My Perfect Submariner: Why I Prefer Tudor Over Rolex + Unboxing/Review

Today I not only unbox a Submariner ref. 79090, but after more than a week of serious wrist time and 6 months of hunting, I go straight into the review too. This is highly unusual for me, but when you have owned and experienced as many Subs as I have, it feels amazing to finally find the perfect one.
Why is the allure of the classic Rolex and Tudor Submariners so strong? Why is this reference better (in my opinion) than all other references (both newer and older) that I've owned and tried? Even if it is far inferior to the technical and engineering supremacy of the modern Rolex 116610LN, why do I still prefer this dated Tudor? How does it differ from my previous Tudor 36mm 75090 in blue? And why did I choose to buy this and not the historic Tudor 7928, which I previously reviewed several months ago, or for that matter, the ref. 1680 counterpart from Rolex? Why is this a better value compared to the more desired "Snowflake" submariners?
As well as discussing my personal feelings and thoughts about it, I share why I chose this over the legendary 1960s BlancPain Bathyscape MC4 that I bought and sold quite quickly. So quickly that I didn't even have time to make a serious video about it! Join me for some positives, negatives, and a ton of questions addressed in this special episode about one of my favorite and most iconic watches of all time, and one that will always be in my personal collection.

Love this Tudor... though for me, the 7928 edges it out as one of my grail watches, which your vid on that reference introduced me to. And was lovely to see the Philly waterfront and, in particular, America's most-decorated battleship, the USS New Jersey, behind your shoulder across the Delaware. As a former sailor who served aboard the New Jersey in Lebanon, my invitation is still open to provide you a free tour throughout the entire battleship as only a former crew-member can provide (we're able to go to all the off-limits areas no tourists ever get to see, personally accompanied by one of the battleship's volunteer caretakers, the hardworking docents). Keep up the great work providing such fabulous vids for us to enjoy!

Served aboard an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, and I had the privilege of seeing the Iowa as she was towed down to long Beach harbor. It was a foggy morning and as you picked out her haze gray profile, her guns and how she rode in the drink, I felt awestruck. Awesome, in the truest sense of the word, not the so cal surfer from the sixty's awesome, but a terrible majesty. I loved my ship, and I'm a small boy guy through and through but, you were truly privileged to have served aboard a ship that is a living symbol of American power at its zenith.

Heh. Way back my father gave me a Tudor 79190 submariner. Knowing nothing about watches, my first thought was it was a fake Rolex, lol. Never kept up with the box or papers. I wore it everywhere, doing everything. It is a little banged up, runs fast, and the bracelet is pretty worn, but the lume has faded to an amazing cream color and it is still a great watch.

its not that, imo, but the fact there is a Submariner on the market, made my Rolex. Why would Tudor try to compete it, when they got the BB and the Pelagos out there?
@notDonaldFagen
@notDonaldFagen 4 жыл бұрын
Their big brother would never allow its return. They can't put that name on an 'inferior' timepiece. Even if the average Rolex Sub buyer probably never heard of Tudor. It just can't happen. Besides, Black Bay is still the Sub. Just has its own name and more distinct design attributes to separate it and have an identity. For one, I kind of prefer the look of a coined bezel.

I like the latest Tudor watches. I have a blue face Pelagos, a Pelagos LHD, and a Black Bay Chrono. I was offered the 58, but it wore too small for my bigger wrist. I was also offered the GMT but I have a Rolex GMT Master II BLNR. I just think Tudor want to make some more money from the research and development of the Black Bay range, but I do think Tudor will re-release a Tudor Submariner in the future.

@@notDonaldFagen Thanks for repeating part of what I said. Although I do think Tudor will release a 39 or 40mm sub again once they have got their money from the Black Bay research and development. I have a Rolex 16610, a tudor 79190 and a tudor 76100. After wearing them all I have concluded the 76100 is the best sub for me. Love the bidirectional bezel, high hat plexi and matte dial. At 39mm its extremely comfortable on the wrist and the watch is deadly accurate even though it was made 1985. Its nearest comparable Rolex would be the 1680, but at a fraction of the price the 76100 is a total bargain.

Love these Sub videos! I've tried a few Subs myself, but never a Tudor. I'm a big fan of all of them, especially the pre-ceramic ones, just like TGV seems to be. The point I would add to his video is that, if you own a sub, the more expensive and desirable it is, the less fun the ownership experience is. That is, obviously, because you become scared to damage it. The best wearing experience I got from a dive watch is actually from a Seiko SKX on a bracelet. Not the original bracelet, a replacement higher quality one. To me, it offers the experience a Sub would offer had it not been for the high value. You're not scared to scratch the case or the crystal, and it offers better luminescence than probably any Sub except the lastest references. In terms of wearing experience, I can't praise it enough.

Urban. I am lusting after a Rolex Daytona 116500ln, white dial. As you know, that is a tough pursuit to get for retail from a AD (I have one AD in my local city - I am on the "wish" list as of Feb this year). Myself, I never fallen in love with the Subs or the James Bond look. I am not "aquatic" we'll say, though I am motorsports savvy and I love the look and use of Chronos very much. My love of watches came from the Seiko Arnie, the re-issue my first watch purchase in 16 years and I love it! I can wear it to work or while tinkering around in the garage. I have thought of a Patek 5119G-001 (very close to the Drive movie replica), gorgeous dress watch in it's simplicity and style and a watch obtainable for below it's original retail price (rather than double!). HOWEVER; Tudor is a name that I have learned about in the last year or two of really getting into watches and watch searching and the Tudor Black Bay Heritage Chrono S&G has completely caught my eye, esp on the leather strap. I don't normally go for black dials (prefer white or silver), nor two-toned, but there is a majestic collage of color that makes it so appealing. This is a watch that IS in stock (both leather and metal bracelet) at my AD and as soon as they open again (closed due to covid atm) I am going to try on and likely buy. Thoughts?

Here's what I like about TGV... you are "over the moon" about your new Tudor and you certainly have reason to be. But at the same time I know you understand why I am "over the moon" about my new Timex Weekender chronograph. You are not about snobbery, you are about the enjoyment of watches. And that's why I continue to watch even videos about watches I can't consider acquiring. It's been many years ago now, but I also enjoyed dinner and drinks on the Moshulu.

I Love this watch, it's my everyday favorite! The Tudor submariner i own has Rolex crown and band. This watch. has increased in value quite a bit over last few years. I have owned it for about 7 years, keeps great time, I have dived with this watch, which was probably not wise, for this watch is a vintage watch. I own the Rolex seadweller 16600 and don't wear as much because its value has increased substantially.❤❤

16:56 The Moshulu is also featured in the book, The Last Grain Race by Eric Newby. It's an entertaining account of an Englishman's first sailing voyage as a crew member on The Moshulu with a mostly non-English speaking Scandanavian crew just before World War 2. they made the long trek from England to Australia and back. And they run into some weather around the Cape of Good Hope. A great read if you like nautical adventure

I really enjoyed this one. I'm more of a Tudor than Rolex guy. I also quite like the Tudor Subs. That one is in amazing shape. Beautiful piece. I'll have to be happy with my Black Bay for now, the horror 😂, I can see a Tudor Sub in my future though, absolutely. Cheers!

I don't actually own one -- but the diver I covet is the Seamaster Aqua Terra 2503.33.00, with the cream dial and blue hands. I never thought of myself as a submariner sort of guy until I started watching this channel... and now I find myself attracted to the monochrome subs too, especially like your Tudor with the lume starting to fade.

Hi TGV “My Sub tells me it’s time for a drink...”.😆 Yeah, that might very well be the ultimate complication for a watch... The growing independence of the Tudor company in terms of identity in the later years has undoubtedly made many people realize how cool the watches really are. I experience that even the watch snobs are less keen in terms of putting the Tudors downand are showing a genuine interest in them. Not thereby said that I really listen to these people. But it kind of shows that Tudor has done the right thing... This takes nothing away from the Rolex company. But why do we always have to choose in such a stigmatizing manner? Make your mind up, buy what you’d like to own. Considerations about price and quality is just part of the process. Have a nice weekend and keep up the good work👍

Hey I have a Tudor, Omega , Ball, and glycine I put them all through their Pace's and hand's down for the money the glycine wins hand's down with ball second. A friend of mine from school dad was an upscale for yrs he even agreed and said times and tech have changed and people caught up. He said certain watches between $500 and $3000 can compare with anything under $20k

That Blancpain looked amazing. Shame you let it go, I would have considered it for the same purpose as your AP dress watch. I too would like to get a BP one day, probably for similar reasons though It would have to be 40mm for me. I just got a Tissot Janeiro which I am absolutely in love with however it's at the smallest end of the scale for me since my wrist is 19cm/7.5 inches. What kind of price was the BP? I have a friend with smaller wrists would be interesting to discuss with him!

A real shame indeed, but I have to admit, it made an Orient Bambino seem like a tank, I have never been so nervous about wearing a watch, I guess the high price tag heightened that feeling too. Anyways, congrats on the Tissot, those are so bloody cool, massssssive regret on selling mine but I had to, it funded my wife's DateJust. I will buy it back one day deffo. Enjoy it a little extra for me please. The price of the BP was around 5k, almost the same as this Sub. Best regards, TGV

Great video as always TGV (I hardly ever watch TV now -- I'm always here). I know exactly what you mean. It's only when you have a watch actually in your hands that any preconceptions go out of the window. I recently bumped into a little 1960s Certina dress watch when I wasn't even looking. It's a minter, I got it for a song and I love it more than any of the watches I coveted for years. Keep the videos and the high production values coming. Regards from Blighty ol' chap.
