Autism transitions can be hard sometimes and unfortunately, the bike pedal came off at a bad time. Braylee has been really good with transitions lately, but when they come unexpected with no chance to prepare, they can be very tough. Despite this happening, we focus on the positive! listening to her little giggles and stims via B Cam is the best thing ive experienced this week honestly. and I caught a baby toad the other day, which is a pretty delightful experience, so that's saying something edit: her and abbie should start a metal band! B's got the drums and singing, abbie can scream xD id listen to a metal cover of wheels on the bus by those 2!

Loved the little giggly noises! She's such a little rainbow bundle of happiness! I am not diagnosed as autistic but I definitely know what you mean about being overexcited = overemotional. I feel that sometimes.

I’m a direct support worker and one of the 2 kids i work for has fairly regular meltdowns.. i notice that she seems to have meltdowns following extreme emotions of any kind.. sad or scared or tired of course, but also excited and happy. She is non verbal as well, but from watching her its like she feels these emotions SO intensely that she just can’t regulate sometimes.

Yeah we see more emotional outbursts with Braylee than actual meltdowns or other behaviors it seems like. Similarly from overexcitement and such

I could not help but to smile at the giggles! We got that one really nice day....and down south of the cities snow the next day. That's MN weather for you. The B cam was pretty cool. Braylee singing wheels on the bus at the end just ended the vid where it began...happy.

How I have learned to explain those moments “ we all have a figurative emotional pressure cooker going on” joyous or anxious, emotions have a way of spewing out fast , loud, and hot when there is a lot of them going on all at once!

I mean kids don’t always make the best noises in general, it’s all preference and you’re allowed to feel that way! I know I have my moments of that. We are glad that others enjoy it too and not just us though. Makes me feel better about not being anxious when she’s making all her sounds in public

You guys are so blessed with how joyous and musical she is! I love to bicycle and had a trailer that I used to take my son Justin in when he was about her age. I stopped because I ride too long and too far, causing him to get bored and throw his shoes (among other things) out of the trailer without me being aware. I wish I knew of such an attachment as this way back when; he would have benefited from the activity and engagement.

We really are and we make sure that we don’t take it for granted either. I could see that happening. We have to be pretty conscious of how far we ride because of her mood too. It’s generally not too far of a distance but enough to enjoy. I think this specific company is smaller and we just happened upon it, I don’t remember how. It’s a good activity to do so together definitely and get out and exercise while knowing she’s secure in there. She loves the sensory input of the wind too.

I'm definitely including a drum with her little polymer doll I'm making y'all, so in years to come you can look at it and remember that she's loved by so SO many and the hours enjoyment you've had listening to her n her drum set, it really was a great birthday present, is the house that you live in close to neighbours if so how have they reacted to the drumming? oh she really did love that bike ride, so many smiles, it makes my heart happy to see her like this, I had another bad night last night, me and the hubby are binge watching a crime show and it included a case of a woman getting beat up, so I think that's what caused the nightmares I had, but on the bright side I didn't have a flashback while watching it so that's a improvement at least, but yeah after a bad night just watching your vlogs brings a smile to my face and I (and the hubby) can never thank you enough for that, usually a bad night goes into a bad day, so you have brightened up my entire day, thank you I was thinking of telling you off because David (which is my brothers name) was riding on the wrong side of the road then I remembered you lived in America not the UK lol 😂😂😂😂 it's one of those days already

Oh YES. Over excitement in my little guy is pretty common lately. It leads to eloping and even aggressions and then like you said meltdowns. We work on being calm and breathing before and during super preferred things!

It’s hard because you want them to enjoy things but when it gets too much it’s just too much and they can’t handle it sometimes. It doesn’t happen often, but still happens. She didn’t go full meltdown thankfully but definitely was struggling and overloaded

I've never seen a bike attachment like that before, seems super fun. I just had training wheels as a kid, and was confined to a specific parking lot. My mum didn't think I'd ever be able to ride a bike without training wheels (my little brother was riding circles around me without them before I could keep a bike upright). I'm still not paticularly stable on a bike, but I've been able to (for the most part) keep bikes upright for a few years now. I much prefer roller skates or a scooter though. Also awesome drumming Braylee!

It’s really the best way for all of us to ride together so far. We have been using roller skates and soother too so she can practice and use the variety and use which she prefers 🙂

We didn’t get much snow at all this year, it does get cold enough to freeze so it’s really turned to just ice piles and they’re melting pretty quickly as the weather warms up 🙂

Thank you so much for posting the video. We’ve been looking for bike trailers for our son who’s 6. He’s has low tone and can’t manage a bike, he also had autistic tendencies (he has pws) and seeing your daughter having so much fun has helped us make up our minds on what to get so he can join in on bike rides.

Aw I’m glad to hear it! I know there are many adaptive bikes but they can get pretty expensive and see,Ed more for bigger kids when we were looking and this was a nice compromise for us and she really does love it. ❤️

Watching B's pedal action and absolute joy as she sits behind you makes me think she might enjoy a recumbent trike. It could be a more logical transition in her mind and for her body. I also get emotional overwhelm if I have a great time or a hard time or too much visual and auditory input. I need to immediately get to a calm quiet place alone before I meltdown and start shaking and crying and struggling to breathe. I am learning to not try to push myself to stay in a situation past when I am on the verge of meltdown because it can get dangerous. I have come close to running into glass doors because I feel the need to escape faster than the doors can open. In the last couple of months I have been getting a tickle in my throat when I feel anxious and if I am eating or drinking I can come really close to throwing up as I try to calm my throat down. The chance of throwing up in public then raises my anxiety. Then now that people are panicking over Corona virus me coughing in public doesn't look great. So that makes me more anxious

She has a little bike with training wheels already that she can ride, it’s just a safety issue because she can get too far ahead and won’t stop and doesn’t understand safety. So having her ride is the safer option at this point. She doesn’t often have it happen where she’s overly excited but it was her first ride since winter so that could play a part. I understand that. Anxiety really sucks and I deal with it and sometimes everything just makes it worse in that situation.

That's the joy Ari experiences at the playground & fun places like that, and she never wants to stop, so she won't come to me when it's time to leave. It's one reason I'm scared to take her to Disney, I'm worried she'll have so much fun she'll want to do every ride over and over and over and will have a meltdown about leaving every one lol

I think it helped us to go to a smaller similar place with rides and characters etc so we knew how she would do at Disney.

I have meltdowns from extreme emotions quite frequently. I havent quite found a way to deal with them yet because they go a bit differently to ones from outward senses. Its harder to remove the thing overwhelming you when its an emotion.

I'm also autistic and I have experienced the too much fun excitement leading into a meltdown. From my experience it's like when you eat too much cake and you feel sick. instead cake it's sensory input and instead of your stomach hurting you feel really overwhelmed and then meltdown. That's been my experience B's might be different. I hope my analogy made sense 💖

It really is awesome when she has a camera to give her perspective. It definitely gives us insight as to what she may be paying attention to in a situation and also her perspective. It really helps us understand potentially more of what she experiences.

Has Braylee learned how to walk/mount/glide on a balance bike? Have you spent bigger money on an 18” size big kid balance bike for her? Just even for fun riding in the driveway and at playgrounds. Have you tried the tag-along curved bike attachments that are basically tandem-bike for younger kids who can’t ride independently yet, it connects to your seat post and the child sits upright on a regular bike seat and pedals. Do you plan on getting a custom 3wheeled big kid trike with handbrakes and a basket when she gets older/taller/bigger?

She doesn’t have the coordination and balance for a balance bike. It she does have a bike with training wheels that she can and does ride, we just don’t take her out with it as often because she will pedal away very quickly and doesn’t have the safety knowledge and won’t stop. Our driveway is also a steep downhill straight into the street and she doesn’t understand braking. We would have gotten that kind of tandem over a trailer but worried she would just hop off so we wanted something that she would buckle into. So for now this works.

We like the DJI Osmo action cam better but in this video we used both. One was on her helmet and the other was attached in front of her to get her face 👍🏻

She was so giggly on that ride it was so lovely to hear and also to see from her view was a good idea. Shame it didn’t end so well but it was good whilst it lasted, I did wonder on the way round why you asked if she needed a break. Her drumming is awesome, is that drum kit at home?

She gets overly excited and we have parks around too so sometimes we will stop and play on a ride. Overall it was good though so the bad didn’t outweigh it. It is a drum kit at home. It was her Christmas gift 👍🏻

also, I don't get meltdowns from being overly excited bc its hard to get me super excited. but being excited does take a ton of energy when I do get that way, so afterwards im really tired and/or grumpy and need to be alone for sometimes up to a day or so afterwards. but im not sure how much of that is autism related bc I also have anxiety (really exciting situations also tend to be anxiety inducing; like concerts and stuff) or my ehlers danlos syndrome (exciting situations also tend to be physically exhausting, partially bc I sometimes struggle to complete simple tasks like walking or writing, but im also hyper as hell when I get excited, bc autism)

My sister didn't learn to ride bike with stabilise till she was 9 last year

I noticed that when you are riding your bike and have the wewho in the back when you slow your bike or stop peddling her peddles continue to rotate and fast, hers don't ever stop. I'm wonderong if she might also be having a melt down due to that. Her body is in constant motion.

Hers are not connected, she is the one pedaling them. She could stop at any time. It works just the same if she was to sit there without pedaling 👍🏻

I’ve had bad anxiety attacks from psyching myself out on thing like going on rides and going to events ending up tiring myself out afterwords

It can be exhausting to feel emotions so heavily, especially if it’s anxiety. She gets this from over excitement

She does have a bike with training wheels. We just can’t ride our bikes with her because she goes super fast and won’t stop so it’s a bit of a safety issue

Braylee peddle for a long time. I think she may have been tired on the way home. I think she wanted to get home.

She doesn’t have to pedal and knows that she can just sit there. The pedals don’t have resistance. It did upset her when the one fell off though.
