President Obama answers questions from White House interns about how he remains optimistic, his legacy with the African American community, and on when to compromise. He then says being president is the result of lucky breaks, which you can't always control. But being useful is something that you can control.
00:08 How do you remain optimistic?
02:13 What kind of legacy would you like to leave in the African American community?
06:29 How do you know when to compromise?

I've just recently been going back and listening to some of Obama's addresses, press briefings, and conferences. I've forgotten what a president should sound like - what a leader should sound like. Did I always agree with the Obama administration? No. But I miss it so, so damned much. I miss the times when I felt that our president had the best interest of *everybody*, and not a select group of people, in mind. I miss the times when I felt that our president could represent our nation on the international stage in an intelligent and professional manner. And I miss the times when our president instilled a feeling of hope for the future rather than a feeling of fear.

@@redskins3656 No. The conservatives didn't give Obama a chance too on their platform. McConnell famously said that the GOP's goal should be to make Obama an one term president. They also pushed for the birther theory, even though it was debunked many many times. And do you remember a time when media outrage came from Obama saluting a Marine with a coffee in his hand, and not from admitting on tape you've played down a threat that ends up costing more than 210,000 American deaths (and counting)? No, Obama was never given that chance with the conservatives, so he created his own opportunities for moments like this. This is something Trump can never, and will never do.
@viperabyss

@@redskins3656 Hoax? May I remind you that both the Mueller report (written by a life long Republican), and the recently released bipartisan Senate Intelligence committee report on Russia misinformation campaign both confirmed Russia's intention to help Trump win, by " overtly and almost invariably supportive of then-candidate Trump, and to the detriment of Secretary Clinton's campaign." Additionally, the Mueller report, and Robert Mueller himself, said his report did not exonerate Trump, including obstruction of justice. So no, the only hoax regarding the Russia meddling in our election is the Trump Admin and GOP's attempt at preventing the truth from coming out.

I thought it was quite interesting how he said that these young folks were the most secure generation in the most prosperous time period. You can definitely hear the echoes of history in that statement. At the time he said it, this statement might have seemed optimistic. But now, under the Trump era, it is more clear than ever that Obama’s incrementalism blinded him to genuine disillusionment in the country. You get half-results with half-measures and it could all be dismantled in the blink of an eye, just like Obamacare, if you don’t take your job seriously, Mr. President. You were in a bubble, and you actively stood against progressive policies only to later pretend like you supported them but were forced to settle for less due to so-called ‘pragmatism’. History does not occur in a vacuum; you directly produced the Trump presidency and all of the disasters that came with it. All of the issues that you pretended to care about (military-industrial-complex, income-inequality, justice reform, etc.) deteriorated under your tenure, will now deteriorate significantly under Trump’s, and it’s your fault for not cementing actual precedents. With the weight of the financial crisis, you had the power to repeat history and fundamentally transform America just like FDR’s New Deal during the Great Depression. Yet, you chose to be a product of your time and preach for incrementalism. To paraphrase MLK, the time is always right to do what is right. History books will record your neoliberal legacy correctly and identify your statement for what it really was: not complacent, but complicit. Perhaps the most upsetting fact is that the man who mobilized the younger generation under the banner “Yes We Can”, was the same man that repackaged complicity as complacency and tried to sell it as wisdom to that very same generation.

@@curiousguy310 it's difficult to judge because we don't know- or at least I don't know all the elements involved, and I don't have enough knowledge to take a firm stance on either side of judgement. but seeing this video makes it easier for me to believe that he at least did all those with the best of intentions. there have been moments in my life if the greater context wasn't revealed, an observing party would have judged me badly, but I acted with the best of intentions for all those involved. and the outcome may not have been perfect, but it's also impossible to say that the other outcome possibilities would have been "better". I also am beginning to understand that no single issue stands all by itself. there are multitudes of layers an issue shares its platform with- much that seem unrelated gets taken into consideration. sometimes the best decision is the least popular and seemingly wrong- simply because not all can be seen by everyone. but you could be right too- those could have been a terrible choice over other options. here's the way I see it though: i can consider him 1) having made good decisions, with good intentions. 2) having made bad decisions, with good intentions 3) having made bad decisions, with bad intentions 4) having made good decisions, with bad intensions. he seems like a decent person- he could be a sociopath but I don't get that feel. so I don't think he's made any decisions with bad or selfish intent. so that leaves 1) having made good decisions with good intensions, or 2) having made bad decisions with good intentions. the thing is, I don't think bad decisions can be had with good intentions. it's what the best possible outcome was available then, with the knowledge and experience at that time. if you regret, then you hopefully learn and make better decisions in the future. if you don't learn, then either you are incompetent or you're fooling yourself- to which then I say he has bad intentions since he makes bad decisions knowingly. and I don't think he's incompetent. so despite agreeing with you an your list of things that are either seemingly a bad decision or was in fact a bad decision, how I see the person of Obama is that he's probably made both bad and good decisions with good intensions. and observing how he analyzes and sees how various things are related during his answers, he does seem very thoughtful and articulate, compared to most people I've met in my life and have observed on video.

curiousguy310 The war wasn’t prompted because of oil (war is almost never about oil, since there’s an abundance), that’s just what the headlines want you to believe. The war was to confiscate American military weapons that were left there during their war against Saddam Hussein. These weapons were being used and sold to terrorist groups. When Saddam was killed, it left a power vacuum for jihadist groups to take over the country. This is also a reason why President Obama bombed. Yes, there were innocent civilians, but they targeted that area because of its high rates of terrorist groups. More than likely, those innocent civilians would have been killed in the arms of jihadists or would have been forced into such group. That’s a “game move” that the President was willing to take. I’m sure it was a hard pill to swallow. Now, the jihadists know better than to only promote in their communities. They promote overseas (1) to avoid getting bombed and (2) having a possibility that more than one “important” leader being killed. It’s much easier to catch these smaller jihadist oversea groups than to have a whole country that is overturned by jihadists. The amount of power a country of jihads would have had is astronomical. They most likely would have tried to take over the whole Middle Eastern hemisphere.

How can someone not like this. Obama is giving an articulate, intelligent, humorous and relevant dialogue. This is a President who was forward thinking, This is a President who took time to reach the younger generation. This is a President who is a true leader.

I wasn't a fan of his Politics. But I liked his intelligence, his demeanor, and his thoughtfulness. He was a great leader and he achieved great things at a time when Republicans did not want to meet in the middle. My only criticism of his Presidency is that he wasn't able to reach across the aisle and that really has more to do with Tea Party hardliners than with him. One thing is for certain, we need a return to this kind of leadership. I hope the Republicans can clean house so they can deliver leadership the country deserves. The United States works best when Republicans and Democrats work together towards policy that addresses the problems we face. Domestically and abroad.
@ayeeshahm9078
@ayeeshahm9078 3 жыл бұрын
Good point but I hope you remember that he did reach across the aisle but the other side was so resolutely against him that they rebuffed his every attempt. Remember Mitch's vow to make him a one term president on his first few days in office?! They were so close minded and resistant to his every move and only when the Dems took the house could he advance his agenda. In hindsight, It's crazy how they resisted someone with values like Obama and kowtowed to Trump's every whim regardless of how cruel, evil and illegal.
@captainlou9677
@captainlou9677 3 жыл бұрын
@@ayeeshahm9078 yeah I know. That's why I said it had more to do with Tea Party Hardliners. But Obama did make mistakes early on. He will admit that. When he first ran, I liked him but I felt he needed more experience. At the time I preferred Senator McCain. But his campaign screwed up by choosing Palin as a running mate and that is why I chose to vote 3rd party in 2008. Trump has ruined the Republican Party for years to come. It's unfortunate. Because we need government working together not against each other.

Obama was respected and appreciated internationally, it gives softpower and lets you get things done on things trade/diplomacy/cooperation... giving growth to both countries. Trump has pissed off nearly every ally and neutral countries by repeatedly insulting them, acting arrogant believing that 1 piece of dirty somehow is better then another piece of dirty... and just outright distancing the US from the world ... by starting some weird ass global trade war thinking that in a world where corporations span borders isolationism works. Regardless of what you think of Obama he played it well both national and internationally.
