Years ago, I was talking to a stranger at a dinner party and told him that I was going to write a book. Generally, that remark gets oooo's and ahhhhhh's from people. But this guy just said "And how long have you been planning to write this book?" I told him I'd been collecting information and ideas for the last 20 years, and he said "Forget it. You're obviously not going to write it." This shook me up enough to tickle my "I'll-show-you bone". I sent this man my first 4 published books. The next three I didn't bother. If he hadn't rattled my chain, I would probably still be just talking about it.😂😂

I used to be exactly the same, in fact I would spend ages making notes either about the idea or to try and think one up, and not actually do the work because I was too busy fine-tuning the ideas, or researching them. Once I started showing up at my desk every day (even if I was in a really flat mood and only felt capable of doing a quick scribble) I started to detach from that mindset gradually. I think it might be connected to perfectionism, as I just started doing a new thing of painting but allowing myself to do bad work, in fact encouraging myself to do bad work, and finally I feel like I'm getting some traction, and I can paint freely and enjoy it. Ideas are coming from the work I've done rather than from my thinking, which always resulted in disappointment as I would spend hours trying to have the perfect idea only to find when I started the project, it didn't work. So I think this video is bang on and I wish you lots of luck with trying out just showing up and doing something, it really works!

So true. I also believe the “muse” or “energy” or whatever you call it will find who’s working. There’s a crazy phenomenon on this (forget what it’s called) but there’s an example of two authors one of which didn’t act on an idea for a book, and their good friend and colleague who they connected with one a year or so, knowing nothing about the book idea, started writing that very book. Creativity wants expression. And doing the work is the way. ❤️

I agree about not needing the fancy materials. Many years ago I did a drawing for a friend of my mum. He was an Italian man who had come to the UK before the war. I was a bit embarrassed about the quality of the paper I had drawn on (we never had money so it was very rough paper). He told me, during the war he and his dad and brother were taken into an internment camp (because they were italian in the UK) and they used to draw on old newspapers. He said its not the materials, its what you do with them that makes them art.

Instead of doing my work (writing) I would just spend hours just browsing the web looking at the newest laptop or tablet or fountain pen that I KNEW would make my writing better. But in the end I would just get the shiny products, be full of dopamine for a month then plummet down to my baseline. I used to have this same attitude until I started timing myself and realized how powerful 5-10 minutes really could be. AND how much those minutes add up when they begin to compound. It’s why I stand firm in, “create something every day”. Doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, doesn’t have to be world changing, doesn’t even have to be finished. But greasing that creative groove is powerful. As a teacher, you give a lot. Try giving to yourself first. Maybe it’s 5 min sketch during your morning coffee. A little “you time” to fill your cup before you fill your students! ❤️

For me, showing up every day is about building a relationship with my inner artist, others may call this the muse or the diamon. We are in service to this source of creativity & imagination and we have to make sacrifices of our time & energy in dedication to this deity. If we commit to this relationship, hold a space to reach out, listen & trust it will lead us to who we actually are, what our art is about, to our authentic voice and style. Your ego, your mind, what you think isn’t your art, it is something deeper & showing up, being patient & developing a daily practice is the only way to have something that truly expresses your soul. And that is always more satisfying.

100% agree. Years ago when I started setting creating goals (3 peices a day) it escalated into 5 to 10 a day. I got obsessed. Was that work good? Not at all! But I've been consistent ever since and focus more on quality most days. But still to this day I sometimes have nothing to give. So I sit down and just copy something for the ritual. The ritual of creating and not focusing on perfection is as fun as those great pieces you are proud of. Create and create some more.

I have written a book consisting of stories, write-ups and my personal reflections on life and existence. You can call it a collection of my writings done over the years. It's available on Amazon. But now I am planning to bring out a revised edition, with some changes made, plus some new write-ups added. Once the new book is out, it will be available on Amazon, with its previous edition withdrawn from the site. I feel our lives are nothing without creativity. Everything else is just eat, shit and repeat. It's only creativity that has brought human civilization this far - be it artistic, scientific or any other form of creativity. Thanks a ton for this video. And keep making more such videos.

I resonate hard with this. I even told my friend I think around new years, “dang dude, I remember when I didn’t have a “PC” pc and I said I would edit videos if I had a stronger one, and now it’s literally about just doing it,” (bc I upgraded since) and man. So many excuses… I’ve also tried to fathom why I was able to produce more when I had less, because now that I have more I’ve produced less… I guess the hunger and will was stronger at the beginning, and I’m not as hungry for it now. BUT that will change :] Thank you for the video 💙

I can relate to you sooo so much. This I reduced my “clutter” of things (distracting tech) and reduced myself down to my 6th gen iPad Pro and have been insanely productive with less as a result. Art, KZfaq editing, email, etc. I’m a big proponent of less is more. Use what you have, even if that means getting rid of some of those things to “clear up the clutter”. Too much for me = analysis paralysis. My ADHD brain likes simple. 😂 Dive back in and make some cool things. Take it slow. Enjoy the process. Rooting for you ❤️

Thanks. Agreed with general idea. Just about the 'everyday' thing - isn't that a road to burnout? The people who can do that everyday might just be built different from someone like me..
@GinnyStLawrence
@GinnyStLawrence 28 күн бұрын
Depends on what your everyday looks like.. in this video I describe 5 minutes a day. That (to me) doesn’t lead to burnout. I brush my teeth every day, twice a day. Do I always want to? Not really. But it takes 5 minutes and I feel better afterwards. I think some people see “make art everyday” and it triggers them deeply. That’s not the intention of this video or my message. What I hope to leave people with is: go make something… work towards your creative expression everyday for at least 5 minutes a day. Simple doodle, cleaning brushes, etc. 5 minutes. Even if you sit there and draw circles over and over and over.. it’s 5 minutes.

I find myself in need of this reminder. I often find excuses to avoid creating art, whether it's doubting my abilities compared to others on social media or convincing myself that I need certain materials before I can start a project. However, I realize now that these are merely distractions. You're correct; everything I need to excel is already within me. It's up to me to take that first step. Additionally, I appreciate the analogy that five minutes of focused effort can yield as much as three hours of distracted work.

Same goes for dating. I think a lot of people don’t see that as a creative activity. When I was in that world, someone said, “Focus on the skill (development), not the outcome,” which is exactly what you’re saying here. Two years into my creative process. Perfectionism was the first roadblock. Therapist suggested I just start with what I have on hand. Learned I needed internal art in journals for personal development and that I need to shift between external art for others. Some of it is not meant to be seen, no performing, raw intuitive expression. Giving out little mini art watercolor squares with impactful sayings is so rewarding. I give them away random places like drive thru, drs office assistants. People are usually shocked! 😮 😊

Couldn't agree more. People will forget things when they stop doing those things. To become the success you strive to be, you have to do it until you are satisfied with it. To be is to do, and to do is to be, as Socrates once echoed. So don't lose yourself to the passage of time. Do something that you will be remembered for. I do not think Socrates would have ever guessed that over 2000 years later in history that someone would ever be able to acknowledge his own existence from his time. Let alone be viewed as a great figure. It is funny because he never believed in writing down any of his dialogues, but fondly his student Plato did. He etched the wisdom of Socrates to be recorded in the history of humanity for as long as it will go from here.

I don't have the know how or mental capacity of marketing to put my books into people's hands. (I'm autistic, it's a literal mental block so no, I can't just learn how to market. I've tried.) It's incredibly disheartening and I'm done writing books. 😢

Marketing is often about relatability and art is about emotional resonance too on the side of the consumer. Maybe you've put yourself in the wrong places and before people if you weren't received in a positive way? What are your books about? Who are they really for? Who can resonate with the stories? What can they learn from it? Who can benefit from what you have to give and how? These are important questions to ask, so you can focus on your particular niche instead of relying on some marketing "specialist" to bring in customers. Many of those "specialists or "art managers" will just take your money without delivering any results they promise and then even blame you for the results and call your art crap. Neurotypicals don't relate well with neurodivergent peole and their struggles, there is usually a clash in communication when they're forced to work together. Keep that in mind. It's better to build things up from scratch when you are personally engaged in the process, because you know your message best and you care about it most and you have to care about the people who become your first supporters too. You have to learn how to serve them best without compromising on your values, you have to discover that middle ground because no one else with care about it more and it has to be personal. You have to learn how to take feedback and how to ignore nonconstructive comments. You can call in advisors and other specialists when you are at the stage where you know your core products and when you have enough discernment to reject incompatible "help". Best of luck to you! May you find the best path to express yourself and relate to others! ;) PS: I believe the video was about creating art and expressing yourself, not as much about selling it - that's a different problem. Developing your skill vs monetizing it. You just admitted that you have everything you need to create your art, because you've already created it. Now you have to figure out who can receive it - that's the next level of the journey.
