No one has EVER said "don't be a dick" in such an elegant way. I feel like this should be plastered in front of a bat-signal-like projector and beamed into the sky in every city (with The Urban Gentry crest above it of course). It had to be said...and no one says it quite as eloquently as TGV. I think this might be my favorite video TGV...oh and I'd half consider buying anti watch snob pills as gag gifts if they really existed (maybe full of jellybeans?).

this channel has grown on me... I haven’t worn a regular watch in 10+ years, but I’m leaning towards getting a dress, chronograph/mariner, a beater, and a fitness tracker. Your channel has taught me a lot... almost too much, as there are too many choices.. but what I really appreciate, is that despite the initial impression of a snobbish British guy, you’re really an earthy guy, who often mocks his perceived image with wit and humor. I’ve probably watched some 20 videos so far, and I like you more with each viewing.... this being one of the better ones. Thanks for your work and dedication, and to help neophytes like myself to build a modest collection on a budget. Ciao!!

16:17 So true...I work in a hospital with surgeons and anesthesiologists that have very high incomes. The people who have a Rolex or other expensive watches tend to be more arrogant and difficult to work with (but not always). One anesthesiologist that I have a lot of respect for wears a G-shock all the time. I also don't agree with wearing flashy expensive watches when caring for sick and poor people so I wear a Timex. Plus when you make that much money and you know you could buy one if you wanted one then it's not that impressive anymore and you just go put on your Timex or G-shock and go to work.

These days everyone in medicare wears an Apple watch or a smart watch. The other day when I was in a hospital (haven't set a foot in one for years) I noticed everyone had an Apple watch and at first I was baffled because these people could easily afford Rolexes and Pateks. And then it clicked, the smart watches have all these health perks like heartbeat monitor, blood pressure sensor and now oximeters included. It's like a dream watch for them.

I know this is a pretty old video, but I feel the need to thank you for your channel. This is by far the best watch channel, way better than most review specific channels because of this sincere way that you have to behave and not letting the snobs take over. Horology is more than watches, and I can be a horologist wearing a Casio or a Rolex. But in any regards, thanks to your teachings, I'm finally starting to build my proper watch collection. My first swiss piece, a Glycine Combar Sub is on its way in the mail, and there will be more to come. Thank you for your sincerity and your down to earth attitude, TGV. Chao!

#7 indeed is the most important. I started this hobby with an oversized Diesel watch (with excessive anti-reflective coating). I loved that watch... Bit it was broke after 3 months so I tossed it. I began researching and found out Seiko was a good value proposition. I bought an snzh53j1 and a Dan Henry 1964. Now I'm in love with watches and I'm going to buy a Sinn 556 or a Nomos club campus... I'm actually mad I got rid of the Diesel one because that one started it. Thanks for your videos. A joy to watch them.

Hey there, you know I must confess that the first time I accidentally stumbled across your channel upon hearing your voice and accent my knee jerk reaction was " English snob showing off his expensive watch collection," but, although I'm by no means a collector, I've always enjoyed and been a little fascinated by watches so decided to continue watching. Now I should explain that I've lived in Canada for thirty years but was born and spent my formative first twenty-one years in Scotland so I'm naturally, if not genetically, predisposed to detest snobbery in all forms. Well I owe you an apology, despite your " received pronunciation " accent and intonation ( I'm just kidding! ), you are obviously as far removed from being a snob as can be. A gentleman who doesn't judge by superficial, meaningless trivialities and there's a lesson there, myself included, for everyone particularly in the charged atmosphere that we live in these days. All to often it's far too easy to point to the few differences between us than the multitude of commonalities we all share. That said I've become a subscriber and thoroughly enjoy your show. All the best and continued success!

The last bit is important. Before I even got into watches and before I even knew what a Submariner was, I bought a large 44mm gold Invicta because I thought it looked nice. Since then, my watch collection has expanded greatly and my tastes have changed massively. While I rarely wear it now, that gold Invicta watch still looks great to me and is a reminder of how I entered this fascinating community. Maybe an individual just likes the look of the watch and they just want to wear something that they, themselves, are proud of.

Hey Gentry, thank you so much for these videos. Just got into the world of watches and it has been incredible so far. What you said near the end really freed me from the pressure I felt when I was browsing different sites/forums about watches. I got into the world of watches (literally like a week ago) because my girlfriend bought me a chronograph watch from Bulova. It was my first ever watch of age 23, and I absolutely loved it in the beginning but everybody is talking about better watches and what I could have gotten for that price point. Not to mention how people talked about what the ideal watch size should be on my wrist (46mm case and I have a wrist size of 7 inches). It really began to bother me and I was wondering if I should get a different watch. After watching your videos, I realized that the sentimental values and the preferred taste should ultimately be the judging factors when choosing a watch. So thank you for showing me what the core values of the watch are about. I still love the watch that I got from my girlfriend :)

I started wearing vintage watches back in the 80s. They were small because that's what the style was at the time. Only recently did I learn that I was 'supposed' to wear a certain size watch for my wrist, but this is a recent development. My wrist is also 7" wrist but I'm comfortable with my 34mm watches. I tend to dress vintage so the large watches look out of place on me.

I also have a Seiko Samurai, Casio Mudmaster and a Vostok Amphibia. Oh, and a Timex Waterbury. @@thorodinson376 The idea with fitness trackers is that you wear them all the time, not just when you're doing exercise. They're great for keeping you active throughout the day and reminding you to move. But as watches... well let's say not all of them are very satisfactory in that regards. Personally I wear a regular watch on one wrist and a Fitbit Flex 2 on my other wrist because it's only a tracker, not a watch, and it's fairly discreet.

Great video. About size, though: perhaps lug to lug is more important than watch diameter. Take Nomos Tangente for example, or Zenith Elite Chronograph Classic. I compared the latter with 42mm JLC MCC, and it turned out the Zenith has enormous lug to lug length. Thanks

Im slowly coming to terms that people who snob around probably don't own anything. I was saving up for the Tissot powermatic diver as my first ever automatic watch and my dad gifted me his 12 year old ORIS small seconds 7609 from nowhere as a "welcome gift" to the horology world and I was over the moon! Though it is pretty much beaten up with deep knocks on the case, and scuffs from daily use, but somehow I see extreme beauty in it and its no doubt the one watch I'll always keep it with me.

Hello fellow earthlings! One important point is missing. Not every watch is about style ore fashion. I wear my grandfathers universal Geneva pole router date when I need the spirit of my "tribe" around me ! Some Passed down watches are more than a timepiece , if this makes sense?

P. Kelly Stark 939393 After few research both of us are not totally wrong. French is my native language so I can tell you I’ve never heard someone using « déclassé » with this meaning. Your definition of the word is right but it’s more an « English thing » to use it in this sense.
