Harvard has canceled their men's soccer season after the team's online conversations became public. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Michael Shure, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/join
"The Harvard men's soccer team has been suspended for the remainder of the season after the school discovered the team had repeatedly written and circulated vulgar, sexually explicit "scouting reports" about new recruits on the women's team, in a practice that continued up to this year.
"The decision to cancel a season is serious and consequential," Harvard President Drew Faust said in a statement Thursday. She wrote that "both the team's behavior and the failure to be forthcoming when initially questioned are completely unacceptable, have no place at Harvard, and run counter to the mutual respect that is a core value of our community."
Men's soccer coach Pieter Lehrer said the team was "beyond disappointed" to see the season end this way, but would respect the decision.
"Actions have consequences, and character counts," Lehrer said in a statement. "We accept responsibility for our actions, and I know that we will use the experience of this terribly unfortunate situation to be better."
The suspension follows a story by The Harvard Crimson, the university's student newspaper, revealing that in 2012, the soccer team had circulated a "scouting report"on the new freshman recruits for the women's soccer team.
The document - which appeared to be part of an annual tradition - described the female players in graphic, frequently degrading terms. It ranked their attractiveness with numerical values, assigned them sexual positions, theorized about their sexual behavior and described their physical attributes in terms that were variously crude and insulting.
After that story, Harvard ordered a review of the team's behavior. The review found that the "scouting report" was, indeed, a tradition.”*

it's not the judging part that is the problem. if it was private emails, no problem. but putting it in a google doc open to EVERYONE at the school (or the entire internet, not sure which), makes it wrong. the problem is putting it in the public sphere. call it defamation, call it emotional distress...they can and should be sued for it. if i was one of those women, i wouldnt feel safe around those guys anymore. why should i share a campus with them?

I'm with Cenk with this - this was meant to be private and was not used to intimidate. I'm a bit of a prudish girl but the whole while that Ana was setting up the story, I kept thinking - as coarse and demeaning their rating system was, isn't there freedom of speech in this country? Since, this did come out because they weren't careful enough, maybe they should be required to take a sensitivity training course, or, at least, a course about internet privacy - but, not take away their whole season.

There is freedom of speech in the country but not in a private school. Harvard has the right to create whatever environment they want. For example, Harvard is never going to purposefully admit a nazi. But if they found out a group of students identified as nazis, they could kick those students out. Beyond that point, I agree with you.

Melanoma Trump Sargon rose to nearly 1/6 of TYT's subscriber count with barely a push for funds and he did it in less time. Also, his livestreams (he has a separate channel for this) garners anywhere from 500 to 4000 viewers at a time depending on the subject and/or who's on with him. When I used to watch TYT livestreams, they barely broke 400 for regular viewing. I'm jealous that one individual can do that on their own work never mind piggy backing professionals.

I hope women realize that we as men and you as women can have the feelings and fantasies you have and talk about them however you want, liberals are supposed to be about free speech. You know Podesta is having Spirit Dinners and HRC Foundation donated 10,000 to the occultist Abramovic in wikileaks, where she writes lewd sexual masochistic things on the wall with blood, yet this behavior is acceptable and crass language between guys isnt (I would say both are acceptable intellectually and morally as well as legally, its called LIBERALISM (FREEDOM TO __))? This is why we are voting Trump among millions of other reasons. Democrats have gone too far (and this is what the right has been calling the inertia of Political Correctness "thought-policing") and they will not see anyone that is perceived as "the dominate X" whether male, white, straight, you name it, as having the same rights that we accept they have. Cenks right, girls, the thought police is NOT something anyone should be supporting, including anyone here. We can fantasize about whatever we want, even if we are straight white males, and you should be celebrating our creativity if you actually appreciate respecting other people's creative sexuality however they want, so long as they don't actually commit a crime. I voted Bernie but I'm voting Trump because you are oppressive authoritarian thought police (democrats) in today's world, and while trump isn't a whole lot better, he's a hell of a lot better than Hillary.

StrictlybizB There WOULD be public outcry if the women's soccer team committed these thoughts to paper and shared them. They'd get in some kind of trouble. And some brand of feminists would seek to exonerate them. Not I. Wondering about another person's sexual endowments or appetite are one thing. Making a discussion of those private matters with others is another. Documenting your thoughts and sharing them with your sports team...that's still two levels deeper. And now it's sexual harrassment.

Reverse the roles; what if an all female team rated male freshman according to physical attractiveness? I don't think it's a big deal as long as no one gets hurt. The only odd thing is that making lists like this of your classmates is a little too 7th grade.
@o0Theresa0o
@o0Theresa0o 7 жыл бұрын
It isn't only about rating them on their physical attractiveness (although that's pretty fucking shitty in and of itself). But it wouldn't be the same if the roles were reversed, for a number of reasons. 1. Men have not been raised in a culture that have told them their value is inherently linked to their physical attractiveness, or their 'fuckability'. 2. Men have not spent lifetimes trying to overcome these value judgments, trying to prove that they are in fact more than their attractiveness. 3. Men are not in imminent danger of women sexually abusing, harassing, assaulting, raping, or discriminating against them. You cannot look at this devoid of the social constructs that surround it.

The genders will be forever divided on this in my opinion. Guys know how crass and moronic "we" can be especially when it comes to topics involving women, which is why Cenk & Michael mostly agree its locker room talk. In relation to Ana's point & women in general, they too can be crass and of course rate men but they in most cases don't take it as far as men. The problem for me is when the language becomes more than vapid speech and becomes something that is published. Once the soccer team put this online they effectively published the hot or not doc & opened themselves up to this possibility. Nothing is really private online and so it was almost inevitable this would happen. For that reason I actually agree with the soccer ban but make no mistakes this kind of thing will continue so long as there are males and females and we will never see eye to eye on this matter completely.

I think the dividing line come downs to have you ever felt objectified to a point that your felt powerless and unsafe. Have you experienced being viewed as nothing more than object for the sexual pleasure for another and had to think up scenarios for how to get out of situations so that you don't get hurt. Have you ever felt scared for your well being when your 'No thank you' or ' I'm not interested' is not accepted? If you have been made to feel this way, then those crass words cause a visceral reaction and I can not think of another woman that I know that has not felt that way. I am willing to assume a much smaller number have men have felt that way.

I understand where they both are coming from but I have to agree with Ana on this. Cenk's opinion is that they didn't intend for this to get out so they shouldn't face punishment. I fully understand that it's just REAL locker room talk but their intent doesn't matter. It got out. Somebody has to face consequences. If the school doesn't act on it then it will make the whole school look as if they welcome that kind of behavior. Now women will look at that school and will question whether or not they will be welcome there. People who graduated from that school may be affected by it. Here's an example. If John was in a back room saying racist, sexist or homophobic things, you can say that's between him and whoever he's talking to. If that conversation got out through audio or video then John would have to answer to the leaked conversation. Regardless of what John would say about it, that event would reflect on TYT itself. Therefore something SHOULD happen. Simply saying what happened was inappropriate is one option but would do very little to convince anyone. IfJohn was reprimanded, that would convey more strongly that TYT doesn't support that kind of behavior. Call it what you will. Their intent doesn't matter. It happened and now they all look like sexist idiots.

Women in North America have a 1 in 5 chance of getting raped in their lifetime (according to the CDC - Stats Canada says 1 in 4). Treating sexual objectification in academic and work-related topics/settings as being no big deal normalizes the view that a woman's main purpose is to be sexually gratifying to men. They were conversing about an athlete's abilities based on their sexual appeal - and through an academic forum, not in a private facebook chat among buddies. That detail makes a difference.

As a WOMAN, I honestly agree with Cenk here. Ana honestly needs to calm down. In America you have a right to free speech. As long as your speech isn't a dangerous threat, libel, slander, etc. You have a right to be an asshole. Its not illegal to say nasty shit. Would I like guys saying that about me when I go off to college? No, I wouldn't LIKE it. But whatever, as long as your words don't turn into actions. You have the right to say dumb shit behind closed doors. This conversation was meant to be private. If the men were doing this stuff explicitly out in public and telling the girls what their rank is, their position, etc. then that's sexual harassment, bullying and such. But that's not what this was. I'm a woman, I wouldn't even date to pretend like I and other girls don't objectify men. Admittedly, not to this degree but still. I mean this stuff is so human and not directly hurting anyone. Like goodness gracious get off your high horses people and cast the first stone. Ana kind of sounds like one of those crazy moms/ 3rd wave feminists here tbh.

I can see where they're both coming from. But I kind of see it as an issue of intent. If you purposely run into someone's mailbox with your car, that's like vandalism and possibly intimidation. If you accidentally do it, that's like reckless driving. Not as bad, but bad nonetheless. These young men thoughtlessly made a document open to the public that would shame young women at that school. Not as bad as purposely doing it, but, I think, bad nonetheless.

Anytime a man finds a women attractive or rates her he is objectifying her. This is why we need feminism. This is the definition of rape culture. Men shouldn't be looking at women and being attracted to them even in relationships. Every time a man wants to have sex with his girlfriend or finds his girlfriend attractive he is sexually objectifying her. Women ofcourse don't do this. Feminism is needed much more then ever now.

I played Div1 hockey for a major university that also had a ladies Div 1 hockey program. Our coach demanded not only do we treat the ladies with respect they should be like your sister. We protected them supported them and celebrated with them when they won the title. Most schools athletic directors are worthless they hire coaches and recruit players for winning not to be gentlemen or scholars.

One important thing they didn't really talk about is if the crime meets the punishment. Because I agree with both sides. I agree that it was locker room talk and not meant to be public, but the fact of the matter is it IS public now. And that's their fault, and they should accept responsibility for making that mistake. All the women involved are now affected by this document. BUT I think the crime was WAYYY over reacting. Maybe you find out who was involved and suspend them 1 game or something, but the whole season? C'mon...

I am reacting to Cenk's defense of this document. In a sense, the discovery of this document being publicly available is the same as posting the names and addresses of people who voted for stricter gun controls in New York City--there's no actual crime in that, is there? While the posting of those names and addresses was not accompanied by recommendations of violence or retaliation, the implication was clear. The publication of this document--even if it was unintentional--has the same nature associated with it. The recommendation of official actions based on the information contained in it was IMPLIED and therefore criminally valid. That's why I am glad that the reporter at the school paper published it in the newspaper! So that everyone who reads that newspaper will know that every official decision they make about the students named in it will be tainted by that information. Also, in criticism of Cenk's closing comment, "in jest", it creates a hostile environment which constitutes an act of Sexual Harassment, and cannot be considered accidental because it has been done year after year--it is a systemic behavior that must be described as "tolerated by the administration" (because it's an annual thing), and therefore becomes a massive black eye for the school itself.

I'm not sure that canceling a soccer season is the end of the world. What the young men did wrong was to give the university a black eye by posting sexually derogatory remarks about other students on not just a public forum, but one connected to the school. I could be wrong, but I imagine the school has some kind of code about what is acceptable use and what isn't. What the students do on their own time is one thing, but when they're getting the school involved, then the school has to act to protect their brand. Now, I think further investigation should have been done and just the ringleaders should have been made to miss a few games, as I seriously doubt the entire team was involved in posting the list. But still, I think the school is within its rights to decide how its public communication resources can be used. I would say the same thing about any school, not just Harvard.

I agree with Ana. It is OK to evaluate another person's appearance but the language used to express that evaluation should not be mean spirited or degrading especially if it is written down. The cancellation of the season seems extreme but it is just a game, not very important in the larger scheme and they faced no legal or academic penalty.

I'm somewhere in the middle on this issue. I think the players have the right to say what they want as long as it's not harassment or making a threat, but I also think think that Harvard has the right to hand down punishment. The document was public, whether it was meant to be or not doesn't matter. It reflects badly on the university and Harvard has the right to hold its students to a certain standard and hand down reasonable punishment.

I'm with Ana on this, there's a big difference between talking to your friends in private about how attractive you find someone versus having a documented rating system to share with your organization or club, regardless of whether that system is semi-private. There is a mindset that reduces the value of a person to zero once the criteria is based solely on physical appearance.

So chenk thinks this is the standard we should hold our men to? how about we teach our young men and women to build up one another rather than talking about each other as nothing more than meat for pleasure? Talking about whether someone is hot or not is nowhere near saying what sexual position they're worthy of chenk.

What's so bad about a meat for pleasure? That's arguably the most important thing humans have to do (procreate). Why is it not objectification when we say someone is smart? Aren't we reducing that person to nothing more than someone who could do our homework? Why sexual objectification worse than any other type of objectification?

Cenk, you are totally wrong. That's like arguing that if a person in a company sexually harrasses someone in a different department, that would be fine. It wouldn't. If the guys had been simply talking amongst themselves, it would have just been really stupid. As soon as they document it and put it online, it's sexual harrassment. They should definitely be punished.

Ok, Cenk, here's an important distinction that no one really talked about: it was in a Google Doc. The fact that they put it into a Google Doc means that they intended it to be something more permanent. It makes it seem more fetishistic and less "locker room talk." Now I'm not saying that the guys read the Doc for the purposes of titillation, how can we possibly know? But like you said about Bill Cosby during the Rolling Stone, it weighs on your mind. It makes it look worse because it's something that was clearly intended to be engaged with again and again, for titillation, or just discussion and updates. I don't know that they deserved to receive the punishment they got; I honestly haven't considered how this rates on the punishment scale, but I think the distinction is important.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Cenk. But I give praise when it's due. Cheers Cenk! I can't count the amount of times I've seen male actors being interviewed by a woman. And the woman makes the man take off his shirt and then start touching his abs and chest. If a man even tried that, the police would be called. Such a double standard. But guys don't give a shit.
