BOSTON - A MAN I'LL NEVER BE (LYRICS)
• BOSTON-A MAN I'LL NEVE...
Lyrics
If I said what's on my mind
You'd turn and walk away
Disappearing way back in your dreams
It's so hard to be unkind
So easy just to say
That everything is just the way it seems
You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind, you see
A man I'll never be
If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
It's getting harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
A man I'll never be
I can't get any stronger
And I can't climb any higher
You'll never know just how hard I've tried
Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can't be satisfied
You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind, you see
A man I'll never be
If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
And it gets harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
A man I'll never be
Can't get any stronger
And I can't climb any higher
You'll never know just how hard I've tried
Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can't be satisfied
You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind, you still see
A man I'll never be
If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
And it gets harder every day for me
I can't keep hidin' this feeling

To me the song is about your significant other seeing you as more than you see yourself. She sees him as "the man I'll never be" because he doesn't feel like he's good enough for her.

It's about a man who's married to a woman who truly loves him. Her love is so deep that to a certain extent she ignores his faults and sees in him something that even he can't see in himself. And although he tries so hard to be what she sees in him, he knows he'll never be able to live up to her image of him. This breaks his heartt...

i got to see this live back in 1978 in Knoxville TN. It was festival seating and me and my best friend were on the front row. Brad walked down the edge of the front of the stage while singing this song and either high fived or shook hands with the fans in the front row. I was 22 years old and now i am now 68 years old and i still cherish that handshake from Brad, RIP BROTHER,

Bringing my son home two days after his birth from the hospital, I had a 5-minute drive. This song was next on the album that I had in my CD player. I played it. Meaning this is the first song my son heard outside of the womb 32 years ago. Never having told him that story, somehow, some way, he changed his middle name to Boston 4 years ago. And this song remains one of his favorite songs today :-) Love you videos! Boston rocks

Boston has a bunch of good songs, but to me this song is just the definition of Boston music. Great lyrics, masterful lead guitar, clockwork drumming and bass, with keyboards in the right places. Oh and who can forget the vocals. Signature style recognized right off. You know it's a Boston song. Hands down my favorite from them.

This is one of my favorite songs. It was an awesome experience when Tom and Brad did this "unplugged" when I saw them in 1995. The meaning is open to interpretation, but to me "this dream you see" is her perception of him through her lens of love. He will never be the man she sees because that would be impossible no matter how hard he tries. To me the intonation at the end changes so that it's OK that she sees "A Man I'll Never Be" - doesn't everyone that is truely in love perceive someone more than that person sees in themselves.

Brad Delp, the singer, was a troubled guy who had suffered depression since childhood. Though Scholz actually wrote the lyrics, I believe they applied pretty well to Brad. Possessed of an amazing voice and standing on colosseum stages, he might have seemed to be supremely confident and gifted, and that may be the man she visualized him as, while he was all too familiar with his own weaknesses and insecurity.

He is still doing it to this day as the last original member of the band they still tour and play concerts today. And that's why bands love it when they write a song that can be interpreted by the listener to fit their own life narrative. And it could be they are speaking of the fans and how fans build rock stars up to a level that would be hard to live up to. So many ways it could go. Great band!

Hey guys, I've loved Boston since they released their debut album when I was a kid (probably the greatest rock debut album ever, which has sold ~20 million copies). This song is from their 2'nd album, which was also very good. Brad Delp was one of the greatest male vocalists in the history of rock and a humble, genuinely nice guy, but he suffered from chronic depression and ended up committing suicide in 2007 with a note pinned to his shirt that said in French, "I am a lonely soul". I grew up in Brad Delp's hometown of Danvers, MA and my oldest brother graduated high school with him.

In some ways, the lyrics almost seem to be from the perspective of a rock star performing live onstage with fans who think he is practically Superman with the perfect rock star life watching them, and he wishes the fans could know in real life - he is nothing like what the fans think he is. Boston's debut album is off-the-charts greatness. And it was practically impossible to create a second album that could compare to their debut.

The combination of Brad Delp's vocal, and Tom Sholtz's guitar are the magic here. As a guitar player, my tastes always leaned towards the Les Paul, and bands with Les Paul players. Boston always sounded different, yet still a Les Paul. It turns out that while most other Les Paul rock guitar players had moved onto heavier humbuckers, Tom still had a P90 in the neck. It's not quite so harsh. It's incredibly expressive. It's a pickup from a clean 50's era that sounds INCREDIBLE dirty. Tom is also just as accomplished of a sound engineer. He has his whole "80's in a box" Rockman Guitar Ace amp. Mine is on it's way. Pay attention to a lot of the 80's hair metal / rock bands. Lots of them use a Rockman Guitar Ace. If you do that genre of music, you already use one of these.

Another possible interpretation: Scholz has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. While he wrote Boston's songs, he was an engineer at Polariod. MIT enrolls the smartest nerds, and teaches them that unless they out-work their competition, they ain't diddley. Then, they go to work for corporate America and get loaded with the hard jobs, as management tests to see just what will break this young hotshot. So maybe this song is Scholz's reaction to his third job-performance review -- another 6 months of 60-hour weeks, evaluated as "Usually meets expectations."

Brad Delp struggled with depression, ultimately ending his life. This song is full of the emotion of trying to express his depression, but receiving no understanding from the woman that he deeply loved. He's tried as hard as he could, to be the man that she wanted, but he just couldn't try any longer....
@stevegirard-voiceaudiopodcasts

It’s interesting how many interpretations are possible, right?! I’ve been listening to this song since ‘78, and I always thought that it was about a relationship where a woman wants to have the perfect man, but she has a normal guy who tries hard to be his best… but he feels the pressure of having to meet her somewhat unrealistic picture of what a man is… that’s why the song is melancholy - because he feels they both could be much better if she would just realize he simply can’t be perfect - no one can. It’s not that she sees him as he is - “somewhere in her eyes she sees” that perfect guy. But he’s also seeing more clearly in her eyes that she’s disappointed, and that’s what’s killing him: her dissatisfaction with the man he is. You notice that nowhere in the song is his evaluation of her qualities… he accepts everything about her except her lofty expectations.

He never felt adequate and could never find a true love. He felt hopeless in love and he killed himself. Truly a tragic character.

I’ve always taken it as it being expressed to a woman, but the beauty of good artistic song and poetry writing is that it could be interpreted as meant for many situations!

I have always thought this song was a suicide note written as a song about a man who’s fighting his inner demons, who feels he can never get it right. Who feels he can’t live up to everyone’s expectations of him. If you listen to live versions of this song there are lyrics that aren’t in the studio version talking about how he doesn’t want to play this game no more. And as we all know later in Brads life, he took his own life.

Yeah, this song pretty straightforward . It is about a guy in a relationship who runs into trouble because, he has to be who he is and not the man his partner wants him to be. He tries to make the changes she wants him to, but, in the end, he has to break things off because that isn’t the person he is comfortable being. He has to stay true to who he isa and he realizes that by the end of the song. He can only change himself so much and still be the person he wants to be.

No, in this case "you look up at me" is a metaphor. It's about love, and expectations, and the fact that we will never meet them.

Easily my favorite song by BOSTON when i grew up. Too me, i interpreted it to be a struggle to live up to expectations in a relationship.
