I had a pixie because with my curly hair, it’s just easier. I’ve been growing it out for 6 months and now I have wild curls sticking up all over, I get these two devil horns on the side of my head. And this why I go back to a pixie. I’m trying to persevere, but once summer humidity hits……

@@christywhite33 I’m a 3a/b and once it’s long like to my shoulders (but at the length if you stretch it out it’s to the middle of my back) I can manage it by just letting it be curly, but it’s soooooo hot and I hate wearing my hair up as I’ll get a migraine. It will be at least two years to get it to my shoulders since the bounce up of the curls I have to grow it so long. So I need to be patient. I’m not patient. When I read your comment to my daughter, she laughed and said I think you’re at the grandma stage! Ohhhh noooooo! LOL

The second woman didn't apply the wrong product. She mixed it properly the first time and applied it and then she went to apply a second box and mixed that incorrectly. She didn't use it, which is why she said she hopes her hair is saturated enough.

I put perms in my hair a few times by myself. No colourings, and I could sleep for 2 weeks. I have very thick hair long shoulder length hair and it didn’t damage my hair.I could get up in the AM and spray slightly and go I loved it ! ! I always got 3 boxes so I always followed directions carefully and could drench good

As a retired hairstylist it is so interesting that these people have NO idea how much knowledge is actually involved in executing a perm properly. From size of sections to proper rod size and what happens to the bonds of your hair. We went to school for a reason. Every time someone figures they can do any chemical process at home it marginalizes the time we spent learning.

Not entirely true, I am a retired RN, just because I can’t teach a person how to properly change their dressings at home doesn’t make my knowledge invalid. But the absolute goofiness of trying to use these products with no knowledge makes me think they think it is magic, not science. In the seventies I would say half of all people who got perms did them at home . But everyone was doing them so more knowledge was shared.

Im not a hairdresser and I would never dare to try this at home. This is such a scary procedure and my respect go for the hairdressers they can study and do this. I destroyed my hair with home bleaching two years ago ever since I let my hair being natural. Finally my virgin hair grew back and no way I will ever damage it again. I save up instead and visit a hair salon.

Okay, as a curly haired girl, let me tell you - we do not roll out of bed with our hair looking fabulous. Curls are work. I wake up looking like a frizzed out mess most days AND my curls have their own agenda. Today my hair was super curly and cute. Yesterday? Yeah. Yesterday not so much. Every day is a surprise even if I do everything the same!!

I did it once. That's all I needed. They can't do my profession without training. I don't expect to know how to do theirs. A big stuff up in my profession can result in a loss of a life.

In my mid teens, I begged my mom to perm my hair. She agreed, and my hair came out fine. This is almost certainly because my mother was, in fact, a professional. I still came out with PoodlePerm syndrome, and my new nickname in high school was Cabbage Patch. And now, I have dated myself LOL.

My nose will always remember the perm stench from 30 years ago. Age and blood pressure medication have finally given me the curls that all that stinky chemical exposure couldn't quite achieve.

Your BP medication helps to make your hair wavy/curly? I’ve definitely noticed that menopause has made my hair wavier, but didn’t know about BP meds. Thankfully don’t need those yet. I’d love to hear more about your experience.

People don't read instructions anymore. They think it's magic. I remember back in the day (80s 🤫) when I was getting a perm, the stylist would towel dry each of the curlers after rinsing the perm solution so the water wouldn't dilute the neutralizer. THAT was very important.

Video idea: I know you're in the US currently (well at least posting FL videos recently.) If youre still in the US id love for you to go to Sally beauty since youve said before they dont have them where you live overseas. Id like to hear your honest opinion on the place. Is what they sell good, what should we avoid, etc.

We did our own perms back in the late 80s and early 90s. The key is to use the correct size rollers, papers, and a high quality box perm which could be purchased at a beauty supply store, and reading carefully and following the directions and warnings. It wasn't hard once you knew how to roll the hair and choose correct size rollers.

I remember my mom home perming my hair back in the 80s. Rollers were so tight, and the solution would be dripping. I would always come out looking like orphan Annie.🤦‍♀️

Way back in the 50s, when I was in kindergarten and all through grade school, my mom would take me and have my hair permed constantly. The smell was horrible, I hated it, hated it. I would have these ugly little curls in my hair and I would be so embarrassed and dreaded to go to school. I don’t know why my mom hated my straight hair. Her and my grandma were always berating my hair. To this day my hair is as straight as a pin and it’s staying that way.

Well, those of us with stringy oily hair, perms are great. And yes sometimes frizzy hair looks much better than flat stringy hair and perfect for the beach. Imo

Yes! Though I never got the frizzy stuff but my perms were heaven! No fuss, no brush, didn’t have to wash every day, twice a day in summer. I’ve naturally fine, straight, oily hair. Maybe naturally curly hair is a different animal. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My mother and grandmother would perm each others hair at home every year since the early 70s, I'll never forget that awful smell. They had that very typical super short hair, short curl perm look that was popular in the 70s and 80s. They looked like poodles. Which was ironic, since they had 20 poodles. I couldn't tell them apart half the time.

Oh boy, do I remember perms. The one and only that I had, I asked for waves and ended up with the tightest curls you can get. It looked SOOOO bad. So, my teenage self thought "why not wash this out?" and ended up with a head full of frizz instead. This led to my era of pixie cuts

No one's had a worse perm experience than me lol 30 yrs ago, done at a salon (not their fault) i had an allergic reaction that night. My whole body went numb, i couldnt talk, had trouble walking, couldnt even dress myself to go to emerge. It wore off on the drive there, we lived 30 min away. I was 15, it was so freaky!

Not quite as bad but went to a salon about 35 years ago. Permed my long hair and fringe (bangs). Sat me in chairs and I waited and waited until my face started to burn with all the perm solution running down it. Tried to get some attention but stylist was busy with someone else. Then I realised she had forgotten about me. She was obviously nervous. My hair was awful … I cried, went home and washed it gently because it still stank of the lotion. My hair turned to jelly and started coming out AND my skin was peeling off too. I went back to the salon the next day and they said it was my fault that I should’ve not wet it for 48 hours… never actually told me that before and only agreed to refund half the cost. Not even an apology! P.S. My hair was virgin, had never had any colour or perm before and have never ever been tempted to do it again.

That's terrifying! My worst was getting a spiral perm on my long to my butt hair. The stylist was more interested in socializing with everyone than doing my hair. It took forever for him to get it rolled. The perm solution didn't get to all the hair because he was rushing. When it was time to rinse - he didn't even help lean my head back, so it just thunked down from the weight. Then he did the neutralizer over the sink. After the final rinse my must have weighed 30 pounds, and he didn't help me sit up. And I had been leaning back for nearly an hour. When I went back a couple days later because of all the straight pieces - they wouldn't fix it. I spend $80 - which was a fortune my 80's teenage self and it was a horrible perm and horrible experience. I wound up cutting my hair off to paige boy/bob a couple of months later. After decades of bad haircuts, perms, coloring from salons - I do my own now (not perms though!) Stylists just refuse to listen to how my hair works and what I want. If I'm gonna have a bad cut or average dye job - at least I didn't waste money and all that time. 10-15 minutes to cut my hair (and then a week of tweeking as it settles in), an hour to dye it. Cost is under $15. And I get compliments. I do miss the shampoos though.

@@jeandiatasmith4512 I mostly do my own now as well I've had some other bad experiences. One of them including a First Choice visit where the lady doing my hair should have called in sick. She had been hit by a car and was covered in bandages and did not listen at all to what I wanted. She didn't even brush or comb my hair before cutting it, just pulled pieces straight out and snipped without any thought. I told her not to touch my bangs and then a few minutes later she grabbed my bangs and said "oh you'll like this" and she did one diagonal chop. I should have walked out. When I got home and brushed my hair and straightened it everything was so uneven. My hair is naturally pretty curly so when I cut it myself I can cover up the mistakes. Lol

I remember everyone perming their hair in the 80's,that was the look back then. Curls are a lot of work and they go flat sleeping on them and your hair sticks up in places when you wake up.takes products and patience to get it back to decent looking curls.

As someone with naturally 2c/3a curls, i can confirm it takes at least 1.5 hours every morning to simply refresh my hair, makeup takes 20. I usually wear a bun just to save time.

My mother was a beautician from Japan. When I was little, I had long wavy hair. However, my mother got tired of brushing it out all the time so she gave me a pixie cut and permed my hair. God it was awful. In my 20's I used to perm my long hair. It took almost all day to roll my hair up and go through the process. I'm 63 now and my hair goes down to my waist. Haven't permed it in forever. I can braid it, wear it in a bun, a ponytail - works for me.

It looked to me that she used the first box correctly but she accidentally mixed the neutralizer in with the second box so she couldn’t use that box at all and she just didn’t have enough.

I have been getting a spiral perm for summer once a year for thirty years. I go to a salon and they use regular perm rods and piggyback technique. I love it. But no way can i do this myself. ❤❤❤ Much love to you hair budda. I am using my husband 's phone writing from Detroit. My husband has Belgian ancestry. ❤ Belgium.

For the last video... The box comes with ingredients A B and C. You're supposed to mix A and B, apply it to the hair then rinse it out and apply C. She mixed A and C, ruining all three ingredients.

I did a home perm once....I looked like a poodle. I immediately washed it out. Never again. I have big curly waves naturally if my hair isn't too long. I don't know why I thought I would end up with that look on longer hair.

Hair Budda, the 2nd girl mixed the first box correctly. But when she mixed the 2nd box because she needed more solution, she mixed it wrong. So she only has one box of perm and neutralizer to work with.

Dry hair and using spongy rollers, too big, without paper, that will absorb all the product, never gets rinsed off completely before applying the neutralizer... Well, the last perm I gave myself was in 1996, it was not a fail and had remained beautiful for a very long time! But like any chemical products, it also caused some split ends and breakage on my fine hair and it took a long time and haircuts before it was back to normal! Was worth it, but never again! Thanks Hair Buddha!

My Mom started perming my hair when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Home perms were a big thing in the '50's and she was careful and successful. Still, I had to put my hair up in rollers or pincurls, starting with wet hair and Dippity Do. I slept on it, hoping that it would dry overnight. Hairdryers were bonnet style, not blow dryers. We didn't have one. Once dry and rollers out, you had to brush and brush and brush until you tamed it. Forget getting up and going with no prep time. However, I was raised hearing the phrase "What price beauty?" A woman did whatever she had to do to get her hair to look "right". I was indoctrinated from a very early age. Thank goodness, I am over that now

As a natural curly girl 57 years old I have never in my life understood why anyone would try to get curly hair. The only professional perm I ever got broke off all my hair because I had bleached hair. The hairdresser didn't seem to care and went ahead and did it anyway. I had no idea it was a very bad idea. I was pregnant and so tired of doing my 80s hairstyle, I thought a curly perm was the solution LOL

Natural curl girl here. There’s a reason I dyson my hair smooth every time I shower. Because I too have a dream to have low maintenance hair. If you’re looking for low maintenance, curly is not the way to go.

I love this channel, especially that you explain things without belittling people. I've been coloring my own hair for over 20 years and I'm well aware that it's ... just aight. As a curly haired girlie I can confirm…we do no just “wake up” like this. It takes A LOT of work to get our curls defined and bouncy but without frizz. Frizz is a curly girlie’s KRYPTONITE!!!

I wonder if any of these folks have tried doing the "curl overnight" thing... I've seen lots of people come out with amazing morning curls by using soft curlers/rollers (one gal swore by fabric ties, but just did the ends) to roll up their hair when it's wet and let it dry while they slept. They take the curlers/rollers/ties out in the morning and have consistently lovely results.

Finally! Something I’ve actually tried. A few years ago, I was experiencing some stress-related hair loss and decided to “perm my hair straight.” Virgin hair, but that absolutely CAN be (and was!!!) destroyed by home perming products. I decided to leave it in three times longer than recommended thinking that would make it “stick.” Then one side looked fuller than the other and I got another box and did the same thing… I ended up burning my hair, burning my scalp and burning my neck. I was flaking all over the place and my hair that was left on my head looked like I stuck my finger in a socket. Yes, I did it wrong. But these products are not safe, in my opinion. My hair has never been the same. Don’t do it, ladies（or gents)!!!

***I'm 45 yrs old. I've had a plethora of hair styles including perms and straight. There was way more work everyday when my hair was permed. Just my experience.***

Cant stop laughing when he said, in regard to the lady saying "What have i got to lose" "A lot of hair, talk to the first girl" love this guy My first ever perm made my hair look like an explosion in a mattress factory, it was hideous, i had one more try after, then i have never done it since, that was over 42 years ago, if you are going to have a perm, trust me, go to the hair dressers.

I'm mixed and when i was young, maybe around 4 or 5, everyone kept telling my mom to relax me and my sisters hair. My hair before was a bit wavy but after it became more kinky curly. She never taught us how to take care of our hair so around 5th grade she took us to a beauty school and had our hair chopped off. Keep in mind my hair was to the middle of my back. After that I struggle to retain any kind of length. Everytime my hair would grow past my shoulders I'd get a trim and they'd always have to cut it jaw length. I pretty much gave up on my hair in my late teens. My older sister was way luckier than me, her hair is gorgeous and she has no problem retaining her length.

My aunt was a hairdresser and did all the old ladies’ hair from around the neighborhood. Once in a while I would go there for a cut as well. She went to hairdresser school but it was vastly outdated and it showed in the “coupe”. She was great for the older ladies their perms and cut but with my very flat (sleak? Don’t know the term, “sluik haar”) but even trimming the ends was… not her forté 🙈 but me not having to torture myself (due to my chronic illnesses that pose is utter torture). So each time I didn’t have to experience that at a washing bassin it was worth it so I was grateful every time she wanted to do it. But the papers of the perms, when this was explained that those are necessary, it was pure nostalgia to those simpler times not ruined by the later… uhm… “stuff” in life. Thanks for giving me back some neutral memories to thin out the bad ones. We always tend to forget the positive memories more than the negative ones. I get it’s because they hurt and therefore “cut” deeper but still, never too much positive memories ❤ Sorry if this was too off topic but I felt like it was worth mentioning My hair has a very stubborn “memory” aspect, what I mean is that I just need to wrap, braid or roll it up while wet and if I want it to last until the next wash cycle, I leave it like that overnight and it will soften a bit each day but it will stay. But knowing how many older ladies have never done perms until their old age (with thinned out hair mostly), I do wonder, if I do reach such an age, whether I will want to start doing my hair in perms (I assume my hair will start to loose that resilience to keep that “pattern” I let it dry in because every aspect of us gets older so of course, hair as well) so I’ll still watch these, I’ll never get too educated ❤

I’m 59, my paternal grandmother permed my hair when I was 8 without my mothers permission, Mum was horrified! So was I, took ages for it to grow out & that perm smell is unforgettable!

I think I'd either just take the heat damage from tongs, or go to the hairdresser. Not that I want to perm my hair. Well no, I've considered getting my hair permanently straightened, but my hair always winds up looking strange when I try to curl it. Plus my hair hates holding curls. Lady with dark hair didn't use the the second box at all because she mixed the wrong ingredients so had to discard them.

I got a perm around 15 years ago from someone who had been perming their own hair, their sister's and mom's hair for years. It turned out great, I was so happy and it lasted probably a year (granted it grew out with straight roots, so I would put my hair in a ponytail or curly bun toward the end with my inches of straight hair at the top and then curls all of a sudden). With the perm, it actually was a LOT faster and easier to do my hair in the morning, but on wash day, which was only 1 time a week with the perm, it took a LONG time getting my hair done. I would use gel while it was wet and sprunch it in my hands, and use a diffuser on my hairdryer. It took a long time to dry, too. I would do that on Saturdays and have awesome hair all week. Secretly, I want to get a perm again. Now, I color my hair due to going gray, so it would still be safe, but my stylist doesn't do perms at all, and I don't think the person that did mine does hair anymore. My hair doesn't like to cooperate in its natural state, so adding volume and "character" helps my hair do something other than just hang there, LOL.

I have such trauma when it comes to perms. My mom decided when I was 6 years old to get me a perm because I was a flower girl in a wedding & my hair was straight as a board and if curled, the curl would fall out in an hour. She took me to a beauty school to get it done. My hair was to my waist. Ok, all the rods were in place, they slathered Vaseline all around my face, stuck cotton to it and then started to pour that horrible smelling stuff on my hair. Next thing I know, I feel like I’m on fire, I’m barfing, screaming, crying, etc. the solution went right through the cotton and was streaming in my face, eyes & mouth. They actually carried me out the back and used a garden hose to wash all that stuff off my head & body, stripped all my clothes off and continued to hose me down until the fire truck arrived. That’s all I remember of the ordeal but even the slightest whiff of that smell will send me in a dry heaving fit.

I hated doing fake perms in school, and I hated doing real perms even more! Then when going to test, I was the last year they made a perm test part of the test. Thankfully in America they replaced perm testing with needing to do a full acrylic nail which I can do blindfolded. Perms just should not exist until they make them better on hair. I'll never try a perm product unless it's new and says it's usable on bleached white blonde hair with no damage whatsoever. Then maybe I'd test it on a few extension pieces, and then if it doesn't destroy the hair or cause frizz, then they can add perms back to salons. Until then, perms need to go away.

Curly-haired girl here - it takes me a whole hour just to distribute products and make sure my curls are defined, then another hour to diffuse and style .... having curly hair is no joke! And humidity - curls' worst enemy!!

My last perm was in ‘89, so I’m surprised this is still a thing! 2 questions for anyone who knows: 1.) why is it better to start with wet hair? Wouldn’t that make your hair absorb less product? 2.) Is the Body Wave still around too? I had some BAD ones.. like 30+ years ago 😂

I think k she made the first bottle up correctly, used it on her hair then decided she needed second bottle. Messed the mixing of second bottle up so never used it at all

The way she thinks that people with curls do no work for our hair actually made me chuckle a bit. I'm literally sitting here with two headscarves on after setting my hair in a style for work in the morning. I set my hair once every few days in a way that is manageable and won't need changing and make sure to sleep with my headscarves to keep it that way every day. I use texturizer on my hair every few months to control it a bit as well or it gets out of hand and destroys combs.

I have to say that at age 61 I have never colored, had hilites or lowlites done to my hair. I am a dark redhead with silver/salt and pepper at the temples mostly. I go for a small rod perm every 5 months or so at a nearby salon. My hair grows FAST and is too straight for my liking. My perm day is one of my best days but...I always have the same lady doing my perm and we have worked together to do the best for my hair. I would never do this myself at home and...bonus! supporting small business in my community.

I usually have no sympathy for such people who do ridiculous things to their hair. But at least the first lady researched and knew the risks. She was honest and served as a great example and advocate of what not to do.

The second woman didn’t mix the first box incorrectly, it was the second box. She wasn’t able to saturate her curls all the way and that is why it didn’t work.
