Existential ideas can be found in Eastern and Western philosophies dating back many millennia, and these have inspired psychoanalysts and psychotherapists for over a century. In this talk, Emmy van Deurzen will give a historical overview of the roots and evolution of existential analysis, and will cover the key contributions of existential philosophers to the psychoanalytic movement, including Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Husserl and Heidegger. She will then present the existential-phenomenological school of psychotherapy in greater detail and will particularly focus on her own, well established, method of existential therapy, including her four world’s model and structural existential analysis (SEA), which includes working with time and space, as well as with the emotional compass.
Emmy van Deurzen is a Philosopher, Counselling Psychologist and Existential Psychotherapist. She founded the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regent’s University, the Society for Existential Analysis and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at the Existential Academy in London. Her application of philosophical ideas to psychology, psychotherapy, and counselling has been instrumental in establishing the existential paradigm in the UK and elsewhere in Europe and around the world. She lectures internationally, and her books have been translated into well over a dozen languages.

Beautifully spoken, and emphasized. I respect the fact that you bring out points about the effect of psychology and psychotherapy has on humans. Psychology and other theories focus on the pathology, and can set humans up to stay complacent in their circumstances. I truly believe to have an understanding of our view of the thing that we are going through, is much better than becoming the thing. Moreover, yes positive psychology is a practice that is synonymous with what the Bible teaches us in overcoming our situations. Thank you for a very comprehensive explanation of Existentialism.

I no longer use the word genius, but rather, "holistic genius" vs "fragmented genius." This brilliant beautiful woman is a holistic genius--both an expert and an eclectic--coupled with a meaningfully integrated vision and executed mission for self and humankind.

Your honest observation brings to light for me , how much I miss well written books . Spoken vs written word . Affective nuance is valuable (spoken) but my digestion seems better suited to reading. Ha.

Brilliant lecture. Having been in and out of therapy for much of my adult life, I'm always looking at new approaches. I'm intrigued by this but it seems to pivot on finding a passion(s) to build towards. And this is part of my problem, a real lack of ambition or drive for anything. If I could find something, I can really see this approach working. I shall investigate further.

Too bad the background color of the slides was so low-contrast. Perhaps future presentations can rectify that? Her material is worth seeing clearly. Is there a way to see the diagrams she didn't have time to present?

This philosophy is directed to those both sides of emptiness in out and from within everything everywhere outside. Directly your life again is as she said is a chore in sociology to attach meaning to what is psychologically broken and not repairable in the modern world and culturally in the scientific mind.

48:20 These are not "scientifically proven facts", scientists, and good philosophers, will never use terms like that to begin with. The smiling experiment is a non-starter due to its inherent priming effects. How do you test for "helping others" as being the cause for someone to feel better? These are good ideas, but we need to be careful not to "doth profess too much".
