Pentatonix original LOVE AGAIN is made similar to this and has some awesome beats. It was written by Kevin (the beatboxer) and Avi (the bass). I think you'll really enjoy it. As for this Daft Punk video, it was recorded in a closet in Avi's apartment for a cost of $400. It also won them their first (of 3) grammies!

They’re winners of the NBC show “The Sing-Off”. That show is not on anymore, but it was like the acapella version of “The Voice”. A competition show for acapella groups. If you like acapella you should check out clips from that show. Pentatonix have made it big in the music industry and mainstream music since winning. It’s their precision and unique remixing, and all from the mouth, that makes them so good.

Verbal Droppings And I’m sure you appreciate the thick bass too. That was a big compliment they got from the judges on the show. Saying it’s hard to find someone who can create that heavy amount of low end, which is usually what you need for mainstream music, and very happy they have someone in the group that can give that to the sound.

Evan Reese that bass (Avi Kaplan)left the group (amicably) in 2017. The pace was difficult for him, and he missed his family. The new bass is Matt Sallee. He’s great also. Different, but still awesome. And just a really great guy! I’ve seen them twice in concert so far!!

@@drieuxkoeppel8152 I can't wait for their next album release featuring Matt. He has a great voice and works well with the group. Maybe I've missed a video that shows how low he's able to go. That's something I adore, how low a bass can go. Not sure why. But for certain one of my favorite pieces of a capella is Home Free's cover of Ring of Fire ft Avi.

As I recall, they said they recorded the audio in a closet and the video in a kitchen. This earned them their first Grammy for "BEST ARRANGEMENT, INSTRUMENTAL OR A CAPPELLA" in 2013. Their "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is really fun. Even better than the Tetris version.

They tried to train out Kristie's side mouth singing, but I always thought it was one of her best signatures. Kevin, the beat boxer, and Avi Kaplin their bass have both returned to doing solo work more. Both are very fun to watch, but PTX as a group were superstars.

Modern acapella has a bass voice (in this, it’s PTX’s original bass, Avi Kaplan-the bass is now Matt Sallee!) a baritone (Scott Hoying) a female voice (Kirstin Maldonado) ; a tenor (Mitch Grassi) and a beat boxer (Kevin Olusola). Kevin is also a master cellist. Pentatonix found him on KZfaq. He’s pioneered “Cello beatboxing”. He also is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and is an interpreter. And he was married last week! This video is from 2013. They made the video on a shoestring! They’ve grown exponentially since they won “The Sing-Off” In 2011. Sold-out tours, three Grammys (including for this arrangement!) and millions of albums later...Avi left in 2017. It was an amicable parting. The pace they keep is INTENSE. They explained in an interview any piece they do takes many, many more hours of prep time than a band that has musical accompaniment. They work many hours a day, with a grueling touring schedule-not to mention recording. PLUS Scott and Mitch also have their own duo: “SuperFruit”. AND Scott manages a female acapella group “Citizen Queen” (check them out. Their beat boxer is FIERCE!). Busy, talented, personable folks. And yes. I’m an PENTAHOLIC!!

You commented that "A capella is such an art form." PTX takes it to the highest level - 3 grammies for three different genres (including their "Daft Punk" mashup.) They have the verbal chops to be at the highest possible level of a capella. Given they only bring 5 people to the stage, what they do is phenomenal.

This is one of my favorite PTX vids, and if you like a cappella and beat boxing you need to check out Home Free. They are billed as a "country" a cappella group but they can make anything sound amazing. One of my favs of theirs to suggest to first time viewers is their "Butts Remix" just because of the humor, and its a mash-up of country, rock, hip hop/rap and R&B. Home Free will hit you with a different deep emotion with each song, whether its sad, poignent, or hysterically fun. Their bass singer has a more than 5 octave range, low enough to blow sound systems in concert (he even helped Avi, the PTX bass, extend his low range) and their beatboxer has been called a freak of nature. (there are even vids of Adam Rupp just doing beatboxing alone) Home Free's harmonies are arguably better than PTX...to the point where, even though the two groups have different styles, there is a lot of back and forth by fans as to which group is better. Might I suggest trying any of the following (each song, whether cover or one of their originals will feature a different talent from each of the guys). Impeccable harmonies: "Seven Bridges Road", "Auld Lang Syne", "Helplessly Hoping", "How Great Thou Art". For variety "End of the Road ", "Thinking Out Loud/Lets Get It On", "Mayday", "Man of Constant Sorrow" , for fun " Love Train", "Hillbilly Bone", "Country Fried Pop Medley" "The Butts Remix" ...the list is endless and amazing.

Correct on every part of his background except one. Kevin attended Yale, not Harvard. Since he spent several years studying music in China, one of the languages he speaks (almost flawlessly) is Mandarin Chinese. Back in 2012, they visited China's version of The Sing-Off and Kevin surprised them with his Chinese. To see it, search KZfaq for Pentatonix China or also their Taiwan interview.

Listen to Hallelujah by Pentatonix, BUT just letting you know, you reacted to a previous member of Pentatonix who is actually in this video as well as Hallelujah, by the name of Avi Kaplan, and the song by him you reacted to was "Change on the rise"

It does seem like it’s such a fun group so I don’t get why the second beatboxer left, Avi

Avi was not the “second beatboxer”. Avriel Kaplan was the bass for the group, and anyone who knows anything about acapella knows that the bass is the anchor of the group. Avi was definitely that but far more. Not only was he a superlative bass, he also augmented Kevin on the beat, but could also sing anywhere in his whole range which is huge spanning several octaves. He is also a classically trained singer, and also wrote for the group. When he finally left most fans could see that, due to the nature of the group, he was being criminally under-utilised, just being relegated to the bass line. That on its own wasn’t the deal breaker for him, but he was also finding it more and more difficult coping with the pace of touring and recording as PTX got bigger, taking him away from his home and family more and more. He finally left the group, and is now producing his own music, on his own terms and at his own pace, releasing tracks like the outstanding “Change on the Rise”, “The Summit” or “Otherside”. These tracks bring Avis incredible vocal abilities into sharp focus, something that was easy to lose in PTX where his voice tended to be buried in the mix......essential, but hard for those who didn’t understand his role to pick out. Now as a solo performer you can truely marvel at the intensity, colour and texture of what is a stunning voice both in its power and it’s shading
