The reason that you are having no trouble with the truck is you, the way you drive, the way you load, the way you do your daily maintenance. You care about your truck, if you bought a couple more trucks and hired in drivers then chances you'd start having trouble.

I run a 1987 Peterbilt 377 with a 425 CAT 3406b, married to a 15sp with deep reduction. It gets a full oil and filter change every 30days......rears and tranny are full synthetic. This old horse hasn’t skipped a beat. I run west coast inc Cali and have never encountered any issues with the Police or DOT....she just aced a level 1 two weeks ago and the DOT guy shook his head and told me it’s in better shape than 80% of the newer trucks on the road. The key is maintenance and I mean regular maintenance. Nothing wrong with old iron.....it ain’t cool unless it’s old school 😉

Old trucks are better then new ones to me

I run a 1999 international with a C12 Cat . The oldest Tractor in our company fleet and the best running as far as I am concerned. That’s all the driver 😉 respecting my old tractor. It is not pretty but it’s a good hard working tractor. When I open the hood I can see and find everything that what I like most about the older equipment as well as they are much easier to work on. I have driven new equipment also but I have yet to be impressed with anything.

I used to run a 379L for a guy close by for a few years. That truck had a 3406E 15speed turned to 600hp. That thing consistently got 6.8 mpg running 65-75mph hauling loads up to 106,000. Hell of a nice ride. Another one a ant eater kw 1989 same exact except it was a day cab. Another fine example of a great workhorse. It didn't cost much to run. Hardly ever broke down until the engine got over that magic million miles.

This my point right here your type of truck is out running these new trucks I see it on a daily basis at the end of the day it's about dependable equipment not new and shiny good video good to see you again

I run an older B model show truck myself. I've spent money on the cosmetics for pride in the industry. I have customers call me wanting to haul their equipment because of they are proud to have me show up. I pull RGN so it makes a big difference because you're on a more personal level with the customer but I will say chrome will get paid.

Let them laugh I drive a 1988 Freightliner Cabover, one day when it got so cold all the new trucks froze up and broke down, I did their loads and my loads the old cabover was getting done, still have it. I had it on with West Motor Freight they will hire old trucks.

Hi I'm not a trucker and just found your channel by accident in a recommended viewing. You are 100% right running that truck, I work repairing older pre computer and emissions farm equipment for guys,the new generation tech's have no clue about diagnosing the old school ways. we have a family grain and livestock farm to the newest tractor is 2000 year with no computers either. This new agricultural stuff with computers and smurf piss injections crazy for being unreliable and expensive to fix to. I can't believe some of the horror stories from guys that still run the older tractors with the new stuff. The repair bills are regularly worth more than half what I paid in finance for my whole tractor or what their old reliable ones worth . Lots of them are now going to a 3 year lease so they don't own the newer crap when the warranty's out . Our neighbor here in Manitoba was an owner operator with a contract from Saskatchewan to Texas every week. He got a new truck the cheap part of his bills was new tires, Turbo's were more throw away than tires and filters.The cab leaked in the rain plus the other issues. So when he paid the repairs and maintenance he couldn't do he drove for fun pretty well. The truck before this he wore out and figured the new one would be cheaper to run Wrong!. He sold that new truck and totally rebuilt a pre emissions unit. he ran that 2 years then the contract company cut him off after 15 years with them, could be they didn't like the older truck. He sold the outfit and now works in a feedlot M-F 7.30 am- 5 Pm if they aren't busy. He said if he gets the urge he can drive a cattle truck locally for them, but he'd never go back to what he did before now with a new truck. Thanks for sharing your job with us Take care out there.

I own a construction company. I have a small Fleet of one ton trucks they are all either 1st Gen 12 valve Cummins, or 7.3 IDI Fords. No computers, no BS. I do all my own maintenance and repair, and my trucks virtually never go down in the field. When I Say Never, I mean less than once a year. Then I see my contractor friends with their brand new trucks in the shop because the computer won't stop brain farting and the trucks too complicated for them to work on. I've also never made a car payment in my life

I have been working on road tractors for many years, I graduated diesel school in 1990. Back then you either had a 855 Cummins or a 3406 Cat usually backed up with a 13 speed road ranger. Today I work for a International dealership, now keep in mind I graduated diesel school before most of the guys I work with were born. The first problem is you can't do anything without a lap top computer and the software to talk to the computer; Even for A/C repairs on Internationals. Next comes the electronics and aftertreatment systems, not to mention auto shift. The industry has changed a lot and is continuing to change, I'm not sure if it's for the better or worse; From my point of view it's a nightmare that won't go away. The funny part is these kids that can use the computer so good don't have a clue about how to fix something old school. While I suppose that makes me the old guy in the shop I still work circles around these kids, even on the electronic stuff now. I had to learn that all over again because I spent 10 years working on heavy equipment at a landfill that didn't have all that junk. Their isn't a whole lot that I haven't worked on over the years, yet I sure miss a two stroke Detroit. So if you ever find yourself in Ashland Virginia, I work for Rush Truck Center; And I can hook a brother up. LOL

I think the reason you are successful is because you have a business plan and are following the business plan. Your business plan is needing constant "adjustment", this is normal. I work for a company, now 175 years of success and proven growth, and this organization never wavers form it's long standing business plan. Way to go Brotherman Trucking!!!

Opinion's are like butt holes, everyone's got one, and, nobody appreciates yours as much as you do. When someone else pays my bills, that's when I'll start following their opinions. I'm with you 100% on the "old trucks" school of thought as well as, if you want to lease your truck to someone, do it with a "Mom & Pop" company...but, be careful, there are many of them who try to take advantage of O/O. I do not lease on to anyone. Most companies DON'T want to lease on anything beyond a certain year. If you ask why, they'll usually say "its an insurance thing". To my way of thinking, that's just an excuse. I run old equipment. I have NEVER had a problem getting my insurance company to cover it. I run my OWN authority. It's not hard to get and keep authority. It costs money, yes. You also have to be able to find work. But, again, that is NOT a huge problem to do. But, you have to be willing to do something more than just hold a steering wheel. Most carriers want you to be able to plug in an ELD. Landstar has required ELD's in BCO leased trucks for at least the last few years. BUT, you can STILL haul Landstar loads with your own authority. I will lease on high-caliber owner ops with older trucks. Money is money. Feel free to contact me.

Mechanical is always best. Tried and true, keeping you an honest driver. Never have an issue as long as you take care of her and when you do have one, the truck will tell you wuthout the aid of computer bullshit. That heart will keep going and the fuel milage possibly better then the new ones. I been trying to get my hands on one so its become a farm/show truck for cattle, dump, and flatbed trailers i plan on getting.

A Driver who I rode with to get an idea of trucking, had 35 years accident free. He drove for a company that was all older equipment. In the years I knew him, he never had a truck leave him on the side of the road, except when a turbocharger blew on it. He was towed to a truckstop and had the engine opened up and ready for the new one his boss dropped of after a days travel to reach the rig. A few hours later they both headed home. It was sold as a used rig, with some 1.2mil miles. I never entered the business. You have my respect for the work you do.

If anyone thinks that a 90 KW is old...I have a 79 "Jimmy" General leased to a small company. I also own a 06 Classic XL and 3 newer Shakers. They're all great trucks but I rotate driving the Jimmy n the Classic. The Jimmy is 8v92ta Detroit powered while my Shakers are Cummins N14s. Yes...the newer ones are more comfortable w/bigger sleepers n all that but I still love my Jimmy! I inherited him from my dad n restored him myself. That 2 stroke Detroit sounds great through 8s!!

I work for a freight shipping company as a dock worker / freight loader. The company has like 8 brand new trucks, five 1990s - late 2000 model trucks. Half of the newer trucks have problems with oil leaks, air compressor usually leaking on its lines and what not.

I run a 1995 Pete 379 with 3406 b Cat engine ( all mechanical) and pull a 1992 Fruehauf fuel tanker, truck works every day.I was inspected a while back the officer told me that my truck was in better shape than a lot of the newer ones he has inspected.Old school iron is the way for me

Yep the state of California is 1 of those states that says you can't enter their state in any truck older than 3 years old. Mechanical trucks are the only way to go. You don't need Uncle Sam & everybody else looking over your shoulder all the time while out on the road. I run all over this country for over 35 years & only made a check call 1 & sometimes 2 times a day.

I absolutely agree with you. My fleet shop went electronic with new truck engines and trucks. I prefer the older Peterbuilt waste trucks. So many new unwanted problems now especially with fuel delivery systems and less room for big hands to get around filters lines and hoses

Had a newer truck, $71.000.00 repairs in 1 1/2 years. Almost gave it away to get rid of it. Bought a 1998 KW W900, 12.7 Detroit, 18 speed. That truck brought me back from near bankruptcy and,did me very well for 7 years.

I did the same, old equipment, cheap insurance, and no payments. I pulled a lowboy, only hauled oversize and ran 48 states. I did my own repairs, including engine & transmission rebuilds, so I was not concerned about a breakdown 2,000 miles from home. Didn't spend money on paint & chrome, I had a family that was more important. Guys I worked with running new trucks always complained because I never hauled cheap freight. They were sometimes forced to because a huge payment came due every month. I simply told dispatch I could stay home and go broke. Call me when you have something worth hauling. A friend is still running a 1966 cabover throughout 48 states, hauling heavy and oversize loads. You sound like you've figured it out, Happy Trucking. The only advice I have is be sure to fund your retirement plan as much as possible every month and be aggressive with your mix of funds. Periodically re-balance & avoid things like precious metals. If you have a wife & kids buy life insurance worth at least five years income.

Let them laugh. I have a 1975 cabover Mack that is currently under restoration. It has a 300+ with a 5 speed and it will have a 4 speed auxiliary added to it. When it is done I'm going to work it every day. I will be pulling an end dump with it.

I am a former motor carrier who ran all 48 states and have (thankfully!!) been out of the business since 2003. My new truck is a 2011 Chevy 2500HD that I use to buy and sell skid loaders and other small equipment. I bought this truck in Texas with 174,000 on it and it's been nothing but a damn headache! The dash is lit up like a damn airplane dash because of all the stupid sensors on the newer trucks. The trailer brake system wouldn't work with my new hydraulic brakes, so now I have THAT light to put up with, now that I revamped the controller with a superior aftermarket one. The CEL is on because of some stupid sensor dealing with "emissions", and, worst of all, I found out, that on anything after 2010 the geniuses at the manufacturers have now wired their vehicles by switching the NEGATIVE wires, instead of using the positive side, so there are NO usable terminals in the fuse boxes if you want to tap in for a new stereo or some lights!!! Fuck that "new" crap!!! I'm going to build my next truck! It's going to be a rust-free 1997 F350 long bed crew cab that I will put a Gen 3 Cummins in, with a divorced transfer case and an Allison 6-speed automatic tranny in!!! The truck will run quietly, have tons of power, look like a million bucks and it will last FOREVER!! Keep on doing what you're doing and screw all ahat "new" crap!!!

Since I'm only 20 years old that means i am new to the business of being a owner/ operator or just trucking in general. I wanted to ask you guys some questions. My first question is if you guys think it would be a good idea for me to go to a community college for trucking and my second question is how much should I pay for a semi? My goal was to go to the Harrisburg Area Community College in PA and take their CDL courses. Then after I pass I was planning on buying a 2010 western star day cab for $18,000. I haven't looked at it in detail yet but it looks brand new and it doesn't have a spot of rust on it. I was also hoping to get a contract with the lowes distribution center that I current work at . I have a good relationship with the distribution center right now because of me working hard there as a order picker.

At this shop I used to be a mechanic at, we had this 90s international that was mechanical. I remember when we were in negative temps that truck would always start no matter how cold. We would spend hours trying to get all the newer trucks running.

I remember there was a time not too long ago where companies and brokers were wanting trucks that were new or a couple years old because they thought it would be more reliable for the load to be carried. Most of those new trucks were in the shop than they were on the road.

They stopped building good reliable trucks around the late 90’s early 2000’s. I run a 97 Freightliner Classic Flat top, a little slow but most reliable truck I’ve ever owned, never broke down yet and put minimal money into keepin it going. Then the rest of the guys at my company have newer faster trucks and they put 10-12 grand into repairs every few months.I sit back n smile while I check my bank account balance 😁

I also had a w900 and loved it now i drive a brand new vnl (but i can afford it) but i still have the kw in case the volvo breaks down but yeah old trucks might not have all the comforts as a new 2018 but im running a business and need equipment that won't cost me $$$ I'm at a point when i can buy a brand new truck cash and if it breaksdown i won't have a heartattack when i see a 3000k bill

The areas of transport logging, flat bed, heavy haul, tanker. They look for dependable, parts next day, easy to work on engines or Trk 's. The 2003/05 to today sensors and huge maintaining bills and alot of downtime. I like my 97 I've had issues but I'm out the door when there is an issue 3 HR normally, or when the parts get in.

over here in the netherlands they need to comply to emmision and the older truck dont comply so there not alowed intoo some of the cities no more , they upgrade the emmission standards every 3 to 4 years or so so fleetowners have to update theire trucks to keep their busines

My dads 2005 mack granite cv713 quad axle dump truck is really reliable and tough.. we know so many other guys with newer trucks that fail at the business or dont make as much after maintenence and losing work hours while their trucks are in the shop. They just dont make trucks how they used to nowadays.

Big difference between a Freightliner and a W900L! Your right that a lot of companies wont sign on an older truck. Especially hauling parrishables! But just like you said about flatbed, hopper bottom and most agricultural parts of the transportation industry, you will see old W9's, Petes, Internationals and Freightliner Classics and FLD's because they're reliable work trucks. Especially Pre-emmission W9's and Petes aka Large Cars! My pops ask me why don't i get a new truck right? I said pop do you know the value on my 1996 W900L 3406e 5ek block kitty? I said i park right next to the Kenworth dealership and that shop stays full of new trucks at $195.00 an hr! I only go there when i have to because its a Kenworth only part and to buy my Cat filters. I do buy other stuff here and there from them because i can get a decent membership deal on name brand parts but i will never voluntarily bring my truck over there because i cant stand the pain...lol...but i digress. I told my pop if i park my truck next one if those new ones and we both have for sale signs in the window, guess which one will move first? The 1996 W900L with the 3406e Cat will be gone before i get home and i live 15 minutes away! I see some guys with the old Volvos with Cats and Big Detroits with dual straight pipes running around and looking well maintained. What were we talking about again? Lmao...oh yeah, i called a couple of outfits i was interested in and they said as long as my truck passed their inspection, i could sign my truck on. Its a 96 first year E-motor and so i do have a data port to plug into. I'm running paper logs right now with Universal 👌

Nice looking KW got there it's got class. lot of pros and cons here on old truck new truck hailing refrigerated loads I think refrigerate loads the biggest thing on that is being on time and knowing what how to take care of your product I hauiled a lot of reefer loads time sensitive with my old truck far as an older truck goes owner operators I think it's the only way to go if your mechanically inclined new truck breaks down you're screwed not without a computer to diagnose it I also like the way my old truck also give me plenty of heads up before something let go usually I knew it needed attention long before it would let go and get it taken care of not with a computerized truck first clench and it shuts down positive side of a computerized truck not truck drivers would ever shoot you a curve they got tattletales in them they'll tell the mechanic and safety exactly what you were doing what time you're doing it and when you are doing it like if you're tired automatically that's something more drivers missing a lot of Gears he's either tired or he's ticked off at something hard braking company owner those things are important to know that deal on the compressor if I'm not mistaken that was the later model caterpillars were there are trying to work on the emissions and they were running the Breather air intake for the compressor into the intake manifold as well as the emissions and the damn compressor was getting all that crap in the compressor instead of recycle in through the engine which doesn't do the engine any good anyhow great videos good luck to you I like that part I just don't want to work that hard hell you got to make it $2,000 a month truck payment just that much more money you got to make to break even I had to add this one more thing I never got one more Penny a mile regardless of what year my truck was and that's a fact

The reason company's want new equipment besides the so called reliability issue is becuse I would rather hire owner operator that has truck payments and lots of bills because he needs to work harder then someone that has a old truck paid off. And I own my comany and that's what I look for in owner/ops hood are bad depends on how you look at it. HUNGRY DRIVERS MAKE ME MORE MONEY.

Love how the guys later on told you, your truck is pretty reliable. The newer diesel equipment is bogged down by emission control equipment on it, that's why guys want older Ford F-150's with the 7.3L diesel, then the brand new 6.7L Powerjoke! I have seen that problem first hand you we're talking about, oil leaking on the air compressor, just last week, you gotta take a lot of stuff off to get to the air compressor. Actually with all the DEF stuff, I'm betting your fuel economy is probably better. Freightshakers at garbage from the start. I have been a Kenny fan for yonks', other friends are Pete fans, and very rarely are they in the shop. Paccar units are as reliable as it can get. Great choice, keep them serviced properly, and they will give years a safe money making times.. Drive Safe and nice going because a lot of Older Trucks are coming back. Drivers are looking at the costs of New and then finding an older rig and spending a quarter of that New. Keep up the great work and advice. Oh and by the way, I began trucking in 1976. The difference between you and them is you actually take care of your truck since you own it. All these other people just drive them and let the company schedule all the maintenance.
