I already have a few videos on replacing the timing belt on a VG30e engine, however I wanted to go a bit more in depth and show the process in its entirety. Hopefully this video gives a great description of what needs to be done to complete your timing belt replacement.
Also check out the XenonZCar article here: www.xenonzcar.c...
Check out our website: thezgarage.net
I am not a professional mechanic and the methods described in my videos are solely based on my research and intuition. I make mistakes and when I do, I try to point them out so others don't make the same mistakes. These videos are meant only as a description of what I was trying to do and how I went about doing it. Before attempting any service on your car, conduct your own research and use common sense.

Hey is your R3 and L3 gear on the wrong side
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 5 ай бұрын
Edit: this is wrong, see my next comment. Those stamps are for the right and left cam when you are looking at the engine from the front. So the R3 gear goes on the driver's side cam, and the L3 goes on the passenger side cam

I believe I saw your comment on the Facebook groups, but I wanted to document for anyone else reading, that I do infact have the cam gears on the wrong side. The fsm specifies the R marked cam gear on the passenger side cam and the L on the driver's side cam, opposite to what I show in my video. I'm not sure if it makes a difference because my engine seemed to be running fine, but I want to make sure everyone is aware of the proper way to do it.

Great video, lots of great information here! Just a note, gates kits have been known to fail at a lower mileage mark as of late due to changes in the manufacturing process, best choice for most Japanese makes at this point are the Aisin kits I had 2 gates tensioners fail within 10k miles doing subaru 2.5 timing on different occassions, both times remedied with Aisin kits, the gates racing belt may still be a good choice but I wouldnt trust anything with a bearing involved. Just my .02

Thanks for the video. I wanted to point out though that spinning the engine backwards will not effect bearings. The tangs dont hold the bearing from spinning with the crank journal. A good bearing sits tight in the saddle and stays pressed against the main caps. The only time a bearing spins is after its worn and over heated which breaks it down and causes it to shrink. Once it shrinks it will lose its spring/crush that it has against the other half of the bearing and the oil clearances will tighten up. Then the bearing will ride dry on the crank journal causing it to spin with the crank.
@MichaelWysocki-ks5xt
@MichaelWysocki-ks5xt 5 ай бұрын
About the only way a bearing ‘ spins ‘ in the rod or main is if it sticks to the crankshaft from losing its oil film separation, either due to extreme stress or running out of oil pressure or, in a case I observed, from sitting too long without running to where all the oil film runs of and the dry bearing ‘ adheres ‘ to the crankshaft and gets spun in the first attempt to crank it over and try starting it. The one I observed was discovered after running the engine only a few minutes and then disassembling. If I continued to operate it and use it the bearing would have seriously failed. I think of it every time I see “ hasn’t run in 50 years, will it start ? “

nice video. when doing timing belt tension. put somethin straight edged on top of both cam gears and when you put presser on the belt directly in the middle of the cam gear .it should dip below the straight edge approximately 1/4 to 3/8. a little bet then the twist method.

Thanks for this video, my Y30 cedric has vg30e too. Is it really nessecary to pull the harmonic balancer off? just asking beforehand, i dont have any pullers and the engine is in the car, also would it be ok to cranck the engine by hand to time the camsaft points to the cam gears before taking the harmonic balancer off? like time the engine before hand and then pull the balancer off?

Unfortunately you do have to remove the balancer to get the lower cover off. As long as you're careful you won't mess up the timing so it shouldn't be too big of an issue

XenonZCar.com has a list of common issues and fixes. It's a great reference and I highly suggest reading up on all the articles he has! Personally, the CHTS and MAF typically give you the most issues. Replace the CHTS and clean your MAF and hope it doesn't go bad because it's kinda hard to find a good working one. Other than that these are pretty reliable cars in my opinion as long as the previous owner took decent care of it.

Hey, so hopefully someone can help me out here cuz I'm obviously doing something wrong here (yes this is my first time doing a timing job, got the car as a project car to learn) so everything is at TDC, the marking on the crank and cams are on the corresponding dots and aligned, but the moment I put the belt back on and I try to manually turn over the engine to make sure everything is good, once everything turns over 1 revolution (on the crankshaft) the entire thing stops, I can no longer turn it over, I turn counterclockwise and at another revolution again... It stops and can't turn any further, I believe a valve is hitting a piston but I'm not sure why If everything was at TDC and aligned with the markings when I put the belt back on. Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

So, doing timing on my 85 turbo, all sprockets are marked for TDC, but I took belt and all sprockets off before I lined them up. Can I just turn them to the marks and it will be fine?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
Yeah as long as you're not spinning things over so fast you can bend something you should be good. Just don't force something if it doesn't go. Move to another piece and come back to it

What would happen if I cranked the crank shaft about 3-4 times past TDC, and then drove the car? Im redoing the timing job because the car wont accelerate very much. Should I crank the crank shaft backwards to avoid going any further past TDC?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
You can go backwards just try to minimize the amount you do it. As long as all the marks are lined up properly and you have the correct teeth count between each of the marks then the engine is in time. If it's set up properly and you're still having issues, you need to look elsewhere

Hey I have a quick question that I'm not 100% sure about. It's my valve cover gasket do I need to apply rtv to the gasket or not? I want to do it right the first time and not take everything apart after I put it all together. Thanks in advance.
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
I've never heard of needing to apply rtv to these valve covers so you should be good to go with just the gasket. But make sure you replace the grommets for the bolts because those can leak too

Can you describe turning the engine over to get the slack on the tensioner side? I’m having a lot of trouble getting the tension right, it’ll go loose then tight as I roll it over but I don’t know how to make it consistent
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
If you are turning it over clockwise and have 40 and 43 teeth between the marks, when you get to TDC there should be tension on the cylinder 1 cam pulling the tension out of the right side and keeping it on the tensioner side. Double check the teeth count and then do tension adjustments at TDC
@marcodowns2704
@marcodowns2704 Жыл бұрын
@@TheZGarage so tension should only be checked at TDC on cylinder 1?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
It can be checked elsewhere, but if you check it at TDC then you know the slack will all be on the tensioner side
@marcodowns2704
@marcodowns2704 Жыл бұрын
@@TheZGarage should the tension be consistent over an entire revolution of the cams? As I turn the motor over the tension changes but when I get back to TDC on 1 it’s the same as I set it. For example right before TDC it’s tighter than I set it but as I roll it to TDC it loosens a little and feels good.
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Жыл бұрын
It should be fairly constant but it will vary slightly through a rotation. As long as it doesn't change after you set it, it should be fine

I would not recommend the socket between the crankshaft bolt and the sprocket technique. I just stripped my crankshaft bolt because it was trying to spin the whole engine on like 3 threads. New bolt is ordered, so no big loss, but be warned.
