Hi Brad!!! I’ve been a hairdresser for 37 years now. Perms are my favorite things to do. I’m an older hairdresser with older clients and I think I do a killer perm!!! This new hair coloring stuff scares the crud out of me. Rainbow, balayage, things like that. I do great highlights, but the fancy schmancy stuff, I’ve never learned or had the opportunity to try. I’m having trouble picturing rainbow hair on my 80 year olds!😂😂😂 I greatly admire you and your skills! I’m very happy where I’m at as far as my clientele goes, but I miss my younger days, when I too enjoyed all the fancy popular new concepts. You are very right when you said to find someone who knows what they are doing in regards to perms. You can always redo, or color over color that isn’t right. Can’t reperm hair that came out wrong. Unless it simply didn’t take, and then you still need to be very cautious. I enjoy watching your videos. You are always very respectful of the people you are watching. So that’s why my “beach wave perm” ended up terrible. The lady handed me a brush and hair dryer without a diffuser and told me to dry my hair myself. Then when I asked why my hair didn’t look like I expected when I was done and she just said “because you blow dried it wrong” I basically paid for her to make my hair extra frizzy for a few weeks.

Heh, from about the age of 10-12, I was my grandmas go-to-person to do her home perm. She had the classic grandma short fluff, which she rolled and dried every time she washed it. I got quite good with those rods over the years, and the big rollers too. It was a real nice time to spend with her, and she always praised me when I got it how she wanted it. Sure miss her, it'll be two years since she passed this summer. She would have turned 99 a couple of days ago.

I honestly got the vibe from the first girl that she knew exactly what she wanted with the ramen noodle hair, so apart from almost getting perm fluid in her eyes it wasn't that bad.

My uncle was a hairdresser at a very high end salon and needed models, so he gave my mum a perm and they did a fashion photo shoot. She absolutely ROCKED IT, she kept it for years!

I have had two perms in my life. The first one was PERFECT and the lady that did mine was known as the perm queen. The second one I got done at a really expensive salon and the lady BRUSHED MY PERM AND I WAS SO SCARED TO SAY ANYTHING BUT SHE WAS LITERALLY RIPPING THROUGH MY HAIR. I bawled right after the appointment and ended up having to get a pixie cut bc my hair was literally just frizz. All in all, if you decide to get a perm just call them and ask what their procedure is and please say something if they dare try to brush or comb your hair.

I've went to the salon 2 diff times to get perms to achieve those Ramen noodles curls (phone cord curls I called them, damn I'm old), and like I never even got close to those Ps I hear that girl when she says "if you know, you know" about the smell lol. if you've ever smelled hair glue or eyelash glue - combine them together, and that's the way perm solution smells. Gag.🤢

Oh my god- the first girl with the long blonde hair had the prettiest hair ever!!! I'm in hair dressing school right now and it made me absolutely want to cry for her!! That women who did her hair is clearly still stuck in the 80's, she may have been able to salvage it if she diffused the hair as you said, but using that small of a rod, just omg. I have no words.

I have done a LOT of perms in my life. We often rinsed spiral perms with the client laying forward as it was extremely uncomfortable (or even painful) for them to lay back on the rods. It also allows for the rods near the neck to be rinsed well.

Half of the videos I’ve watched here aren’t even things I’ve wanted to do to my hair but I’ve high key learned so much from your videos. You’re a superhero lol

My mom was a hairdresser when she was in her 20s but hadn't practiced since then (she was about 45 when this occurred). Being short on funds, I asked her to freshen up my spiral perm and trim my layers. I should have known something was wrong when I saw the small rollers she was using. When she was done and I saw my hair I just started crying. I looked like a poodle. The layers were......I don't even know how to best describe it......I had wings about 3" from my scalp then just blunt horizontal rows all the way down. I went to a professional in hopes of some sort of repair. After explaining what happened the hairdresser asked me "does your mom hate you?" 🤣😂🤣😂

Hi Brad. The way she did that ramen noodle perm was taught 30 years ago as a spiral perm. They use that size rods because the curls "falls out" to quickly. Back in the day each stylist had their own rod favorite but if you walked in for a "spiral" perm that is how it qas rapped and that look is what you got.

You should do professional perm vs box perm on one of those hair mannequins
