Nobody is better qualified to talk about music as he's seen it from every angle. Bob Geldof broke into the Beatles' hotel room aged 12. He saw Dylan and the Stones when he was 13. Radio Luxembourg sent him messages from the ether. He worked out why the great lyrics work ("and the best opening line"). He studied the stagecraft of a host of musicians and formed a band of his own. He felt the lure of "screaming stadium whores and sex on tap". He staged Live Aid. And he ended up a close friend of many of "the people at the top of pop's Mount Olympus". This extraordinary interview has revelations about what's required to be a rock star you may never have imagined. And he nominates some Greatest Records Ever Made.

David and Mark interview Bob Geldorf, Rock raconteur extraordinaire, Bob begins... Mark goes and makes a cup of tea, David pops out to Tesco’s both check back in, Bobs only getting started. Mark decides to clear up his attic, David has a quick shower. Both check back in, Bob is in still first gear so Mark texts David and suggests a quick pint. Both meet and decide to have a ploughmans in the beer garden to soak up the sun and take in the vibe. Both check back in, The Beatles stories keep them transfixed for awhile then David & Mark realise that another burst of sunshine in the beer garden appeals do a quick text and are back in the beer garden, Bob is now in cruise control. David decides he will now clear his own attic out and Mark pops over to assist. Both check back in, Bobs moved onto The Spice Girls so they decide to go back up the attic for a while. Bob is now is major cruise control. David and Mark consider taking a mini break in France but it’s still amber so settle back in their study’s and pop a question, Bob pauses, breathes in some oxygen and continues.. Classic Geldorf and David and Mark happily restrained 😎👌

I wasn't sure if I wanted to sit and listen to Bob Geldof for over an hour and gave it a few minutes. But once he got started, it was fascinating to hear a bit of his life like that. I've never really seen Bob as human. Just a punk rocker-turned-angel. I am, though, a decent Rats fan. Not extraordinary, but I like some of their stuff.

@@CuriousRose I agree, he has a good heart. I think the UK just got a little sick of the preaching. Saying that, at least he tried to make a difference. Look at how John Lennon was treated in his days campaigning for peace. Bob has a similar penchant for being extremely blunt on sensitive subjects which some can interpret as petty but fair play to him.

Awesome interview! I find myself often awed by Geldof. His music memories and how it all was part of making him who he is and how he lives his life. If only I could be as eloquent (minus one or two of the more frequently used swear words). And when asked if I could spend an hour with any living person who would that be, I always answer Bob Geldof. No doubt our political leanings would negate each other's but he certainly can make a person stop and re-evaluate their beliefs on so very many topics. Thank you for this marvelous hour plus of Sir Bob. Loved it!

There is no denying the enormous significance and emotional power of Band Aid and Live Aid. The Boomtown Rats would not not be playing ordinarily at a concert of major stars of the day but his performance of I Don't Like Mondays is astonishing. The song lyrics are controversial' of course, but the moment he sings ' the lesson today is how to die' where it takes on a wholly different meaning related to the famine in Ethiopia is one of the most moving I have witnessed in music. It is as if time stands still while he and the audience take in the magnitude of the moment and the sentiment. Great BBC camera work and playing by the band caps off an amazing performance which still gives chills to this day. The weather for much of the day was beautiful as well. The best day of his life indeed.

From 'The Complete Beatles Chronicle' by Mark Lewisohn. 7th November 1963 "Dublin Airport, Dublin, Eire and Adelphi Cinema, Middle Abbey St, Dublin, Eire The Beatles' only appearance in Ireland. On their arrival at Dublin Airport they were interviewed by reporter Frank Hall for the RTE (Radio Telefis Eireann) news-magazine television programme In Town, transmitted this same evening,7.55-8.00 pm. The Beatles' first feature-film A Hard Day's Night - though it was five months away from gaining that title - first took shape on this day, when screenwriter Alun Owen, appointed by the film's producer Walter Shenson at the group's suggestion, began a three-day observation of the Beatles and their increasingly chaotic lifestyle. He flew into Dublin with the group from London Airport and stayed with them up to and including their engagement at East Ham on the 9th".

YESSSSS! Thanks Sir Geldof. I'm very glad to hear that, according to him, Lewisohn hates the Craig Brown book. I can quite understand why Lewisohn would dislike it. I'll keep it on my Beatles book shelf (as it was a gift from a dear friend) but frankly it doesn't deserve a second read....ever. For a start, his miserable account of the WONDERFUL tours of John and Paul's childhood homes put my own nose out of joint. As for the rest of it, how can you manage to diminish and dullen the greatest story ever told? Brown made an effort to do just that. 4 out of 10 I'd give it....and I'm being generous because it's about The Beatles!

I saw Boomtown Rats play at Minneapolis' first notorious punk and new wave bar, Jay's Longhorn Saloon. Loved the set. First of my two standout memories of that show was at the windup to the song "Looking Out For Number One" where Bob is singing "I wanna be like, I wanna be like, I wanna be like..." and then the whole crowd shouted out the word "YOU!!" Bob looked so disappointed and disgusted with us, as well he should. I was gonna holler out "ME!" afterwards but I wasn't drunk enough. The second memory is Bob and Johnnie Fingers coming out to play a final encore of a song that hadn't been worked out with the band yet, and they proceeded to play "I Don't Like Mondays", maybe (I'd like to think) for the very first time live.

Here’s a controversial comment. I have got quite emotional in my old age and from being rather stoic as a young man, I’m now what is known as a “crier.” This was never more apparent when I heard about Paula Yates’ suicide. This seemed like a trigger which continued with John Peel, Amy Winehouse, George Best, Alex Higgins and, most recently, Peter Green. But I felt so terribly sorry for Paula. She was the first “celeb” who appeared to chase fame and yet one never really knew how or why she was famous. However, I saw her interviewed once and realised how funny, self deprecating and intelligent she was. Then we found out about her rather crappy childhood and Hughie. The way the media hounded her for going off with that fella from INXS was abhorrent and so was my own initial reaction. Maybe my tears were guilt but at least I learned my lesson. The media, sadly, never will. The fact that everyone who knew Paula never had a bad word to say about her, even Bob, says a lot. On a lighter note, I just remembered almost meeting Bob. I was informed he was in a restaurant and I discreetly hung around briefly. I say briefly but I should say a good hour. Suddenly, the doors opened and out comes the lovely Dolores O’Riordan. She was in a foul mood judging by her language which went something like “I f**king hate this f**king smoking ban. All I want is a f**king cigarette!” Stupidly, I shouted “The Queen of Limerick!” And she shouted back “Tell that to them in there!” The look on her face made it clear it wasn’t the best time to ask for an autograph. I never did see Bob but that made my day.

@@CuriousRose Again, I agree. As I mentioned in my own comment, I was terribly upset at Paula’s death. She had a terrible time with the media in the UK but as far as I could see, she was very misunderstood. Yes, she did some things I didn’t agree with but I didn’t know the true facts. Whatever, she didn’t deserve to be humiliated by people who were old enough to know better.

Interesting - but to claim that the Stones first album was first rate? It wasn't. Tired covers of American tunes that were already old fashioned in 1964. One original from Jagger/Richards - and it was terrible. The Beatles first was "Please Please Me". Pushing against industry norms they wrote 8 of the 14 tracks. And, the tracks the Beatles had written were far superior to the covers they were doing. Silly Bob.
