In today's video I discuss why I'm considering selling some of my Rolex watches. I also share the reasons why I may have discovered my ultimate grail watch, my big problem with collecting Casio watches, and the dangers of wearing a Cartier Santos during a night out with Hugo. In this video I also explore some of the issues watch enthusiasts face in their watch collecting journey, respond to some of your comments from recent videos, and talk about how my recent interview with the world's biggest watch collector, Sandro Fratini, has ultimately inspired some of my collecting priorities. What are your watch collecting goals and how have they changed over time? Please share in the comments!
A special thank you to the one and only @JeffreyMcMahon for his contribution to the watch world and this video.

Two collecting weak points: 1) Wanting to collect too much of a kind (divers, dress) at the expense of getting other styles you also want or 2) buying doubles/triples of a model (one to rock, one to stock). You always move on to the next thing and ignore the one you stocked. Great video as always!

@@MCAIO89 I can easily see that. I used to have the bumblebee and almost bought the retro limited blue edition but decided to sell the bee instead (didn't want to bother with battery changes for the monocoque case). I still have my vintage 300m and wear my Arnie quite a bit as my beater (though it's not really a Tuna, just "Tuna style"). Still have an urge to get another 1000m Tuna but I'm resisting it. So far.

My 2 biggest weaknesses in collecting: 1) Buying a watch I won't like to wear just because it goes so well with one I already have, and, 2) Buying a watch because it's so cool or interesting even if it's one I'd never enjoy wearing.

The 2nd point is a good one. There are tons of beautiful watches out there that are not my style and would not get much wrist time, but in a way it would be nice to own them because of maybe what they represent or what brand they are etc. Collecting something for the sake of... collection? Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean you don't get any satisfaction from it.. or does it?

I feel brand overlap can actually be a key part of building out a collection. I match my watches to my attire, my surroundings, my activities, and my mood. To the degree there is overlap in these things I have overlap in my watches. It is the overlap that can allow for just the right variation for the situation. So if a brand, a model, or a style is something you like I see no issue with owning variations of it. There is no other area of my life that I can be so free to change things up constantly.

My biggest collection weakness is checking off boxes. I’m trying to stop this behavior as I now realize that there will always be another box to check. Instead, I’m enjoying my core four and I’ve yet to add a watch in 2023. Keep up the great work TGV! - BJL

Wonderful video TVG, thank you kindly! For many years I was a one watch collection kind of guy. In recent years I've added a few more watches into my modest collection, and your insights and thoughtful videos have been instrumental in my learning and watch collecting experience. I genuinely thank you for that. My journey isn't without pitfalls though, and here are my two: i) thinking you "need" a certain type of watch (i.e. a diver, or a GADA, or a dress watch, or a luxury watch, etc), when what you really need is a watch that works with your lifestyle. And ii) not fully appreciating what you have - especially before parting with a timepiece.

I became a fan of watches years after I inherited by dad's Submariner. It seems to be a great universal watch that goes anywhere, so despite the hours I've spent discovering amazing watch designs and histories, I'm still just rocking this silver Rolex. Plus it has sentimental value. I sometimes tempt getting a second one to fill-in when the Rolex goes in for servicing. This idea motivates me to keep watching great UG content (and Nekkid Watchmaker).

Never change TGV. I love your consistency of conviction in the watch world. You may have helped me from going over board in the watch collection. I wear my Seiko Arnie as my everyday, Gshock as my beater, Bulova as a dress watch, Arabic Casio for fun, and a cheap Garmin for running/lifting. I love your channel because you're not trying to convince me to buy something I don't need! I really love your videos about the history of watches, and hope you do more in the future! I have room for maybe one more watch. If I did, it would be something like a Tudor Black Bay, Rolex Submariner, or Omega Speedmaster. Something to pass down.

It’s sometimes, only when I watch your channel, and read the comments of other viewers that these do’s and don’ts in my head make sense. @@jipkethey aren’t a luxury brand hence the lack of baggage. That doesn’t mean they don’t make a good watch. SWATCH Group is very strong and hammers it home if it those looking for an easy entry to Swiss mechanical watches. Hamiltonis good, but from the same group, there’s Longines, Mido, Tissot. Hamilton has a certain cache in the States, that’s partly due to its historical ties to Lancaster PA, those other three have sone watches that check similar boxes just as well. I digress. They are solid watches, yes they lack the stigma of other brands, however- who cares what other people think? In actuality, the vast majority of people aren’t looking at your watch and will be ambivalent. A truly fine watch can be absolutely spectacular. That doesn’t mean one need to aspire to own one, but they are worth appreciating for what they are.

I am soon to be baptized and confirmed Catholic and needed to make way for the milestone piece. The Hamilton Khaki field I’ve had for the last year has made me realize I truly do not need more than 1 solid daily wearer. I haven’t worn much else. For my budget I have settled on the black dial black bay 41, a spiritual successor and more rugged watch to the explorer 1 which will continue to be out of my budget for some time I feel. TGV - On the note of creators staying relevant without a big collection, I'm left wondering why we need to stay relevant? Why do we feel this need to create channels that are popular forever? If massive television studios can at best make shows that are popular for a decade and then they fade away, why do we as individuals believe we can do better? As the platform we upload to changes and viewers tastes and interests change, we should expect that at some point we will fade into obscurity as well. It's inevitable really. The choice we get to make is how we will handle it though; will we handle it with grace and accept it, or will we resort to rampant clickbait that soils all the hard work we have done? As you point out, that's the beauty of making solo content that you are passionate about. You don't have to stress about paychecks for yourself and employees, and even when the views aren't there, you're still having fun because you enjoy the topic.. Sorry for the diatribe, but you raised a very interesting topic.

This is a really great point my friend. There's sooooooo much to talk about here. I think we should honestly just get on a zoom call one day and hash it out, one creator to another. For me its because when I started 10 years ago, there was VERY few people talking about watches on YT. Today, I can't keep up, its too much and there's people with massive channels I have never even heard of. Part of it is my responsibility to keep people informed as much as I can, without it becoming an arduous job. Another is because I care about watches, their future, the industries future and I want to grow it. But I feel, not everyone is in it for the good of the industry and enthusiast.. I guess this becomes more a discussion about moral and ethics in business, the nature of consumerism and the whole evolution of social media in how it relates to the watch world. I accept fading into obscurity, trust me, I have Marcus Aurelius on a custom made pendent on my chain everyday for a reason. A very interesting topic indeed, which you just took to another level! 😅😅😅🙏🙏 Grazie my friend. T.

I came off watches after the hype of the pandemic, it was too much, everyone and their dad was suddenly a gray market dealer and it pushed an unreal need for materialism. Videos like these are really good to bring you back down to earth, enjoy what you’ve got. Tbh TGV was a big purveyor of having big watch collections, this is a huge and welcomed shift.

I enjoy your channel immensely and watch/listen when you popup on my notifications. Kudos to you for making the conscious decision toward your collecting strategy. Great video as usual. I understand the difficulty. When I'm out and about and come across a hidden gem or a great deal, or whether it's at an estate sale, antique or collecting event or even a retail store, it can be difficult to walk away. Fortunately, sell a few at our local antique fair a couple times a month. But this in turn ends up funding the next purchase. And some times at the same antique fair that I'm selling, lol. All that and I still manage to hover right around 200 watches in my collection, with about 60 in the semi-permanent status. I'm asked regularly as to how many do I really need, or why so many from one maker? But it's not about that, it is? For me, it's about the thrill of the hunt, the show-and-tell with friends, coworkers and fellow collectors. It's also about the stories behind the watch whether it's about the find or who it was purchased from.

I appreciate your content Tgv! Like talking about watch overlap for instance I recently purchased a Tudor bb58 gilt and was saving up to buy a Submariner. I started to think why buy 2 diver’s so similar and instead bought my other grail dress/casual watch the Dj 126234 and glad I did. Your so true to your content because you always follow through mate and tell the truth from your heart. Also I’m always for the underdog! Thank you again for great content.

First of all , a very enjoyable introduction ! a great sense of humor. I like to keep my collection to about 5 or 6 , I have 2 pieces I will keep and pass onto my sons , and a few others I flip now and then . I find this more manageable and non stressful . I hope you find a your grail and are satisfied when you do .

TGV really has an eye for aesthetics. Every frame of each video has something cool or interesting to look at. The backgrounds are always works of art that are related and thematic to the watch. TGV is obviously an artist.

Awesome and interesting work, TGV!!! 4 or so months ago, I found one of your videos and now have 15 watches. Up until then, I was using the Apple Watch mostly. I don't know if I am enjoying watches as much as I am enjoying your KZfaq videos and some of the others. Lastly, I love when Hugo makes his appearances, he is a treat. Way to go on your delivery, content & humor! Please keep up the great work! Bill

Letting go is very cathartic. I had a watch collection of roughly 24 watches at the beginning of 2023. Granted to amass a collection of 24 watches they weren’t all luxury watches but I had a few that weren’t cheap either. As of written this I now have dwindled it down to 8. I found that I could never possibly wear and enjoy all those watches, it’s impossible. And I want to wear my watches not just admire them from inside an automatic winder. I still plan on selling a few more, not because my love for watches has diminished, instead I’ve found a new appreciation for watches and for me that means a small curated collection of watches that make me happy, instead of impulsively buying simply because Hodinkee says I need another one in the collection. I’m glad I took the leap.
