Thick is better! Sheleeart blooms technique consistency test

The thickness of your colored paints in the Sheleeart blooms technique makes a huge difference in how well your blooms form and how they keep their shape.
By having a slightly thicker mixture will keep you from blowing through the mixture in to the base paint and will also allow your cells and lacing to remain mostly intact even when tilting or spinning out your bloom.
In this experiment we compare my regular mixture, with a slightly thicker, and slightly thinner version. Interestingly enough I think I am going to have to start making my paints thicker. It worked so much better based on this test.

I have been learning lots from your videos and have been doing a lot of experimenting, I have been using random leftover paint for my pillow layer just to experiment, however I was gonna go and purchase a new gallon of paint, I have a few paint suppliers I can get a discount at here in Canada so I am wondering if there is any specific properties in the pillow paint I should be looking for aside from just seeking an untinted Interior latex paint. It seems a lot of people use the Behr 8300 or Gliddens premium which I could get from Home Depot here however... Just not sure if I should be using those or if it might be safe to experiment with a different brand. Thanks for any advice.
@LeftBrainedArtist

Behr 8300 is used for the paint mixture NOT for the base as it is an untinted deep base. Have you taken the SheleeArt blooms course by chance? They have a some awesome PDFs with suggestions for paints in all different areas.

I’ve been trying for weeks now to do a bloom … I’ve tried everything I’ve tried the hairdryer I’ve tried different size stores I’ve tried the heat gun I’ve tried the vacuum cleaner LOL I haven’t been successful but I’ll keep trying… But you know what I’m really messing up on other than the hairdryer the sides of my canvases are a mess it’s not the paint as much as it’s the sealing of it I seem to get a lot of drips I get chips all over the place and then by the time I get there to clean it up it’s already dried so you really can’t hang any of my canvases without a frame…. Can you do a video on how to make our edges more appealing and keep doing the videos on the blooms I’ll get there it’s just gonna take me a while… Although I can really imitate French bread pizza pretty good LOL👍✌️🤟

What is a "Cell activator"? And how do you make it?
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
It is the paint you put on the top of the other paints in the Sheleeart Bloom Technique. You blow or swipe this paint over the others to get the gorgeous cells and lacing. There are a ton of different ways to make it. My cost effective way is explained in my videos here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7dhgKaEl9islWQ.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7-If5imms_PnZc.html

Ok, from another one of your videos I watched this morning… I don’t know if you remember my asking about pouring on plexiglass. It wouldn’t work as far as actual reverse glass or plexiglass painting goes, bc with that you work your lights first. BUT, I felt wowed, when I saw that the colors on the bottom of the glass on your video. I would have loved to have seen you spike all of that, maybe digging down to pull around those bottom colors. And what would happen if some activator was put down first? Does it take air to get cells? I guess so, but what happens when you dig down onto the plexi? Gosh, I hope I make sense!
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
The pillow paint in this case is really only a mode of transpiration and to give a little bounce to the colors. If you blow all the way down to the surface you'll get that pillow showing through which is most cases is not a good look. Ideally you are blowing the cell activator into and over the other paints but not breaking the bottom surface of the bottom most paints.

Thank you for another great tutorial David! Interestingly I accidentally used a bit thicker paint one day on a bloom and found it worked, so you have reinforced my ‘accident’ is okay. Can I just check what you said about your cell activator? You used titanium white from Amsterdam and a glue mix? Is that a glue and water mix, I’m guessing? Apology if I may have missed a video on this and not written it down. 🧑🏻‍🎨🎨⚗️🔬

When the glue dries does it dull the micas?

Yes. So do most acrylic paints since they dry more matte than they look wet. You almost always needs a finish to make them really pop again.

I have a question I've been doing tiles and wood rounds doing the Sheelee blooms but when they dry on the tile not the wood it seems that I have like what you said separations but like I said only on the tile not the wood. So do you know why this would be? I used paint and flotrol and my pillow was same as yours.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
My best guess would be that wood absorbs some of the evaporation and tile doesn't. So if the paint is too thick the top dries first and then underneath dries and pulls apart the dried top layer causing cracking and crazing.
