Watch me watch this classic 1988 horror movie, They Live, in this first time watching reaction video! They Live tells the story of a drifter who discovers sunglasses that give the viewer the ability to see more than the average human. The media and the government are comprised of subliminal messages trying to keep the population asleep, and that most of the high powered elite are an alien race bent on world domination.

The film was written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning". They Live stars Roddy Piper as Nada, Keith David as Frank, Meg Foster as Holly, George 'Buck' Flower as Drifter, Peter Jason as Gilbert and Raymond St. Jacques as Street Preacher.
Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for They Live, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss.
Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

But it wasn't intended to be relevant today, it was a satirical indictment of the republican party and in particular, Ronald Regan's "shut up and be happy with your luxury and excess that you're only promised if you work hard for our benefit" system of governing. Though I suppose it IS somewhat relevant to Donald Trump's presidency, in part... but if you want a movie that more paralells Trump's america, I suggest the film Idiocracy.

Fun fact: WWE Hall of Famer, Roddy Piper and Kieth David actually brawled for over 5-minutes and it looks authentic because it was. The director, John Carpenter told them to just "have at it, just don't kill each other."

I couldn’t tell you what it really means either. It was one of those - “Roddy, you’ve got bullets on you, you’ve got a shotgun, you’ve got sunglasses, you go into a bank, you’re not gonna rob it, say something … action!” I’m all out of bubblegum. @@PaulWinkle Agreed. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is a great movie in a similar vein to They Live (1988). The paranoia is palpable in that one.

I don't believe that streaming platforms will play it nowadays. This movie may be subversive in these days, these strange days we're living... A great number one movie, humor, fist fights (perhaps the best one ever), aliens, global conspiracies, great music and above all, A HUGE MESSAGE AND A GREAT ORIGINAL IDEA.

For the fight scene, in order to truly emphasize how epic he wanted it to be, after the obligatory [Nada and Frank fight] direction, Carpenter put two blank pages int the script. The fight scene was also probably helped by the fact that the guy playing John Nada was "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, one of the best and most popular professional wrestlers of the 80s.

I'm 44 and saw this movie when I was around 13 years of age. It's one of my favorite films of all time and I love seeing a younger person appreciate it. Fun facts: The actors really started fighting during the fight scene in the alley and they just let the cameras roll for much of it. Southpark also did a parody of the fight in an early episode. Great pick! Great reaction! You're rapidly becoming a Carpenter fan! This was a condemnation of Reaganomics but it's still happening today! Star 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, a former wrestler, called the film a documentary! That's brilliant. The protracted fight scene in the alley over the glasses between Roddy Piper and Keith David was famously parodied on "South Park"! Keith David is one of those actors who elevates anything he's in. He has such a distinctive rumbling voice. I had the good fortune to run into him at a Broadway show years ago. I was tongue-tied and nervous but he was kind enough to give me his autograph. He co-starred with Kurt Russell in Carpenter's "The Thing". Meg Foster has the spookiest eyes; a pair of piercing pale blue beauties that look right into your soul. Peter Jason, the leader of the cell who runs the Hooverville, appears in 7 John Carpenter films! George "Buck" Flower, the bum turned collaborator, appears in 6. Mr. Flower began his career in soft-core porn, became a genre mainstay usually playing bums in scores of films, appeared on dozens of popular TV shows and is best known for his association with John Carpenter. His role as the opportunistic hobo in "They Live!" is probably his best showcase. If you haven't seen these Carpenters, they're worth the effort even if they're not all horrors. I'd love to see your reaction to them. "Assault on Precinct 13" ('76) is early Carpenter and a really good B-movie reminiscent of "Rio Bravo". "The Fog" ('80) is atmospheric early Carpenter horror that re-teams him with Jamie Lee Curtis. "Escape From New York" is my second favorite Carpenter after "The Thing" set in a Manhattan that's been converted into a prison! Kurt Russell stars. "Christine" is a really solid Stephen King adaptation about a killer car. "Starman" is a great sci-fi romance with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. It's one of Carpenter's best. "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" is a Carpenter comedy with a serious Chevy Chase. "In the Mouth of Madness" is excellent Lovecraftian horror with Sam Neill. "Vampires" is a down-and-dirty action film about vampire hunters with James Woods. "The Ward" is his most recent psychological horror and a return to top form after some duds.

This movie was released during the Reagan Era, where Carpenter shows us how corrupt our government is. There were talks of a remake but as of 2018, there have been no further developments. Matt Reeves( The Batman) was in talks to direct.

Go to a 3rd world country where there is no consumerism! Also no jobs to service those consumers and endless poverty! How horrible!🙄🙄🙄 If only we could all just live in a liberal fantasy world and pretend to be good people and help others without actually having to make a difference! Only a spoiled hippie in a first world country who can’t compete in society complains about consumerism! Reagan era is one of the pinnacles of society! It’s why the movies and the music and everything about it is remembered so fondly because people were happy at that time in America!

A similar film that I think you'd like is the 1984 cult classic "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension". I watch it probably once a year, love it. There are some great characters too: John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd and Jeff Goldblum. Peter Weller ("Robocop") stars.

The alley fight scene is iconic, and has been recreated in other movies and TV shows several times, it was even done in an episode of South Park. Each used the specific line "You dirty mutha...." muttered by David Keith's character when Roddy's character went for the crotch punch. Another interesting note, the short story this is based on is extremely short, only about 6 pages long. This whole movie was derived from a story that can be read in about 10 minutes.

This movie is so smart, its one of my favorite Carpenter films. Roddy Piper played the lead, he was a famous pro wrestler back in the 80's. He's actually one of my favorite wrestlers ever. Piper is known for being one of the best talkers in wrestling history and in this movie Carpenter let him add lib a lot of lines and he does deliver many great lines in the film. Unfortunately Piper passed unexpectedly several years ago, R.I.P. Roderick Tooms. They Live is so good, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I am super picky about horror (anxiety woop woop) but dang, I love this film so much. It knows how to be scary without really any scares or gore and I love it. But wow, that final shot stayed with me for a bit...😳 I love that you reacted to this because I don't see many people actually talk about it and its quality.

Same! That’s why I usually avoid horror movies haha I love this film too! It’s horror but it’s more psychological than a slasher movie and it’s the concept that’s terrifying to me instead of some boogeyman. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video!

One of my favourites of Carpenters filmography, while it does have a specific political message (that being John’s hatred of what had been called Reagan’s America) he made this movie as a ‘fuck you’ to the rich and wealthy, the thing I respect about it is that it doesn’t overtake the core and point of the movie which is a kickass alien are among us movie, the late great Roddy Piper was awesome as Nada (his name is revealed in the credits) and you truly believe him as a working class dude who just wants to keep to himself but eventually rises up as the hero and becomes one of the most iconic and kickass protagonists of the 1980s

The greatest B-Movie ever made. I love it so much. I was a big Rowdy Roddy Piper fan from way back. He did such a great job in this movie. Such a good dude in real life, too. He is still missed. This movie is not subtle at all. It 'bonks' you right in the face with it's satire. Just beautiful. Glad you enjoyed it. That fight scene with the Piper and Keith David may not be the best fight scene ever filmed but it just might be my favorite one. Brutal and kind of funny at the same time. And so many quotable lines. Carpenter at his best. Peace

The movie didn't do well when it came out. I was 12 a thought it was awesome. It was supposed be Rowdy Pipers big break. I still love this film and think it still stands up even today.

The 80s were full of subliminal advertising, so much so that it stayed in the news, and as a teenager I remember it blew my mind to see the change in advertising. Yeah, ads before then weren't really as allusional and vague as they all are now. Y'know. Toothpaste was toothpaste. The ad would be a kid brushing his teeth while the voices in his head told him "1 out of 10 dentists didn't recommend this"

The late great Canadian wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper. Many of the one liners from this movie including the famous bubble gum one we're ones he'd actually written to use in the ring. While most of them were throwaway lines he hadn't used while wrestling, after this movie he got a lot of use out of the bubble gum line.

Just found your channel with this video and I'm really enjoying it. Besides this I've watched Hills Have Eyes and Halloween. I'm a huge horror fan and you're doing some great films here. I hope you can check out more of John Carpenter's work like Village of the Damned and In The Mouth of Madness. They Live! is one of my all time favorites and is maybe more relevant today than ever. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who just passed away a few years ago, was a really popular wrestler and my favorite when I was a little kid who still watched wrestling back in the day. He does a tremendous job in this movie and some of the ones liners, like the chewing bubble gum line, were his. Carpenter asked Roddy for some lines that he would use in his wrestling interviews and Piper wrote down a number of them for the director. Carpenter especially liked that one and put it in the script and it has become one of the more famous lines in movie history.

I saw this in a theater with a college roommate, when it was released. We both loved it, especially that epic fight scene, which might be the longest in film history. I think Kurt Russell was originally considered for the lead role in this movie. You might want to check out John Carpenter's _Memoirs of an Invisible Man._

The Chew bubblegum line Roddy Piper actually wrote for wrestling but improvised it, into the movie. He was my fav wrestler till the Rock came around he still an All-time Icon and 1 of the best

If you notice this movie has never been played or never gets played on TV or cable for simple reasons. It's actually a documentary more than a movie it tells you how the world really operates.

You should do some films directed by Oliver Stone. Stone, a Vietnam war veteran has made two trilogies. One trilogy of films focusing on the Vietnam War “Platoon”, “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Heaven & Earth”. The other trilogy focusing on US Presidents “JFK”, “NIXON” and “W.”

The bubblegum line is originally from this but the line is also very well known not only for the film but cause of the 1990s video game Duke Nukem 3D.

You don't know most of the cast? Well, Keith David co-starred with Kurt Russell in The Thing and appeared with Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, and Tom Berenger in Oliver Stone's Platoon. Meg Foster has been in a lot of stuff, but most recently she was in the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, Ravenwood. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was a professional wrestler for the WWF(now WWE), but sadly passed away in 2015 from cardiac arrest. George "Buck" Flower has appeared in several John Carpenter movies, including The Fog and Escape From New York, which I also recommend.

I think my memories of The Thing were mostly focused on the alien virus tearing peoples insides apart 😬 I’ve never seen Platoon or Pretty Little Liars.

@@ReelReviewsWithJen That's understandable. lol The Thing is pretty intense. I wasn't a fan of Pretty Little Liars. Platoon won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1986, but it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. Also, you might've noticed that the man in charge of the resistance was also one of the scientists in Prince of Darkness.

The reason why he's got such great one-liners is because he invented them John Carpenter picked that line from a whole bunch of one-liners that Roddy Piper invented or Roderick Toombs which is his real name you see Rowdy Roddy Piper was a wrestler and that I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass was one of his one-liners that John Carpenter picked out and so we got to use that in the movie he was my favorite wrestler and I miss him

Speaking of... Have you done Pontypool yet? If you're doing "horror I missed" you need to have that Can-Con, right? And it's so good. Kinda like this, where it's not really graphic and more about atmosphere? (And also microbudgets.) And an interesting take on a zombie apocalypse; without spoiling too much, these aren't bite-you-and-you-catch-it zombies.

Suggestion: The Exorcist (1973) and The Exorcist III (1990) [Theatrical Version, the Directors cut is only good if you have already watch the Theatrical Version]. Don't bother with the other "The Exorcist" as they were not written by William Peter Blatty. I personally like 3 the most but each is a classic and unique in their own way.

There have been a bunch of games inspired by this movie. The first that springs to mind is The Simpsons: Bart vs Space mutants, which was heavily inspired by that whole sunglasses to see aliens thing. Not very good though. Duke nukem 3D as well, which was inspired by the attitude and took most of its one-liners from here.

Yeah there's sequels, it's called real life, can I get a witness people. Or just watch a longer version of this premise tv/movie 80's mini series "V" I think 80's maybe it was early 90's just search the Beastmaster lead cast guy cause he's the main lead in the series too.

I'd work with them! What can I say, I'm not cheap but I *can* be bought! Glad you liked it. It's interesting how many Carpenter films have a very slow first act, then go into overdrive and end before you know it. As was the case with Prince of Darkness, Carpenter wrote the screenplay under a pseudonym.
