I'll never forget day 1 of my philosophy class, my professor told us how his friend (another professor at a different school) went down such a deep path of philosophy that he ended up taking his own life. He never mentioned what he got into specifically, or whether he was dealing with mental illness, but it's trippy shit to get into. Solipsism especially.

Nietzsche was absolutely not a nihilist. His philosophy is about affirmation of life and living it fully. In fact he criticizes nihilism quite often.

So true,it starts with thinking about something I said or haven’t done , then slowly but inevitably ,thoughts roll around to how myself,or anything exists, who made god(supposing god exists) and why is there anything. Then,as the morning birds begin to sound off, in a bit of an anxious panic, I manage to nod off .

As a philosophy major, much of our education was based on reading and not actually speaking these words or names. Many of the writings are translated from German, French, Greek, etc. The only time we ever heard these things spoken was during lectures, and even the professors differed on their pronunciations. My point is that just because you mispronounce a word or name doesn’t mean you misunderstand it.
@goldmund2902
@goldmund2902 5 ай бұрын
@@robsutton3092 Nobody has accused him of not understanding. I am German, so this sounds just funny in my ears - though, i don't expect anybody to have a perfect pronunciation. Nevertheless, I've heard many wrong pronunciations but these still came unexpected. An though, I mostly agree with your point, it most definitely changes the impression of the entire text that is given. It is the same with misspelling of words. And tbh, I think a philosophy professor should at least try to get the pronunciation right.
@robsutton3092
@robsutton3092 5 ай бұрын
I should not have assumed you were criticizing his understanding of the subject. You were just criticizing him for another form of ignorance. I have done the same thing. You’re right about misspellings, too, though it is easier to perform an automated spellcheck than a pronunciation-check. The mispronunciations in this video were likely due to the fact that he has never or not often heard some of these words and names spoken. The subject matter of philosophy, though underlying and applicable to literally everything, is not a common topic of discussion for most people. Perhaps that should change. As lovers of wisdom, we should be appreciative of attempts at discussing these issues even with mispronunciations.

Philosophical questions stem from the sort of questions that we can wonder about; we can think about producing something, about doing something or about what thinking itself or about nature. Carpenter thinks about producing or making a chair, engineer about something else, builder about building, etc. this isn't called philosophy but art or carft. We think about what to do and this is different from the thinking about making something( the latter has a product that is in the end of the thought, but the former has an mastered action at the end), such as taking care of our loved ones and this is economic philosophy( because we mainly have to earn money and spend it well. "Economic" in ancient Greek means "household economic"), and taking care of the civil society and this is political philosophy. All these kinds of thought have an ethical aspect to them, and are called moral philosophy. We also think about thinking itself in logic where we consider whether a concept is applicable ( predicable) to something or not, as dog is not applicable to Socrates( as we don't say, "Socates is a dog") but man is( as we say, "Socates is a man"). The signs of concepts, like noun and verb and everything in grammar are also included here. The last part studies nature and this can be studied in many ways. All these divisions of philosophy express the order in one way or the other. Natural philosophy the order of nature, logical philosophy order among concpetions and moral philosophy order among action as they stand to some good. Question can be resolved but it takes too much time and effort..

Snook, the progress is much better and growing rapidly. But my concern stays the same, youre reading on a pace that are way too fast. Before, youre using a safer vocabulary thus the connotations and pronounciation are fine. But on this its apparent, more to me because these type of videos, one like urs to help me focus while doing work. While the video is and content research are getting better, so is the words, but your fast pace sacrifice the pronounciations. Take your time and read the words from your heart bro. Love ur vids, keep up the great work.

A few geniuine tips for future videos: 1) Go a bit slower, to make sure you don’t stumble on difficult words (you’re talking fairly fast so I don’t think slowing down would make the videos feel sluggish), 2) Read through your script properly before recording so you’re really familiar with it, 3) When in doubt, look up how to pronounce certain words/names (for example ”antinatalist”, ”Sisyphus”, ”Nietzsche”). You’re tackling a lot of tricky words, so it’s understandable you’re not familiar with their pronounciations, just do a quick google before recording. Keep up the good work!

uh about the existence of existence question. I get constant nightmares about losing my consciousness through death and stuff, but regardless keep watching philosophy stuff anyway. And what calms me is something I acquired from trying to write books and read Nietzsche. Existence is one big beautiful book. You are the main character of your stage, sure we are tiny, but not according to our eyes. I have decided that at the end of the day trust in whoever or whatever this author is. It has already given us such a beautiful experience, whatever comes are way, I'm just going to have to trust them and play my roll like a pro. Edit: just realized I didn't really answer the question and made a mighty long post, sorry.

Nice iceberg, there is definitely something to ignorance is bliss. Existence haunts me at times and I’ve delved down every one of these ideas or questions. An outsider might look at me, aimlessly wondering and perhaps even torturing myself and then compare me to someone with a cognitive impairment who is just happy go lucky. Who has it better off mentally really? I’d never wish for my intellect to go away but sometimes it really is better just not knowing. I’m sure people much smarter than me might look at me the same way.

regarding the fermi paradox, I've always struggled to see it as a paradox at all. consider this hypothetical situation: you are placed at a random point in the yellowstone national park, and your friend may or may not be placed at random as well, but you're not told if he is or isn't. neither of you know if you're alone or if your friend is out there. whether he's part of the experiment or not, you're tasked with trying to find each other with minimal supplies. you could be on the face of one mountain looking across a valley to another mountain. even if your friend is on the face of that mountain, you may flail your arms or wave a blanket or whatever it might be, but the odds of you noticing him, him noticing you, or (much less) you both noticing each other, are abysmally low. you might. but before all odds, you could spend forever waving your arms out into the open without ever coming into contact with each other. I think that's less of a paradox and more of a lack of proper resources or positioning that would allow for contact at all.

If you stumble on a sentence, just stop and take a breath and read it again. You can edit out all the slip ups. And also, please take a moment to look up how to pronounce things if you're not sure. You say Nietzsche often enough to say it right. It's like NEE-chuh (emphasis on the first syllable.) It's distracting when you make this mistakes over and over. I just want to be able to listen to what you're saying without getting distracted because I love your content! You're doing a great job!

Watching this video is just a reminder, more specifically towards the idea of knowing less, having a simple, or accepting that there is no answer to "that question" (you have the freedom of choosing) may be more beneficial in the long run. But, At the same time I'm not going to lie, it's intriguing.

I like watching this and relate to it. I aprox. 4 years ago started to have thought about life and what I’m here for, my purpose. I got so deep into it I had anxiety of what was going to happen after this life. My most messed up thought was thinking if after Im dead will I ever see my family again. Will I get lost and never see my family again or get to feel the warmth of my parents? It’s so messed up. That day I remember I got up at 2 am and hugged my mom in bed and told her that I love here a lot. Sometimes overthinking doesn’t do much. Just creates a lot of anxiety. The present and the moment is what matters the most what happens after really doesn’t matter. We don’t know what really waits for us ahead.

Hey @snook , wanted to throw you some advice to help your channel grow, but you gotta overcome the following if you want to be taken with credence and respect. Ok so, as a viewer, I feel milked by what feels like low effort research and regurgitated scripts by another author that you just rip. I think this is because of your speech, it seems confused and makes it sound like you don't even understand the content you're even presenting, let alone fact checked it. I recommend writing your own script and read it over while you research the actual material, and look up words and concepts you cant pronounce or dont know. It's really hard to trust your content, and that's fine for entertainment, but it appears you're trying to come across as educational. Best of luck to you bro ❤

With quantum immortality... one way that one could theoretically get out of it is to intentionally s word themselves with a way that has a 100 percent lethality rate plus have a fool proof way to enact it without the possibility of anything happening to stop it. But if quantum immortality is in fact real doing so could potentially break time itself.

Damn its always that heavy existence question. I don't know why and I will never find out. Still I can't stop to (german expression) "break my head" over this question. There is a musician that writes poems in my language. Poetry helps me cope with this haha. Using words in a abstract way to think abstractly about abstract things. It won't ryme, maybe not even make sense in english but I feel like sharing this. It ends with something like this, and I'm paraphrasing: Nothing created the observer and called him "I". No matter how you break the equation, if you multiply, divide or square it, the answer to the equation always will remain 1.

Great video but I feel compelled to make some pedantic pronunciation corrections. Please bear in mind that this isn't criticism of the quality of the video, just a bit of guidance that, if I had made the video, I'd probably appreciate. Keep up the good work! :) Nietzsche: NEAT-sheh / shuh (some pronounce it NEAT-shee but I have been informed that this is also incorrect) Causal: CAW-zuhl / zal / sal (depending on dialect. as in cause and effect. Not 'casual' as in informal) Sisyphus: SIS-uh-fuss Deontology: BULL-crap Anthropic: An-THROP-ic

The existence of existence in and to itself is haunting and dreadful. It's absurd, it does not require meaning or goal to become less absurd, for the *is* itself is gratuitous. It's hard to explain, but existence itself is a prison. while the shackles and the cures are products of sentience.

I always gravitated towards nihilistic beliefs, as a kid. Around about 7 years of age i had a period of a few weeks where i would cry myself to sleep thinking about death. After that, i accepted it, and got numb to the idea. When i got older, around 14, i started becoming depressed. That's when i started getting into philosophy. I don't read much philosophy. I'm 24 now, and i havent finished a single book on the subject. I enjoy reading about ideas, but upon reading them, my mind often just trails away, exploring those thoughts, and eventually i end up with an explanation why whatever i read is wrong, flawed, or insufficient. Sometimes, i just don't like what i come up with, and decide to pretend i don't believe it. Then i discovered absurdism. The absurdism philosophy almost feels like an endpoint to me. I have gone down this branch of nihilism and i can actually see the bottom of the hole. I also identify very heavily with absurdism, since i pretty much came up with the same core philosophy before reading about it and being able to put a name to it. Before that, it was just "my" philosophy, but there's something so reassuring about not being the only one who thinks this way. Especially since i'm autistic, and often feel like people just don't understand me on a fundamental, just as i don't understand them. I'm almost relieved that this seems to be the end of my journey into academic philosophy, because there are a lot darker ideas than absurdism. Especially for people who think like me...

Im 21, im about to finish my third and final year studying philosophy and im doing my final dissertation on Camus' myth of sisyphus. I for a majority of my life have felt the same way. It was hard to drag myself out of the nihilism hole, it took years. But slowly through living my life I discovered the true "meaning" of the word: meaning. Philosophers often use the term to refer to the objective/intrinsic value that a thing has. This has its roots in Aristotelian Christian tradition, but I (for as long as I can remember) have always viewed meaning to be a completely subjective and non-objective quality. I.e its not real, just something we project onto the world. What I learned slowly, and what might in retrospect seem obvious to everyone is that meaning, value, purpose, these are all subjective things that must be lived out and experienced subjectivley. They cannot be found through empirical observation or the scientific method. My youthful years of existential anguish stemmed from a couple of things. Firstly, I was indoctrinated into Christianity and found a way out. My justification behind that shift was my search for the truth, or atleast true things. But beneath Nihilism no such truth exists so you are no closer to the truth in being a Christian as you are being an Atheist. Secondly, I felt that being Atheist gave me some kind of super power that allowed me to see the world as it is instead of through some fantasy, delusion or illusion. Thus, the existentialist notion of "make your own meaning" was to me the same as believeing in a religion because neither of these things truly exist in the real world. Throughout my academic journey and really my life thus far, I have learned that we are not "objective" creatures. We are intrinsically tied to our subjectivity, we are hardwired to experience things through our own special senses and minds. Furthermore, I learned that without these things consciousness would not be possible, feelings like happiness and joy could not occur. In light of that, I realized that meaning as we experience it and understand it is not an intrinsic property of a thing but is instead an experience we have of our own lives/experiences. In this manner there is a key difference between religious faith and subjective meaning. One is a truth claim about the objective world while the other is a subjective self-assessment about ones own experiences. In other words, subjective meaning ≠ religious belief and it is fully possible to adopt one and not the other so long as you understand that your experiences are not objective properties of the world. Given that the distinction can be made, my issues sort of dissolved because I realized I could live my life and view it as meaningful without commiting to any extra beliefs or doctrines. This I think is why Camus is so loved and adored by philosophy students and readers, because he acknowledges the things which make life meaningful or atleast feel meaningful (subjective meaning) and props them up as the replacement for the traditional definition of meaning (meaning in the objective sense). He achieves his goal of "living without appeal" because his philosophy is so light weight and easy to practice. He defends the everyday man who feels the existential angst but does not cave in to it and gives him philosophical comfort.
