I own a 1997 century, not a horse troyan but the thing just keep running. Cheap and easy to fix parts makes the deteoit 60 series a very reliable engine. I love this truck and hope to put money into it in the coming months.

+FDXTRUCKER79 Yes Sir, I comprehend what you are saying and agree. These old trucks may not be the prettiest have the all of the room and bells and whistles of a newer truck, but at the end of the day, to each his own. I have about 2 or 3 payments left and then I can join the PAID OFF club!

FDXTRUCKER79 I was completely prepared to argue with you when I read the title of this video: "DON'T Buy An Old Truck" due to the number of breakdowns occurring with the new (2002 or newer I think) California compliant engine. I was stranded in Roanoke for a week awaiting parts all because of a clogged DPF in a Freightliner still under warranty! (It was the generation before DEF). 4-wheelers are no exception either. Ford sued Navistar (formerly International) due to the 6.0 2002 to 2006 being unreliable. If I was Navistar I would have said "Don't blame us, blame California!". Yeah you probably didn't proofread the title of this video good enough, but I ain't mad at ya. I will say this: I AGREE WITH YOU 100%!

Yeah i have a 1996 W900L 3406e Cat. And felluz let me tell you that I'm glad i can go after market for parts and my latino brother to do the installation of the parts if i cant do it. I buy my own oil and filters and he charges me $60.00 bucks to change the oil, filters and lube the truck. And when i need the engine worked on, i have a damn good Cat man (no shade tree) that can touch up the Big Kitty...lol. Also a good technician that can run diagnostics. Somebody ask if the older trucks get good mileage. I get 6 to 6.3 mpg as long as i keep my foot out if it. Not bad for 20,000lbs truck at 500hp. 10sp with 370's. Wanna get a 13sp that should smooth her out just fine. Hey guys you can do a few mods on your old truck to get your mpg and power up. Get rid of that stock exhaust. Straight pipe or after market(Dynoflex or Pittsburg Power or resonator). Get the ECM opened up. I dont switch fuels often. The Big Kitty loves Pilot fuel. QT and BP close 2nd. I use lots of synthetic oils. They keep all moving parts slick and keep the heat down. I changed my thermostat to a 180° because Cats sweat more than Detroits and Cummings. Keep everything fresh and always eye ball your truck from front to back. Use your nose and always listen to your truck. Thats your money maker and 2nd home. Keep everything thing adjusted (clutch, brakes, etc). My favorite part stores in my area are GREAT AMERICAN, GLOBAL PARTS, 18 WHEELER TRUCK PARTS, TRUCK PRO. Honorable mention, FLEET PRIDE! I only go to the dealership KENWORTH (Grab Your Ankles) if i have to. I'm not far from Kenworth and can testify on how many new trucks stay up in that mofo at $160.00 bucks an hour not including parts at dealership cost? Awww man you better bring your own grease! One last thing. No matter what! Always get the truck check out before you hand over any money. Full diagnostic, fuel pressure check, blow by, etc. From the rooter to the tooter! Ask for maintenance documents also. If the person selling the truck starts looking up at the sky with one eye squinted and saying ahhhhh...uhhhhh...i think it was 10,000 miles. Walk away unless the owner will pay for the full diagnostic to get it checked out! People can wash the engine and chassis to shine like new money. And as soon as you run 500 miles, you got leaks everywhere. Customer wont let you pull up on they're property to deliver the load...lmao. Thats my 2cents plus a lil more. God Bless and good luck in finding your truck👍

Hey there Brotherman!! I'll be done with school here in a lil bit and gonna come out to buy a 1973 Peterbilt 359! That's an classic rig right there but like you said you can always fix it yourself! Saves you money and time as well man. Not a big fan of today's rigs. The older guys are retiring and just leaving them in the yard rusted up or in the woods. Time to go old Skool again hahah, I'm only 20 by the way but know so much about the older rigs! Thanks for the video man and be safe Trucker 10-4

+Terrell Oliver Depends on newer trucks things tend to break. See with a older truck things that will break or going to break usually is taken care of. You ever notice all those recalls out there on new vehicles don't see them on older vehicles now do you. Just like the most recent Volvo recall the dag gone steering wheel can detach. See with a older truck all these issues are normally addressed and fixed prior to getting it. Most the problems with older trucks is maintenance issues. You get a nice older truck that's been in framed already all you need to worry about is basic maintenance. I owned both new and old. My old FLD hasn't cost me nearly as much as the new truck. New ECU at 50k inframe at 300k air conditioning at 100k not to mention $18k to fix the DPF def system.

+Terrell Oliver Don't be surprised with the new ELD regs when you see alot of pre 2000 trucks back on the road. As for a newer truck I would highly suggest 2007 being the newest. In 2008 is when all the EGR carb compliant junk started being put on. The way trucks are designed today mechanics don't diagnose anymore they throw parts at it to get it limp down the road until something else goes wrong. When I owned the new truck I had to buy an expensive computer program and diagnostics tool to be able to work on it myself and if it wasn't for warranty I'd be in a world of hurt. My FLd I blew the transmission but $1500 I was back on the road. I been an owner operator now for 8 yrs been driving for 16 yrs. I went from old trucks to a new back to old because for me the older truck was more reliable. If you have any questions feel free to pick my brain. I can't speak for everyone but I can share my experience and what I've learned a long the way.

I was born in 1987 and being-home schooled, have ridden in Trucks all my life. My Father started teaching me how to drive when I was five and I would never touch any of the "New" trucks. Anything made before 1995 is what I say are the best trucks. ECM motors always have the potential to go bad; even the E-cats, DD60's or N14's, stay away from them. If you cut me I'd bleed CAT yellow, but I like NTC cummins motors from the 250's on up to the KTA's. The old mechanical detroit engines like the 2-71's, 4-71's, 6-71, 8-71 and 12-71's, not to forget the "Screaming Demon" 318, are simply awful sounding to me; but they get as good or better mpg as any of the DD13-16 junk that "Detroit" puts out nowadays and they are way more reliable. Mack made great mechanical engines too, but nothing has ever beat CAT. On that note, the B-Cat is a solid motor, but you'd be smarter to get a 3408 or the original "four and a quarter Cat" the 1693. I've studied the history of diesel engines and nothing tops a 1693. I know all the modern myths. "it's a fuel hog" or "it's too heavy" or "it doesn't have a jake brake", but all of that doesn't matter. Jake brakes work by compression and that slowly deforms your cylinders and pistons, weakening them over time; 3408's and 1693's got around that by the use of exhaust brakes and oil-driven brake savers which (when combined with gearing down as you go down a hill, slow for township, etc) held even severely overweight trucks from getting out of control. Plus all the weight of either engine's iron absorbed heat, helping things to stay cool. How do I get fuel milage with those monsters, you ask? Easy: More gears; Back in the days of real trucking (1930's-80's) "Dial-a-gears" like air shifted 9-18 speeds were what the companies brought. For independent owner-operators, twin or triple stick transmissions (5x4 or 6x4, up to 24 gears) were the way to go. No loss of power through the driveline or transmission coolers needed plus 3% or better fuel mileage and more torque to the tires. "The EPA or CARB won't allow these engines" False. On another of Brotherman trucking's videos, one gentleman who drives a '77 Pete 377 with a B-Cat into California mentions that he pays for some sort of exemption ($2,000 per year) plus he changes his filters every 30 days. If a B-Cat can do it, why not a 3408 or 1693? Low rear end gears (4.11 to 5.25) are the best for long haul. progressive upshifting raises the ratio to "tall gear" range. For example: Rear axle ratio of 4.11* 0.68 transmission top gear overdrive = Final gear ratio of 2.79. That means you can fly down the road saving fuel with the strength of hill-climbing ratios all at the same time. The old mechanical engines were geared to run at 18-2400 rpm; this is good because the engine can work without straining itself (Like a runner who has warmed his heart before a track meet). KTA's, 3408's or 1693's have torque curves that rise gradually until around 2100 rpm then they go down gradually instead of falling off fast like the ECM and pre or post EGR motors from CAT, Cummins, Mack, Volvo or Detroit. This permits the ability to hold power at high or low speed without straining the engine and burning more fuel via the 20+ gears of "Twin sticks". All 3 of these motors were the engines of choice for the outlaw truckers of the 1960's-80's like "Southern Shaker", "Plum Crazy" or the legendary Monfort truckers of Colorado. One 1969 freightliner cabover with a CAT 1693, 6x4 transmission and 3-speed rear ends was clocked at 147 mph with 40,000 in the box. Another 1693 powered truck clocked at 125 mph pulling a lowboy with a D9 Cat aboard weighing 80,000 pounds! Imagine what a guy or gal can do at 65-75 mph with such an engine climbing Grapevine, Shasta, Monteagle or Cabbage hill. As for the 3408, gosh! Truckers used to say "You'll never be late with a 3408" for a reason. That thing ate mountains for breakfast and the KTA 450's and 600's were no exception. I met a lot of independent truckers and old-time shop mechanics over the years from age 5 on up and they were kind enough to share a good many of the secrets of mechanical diesel engines; they are easy to fix and care for. If you treat them gently (no jack-rabbit starts from a stoplight, etc) and check them over after every trip they LAST FOREVER. Any truck from the 1930's forward can be put to work in today's industry. One driver has a 1948 peterbilt 351 with KTA 600 which still runs long haul. Another drives a 1962 kenworth with a 220 cummins pulling a 53' footer with 8 million miles on it, last I heard. With the internet, you can find the parts to care for these old horses and they WILL outdo anything new. Autocar, Brockway, Chevy Bison, Dodge Bighorn, Emeryville's, Freightliner WFT and WFC's, Ford LTLs, Mack Cruiseliner and Superliners, Peterbilt 281, 350 series, 379's are all the best of trucks. Buy them and you'll really be trucking! People say the great days of Trucking are gone, but if you've got the guts to buy the right truck and drive independent (own your own trailer, no brokers, run coast to coast) because you love this way of life, you'll beat the challenge!

All about the maintenance and how you keep it up . Really don’t need a brand new truck , if that truck can run for at least 5 months there is your down payment on a more up to date truck for about 25-30k cause you’ll be make at least 3-5k a week , gross about 20k a month hell you can buy a better truck in do time . It’s not what you start off with , it’s what you end up with in the future

I bought my truck new, back in 1994 it is a Mack Ch model with the 42" sleeper. I have been the only operator of it since the day it left the lot. I concur about the "older truck, you can work on it yourself" I do, I have quite a bunch of tools that I've purchased over the years for it and they more than pay for themselves as I've used the tools on my cars and around the house too. The only regret, is that when I bought it, I wish I had bought a bigger sleeper but at the time I got what my budget allowed me to spend. Don't be afraid of an older truck if you know what you are doing and you take good care of it.

I like the old B-61 Macks. Those mostly came with 2 sticks. Newer trucks for sure have the softer rim steering wheel while the old ones have a hard rim steering wheel. The new trucks do have what much of the old time truckers would call are Roadranger transmissions with air switches and some even have automatic transmissions. The road rangers are easier to handle since you have only one lever with air switches to go thru all your gears. The ones in the 1950s and the early part of the 1950s, you mostly had 2 sticks and those trucks were a job to handle. The thing I like about the L model Macks and some of the Diamond Ts, were that you had the windshield wipers hanging from the top. Those were good since when you ran them, you had the clean part right where you were trying to see.

I would never buy anything later than 2007. EGRs aren't too much of a problem. Block them off properly, and then make sure they're deleted off the computer, otherwise the thing will look for the EGR the whole time and lots of your settings will be bad. I swear by the old N14s, but the Cat 3406 runs a strong second. If I got crazy and bought a new truck, I'd get a glider and drop in a crate N14 dialed up to 600. But up here in Canada the feds banned gliders. A lot of companies up here require you to have 2010 or newer trucks. But that's because some jurisdictions in the States are ecco freaks.

Buying cheaper trucks is better. Even with the maintenance costs, they are still cheaper, although you will need to have money set apart. Many newer trucks cost, $100,000+ or leasing payments are $500-$1000/week. This requires one to have a lot more cost required.

Older post-emission trucks - like Cascadias, are popular. But I’m seriously beginning to look further back myself, like a pre-emission FLD. The only things that would discourage that would be if states - like California, begin banning them, or companies won’t lease with an older truck. But the old trucks make a lot of sense, it’s the reason gliders are so sought after.

(1992-1998) I rode in 2 FLD's: a '94 baby bunk 48" and a '95 70" condo sleeper. To a nine-year-old kid, that big 70" FLD was a two-story house on wheels and I loved the truck so much I named it Justin. It was running a 12.7 DD60 hooked to a 10-speed so it could do 70 on the flat (fast for a Werner truck). That long snout was a great way to combine aerodynamics with the ram-air effects of a square hood. I met a lot of Werner drivers who were excited to get the Freightliner century class trucks when they came on the fleet; three weeks later, you'd see them at truckstop phone booths or at the dispatchers' windows at the big Omaha terminal BEGGING for an FLD, no matter how old! You see, the smaller, more curved hoods of the century classes and later Columbia trucks allow far less air into the radiator; plus the grill sat lower and the upper part of the engine got hotter a lot faster. Never had that problem with the FLD's! When Werner stopped buying FLD's and started selling the last batch off, everybody that wasn't driving a 379, classic xl or one of the White GMC/Volvos was scrambling to grab an FLD and who could blame them? The Cascadia has a big hood, but it still slopes too shallow to equal the cooling ability of an FLD or Classic XL hood, let alone the old WFC. Besides, as an overall truck, I haven't heard as much praise for the Cascadia as the FLD. If you get an FLD, make plans to get a BC400 or 475 or B-Cat motor with a set of Spicer 6x4 twin sticks and gear that old horse to run 75-80 mph ( 4.11 rear ends x 0.68 transmission overdrive ratio = 2.79 rear end ratio in top gear.) You'll save fuel, get wherever you're going faster and the shipper/consignee might keep you in mind the next time he needs a load delivered without having to wait a whole week for that load of produce from Seattle when he can call you and your...oh...four and a half day FLD, eh?

It's almost always cheaper to buy the tools than it is to hire it out. That being said... at the end of the day you'll have a mountain of tools that only get used one time. I know. I'm that guy. I've got a garage full of tools. So many that when it comes down to it... if I do happen to need a tool a second time, the odds of me finding it in that pile of tools are so slim that time wise it's cheaper for me to go buy a second tool then dig threw all my tools to find the one I know already have. Think about that for a second. Lol.

Random Guy On KZfaq yes I'm 16 as well and older pickups make the best options because they're easy to maintain and work on because They don't have so much technology so they're more reliable, best bet is any ford or Chevy doesn't matter the size but for a first truck I highly recommend a Chevy s10 4.3 V6 4x4 those have good power and are real tough and easy to drive and the same goes for ford rangers

Get yourself a Cummins 475 twin turbo or 3406B CAT. All these old mechanical motors need are the right transmissions (Spicer 5x4, 6x4) and rears (4.11-5.25)to make them pull right. Don't worry about how low the axle ratios i suggest may seem; with overdrive ratios that can get as low as 0.68, once you get in top gear, you will be flying and with better mpg!

How old would you consider too old? I've got a family to raise and i'm considering getting in before the next oilfield wave caused by the next middle east conflict, I dont have alot of faith in our current Administration to avoid trouble over in the sandbox. There seems to be a boost in prices of 95-99 trucks due to recent emissions regulations changes (costing as much as those post 2000) so I was wondering if 88-94 was too old. I'd really like ABS (especially as a new driver) but except for that i'd want a mechanical injection diesel, maybe Cummins Big Cam III (as the IV had some problems) as I hear nothing but good. I like trucks like the 88-93 Peterbilt 372 due to the aerodynamics and that was what I was hoping to find but was worried about whether it'd be hard to turn my own wrenches on a cabover and didnt know how hard it would be to backconvert an engine to Big Cam 3 parts. (or if that's even emissions legal) If you have any suggestions on where I could learn about all this, from working on older trucks, checking them out myself (what to inspect), turning my own wrenches (I do on one ton trucks already but nothing Class 8 size) on big diesels, and other hints i'd be grateful... :)

Anything from late 1930's on up can work in today's industry, friend. I rode with my father during the 90's till 2008 and I've seen a lot of rigs. My father taught me to drive in his lap when I was 5 and I've been across all lower 48 states and Canada. You are very wise to be looking at 88-93 because that's around when the last of the truly good trucks were made. The Big Cam III is a solid motor with a good rep when well cared for by yourself (I'm a dyed in the wool CAT Fan) and in today's industry a fairly fast truck with good fuel milage will keep you well ahead of the game. Please don't misunderstand me: I'm NOT saying that you should blow through construction zones or speed through towns, but when the road is clear, you make up time and thus have plenty of time to find places to rest. I grew up in cabovers and they are solid trucks. Don't buy all the hash about "They ride to rough and mess up your back" or "They're rolling bricks. They'll never get good fuel mileage". Bah Humbug! Cabovers were the dominant trucks on the road in trucking's heyday of the 1950's-70's. These were the trucks more often than not clocking 130-40 mph over 1,000 mile-a-day runs from California to Hunts Point, NY; and they did it without all of the ECM, ELD, CARB and other hogwash problems we're up against now. Spring ride or rubber block suspension was the way to go for independent truckers, not air ride. (Either one could adjusted for any level of comfort a driver desired) Power steering? Don't go for it. Old rack and pinion is best, it can be adjusted by hand to where you can turn the wheel without much effort even when sitting still; and when rolling, you get far better feel and control of your rig at any speed. As for transmissions, keep away from the autos. They need coolers and computers to run and even then, they can't do what a good 13 speed with double overdrive via reversed gears can do, let alone the old Spicer 5x4 or 6x4 twin sticks for speed, fuel mileage and PULLING POWER. Now back to the Cummins motors, my advice is talk to the grain haulers and old school bull haulers-as in the ones who ran triple digit speeds back in the day without drugs or no sleep. They'll tell you everything you need to know about old small cam 350 and big cam 400's that can blow a CAT's doors off without half trying or get 7 mpg at 75-80 mph. My favorite Cummins motor is the NTC 475 twin turbo. It can be turned up to 800 hp, but you can leave it at 475 and use the 20+gears of 5x4 or 6x4 twin sticks to out-pull and outrun anyone with even 1,000 hp engines. I hope to buy a 1960's-80's Pete 359 with a CAT 1693 or 3408. Either one of these monsters will make loads of money without breaking your wallet IF you drive them gently and let them run at 1850-2100 rpm. Look up B.C Fry, Southern Shaker, Monfort trucking and study the performance of their engines. These guys ate 100 mph for breakfast and they did it without running over anybody. You can check this link out too. hankstruckforum.com/htforum/index.php?topic=62572.15 There's a fellow who says he ran with Monfort back in the day and they did not run 100 mph, but don't buy it; they were famous for crossing Ohio in 2.5 hours flat. Again, I'm not telling you to speed, just that the trucks you're interested in have the most solid of credentials where it really counts. Don't be afraid of falling in love with some old GMC Crackerbox with a Cummins 250, 262 or V12 that looks like a horse wanting you to take it home with you. Kenworth, International, Mack, White Freightliner, Brockway, Dodge, Mack, Western Star, Ford, GMC and Diamond Reo: All of them made magnificent cabovers back in the day. These trucks were made to work and work HARD. You have a family to support? These trucks will get the job done. Pick the ones with axle ratios of 4.11 or higher and hook them up to a Spicer 5 or 6x4 or 13x4 twin stick transmission and you'll have final axle ratios of 2.79 and overdrives as low as 0.53 whenever you need it. The sleepers are very comfortable and with the dog house, you have a ready work desk for your maps, papers or your meals right beside you as you drive. Forgive me if I seem to have gone on a soapbox, but I love trucking very much and can't help talking about it. (Don't hang a huge bumper up front, it keeps air from cooling your engine.) One last thing: Trucking is a way of life, not a job. You get ahead by using business sense and your heart, not one over the other. Pick the truck you love and hang onto it for all your career, no matter what happens. Take care and God bless you.

Thanks for the responses, though you also piqued my curiosity! :) What in the world kind of power would be needed to run 140mph?? Tires didn't blow up with those loads and speeds? I guess I just find that all a bit fascinating, i'd heard stories about older time trucking but assumed some was myth. Why would springs be better than air ride? I assumed air ride would be softer... or is it "almost as good but more trouble prone" what you mean for the indie trucker? "Triple overdrive via reversed gears" curious what you meant by reversed gears, also I was wondering if you can convert newer trannies to older style triple overdrive (where it was like 0.82 0.73 0.64 or whatever it used to be) by swapping the right gear in those Eaton Fuller RTO's... swapping a whole trans seems like alot of work and cost otherwise to gain a little more gear. Everyone seems to have gone direct drive for awhile but that only works if I want to piddle along at 62mph and click the splitter down a 'half' gear on the hills... i'd like something with a... wider speed capacity for driving out west mostly. I have a buddy who wants to get into trucking with me to work as a team so we can run the truck nonstop. He's got a family too. Were hoping to put in a few hard years the next time the oil climbs for the sky to make some headway for each of our families, whether or not we do it nonstop after, i'm just the one looking for the truck first. Also any suggestion of where to go to learn how to turn my own wrenches on older iron as well? I figure with a paid for truck, two of us driving, and me fixing it when it's down (if I can learn how above and beyond that 1 ton pickup repair level I already do) we could make some headway on our debts and such.

Brotherman! Sorry to be commenting on an old video. But, the topic couldn't be more relevant than now! You said it! Old iron is good iron! Having watched some of your other video's, the title on this one made me scratch my head! I couldn't agree with you more. Pollution controls and electronic everything are just as much if not more $ than maintaining an old truck! Yes, old trucks need repairs and maintenance, all trucks need that. But, once you DO the repair, assuming it was done right, if you maintain it, you won't have to do THAT repair again for a LONG time. Lone Mountain is for people who want to get ripped off and be out of business FAST! Search Lone Mountain videos on KZfaq, there are PLENTY of them out there...fella's, STEER CLEAR of them and other outfits just like them! I prefer old trucks out of the southwest, from the farmers who drove them. You can also find good trucks from old-school O/O's who are "hanging up their hat". These guys keep equipment long time, generally take good care of it. Recently, I bought a '96 Intl 9200 Eagle from a farmer in OK, southwest of Lawton. Had $30K in repair receipts for work done in the last 100K mi including a fresh crate motor, rebuilt 13 spd, clutch, new turbo and radiator. I paid $10,500 for it. That was a rare find!!! You have to look for them, their out there. At the same time I found this truck, I ran across a NICE '96 FLD 120, original owner, clean in and out. Lots of recent work, good tires and brakes. He was an O/O who unfortunately was side-lined from a stroke, was selling his truck and trailer, but willing to separate, $9K for the truck. I didn't have cash for both. Shortly after, I sold my old truck, contacted this fella right away, it was gone. Someone got another good old truck! During my recent search, I personally went out, test-drove old trucks in a 375 mi radius. Putting it mildly, stuff in the sub $20K price range was ROUGH, easily needing $15-30K in repairs. But, even if you bought one at full price, gave the $ to your mechanic to fix, in comparison to what you get at a Lone Mnt, you'd STILL be money ahead! Here is 2 more things to tell people considering buying a truck: 1.) No matter what you buy, have a reserve fund for repairs. You'll put $ into it to make it "road ready". But, as soon as you start driving it, you'll uncover a few more "hidden" issues. And, as you generate revenue, always set aside something for on-going maintenance and repairs. 2.) Brotherman, I know you know this point well, maybe you didn't want to come right out & say it, so I'll say it for you: Old iron = No ELD!!! It is AMAZING how many people still don't know this ELD exemption. It isn't a "magic box". If there isn't an "ECM", then there's no place to plug in an ELD! GPS based ELD's are NOT allowed! In fact, thankfully, the rules come right out and address the technology to say it is not considered reliable for accurate positioning. Nice of them to have clarified that. Thank GOD for loop holes! So, not only is the old iron easier to fix, and frankly, can be the same if not lower cost on fuel (no DEF), you can still use "paper" logs OTR! Keep up the great videos and, safe trucking to you Brotherman!!!

Just read your comment and I couldn't agree more! I was born in 1987 and grew up in real trucks; Pete 362's and Freightliner Cabovers with Werner in the '90's until my family bought a 2001 Classic XL from Werner (Shame we didn't wait a year longer, we could have got one with a CAT C-15 and 13 speed in it) Anyway, that old classic had a DD60 with 10-speed and could pull 120 mph on the flat with about 25,000 lbs in the trailer. I got it up to 85 in Arizona just before my 17th birthday with my father in the right seat. He was a lazy steering wheel-holder who left the family and we had to sell the truck, but I've been watching the industry while getting ready for college and the Air Force. ELD's are nothing but instruments of slavery and nothing but. Even highway patrolmen have told truckers that they support the stance of the owner-operator on the subject. Paper log is best for two reasons: It can't be hacked or lost due to a computer glitch and it doesn't show where you are to the whole cyber-underworld. I am making plans for a reserve career in the Air Force so I can drive part-time. My dream truck: 1985 blue Pete 359 with a 250" WB with skinny bumper, 24.5 hi-pros, old-school 5" mile-high stacks, 36" aerodyne custom sleeper with chaparral interior, Corvette dash with 22 gauges and 6x4 twin sticks. Engine: CAT 1693 425 hp with brakesaver and exhaust brake. If you ever see me, I'll be pulling either a Great Dane 53' spread axle reefer or a quad axle 53' Cattle trailer. Just shout for the "Texas Cowboy" and the "Frontier Pony Express".

+Terrell Oliver I was originally leased onto Mercer when I started out ran for them about 4 yrs as a lease contractor. I started out with a Freightliner Classic and drove it until 2012 when I bought the new truck. I was able to purchase a trailer through Mercer. In 2012 I had enough savings bought a new KW t680 and applied for my authority. In 2014 I got rid of the new truck for a 93 Fld120 that I drive today. I thought the same way if I bought a new truck I wouldn't have the hassle but it was constantly down I had a 2000 a month truck payment 1600 a month insurance payment. I was quickly going through savings and in 2014 I had enough. Now I built my savings back up I am only down for regular maintenance and I can fix majority of the problems myself. I have 1.3 mil on my truck and still going strong. probably 2 more yrs before I need an inframe.

+Terrell Oliver I wouldn't see any issues you make your own schedule just during drill for the 2 weeks or deployments might mess you up if you have a truck payment. I appreciate your service.

+Terrell Oliver usually company's have their own trailers. Leasing through a company works with some people but not everyone. You get fed up you can't take the truck anywhere. The only 2 company's I know off the top of my head that you can buy a trailer is Mercer or Celadon both if you leave you can't take equipment with you unless it's paid off. With Celadon you can buy the truck and trailer the truck is through quality co. If you decide to leave you can take the truck to like 25 different companies using quality co but can't take the trailer. If you get your own financing and truck you can take it where ever and the cost to purchase will be about 20% lower than going through a company. What ever you decide stay percentage and don't do mileage as a o/o. On mileage your basically stuck with how many miles you run and kinda capped roughly 4k a week. As percentage I can do a 500 mile run and make $1200 my profits are limitless as long as I get good freight. So a lot to consider being fairly new I would lease onto a company get experience that way because running your own authority there is a lot behind the scenes that without experience will be a struggle.

+Terrell Oliver The truck isnt what is cheaper it is insurance and fuel. My insurance truck and trailer is $1200 a month leased to a company you get the discounted rate usually 7-800 a month. Fuel you can get up to .40 off a gallon plus a fsc. I only get .06 off because I pay cash and no fsc. So in a sense it is cheaper but if you look at the price of their zero down lease purchase trucks you will pay $220k for a truck that a dealer is selling for $170k or $180K.

its not about research its where you haul your freight my customer base is in cali I run produce coast to coast and make ok money but cali wants new trucks so after 16 years of building customer base I had to choose to buy new truck and take care of my customers or do something different if you plan on going to cali then you need newer truck but if you not going there why waste the money its just the way it is
