I was lent another L3 by Antdroid, and guess what? It sounded significantly different from the first loaner in this video - like, pretty OK! Both the timbre and treble extension issue were mostly attenuated, so I’m not really sure what to say. On one hand, it is a decent IEM, but on the other hand, it clearly suffers from quality control issues.

This was really good, my friend. Keep doing what you're doing. So many reviewers love to hear themselves talk and can't get to the point. But this your style is direct, efficient, and informative. I'll keep watching!

Hey. Nice articulated review. The thing is, you also own 2 of the best IEM’s ever created: U12t (which I have owned) and Z1R. So you have already reached the summit. Just like BGGAR and even Zeos, you kinda have to turn off what you know of those two as everything else will sound off comparatively speaking. The L3 are not the most articulate or detailed but they are the musical iem of the voyager series and they pulled that off. You have solid points no doubt, but calling it sh&$ is a little harsh because they really are not even close to that. They are fun and will play music very well for around $100. Not a bad buy all things considered.

Yeah, my expectations are no doubt skewed, and I have high standards in general. Just tough to recommend L3 when something like the Moondrop Starfield and the Tin HiFi stuff is in the mix, but L3’s fine for the price.

Looking to get a single mid-price IEM in the next few weeks, something like the Fearless S8Z, Legacy 9, or maybe their new EST range. I just want something that makes me smile and sounds a bit different to my regular headphones. I like a bit of bass, but want it to be taut and fast. I wonder if I should steer clear of DD low end IEMs. The Moondrop S8 was on my list, but I hear it's not ported, so could get a bit tiring?
@Precogvision4 жыл бұрын
If you want a faster low-end, BA is probably the way to go. S8Z is one of the most aggressive, quick IEMs on that list, so maybe something to consider? L9 has a fairly slow decay to the bass. S8 is very well-tuned and technical, but not a bassy IEM. I don’t recommend snagging their EST yet until some reviews come out. Hope this helps!

Based on my experience the Legacy 4 sounds pretty solid for its price range. Thanks for your explained description of L3 and L9.

I love your channel, and have gotten some great recommendations from you. I wanted to let you know that I also had a horrendous listening experience with the Thieaudio Legacy 5’s. Out of the box with the most comfortable ear tips they sounded thin and very “tin canny”, so I figured I would see if they would break in- although they were so bad ai did not have high hopes. I tried some of the larger, then even the largest sponge ear pieces, which made the bass a bit better, but still sounded maybe 2/10 for even a $50 IEM (which they aren’t). I tried them on my Questyle QP2R, my IFI Diablo and my Chord Mojo with various gain and related settings. Still totally sucked. I. Ould hear more clearly that there was a plastic/metallic attack on things between 1K-2K- although that was just one of many issues with them. I listen on a range of headphones and IEM’s, from ATH-50’s to Abyss 1266 Phi TC’s, and Tin-2’s and Starfield’s to 64 Audio 18T’s. The Thieaudio Legacy 5 did not even come close to my Moondrop Starfield’s or TIN-2’s, so I thought I’d ask you and other’s here if you had any input. In the absence of a solution, they are going back with a 1-star rating for sure.

Will you do a review on the galaxy bus plus? From crinacle website they share a very similar frequency response to the starfield and specifically to the tanchjim oxygen but with more sub bass.

Could you help explain what S-ranking means. I’m pretty new to iems. Just recently bought KZ ZS10 Pro and BLON BL03.

Hi, some people like to rank IEMs on a tier list, it generally goes from S to F with S being the best there is. It’s totally subjective/personal.

Despite the specialized terminology, this is the most informative IEM review I have ever heard. And I habitually watch them all, lol. It's like wine tasting for dudes. Though Burn in doesn't seem to affect IEMs so much, I've definitelly experienced them in headphones. DDs & Planars. What it sounds like, is that it feels like the two drivers are separate sound sources, since they are 'stiff', for lack of a better term. My Oppo PM-2s may have been in my head, but my B & W PXs, definitelly sounded different out of the box, and in both cases people described the exact same thing as me.

Nice review and thanks for your honest opinions. After watching your video, I ran through all my IEMs I currently own, including the Legacy 3, and ended up really enjoying the Legacy 3 with my music. I'm running it on the detailed settings (the default dip switch settings are VERY dull) I agree the Legacy 3 is not that detailed. I am very treble sensitive, so the "laid back" nature of the Legacy 3 is up my alley. The frequency response on the Legacy 3 just sounds so good. My Starfield sounds great but is more V shaped and lacking some mid energy the L3 has (still an awesome set tho). I listen to a lot of prog metal and this set does a great job with my music and my sound tastes, but I see your points about this set. I think it boils down to personal preference and what we all expect our music to sound like in our head. I'll probably end up with the L9 per your comments vs the L3.
@Assimilator7024 жыл бұрын
msteele0 I wouldn’t describe the Starfield as V shaped. Maybe a slight L. Not a V.
@msteele04 жыл бұрын
@@Assimilator702 Hey Joe, my Legacy 3 has much more midrange focus than the Starfield. The Starfield sounds very good but thinner maybe more analytical vs the Legacy 3. The Legacy 3 is Thick and heavy in comparison.

I cannot choose between the L3 and the Starfield, i listen 80% of the time electronic music and when i see the graphs with the comparison tool of Crinnacle it shows that the bass is much less powerfeel then the L3
@Precogvision4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a tough one mate. Starfield is a better all-arounder, but I can see L3 being more exciting if you're listening to EDM specifically.
@davegorthuis64294 жыл бұрын
Precogvision i also listen some other genres like pop, bit of rock sometimes. But most of the time EDM, i currently own the BLON 03 and i like the sound signature especially considering the price, but i want something with that same punch or more in the lows, so it has to be an upgrade of that model more or less.

@@davegorthuis6429 The Starfield sound like Neumann NDH20 with only a few differences headphones NO other opinion allowed. I try to describe it. The Mids are neutral (voices mainly) but get the Sennheiser quality - it doesm't sound dead for monitoring purpose. Highs sparkle more than NDH20 but are rolled off because there are 3 drivers inside the IEM. The Bass sounds real BUT it is more foreward like in a cinema which means it gives goosebumps in films like James Bond but it can be too much. NDH20 are only rumbling when bass is in the song. It seems like the Bass is still only showing up when things should have bass so that it is not like audio technica e70 where bass gets added where no bass can be heard. The sound NDH20 hate acustic guitars and violins. The Starfield also get the Sennheiser 600 series livelyness so all in all everything sounds great after 3-5 days of medium to loud listening (no burn-in seperatly needed), the tonality is lifelike ( I am a total noob when it comes to real life knowledge how instruments should sound) except the Film-like-bass. I am currently waiting for custom L3 to be made.

You're not wrong about your description of L3. The bass is the best part of the L3, the mids aren't as cohesive as they could be, and the treble is typical of cheap-BA treble. But, what are a few IEMs that are better that cost less? There aren't a lot many. Seems unfair to go so far to call them bad and not offer some good use cases for them.
@Precogvision4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I go in-depth a lot more in my written review! Moondrop Starfield is a prime example, and I think some of the Tin stuff is probably better or on par. Some have also mentioned that it works better with specific genres that I don’t normally listen to. For me though, much of the value would actually be predicated on the CIEM version; there are very few CIEMs with a decent tuning and at such a compelling price. See here: precogvision.com/?p=2298

Ultimately, the best way to find out is to listen yourself because everyone hears things differently! FWIW, I do think there’s some unit variance between L3s; Antdroid showed this in his review which is another reason why I don’t really recommend it. Something else to consider is that I don’t have a vested interest. I’m neither sponsored nor is this my own unit, so I have nothing to lose by giving my (subjective) honest thoughts.
