I’ve made the same comment as well, a hi vis vest you can just pull on when it gets darker, or later in the trip if you get caught in the rain which also impairs drivers visibility.

Agreed. Sometimes you just gotta swallow your pride a bit. A vest may look funny but it can be the difference between being alive or a splat on the road. As a long distance cyclist i know. Had friends get hit by cars from not being seen.

One more comment. I’m 5 1/2 years sober. I started a long distance hike on the Appalachian Trail with just 4 or so months under my belt. When I was looking for the clothes I was going to wear I was bummed that my sort of grungy rock style of clothing wasn’t available in hiking attire. My clothes were tied to my identity. 5 years later I could care less, I know that being prepared for my journey is more important than looks, after some time struggling because you’ve made aesthetic choices over functionality choices your ego dissolves, your sense of self is only who you are internally. That is a wonderful place to be at in life. I’ve hiked 1,000’s of miles now and my knowledge to keep my self safe and alive is my priority. Love this journey, I see you doing things everyday that I know could be easier with some gear alterations and sometimes those things make or break you. I say all of this with respect and love, in the end it’s your journey. Also as a Texan, I’m worried a bit. The driving here is absolutely wheels off.

These videos are so rad. And a hi viz vest is a good idea man - even drop in to a bike shop and grab a daytime flash rear light to clip to bag so people see you a long way off. Long time road cyclist - horriffic what drivers claim 'not to see' - people just run straight into the back of and kill cyclists even when they do everything right (lights/bright clothes). Incredible journey, such a good story you are telling!

That looks really dangerous tbh. Just one fuck-up like forgetting water for a few hours can lead you to lethal dehydration real quick. Out there, you should be drinking 6+ liters of water per day... at least :/ Not to mention eating actual calories.
@dhaloh
@dhaloh Жыл бұрын
Yeah dude I agree. I think peeing 3 times during the whole trip (~2 weeks) is like so little. He should add those exercise rehydration packets to his water. They contain vitamins, electrolytes and salts. I went into hypothermia (34 degrees celsius which is like very cold for body temp.) once when I was on a trip in France during very hot weather. Happened because I didn't consume enough calories and while I was drinking like 3 liters a day, I was forgetting about salts which can be very very dangerous. Really hope he stays safe and listens to the comments and the people who pass him by. The tips about water, calories and hi-vis vest.

Hey Chad.. I love what you're doing. I know you are mostly skating during the day... But it would be cool to see clips of where you end up staying. I know all hotels look the same.. but every video is literally just landscape photography. It's interesting when you talk. Or talk about the day. That's the most compelling stuff for us viewers. You talking.. or the moment you find your lodging feels good for us. Just a suggestion

Just started following along a couple days ago. Very cool idea. Used to be a skater but gave it up after high school. Might have to get back into it now. I agree with the other folks about making yourself a bit more visible. You could get a lightweight flashing light from a bike shop and stick it on the back of your pack. USB rechargeable battery. Also- not sure if your are thinking about salt intake, but keeping your sodium levels up is very important. You are probably sweating it all out of your body and the water intake is diluting all the salt in your system. Salt pills would help with this. Lack of salt leads to serious muscle cramping.

I know I’ll be the millionth comment saying this but dude you really gotta ditch the all black not only for the safety like the guy said in the truck but the black has the exactly opposite effect you think it does against the heat and sun. Black and dark colors soak up all the heat where lighter colors reflect more of it off of you. Black pants aren’t gonna matter as much but a lighter shirt will make a huge difference

I gotta agree with the vest comment. You're out there in all black and it can be dangerous af on those long roads where drivers may be distracted or on a highway trans where you kind of end up staring at the lines and not focusing ahead. Even some reflective tape from a hardware or automotive store that you could get creative with if a vest makes it uncomfortable. Anyway, just found you and love what you're doing. Truly inspiring. Can't wait until this weekend so I can binge your journey so far.

What you are doing is superb man, great resolve and dedication. I saw you dump the hoodie and I totally get that and the beed to travel light. One tip from me (for what itnis worth) is to get a thin piece of cotton or linen cloth, like a cheese cloth. I have one on my bag all the time and fond it so useful. Super light and takes up no room but it I need to cover my head or face, neck, pad my shoulders or even carry stuff it can be deployed. Recently I was shooting a fashion piece on a sand dune and wrapped my head up like Laurance of Arabia. It saved me from burning, and sand getting in my mouth and eyes etc. It also helps if I get colt, I just wrap it around like a scarf and that can be enough. Packing light for me means each item can have more than one use whenever possible so a swiss army cloth (so to speak) makes sense. You can also wet it and use ot to stay cool. 😊😊

Great job overcoming today! I mentioned in another comment, I rode a bamboo bike across the country in a similar route, for human trafficking. You’ll drop weight, but keep the calories & water intake up. You’re going through the most desolate stretch here. Population will become more dense after TX. Little towns will offer more opportunities for water & food, but also more traffic. As a bicyclist, I saw a noticeable shift in manners from some drivers once I got Louisiana, Mississippi & Alabama. Rude & purposefully dangerous compared to CA/AZ/NM/TX. But the rest of the folks in LA/MS/AL were fantastic. Hills weren’t dramatic, just smaller & more of them. Total give & take in that department. Had my biggest day in FL, 226 miles. You’ll fly in FL. Head up! 🤙🏼

Its really like climbing a mountain. I always think "I could climb a mountain, just gotta keep going up and maintain a good grip and make steady progress". But then i remember that crossing 2 ladders roped together over a lethal crevasse is also part of climbing the mountain and them I'm like no way count me out. The constant danger of getting hit by cars is my "crossing over the crevasse on roped ladders" for this scenario I feel like. But at the same time, its very unlikely to get hit. It would give me major anxiety though.
