D&D nerd here to elaborate that the movie was in a setting known as Forgotten Realms/Faerûn/Toril, which is the main setting for the current edition of the tabletop game (previously the default setting in the player's handbook was gygax's original world greyhawk, but most of the popular novels and video games i.e. baldur's gate have been in FR)

They got a hypnotist for our senior year one day and they had us try to do some things with our hands and then told us to pull them apart and the people who could were not chosen and the people who "couldn't" were. It was definitely like a pre-planned thing they had and those kids were the ones who would just do what he said pretending to be hypnotized, we all knew that but it was more of a comedy routine than actually trying to convince the seniors that they were actually hypnotized.

It does actually work on some people. I’ve faked it twice. Once in high school and once in college. I was the funny kid so I fully leaned into it. The main reason you know it works on some is because it’s VERY difficult to keep a straight face and not make eye contact with your friends in the audience. So people that it didn’t work on, you can figure out pretty quickly. You have to COMMIT to pretending to be hypnotized and be comfortable potentially embarrassing yourself and doing/saying things you normally wouldn’t. The one in college was a famous one that was on America’s Got Talent too. And they did like full on scenarios that involved us having to make certain poses and answer questions etc.

I’m sure this’ll be lost in the ether…but fuck it. The D&D movie is way more than just “passing references” to the RPG system; the entire setting of the Forgotten Realms was officially published in 1987 and was created even before then by D&D’s creator. It’s currently the most explored setting for 5th Edition D&D, with the vast majority of published adventures taking place on the Sword Coast, which is a greater geographical area that the movie used as its setting. The factions (The Harpers, The Emerald Enclave, Red Wizards of Thay, etc.) are also all well-established in FR lore; they’ve been around for decades in adventures, books, and even video games (Baldur’s Gate is a city in this setting!). Unique creatures created just for D&D back in the 70s (displacer beasts, intellect devourers) are also featured in the film. In short, Lud is slandering the movie as something less than a devoted love letter to D&D and I won’t stand for it 😡.

100% onboard with Aidan on the hypnotist shit. A guy used to come to my fair every year and do the exact same thing, like same methods exactly like he described it. My friend’s mom got picked out of the crowd to go on stage and she ended up being one of the biggest parts of the show. Problem was, my friend had a football game he had to get to and they only had 30 minutes before they needed to leave and she was on stage for an hour and a half. My dad ended up having to take my friend to his game and I stayed with his brother at the fair to get a ride to the game with them. His dad was pissed about it too and it started a big fight between his dad and mom. I don’t think it would work on me but I definitely think some people can be hypnotized because that shit was crazy. His mom flashed the entire county
