"Does promoting marriage and motherhood inevitably make women easy targets for subordinate status, increased vulnerability, and a return to second-class status? One of the very first columns I wrote at UnHerd, back in 2019, described how, for me, becoming a mum meant giving up on a great deal of the liberal ideology I’d embraced when younger - because it was impossible to square with the embodied reality of caring for a baby. A relatively conventional home life turned out to be much more fulfilling than the radical one I’d adopted with my progressive politics.
My accounts of questioning this individualistic ideology, and embracing marriage and motherhood have resonated with social conservatives. Most of these, it goes without saying, feel (as I do) that family life and women’s distinctive sexed realities should be better understood and valued in the public conversation. Some, though, take more hardline positions: that women should never work, for example, that we should always be submissive - or even that women’s right to vote should be repealed."

As an university-educated woman I find this TRAD BS disgusting. Now she is divorced while I have been married to the same man, after two kids, both of us having had a military career, now we are retired and still together. WE REMAIN IN LOVE. I was NEVER submissive. I RULE MY HOUSE as a WIFE SHOULD. This trad BS, is CONTRARY TO HISTORICAL TRUTH where hubby went off to war and his WIFE help the reins of his estate. @@UnclePumblechook Typically, not always, women are much better at perception and social cues so that is why women were in charge of the house and society. @@SonicBoomC98 I really wish it were so. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I’ve been a part of a religious cult when I was young that had expectations of women to submit. I became a teen mom. Very few men are kind, faithful, protective providers. I wanted nothing more than to be free to stay home and focus on raising my child, but I had to leave and work two jobs and put my child into childcare, which I didn’t want to have to do. Because most men abuse the position of dominance and lie, cheat, womanize and beat their wives. I’ve also researched my family history and my great grandmother and grandfather were Orthodox Jews. She never learned to read and he beat her - and that was just the way it was for most women back then. Pop out children till they died in childbirth- and then the men remarried a young woman and she popped out more children and so on and so on. Women were second class citizens with no rights, no opportunity for self determination and nowhere to go when they were abused. And that’s what religious extremists want us to go back to. It depends on what you mean by "judging" them. If you recognize that it is harmful to them, their children, and many other people in their lives, that's not so much judging as it is an accurate assessment of the situation. If you recognize they have problems with self-respect, boundaries, standing up for themselves, it's not judging, it's a description of what they are doing and why they aren't getting out. I used to think it was always wrong to "judge" until I recognized that judgment also means, by definition, the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.

The only time a traditional dynamic works is if the woman **wants** to do it, not because it is some romanticised ideal, but because it is what she truly wants and is fulfilled by it, and understands that it is challenging and most of the time, a 24/7 chore.... and, more importantly.... it only works if the man is mature enough, has integrity, and doesn't just want a stay-at-home trophy wife, but understands that the role is just as demanding, stressful, and difficult as whatever corporate or blue-collar job he has. It only works if he wants to provide and is willing to sacrifice to do so and understands that he can clock out of work and relax for the rest of the evening. His wife, who has likely started her day before him.... will still be on the clock after he is in bed, especially if young children are present.

Yes. Because both partners are communicating, meeting one another's needs and desires, and willing to be flexible. Everyone has to pull their own weight and work together, not essentially stop being a person. I am a traditional wife with a traditional husband. When we got married, I wanted to be at home and he wanted to work. However, we live in NYC, one of the most expensive city in the world, so we both had to work to survive. Husband and wife are a unit. You change as your environment changes. You deal with life as life goes on. From a traditional wife, I had to become a working wife and a working mom. From a traditional husband, he had to become a working house husband and a working dad. Life does not have written-in-stone type things. You change as your situation changes. A traditional husband and wife do everything in their power to keep the unit going. The unit needs love, respect, and mutual goals to work toward.

Singapore is the most expensive city in the world, closely followed by Zurich. It's searchable but I know personally that this is the case. Ask me how I know? Us Brits are an awfully well traveled bunch, I've worked in both in investments (high level short and long term), lived in both cities, as well as NYC and Texas for a time, and the cost to live in both Singapore and Zurich will make a New Yorker's eyes water and their wallet melt. I'm originally from Chelsea Kensington, London, where an average apartment goes for £2,000,000 (about $3,200,000 of your US dollars) and it certainly made my eyes water. Being a single mom is child abuse
@acausevic1

Well who picked the said loser and spread her legs for the loser who made her a single mom? The single mother did so what does that make her then? You have no choice but to be single at that point because there isn’t a line of men waiting up to wire up a childless woman today yet alone a single mother.

They should introduce a class on narcissism in college to educate young women because it is becoming very clear that half the world is made up of narcissists.Of course narcissists come in all forms in both sexes.

Sounds like a very young lady that choose to disregard the life lessions of the older women that came before her. When us older women try to break down the game so you wont get played, we are trying to save you years of your life that you cant get back....unfortunately she found out the hard way.

Yep...when you live in Australia and meet young people, there is this pattern of many young women are dreaming of the far right traditional princess life..then in their old age, they realise, the men finish their Friday night at the strip club, when they take care of the kids... I have worked in many different industries, and heard the same stories... Sadly.

She has years of rehab and awakening before I feel bad for her. She said awful things and hurt people. She led others to be awful and do awful things. I haven't heard her say she was hit, beaten, raped. But that is the reality for plenty of these trad wife households. She promoted this.

Huh? You don't think he abused her? Is there a hierarchy of abuse in your eyes? SHE needs years of rehab and awakening? Sounds a bit elitist... Does everyone need to spend money on years of rehab for you to feel bad for them? Sounds quite expensive. All in all, this woman sounds like she was brainwashed. I can't say she is a good person. It's clear her influence was awful, and is awful. However, abuse is not just getting beat, hit and raped. Just because she hasn't said those things doesn't mean they hadn't happened either. Perhaps there are legal reasons she feels like she can't. If anything I am just happy a survivor has come forward with their story and admitted they were wrong about a lifestyle they promoted Yes, it won't undo the past. But it was better she did this than stay silent about it. I don't know her current political ideology and I don't know her content, but change is a positive thing.

@avaguerr I didn't say they didn't happen. Or would you like to quote me where I did? I didn't say she wasn't abused either. However, she never said she was physically abused. Many women who are in this type of relationship are subject to what she want through and extra. She promoted this and she excused it.
