Let's take a looks at Seneye Reef Monitor and Measuring PAR with this fun device. What's important it to pay attention to the PUR estimations. That's what really counts when dealing with a planted aquarium.

Great video, didn't expect the par on the floodlight to be that high! Will be interesting to monitor plant growth just on the flood light itself. Got myself a fluval fresh and plant 2.0 for my 100L. Waiting to see how my DHG will react to it.

I have been using a 20 watt floodlight on a 10 gallon and it is pretty decent but I am upgrading to proper planted tank grow lights to gain full spectrum.

I read that the best meter for reading the Finnex lights are the Li-Cor since they're able to measure more of the spectrum. Either way, this is handy info! Thank you!
@TheWaterBox

That's the standard in the industry but it's also very expansive. This is not as accurate but affordable... (well, mostly affordable lol)

It makes me wonder what the difference is, if it's pretty reliable (like increase PAR by X% if you're measuring with this meter vs a Licor when measuring Finnex), and if anybody has even tried to test this.

My 40G aquarium, having a built in hood, which is part of the living space furniture, designed to take 3 x 39w T8 tubes, dictates that most modern LED fittings cannot be accomodated. (Wife will not allow a disruption to the furniture look...so no open top tank). Looking at two slimline LED floodlights(which could fit inside the hood) at 30W each (One at 4000K & the other at 6500K) would result in increased PAR at 16 inches depth of tank, but with little data provided on spectral curve. Would the fact that two different kelvin rated lamps were used be 'more likely' (I realise impossible to know for sure without the spectral curves) to cover more of the blue and red peaks that the plants prefer? I thought i could mount one at the front of the hood pointing slightly towards the back and the other, mounted at the back pointing forward to give a more even spread of light? Also, since i cannot adjust the height of the lamps above the tank, if i find i have too high a par value, can i simply put in a diffuser between the lamps and the tank, such that i have a more even spread of light, but reducing the par to the level needed? Do diffusers change the spectral curve? If so, could a diffuser be tailored to hit a specific colour peak? I wish i could afford one of those meters, to run lots of experiments....just so many questions :-) Thanks for all your hard work. Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated.

Kelvin color only really matter to you on how it makes your tank look. It has nothing to do with plant growth but if you're growing mostly green plants, daylight 6500k-7500k will make your tank pop.. Yes you can use a diffuser (one that won't melt on you! lol) . I dunno what you're growing but for a low tech on a 40b 2x 30w would work. What I'd do is run 2x 50w and 1x 100w grow light (flood light model) that's decently priced to give the tank some of the red spectrum. Since it's a grow light it'll peak at the required nanometer plants can use efficiently to grow. It'll make your tank look red but you put it on a seperate timer so you can turn it off when you just want o look at or show off your tank but leave it on mostly to grow plants.

@@TheWaterBox Thanks for your reply. I had read somewhere about correlating the Kelvin figure to the nm figure using an approximate arithmetical constant, but i guess this is now proven to be wrong. ie 2897768 divided by 6700K = 432nm, 2897768 divided by 4200K =690nm etc ie the daylight rated floodlight(6700K) gave more of the blue spectrum and the warm white rated floodlight(4200) gave more of the red spectrum. Thanks again.

I'll look it up but I dunno if that is even possible but I could be wrong. I have to see how this is being calculated. Do you know where you got this from?

Great video! Can you measure without water to see the difference at same distance? Were those floods 6500K? Even though par has nothing? to do with lux it was cool to see it go up along with par. More watts more par more lux more better? Curious if you got a lux app for your phone?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 5 жыл бұрын
I can but the Seneye is meant to be measure in water so I'm not sure if the reading will be correct or not. The flood were between 6000k and 6500k. LUX is good to measure mainly to find the wear on a light. You can have a 100 watt light with 10,000 LUX but have 20 PAR on a light at 5". For example, I can buy a black light for a rave that uses 100 watts to power, pushes 10,000 lux (not sure if that's possible, but if so, everything would be so purple) but have no par what so ever.

Great video !! Off the topic , I have a question for you. Using an undergravel filter on aquatic soil of any type (NOT DITY/SOIL) Will this help the plants grow better by drawing nutrients & oxygen to the roots from the water column
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 5 жыл бұрын
In theory. Get substrate that has cec value which is most planted tank substrate (like eco complete) and dose you water column.

i have an under gravel filter , ive found it most helpful with helping my plants to take root more than my other tank w/o undergravel filter. And of coarse i have ecocomplete

Cool tool. By chance does the LED's CRI numbers effect the PAR, PUR, or spectrums? CRI is Color Rendering Index number. CRI>90+ is considered to be as close to natural light sunlight as possible right now.
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 5 жыл бұрын
No, CRI is more about how basically vibrant the color is under the specific Kelvin rating of the light. Since Kelvin rating doesn't affect plant growth, the CRI will not either. No bearing. BUT good to know for you so you know how vibrant the color will look in your tank i.e. CRI 100 on a 6500k light will make daylight look more vibrant verse a light with CRI 50 at the same Kelvin (It'll look more dull, more saturated)

Your readings for the Finnex Planted + seem low compared to what others have measured. Here are measurements provided in a post in The Planted Tank forum. These were done with a Seneye Par meter. These numbers corresponds more closely to those measured by Cory at Aquarium Co-op for the Planted+ who used an Apogee meter. Do you feel the age of your lights could degrade the output that significantly? 22" PAR=42 PUR=58% 18" PAR=48 PUR=58% 14" PAR=57 PUR=59% 12" PAR=60 PUR=59%
@TheWaterBox

Yeh. I think it has to do with cleaning the glass of the light itself. I noticed it was cloudy. Also the water isn't completely clear in the tank. Again, this is just a quick playing around with the monitor. The light is only less than two years old so it shouldn't be that far gone.
