Good video. One thing I was wondering about was whether that scene with the blind kids was really a fantasy. While the scene itself is shot like a fantasy, we see the kids at the end attending Dickie's funeral.

Maybe it was a fantasy to Dickie because it was so obvious it was his good deed to cover up his bad deeds that it felt like a fantasy to divulge it. It's the same logic he imprints on Tony on how to reconcile doing evil things. So he did it all for real, but getting credit for it seems fake to him.

I don't see why Chase changed show canon like he did. He went from Johnny Boy (living in an upper floor apartment) coming home the same night the cops arrested him with nothing coming of it to Johnny Boy (living in a house) not even getting out on bail before being sentenced to a four year prison term. I get Chase wanted to establish a reason for the bond between Tony and Dickie (and anither reason for the rivalry between Dickie and Juniot) but it seemed a bit much to me. Also, Johnny had already taken over Satriales by 1967 in the movie. I understand memory can be a tricky thing but I doubt Tony's childhood memories would have been that jumbled.

@@johnmccarron8234 Luciano was integral through Operation Husky in helping the US against Italy in the war. The US ensured that the mafia thrived in Italy in place of fascism. Even then, Genovese aided the US against Italy in 1943 and only came back to Italy (initially) in fear of facing murder charges in the US. It is not a stretch to say that without the help of the US military, the mafia in southern Italy would not have survived.

Even if I don’t agree, you explain your points well. Really good analysis and I think you have a deep understanding of the motivations behind the show and film. My problem with the film was the execution of the ideas they were going for. None of the plot threads had enough time to be fully fleshed out like they deserved because of how much they attempted to show (probably stemming from Chase’s dislike of overly long films). So while we get a bit of everything, we never get enough to truly invest in anybody’s story. It felt like everyone got the bare bones of an arc, the bare bones of a character.

Sil was supposed to be about 5 years older than Tony. Kind of a bridge between John’s crew and his and Sil was someone who worked for Tony’s dad although he was still maybe 10 years younger than Paulie. The only time they messed with that in the show was when Ralph once said that Sil was in a junior crew with him, Jackie and Tony. That was the mistake timeline wise. Did Sil look like a guy in his early 20s in the movie??? Probably not but with premature hair loss guys can look older more quickly.

The movie may be far from perfect and I too have some criticisms but a lot of people missed the point that Tony was supposed to be an unreliable narrator and that plenty of things happened differently than he remembers. Like no shit Tony didn’t have the full picture and glamorized the stuff he saw. Every gangster wants to be seen as some Robin Hood godfather type when they’re really a bunch of selfish thieves. Lot of people expected Dickie, Johnny boy, and Junior to be super-human levels of badass and not just a bunch of regular flawed guys. Especially, Junior, who a lot of people expected to be some kind of gangbanger who took no shit like Johnny boy and not the grumpy petty little man he actually was. Lot of fans were expecting some comic book movie where they were kicking ass and taking names. The point was Tony was a lot more like AJ than he’d like to admit and that was a major theme in the OG series. Did people forget that? I would of loved to have seen Tony, Jackie, and Sil rob Feech’s card game but perhaps if they make another movie it will show Tony in his 20s/30s. Also I think the literal and figurative execution of Dickie should of been done better. Like give Junior more reasons than just “he laughed at me” to want to kill Dickie. I get it harkens back to Junior saying “if this were the old days there’d be no asking for permission”, but still give them more conflict and maybe have dickie do something that really crossed the line with Junior.

Junior had Dickie killed because Harold proved capable and had the connection to Frank Lucas. It was everything to do with business, not personal. Everything else is just to misdirect the attention of the viewer to not notice that Dickie was being set up. Just like in Season 1 Junior wanted to kill Tony for running things behind Junior’s back, NOT because of the gossip around Junior’s love life.

I liked the movie well enough, because I like the themes that it wishes to convey (and does convey, very well) But that's also my biggest issue in a way: it's just a feature-length reprise of what The Sopranos has been telling us for 86 episodes, only mashed into a smaller runtime thus robbing it of the subtlety that made a lot of The Sopranos so fun to pay attention to. So it's still good stuff, but it's good because it's the same thing over again (albeit this is, in a lot of ways, a point that both the show and the film emphasise).

Its a pretty bad movie. Not only because of fan expectations (seriosuly fan expectations seem to be one of the few considerations they had in mind; the movie is plagued with horrible and cringy fan-service); overall the performances and the dialogues are very poorly executed, as well as the characters development. Liotta's double role in this movie is the epitome of the unnecessary; doesn't help or add anything other than including a big Goodfellas star in order to certify the "mobbedness" of the movie. I dont mind how much political content and/or commentary David Chase is supposedly trying to put into the story (allegedly, because at this point i feel that he was so burned out with the whole project that he didn''t care anymore.), the delivery looks and feels like a very bad written collection of clichés/sketches about italian americans and the mafia. Doesn't work neither as a drama, a thriller, a comedy or a straight parody of itself. ITs a complete mess. I 've explained profusely in another comment why i think this is.

You bring some valid points and generally speaking from other videos of yours that i've seen i can gather that you are a kind guy of a very benevolent nature, who more often than not tries not to be very agressive or critize too much whenever you make an assesment of anything. And i can empathize with that. That being said, this movie is horrible no matter from which perspective you try to approach it. And i dont think this is gratuitous. I've read in several places that Chase has rejected time after time to make any more Sopranos-related shows or movies. Thats understandable cause the show is whole as it is, and adding anything new to it would only function as fan service but on the other hand it would be a BIG disservice to the show itself. And this has been made abundantly clear now. It is my understanding that Chase has been trying to make a movie about the Newark racial riots for a long time now. But apparently, many producers and investors would only give the Ok to the project if a great chunk of the movie featured a narrative revolving on the Sopranos, feeling that that would be the only way to make it profitable and marketeable to the fans. My personal take on this is that the whole thing is a trollish installment. Its an antic, a "fuck you" directed on the industry and on any fans yearning for more Sopranos contents. I cannot conceive that Chase, as brilliant, creative, subtle and genius that the is, wouldn't have created such a ridiculous, soulless, unartistic, depth-lacking film if not to demonstrate that even the notion of another Sopranos flick is completely absurd. I mean, just look at the ending of the Sopranos!! Its a total subversion of classic storytelling. Why would the author of such a masterpiece participate in its desecration. Chase is trolling everybody; thats the only way i can see this movie as a brilliant creation. The only purpose it can have for it to be considered good. This movie is literally a joke in itself. There's no other way of explaining David Chase taking such a humongous shit on his own work. Either that or he is completely demented.

I mean if you choose to front load the politics too much it can be annoying and preachy but there’s still tons of well made, blatantly political art out there (Parasite, Bojack Horseman, Hurt Locker, pretty much every modern Clint Eastwood film ect). The guy who played Junior had none of Dominic Chianese's charisma and Jon Bernthal was not impressive at all. And then there's Silvio.. I really hated how the guy seemed to be playing a cartoon character based on Silvio. I know that Stevie Van Zandt's Silvio is a bit of a caricature himself, but one would imagine that he developed those mannerisms over time. It seemed like Magaro was overdoing it wayyy too much and it almost ruined the movie for me. I can't emphasize how much I hated the way they portrayed Silvio. You missed the point about Tony talking about how his dads thing was dignified, tight knit, reliable, honorable. This is how most kids view their parents and grandparents when they get to be their parents age. Also Tony saw a completely different world as a kid, like all kids. As you get older, your knowledge about how the world actually works increases and with increased knowledge, becomes increased stress, burden and despair, you begin looking at your once bright and interesting world as disgusting and evil and the people around you as different, no morals, not honorable, like you remember about your parents era. You should have left that part out of your video, because you completely missed the point of what Tony saw, felt, and remembers as a kid and seeing his dad's thing operate.

I disagree that the acting overall was good. A lot of the characters seemed like they were playing satirized versions of their sopranos counterparts. None were more clear than uncle juniors character.

Outstanding video. Seems like everyone rushed to shit all over this film when it first came out and yes it’s not executed nearly as well as the series is and probably would’ve been better served had it been a mini series to flesh out everyone’s arcs more organically. But Even tho it’s information overload in some ways I still found it to be enjoyable and consistent with their future selves and exploring certain elements from characters we’d heard about but never seen.

I know, I'm late to the gabagool party, but it is what it is and that's that. This should have been a series. A whole season with built up with the riots in the middle. Yeah, I wouldn't use Michael Gandolfini till the middle. Because in the first part is just a little kid trying to understand what is happening around him. So we could have more shit about Dickie Moltisanti and Harrold doing business and being friendly, maybe buddies even, while in front of the other Dagos Dickie treats him differently. I like how you put focus on Dickie's pseudo progessive act. The story beats can be the same, but they need to be flashed out more. Why not having Dickie hunting down that crew, like mentioned in the show? (Not alone, he does it with Harrold for some reason, but people pretend he did it alone or something) And when the riots come, maybe the mobster could ally with Anthony Imperiale in some way. Mobster always pretend to be for order in the neighbourhood, and values and all that. Another Soprano channel had nice ideas how to include Sellman and Maurice into the riot storyline. The Riots should be at least two episodes. In the movie it's rushed. Just like the killing of Hollywood Dick Moltisanti and taking care of the body. Felt so out of place. Specially because the deaths connected to the real Riots are counted, let's say. Felt strange to have a dead mobster added on the fictional list, and nobody cares? No consequences? It's the mafia! Maybe Dickie could blame one member of Harrold's crew or something. The looks Hollywood Dick gave Harrold, maybe they could have a scene where he is openly racist to him or one of his guys. And Sil shouldn't be that established already. No need for him and Jackie to rob a card game with lil' Punk Tone at that point. Richie should be around, maybe giving Jackie shit after the ice cream truck stunt he pulled with Artie and Tone. Jackie shouldn't call Tone 'Joe Jerkoff'. That's more a Ralphie thing to do. And Carmella should be on Dickie's radar. They are related. I don't know. Better a show than a prequel movie that might ruin all chances to get another show.

One little note: Mothers Little Helper isn’t about Valium to get through the day but rather Adderall or amphetamines. I know it’s stupid to point that out but I think it matters because Valium is more used to drop out and amphetamines are more for “…to help them get through there busy day”…the lyrics do also say “…you can tranquilize your mind” but if you’ve ever taken adderall for an extended period of time then it does exactly that. But damn man once again you hit it out the park. I fuckin love your videos!!

You and I had very different interpretations of the scene in the principal's office. There are many ways a mother can show care and tenderness without getting into bed with and snuggling up to her son. Toxic mothers tend to romanticize their relationships with their sons, and while the incident may not have counted as molestation, I believe it would have warped their relationship. The boy's father was away. Would she have done it with Johnny there? Did she deny having even read the book because she knew the story would reveal her inappropriate behaviour? Or did she genuinely forget, because the action was meant to remedy her own loneliness? Either way, it would explain her and Tony's relationship, and Tony's attitudes toward sex and women, in-general. Even though it was a warm memory for Tony, I thought this was fucked.

Listen, let's all be honest and stop making excuses for David Chase, this movie sucked. If this movie came out on its own, with no series fan base behind it, it would have flopped and gone straight to being shown on You Tube for free. It was sold as a Sopranos prequel, made for the die hard fans of the series who remain fans despite the series ending years ago. That being said, prequel's typically lead up to the point where to original film or show begins, not 30 years prior. We got glimpses into Tony's young adulthood, but the movie focused more on the riots and the characters from this area of the plot that no one cares about. Considering it was made by the same people who made the Sopranos, it was boring, contained several obvious inaccuracies, and simply wasn't what it was advertised to be. It was a big let down.

I enjoyed this video but the main problem with this movie was pacing. It was really too jammed up in the last 30 mins. Give us more of the time of Tony and Dickie apart. Make it hard for us to live with too. It died on the vine.

I think a lot of your extrapolations are probably correct but my issue is just how much you have to extrapolate. Nothing is set up. We never see Dickie's mother being abused and it's not gestured at in any way, Dickie just says it, so him killing his father over that just seems odd because we don't feel that rage that he has at that moment. We don't really feel anything as far as the relationship between those two characters goes, and that's a problem throughout the film for me. Nothing is very fleshed out. Are people really this impulsive and hot-blooded in real life? I'm sure of it, but they don't make for compelling characters in a movie because we can't make sense of what they do, and I think that's important, even when we don't agree with their actions. In the end Dickie is just a hothead, who will kill or maim on a hair-trigger which would be fine for a more minor character but as our protagonist? Didn't make it for me. But, like I said, I think a lot of your analysis is good, particularly about what the movie is telling us RE: the racial attitudes of the people involved. Like the course correction everyone seems to take when history doesn't go their way. The monstrous views remain. Good stuff as always.

Acknowledging/analyzing the politics that are *in* a series/movie is one thing….but injecting one’s partisan rhetoric and severely-biased perspective to inaccurately analyze the material is a whole other thing. This Worm, aside from his unironic “orange man bad” regurgitation would legitimately be one of the best Sopranos channels. Too bad though he’s incapable of going without one video of basically labeling potentially half of his audience as “fahhhscists.” Tsk, tsk. When will the “morally and intellectually superior” ever learn. LoL, smh.

I don't think I've said a single word about Trump in any of my Sopranos videos. Don't get me wrong, his presidency was one of the most disgraceful chapters this country's played out in living memory, but I really haven't talked much about it on this channel. There was maybe a gag in my Joker video? You're either making things up, or your delusion is such that any criticism towards any aspect of your bubble is taken as an attack on the whole, so it's all just interchangeable.
