You should definitely listen to their "81-82" 12" EP "Released in November 1982, it compiles the two tracks from New Order's second 7" single ("Procession" and "Everything's Gone Green") from September 1981, as well as "Hurt" and a longer 12" version of "Temptation", taken from the third single, released in April 1982. "Mesh" was taken from the 1981 Benelux 12" Everything's Gone Green." that's a great one. I would do that 82 era EP over Republic any day.

For a first time reaction, you're very astute. I agree with the comment you gave about New Order making interesting new tracks with the same ideas. I think you know, as I previously said, I feel you should review Republic. Regret is a fine single but isn't even my favourite song on the album! I think it's one of their best albums and ends the original band in a dark brooding mood (Gillian left before Get Ready was released, in 2001, and the four original members were never again in the band at the same time). Whether you like Republic, of course, depends on your taste and what you like about the band. My only concern would be giving it a fair chance since you've heard all this negativity over it and this may subconsciously affect your reaction...

Too late to notice, but I'm curious about the Republic fandom. For me it was a train wreck of an album, a true horror show with multiple "worst ever song" contenders for the band, and it sticks out that way quite badly (Chemical, Liar, World etc). I will put "Special" and "Regret" up there with almost any New Order song ever recorded for sure, two masterpieces. The chorus to "Times Change" is also some of the best singing Bernard's ever layed down, but overall it strikes me as a mix of god awful tunes, with mediocrities, and two stellar gems in Regret and Special (Avalanche is also lovely). Young Offender had potential to me, but was ruined by the production. Spooky, Ruined in a Day, World, Liar, Chemical, for me would make a top 10-20 list of their worst ever songs and they're all piled into one album. Glad you were able to glean some joy out of it though (I'm partial to PCL, Low Life and especially Technique).

New Order's first eight singles released between 1981 and 1984 were not taken from any album. If you don't listen to Substance, you're missing out on some of their best material.

Thanks for doing these reactions. Brotherhood has a special place for me as my first introduction to New Order. I didn't really like it at first because I wasn't used to their unique sound but ended up loving it. And of course, was introduced to the full catalogue that way. I still remember buying a cassette of Unknown Pleasures after getting to know late 80s New Order and wondering how is this the same band. What a fascinating band, love them so much. Can't wait to see you react to the Substances because hardly any of those songs are on the albums and the singles are great. Joy Division especially, the singles (disc one side two) are something else. And Everything's Gone Green, True Faith... wow... going to be a good couple of reviews! I think Technique is up there with their best. Some of the songs are the same old New Order dressed up in new clothes, but some are just flat out brilliant.

Thanks for the review - but Broken Promise is absolutely superb after a few listens. Really goes oomph. I think the songs on this record were great, but it sounds like one of those punk records that was produced in somebody's bedroom. Way of Life and Broken Promise would be floor-shakers with the right production.

I don't think you need to react to "Republic" because it came after the bands first breakup. They were separated for a few years and after they came back, they didn't work nearly as well as a band again. Regret is great though.

I think that this is better than Low Life, but still not all that great. I remember buying it on vinyl in Oct 1986, during a lovely sunny day with golden leaves falling all around. Whenever I listen to side 1, especially the outros to Weirdo and Way Of Life, with their subtle melancholic touches, it replants that beautiful imagery in my mind. Other than that though, the band still come across as a bit directionless and unfocussed. The final track: Even though I kind of understood the hidden subtext of "Will you all please stop comparing us to Joy Division! Look, here's us doing a silly song where I can't keep a straight face singing it - you see, we're normal fun chaps!" Even so, I don't care whether you're The Beatles or Beethoven, I didn't just pay £5.99 of my hard-earned cash to hear studio outtakes. It just sounds like they don't give a crap. I also recall that I had to take the vinyl record back to the shop and exchange it for the tape cassette version, because the vinyl record jumped so much. (I at first thought that the ending of Every Little was just my record player). At this point, I was almost ready to stop listening to NO, as other bands were emerging and playing exciting, relevant music, taking the spirit of punk and bringing it to new places. In particular, a young four-piece from Leeds who hadn't yet released an album had already captured my imagination/heart very vividly with a string of impassioned singles. (In fact, what a good idea for a First Impression: 'George Best' by The Wedding Present). However, re NO, the best is yet to come, for they overcame their lean period soon after this, and released the blinding (non-album) single 'True Faith' / '1963' the following year, and then their (in my opinion) best album 'Technique' in early 1989.

What's strange is that I had this on CD, and gave it a lot of listens, but kind of forgot it all until watching this...then it was like "oh yeah, i remember this". So it's a pleasant album, but for me it wasn't enough to stand the test of time. Not like Power Corruption and Lies, which stayed with me.

This is my favourite New Order album. I had a similar reaction when it first came out; there's so much going on but it's a real grower and still surprises me to this day. State Of The Nation should never have been added; it's garbage, still under the influence of Arthur Baker by the sound of it, anyway.

@@AlexHaitz Great! Funnily enough, in the run up to its release, it was rumoured to be an acoustic album - there's some anyway on Way Of Life and the funny and moving Every Little Counts (with its characteristic sour note at the end, like audible spit in Lonesome Tonight, and the "..so why don't you piss off" line in Your Silent Face. Genius).

Always agreed with the general consensus that it has muddy production and sound, and inferior songs to PCL, Low-Life and Technique. There are also just bizarre choices. "As it is when it was," should've been an acoustic song, full stop. Its a beautiful piece of music ruined by suddenly blaring bass that Hooky brings into it, followed by the heavy percussive drums. Reminds me of how R.E.M. really figured out how to play King of Birds on the road, simplifying it, stripping it down and making it a truly gorgeous piece. Still features electrified playing, but the bulk of the piece is played with subtlety in their live show clips, the Marshall drums are gone for the most part replaced with bongo's, and quiet drumming, the heavy electrified piece is reduced to a simple part played by Buck etc. AIIWIW needed that. Instead it was just a mix of beautiful playing combined with bombastic stupidity that stomped all over the gorgeous intro. On their own the songs stand out to some extent, Weirdo is fantastic, AIIWIW had the potential to be spectacular, BLT is greatness, All Day Long is a great lost track, Angel Dust is a misfire but with some great elements, and even the goofball reinterpretation of Lou Reed with Every Little Counts, is lovely, with some stunning synth work towards the end. Broken Promise and Way of Life suffer at least in part due to their location, the 4th and 5th, Hooky Bass heavy songs in a row. I love his playing but for whatever reason on Brotherhood side one, it becomes wearisome after a while (which is funny because flip it over to BLT, and suddenly it's the most beautiful playing you can ever have imagined).
