The Wolf HunterZ React to
Rush ~ Xanadu ~ Exit Stage Left [1981]
• Rush ~ Xanadu ~ Exit S...
"Xanadu" is a song by the Canadian rock band Rush from their 1977 album "A Farewell to Kings." It is approximately eleven minutes long, beginning with a five-minute-long instrumental section before transitioning to a narrative written by Neil Peart. This song is based on an unfinished poem called Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who started writing it while under the influence of drugs. Once the effects of the drugs wore off, he was unable to complete it.
In Coleridge's poem, Xanadu is the fictional name of the land where Khubla Khan ordered the dome to be built: "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree." Coleridge goes on to describe the dome as a "Miracle of rare device, a sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice." The notion of the "Man from Porlock" is a famous yet unsubstantiated tale offered by Coleridge himself to explain why his poem is unfinished.
The legend of Xanadu is related to a number of myths and legends going back to the prehistory of Asia, specifically that of Shamballa. There was a movement in the time of Coleridge to explore these legends, in doing so we are tapping into the universal consciousness, an ability that the members of Rush seem to be quite adept.
In Peart's lyrics, the narrator describes searching for a place called "Xanadu" that will grant him immortality. After succeeding in this quest, a thousand years pass, and the narrator is left "waiting for the world to end", describing himself as "a mad immortal man".
Although the song does not explicitly state where "Xanadu" is, references to Kubla Khan imply that it is a mythical place based on Shangdu, the historical summer capital of the Mongol Empire.
"Xanadu" is the first Rush song in which synthesizers are an integral part. Unlike the previous albums 2112 and Caress of Steel, "Xanadu" used both guitar and synthesizer effects.
The song also marks Rush's clear foray into program music, although previous albums had displayed some elements of this. Subsequent albums during the late 1970s and early 1980s would see the group explore program music more systematically.
"Xanadu" requires each band member to utilize an array of instruments to affect the performance. Alex Lifeson used a double-necked Gibson electric guitar (one twelve-string, the other six-string) as well as synthesizer pedals; Geddy Lee made use of a double-necked Rickenbacker 4080 Bass/Guitar, as well as extensive synthesizer arrangements (through both pedals and keyboards) in addition to singing; and Peart took on various percussion instruments (temple blocks, tubular bells, bell tree, glockenspiel, and wind chimes) in addition to his drum kit.
Geddy Lee - Double Neck Bass/12 String Guitar, Taurus Pedals, Keyboards/Synths, Vocals
Alex Lifeson - Double Neck 12 String/6 String Guitar, Taurus Pedals
Neil Peart - Drums, Percussion (temple blocks, tubular bells, bell tree, glockenspiel, and wind chimes)

@@sureimhappy funny you said that. My uncle has a country place no no no lol. My uncle gave me an old warped acoustic guitar. I spotted it up in a closet. But no internet to learn. We were too poor for lessons. Not even one or two to get me going. So it sat in my room, warped and untouched. I found out later, in my mid twenties, after my mother’s death, how it broke her heart not to be able to afford those lessons. She was writing a lawyer trying to get more child support. Well I bought an acoustic this year and I’m concentrating on KZfaq lessons. I’ll play something cohesive before I die. ❤️

I know right?! Who wants to be compared to the other two guys in the band... Both arguably two of the most influential in their field among musicians today... I mean, even Geddy gets overshadowed by Neil (the new guy, lol). Crazy musicianship, always raising the bar, and challenging each other so they became better musicians. True friendships with these three, over 45 years of music and they were still getting better... How was that possible... R40 was bittersweet, but was lucky enough to see them in three cities that tour ..sniff sniff.. Their comradery, musicianship and true silliness will be missed most by me. I mean who else roasts chickens or dries their clothes during a concert (so spinal tap of them, lol)?? Lol. Such a huge library of beautifully written songs... Lyrics are thought provoking and the music drives whatever emotion of the story they are telling. Almost every song gives eargasms... It's easier for me to say what songs I don't care for in their collection rather than listing out my favorites... And really only one I would pass on..

Seriously though - Time Machine's version of Working Man. This recording of Xanadu was done in 1981 when they were ~28 years old. It's great, but they only became better. Time Machine was tour they did in 2010-2011 and they had ditched their opening acts at that point and played 'Evening with Rush' style and Working Man is the last encore at the end of a 2 hr. 45 min. set. They were each about 57 years old at this point. Working Man was their very first single in 1974 (when they were 21) and they updated it for the tour and KILL it. The long epic of Xanadu is fun, but they also finally figured out the 4-5 minute song thing too. The Spirit of Radio or Freewill (Ooooo, the live version of Freewill also from Time Machine is stunning) are great examples of their ability to write shorter, radio friendly material while still destroying it. Hopefully this isn't the end of your Rush journey. 19 albums, 40 millions copies sold, first album in 1974, last studio album in 2012, last live album in 2015. Such a deep archive to explore!!!

I’ve seen them play this many times live. I went to 32 Rush concerts over the decades. I first saw them in 1980 on their Permanent Waves tour and never missed a tour after that. Xanadu, like La Villa Strangiato are two songs they always played. Seeing them play this song live was always huge. Geddy singing, shredding the bass while playing keyboards with his hands and feet’s is unbelievable. All good things must come to and end and there will be no more Rush tours. It makes me sad, but what makes me sadder is all of the young people discovering Rush for the first time on KZfaq and will never get to experience them live. That has to be the saddest part of all. Every Rush concert I went to was the best concerts I have ever seen. I was lucky to be coming up at the time that so many of these classic rock legends were around, but no other group played to the perfection that these three men did. Supreme attention to every detail of each song. Playing for up to three hours per night, Rush dropped having any opening acts because they wanted to give their fans a full show and it was marvelous. I saw many great bands open for them, like Primus, Mr. Big, Candle Box and Tommy Shaw, but after their 5 year break because of Neil’s family tragedy, they came back with Vapor Trails and that was the first concert they had no opening act for. Prior to that, they’d play for two full hours, but getting three hours of Rush was orgasmic. Neil’s drum solo was always the highlight of every show. It should be because half the audience were drummers, air drumming to every song.

When music was an.....experience. You should have seen them live. That's why Neil Peart was called "The Professor". Geddy and Alex were in a class all by themselves. As for me, I can truly say that I lived in a time of giants 😊😊😊

Just an FYI for you. Alex had a double necked 12 string over 6 string guitar. Geddy had a bass over a 12 string guitar. Due to the camera work, when Alex was doing his ending outro on the 6 string , Geddy was on his 12 string and using bass foot pedals.

Enjoyed that. As a lifelong Rush fan, I love seeing people experience them for the first time. Alex doesn’t get the credit he deserves as a monster guitar player, which happens when your band mates are the best rock drummer ever (RIP Professor) and one of the two or three best bass players in the world. You are in for an amazing journey as you go down the Rush and Tool worm holes. I look forward to watching it. As someone else mentioned, watch Working Man from the Time Machine tour, live.

What Eddie Van Helen was to the rock guitar in the late 70’s/early 80’s, Neil Peart was to rock drumming - a paradigm shift as to the possible. Pretty much the same with Rush as a 3 piece band, too. I saw them for the first time just about 10 days before this performance and that one was the same - just remarkable! How they can pull it off so perfectly defines explanation.

I read somewhere that someone asked Eddie Van Halen how it feels to be the best guitarist in rock, and Eddie answered; I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson.

@Shallex are you sure because it was from an actual magazine article/interview. You are saying the EVH is not capable of honoring other guitarists? come on, even Jimi stated that Terry Kath (of Chicago) was the greatest guitarist He has ever heard/seen.

I've seen this video at least 50 times and it never gets old. I really enjoy watching others react to this. To see the sense of amazement on their faces is proof enough that Rush took a back seat to nobody. It saddens me when I realize we will never see their brilliance again.

I saw RUSH while pressed "in the front row" against the stage in '86 when I was 19. I was 8 feet away from Geddy Lee. Watching him play bass, keyboards, and pedals, all the while maintaining lead vocals just blew me away. Not much made me tear up back then, but being in the presence of greatness just put me in a misty state of awe. The closest thing I can relate it to is watching Barry Sanders run the football. Sheer greatness.

Geddy, live on stage, plays bass, guitar, keyboard, pedal synthesizer. Alex plays guitar and also pedals that he can play bass lines with while geddy is playing keyboard. And, of course, Niel plays more percussion instruments than any 3 people should. They are something to behold live.

Being 3 guy's from Northern Ontario. Canadian but not recognized enough. We RUSH FANS are a loyal bunch. Also we know about the band and it's member's. Geddy Lee , the lead singer, base and piano or keyboards, Alex Lifeson lead guitar and Neil on they drums. Neil is the Lyricist and wrote most of the songs. Geddy's parents survived ww2 in concentration camps..Neil Peart passed away in January of this year of brain Cancer. He had a daughter and on her way to college in Ottawa, Canada she flipped her jeep and died, 10 months later his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. So he lost everything in 2 years. His name THE PROFFECER is what they call him. A person explained it as now that you've jumped down the Rush Rabbit Hole your in for a wild ride.. Awsome reactions. I also had many friend who played your style of music and i enjoy it. Ya i'm 50 but i was blessed to see Rush 4 times in my teenage years, Metallica when it was the original base player and they where probably 20 and i was 16 , they where still small and i saw them in a 1\4 filled small stadium in Vancouver B.C. Loved growing up in that time...saw lots of bands. Another great reaction. Thanks
