education and techniques they will delute, the good news is if Norman works at it he can become as powerful as agatha if not more

something that I just thought about today. you brought up in the Corpse Bride video that it seems as though Victor has powers to resurrect (awaken/pull dead people from the land of the dead to the land of the living). you mentioned in this video how that could be explained under the idea that he related to Agatha. and then, a light went off in my brain. FRANKENWEENIE! im sure you've heard of the theory that Frankenweenie and The Corpse Bride are connected, as Victor Frankenstein looks REALLY similar to Victor Vandort. maybe it's possible they ARE related, and thus Victor F. carries the same powers that Agatha had, but less potent, which is how he is able to resurrect Sparkie, as bringing something back to life in the way he did it would be impossible in the era the movie takes place in (around the maybe late 1900s). maybe im looking too much into finding connections, but who knows?

My take on this theory: Agatha's mother (AM) and twin brother (TB) was a power-hungry witch who wanted to become more powerful than she already was. She caught wind of a powerful being in the state Coraline takes place in. As a means to get an impressionable vessel she marries and intends to have a child. It happened to be twins, but she could deal with the other baby later. She immediately uses TB as a temporary vessel so she can speak to the deamon she heard about. Unfortunately, her husband walks in on his wife and newborn speaking in a demonic language, so he has to go. The twins start growing up and as to keep the children from telling everyone AM tells them that what they do is a super secret game. AM is finally summoned to the demon and 'sacrifices' Agatha so she and TB can move away without much suspicion. TB grows up and pretends to forget about his demonic childhood while AM makes small sacrifices to the demon in the well before building a secondary portal in her house to get to the other world easily. TB has had children by now and often goes to read to his sister under the tree. As his mother's health declines he gives the task of reading to one of his children while he takes care of her for a day. AM, or the Beldam lures her only son into the Other World as an offering to be devoured. TB makes it out alive, creating his own portal out of fear and will, but the other world's magic leaves him deformed (de-CAT-formed).

I actually thought you were going to go on the route of her being descended from a god like Kubo. Or from Kubo himself, I mean his grandfather name Raiden is the same name of the Japanese god of thunder and lightning. And alot of her attacks look electrical based. And I always thought of Agatha as being born out of wedlock, as puritan communities especially frowned upon children of those unions. Or maybe if we're going the nonhuman route with Mom being a witch, maybe Daddy dearest wasn't human.

I feel like aggies Dad reported her. He’s never confirmed to be there but he’s never denied to be there either. It’s possible. Aggies Mom and brother probably left town and only came back on aggies death day. Once the judges died aggies brothers child becomes the first curse holder. Then the curse holders niece or nephew succeeded him or her. This succession continues down to great uncle prenderghast who passes it down to his great nephew Norman.

It works. I do think that maybe the power doesn't dilute, it isn't natural. Maybe seeing/talking with the dead is a given, but they would actually have to know the spells to use the curse and other things.

I think Agatha’s dad probably left and got remarried afterwards had a son. I’m thinking he left because her mother died and she was left under the care of the village, but she could still see her mother and didn’t understand that her mom isn’t still there. Otherwise why wasn’t her mother put on trial for being there during her necromancy? Then a family member stumbles across Agatha’s vengeful ghost or perhaps her mother and discovers how to make her sleep every year

What if Agatha had a twin brother who died? It could be that she was given the powers because of her connection with her dead twin which is why she said she was "playing" because she was playing with her brother. It could also be why Norman looks like her if hes in a way, the reincarnation of her dead twin.

Poor Aggie. She really is a complex character and a nice girl. At least now she is with her mom. Her mother was also maybe already dead. Why would she let her die? No she was talking to her dead mom probably. And she is a normal girl seeing spirits. Only the vision was just a vision. It didnt look like that. Its a symbolism. And she has these powers only after death and being angry at what they did to her alas hanged her. Plus her mom seing her die would never just burry her and not do anything to the Judge etc. They had a strong bond so it cant be like that. Only if her simbling fid so but definitly not her mom. Plus playing. She might be playing tag. With ghosts. We all do that actually we just dont see them aaaand they are it. PLUS the story book was about her being a terrible witch and those people who killed her being innocent. WHY WOULD HER MOM READ IT TO HER?! :'D Plus heck this is just kinda stupid when you really think about it. "I was just playing" its no more than this. Aggie was talking to a ghost and someone saw her. That someone went to tell on her and they searched for her at a time when she was playing outside. This makes semse as one of them litterally is showing others the way if i remember.

I don't think Agatha's family would betray nor abandon her like that, but the rest of the story holds up. See, you can hurt someone you love so much, with the best intentions. Her brother and mother probably used the book to keep her at bay the same way Elsa was kept locked away (for example) with the best intentions. Often we tend to forget one big aspect of culture back then: the culture of secrecy. Your husband beats you? keep it secret. you baby has any minor birdth rarity? hide it You have an adventure? humiliation for the rest of your live... and your close family. I don't think her family betrayed her. They did seal her, thinking it was for the best. Oh and no, I don't think the spider demon woman was Agatha's mother. That was one of Kubo's aunt's, after she was defeated she was rebirdth like her father... yadda yadda

The entire theory isn't too far fetched. There needed to be some link in the family tree that connected Norman to Agatha, and symbolism is shown throughout the entire movie, and franchise for that matter. It is hella symbolic that Norman is almost an exact copy of her, and he even gets bullied due to his "weirdness," which can be put as a connection between Agatha and Norman. This connection is amazing, and it really does sell the entire "twin brother" theory. Also, it's not too surprising that the Mother and Brother would pin the blame on Agatha since the townsfolk would be quick to believe that a young female child would be a witch. A young male child though, that wouldn't catch on so quickly. Also, the townsfolk were already suspicious, so the Mother might've seen it as the only way to keep one of her children safe. They might've buried her under the tree as sympathy, reading the book not only to keep the curse away but to also allow her to rest until the next year. Which makes it even more symbolic that Norman, the one who'd represent her twin, is the one who finally managed to give her peace. Also: I think it was implied that the mother was also hung for witchcraft when Agatha said the judges took her mother and she never saw her again. Which would make more sense, since back then it was common practice to just assume anyone related to the witch must also be a witch. This still suggests that there must've been a sibling, a male one, who'd manage to slip past the town's suspicions since not a lot of people accused men of witchcraft. The mother must've known this too, so it once again supports the theory that this was her last-ditch effort to protect at least one of her children, knowing that she couldn't protect Agatha. Thus, the twin must've been the one to bury Agatha underneath the tree, probably out of pity. He reads to her every year to stop the curse and allow his sister to rest. Which makes the fact that Norman, the representation of the twin, being the one to allow her peace to be perfect. The reason behind her death is the reason behind her peace. The mother might've also known of Agatha's ever-growing powers, which is the main reason as to why she needed to do what she did. I'm taking the guess and saying that the twin's powers weren't as prominent, or at least they were better at hiding them. Agatha, on the other hand, wasn't able to. The mother must've noticed them growing over the years, and knew that soon the Townsfolk would catch on. This is why she and the twin needed to report Agatha, which would ultimately kill the mother, allowing the Twin to be safe.

What if Agatha’s dies, and her dad was ALIVE! that’s how the genes get passed cause Agatha’s dad went on to marry another woman on and her father had the power of Necromancy, and passed his powers to his new Chid. And let’s say your theory was used except Agatha’s had no twin it was just her and her mother, Agatha’s mom gave her ex husband the book to keep Agatha’s at bay and Agatha’s original father passed down the book to his kids, leading to that moment. That’s my Theory.
