Talking about friends, I do have some friends that I am actually reconsidering if they are necessary. I do enjoy the time I spend with them but I am starting to doubt if they are really who I should be spending/wasting my time with. If it turns out that they are not bringing anything to the table, I am not sure how I can break it to them that "this is the end".

I loved how you worded that, “money, solves a lot of problems.” I hate that saying “money doesn’t buy happiness,” but you know what it does buy, less problems or not having to worry about making ends meet, and that equals happiness to some of us! If you ever grew up poor or struggled you know money buys you less worry, less stress. Only people with a lot of money say it doesn’t buy happiness because they don’t even know what makes them happy, so of course it wouldn’t work for them. Those of us who grew up without it however…
@mankybrains

Happiness has a value and most people stay ignorant about it especially in this capitalistic society we all live in now. You and I know it has a dollar value. But I have to disagree that only rich say money doesn't buy happiness. It also goes for the poor as well, some will be happy being poor, but in general as those who say it use it to cope with their situation. I have heard it over the years from various people of different financial backgrounds: 'if only I had this much, I just need this much to retire, I want to not have to worry, I don't need much money'. The most recent one was exactly the opposite thinking, 'more money more worries'. But I understood why his mentality is like that. He heard enough stories of families torn apart because of money, he himself experiencing it. Still even with those experiences, as a person outside looking in, I know he would be happier with a few thousand readily available.

Exactly. It’s one of the many hypocrisies of this society. Something people say to make themselves feel better. “mOnEY dOeSnT BuY hApPinEsS” ….but yet everyone and their mother is crying about the wealth gap and the cost of living. How many rich people commit suicide compared to the poor? The difference is like night and day.

Money gives you *freedom* - both kinds of it: 1. The freedom _to_ do good things - options or choices that most of us don't have, e.g. holidays and home-ownership and enjoyable careers. 2. The freedom _from_ bad things - health insurance and emergency funds and bailouts from rich family if anything goes wrong; infinite second-chances. Rich people have the freedom to choose to be happy and get therapy or less stressful jobs. Many don't, but it's still better than not having that freedom in the first place.

I'm kind of the opposite. I was a great kid in school, joined the Army at 18, had my Bachelor's degree by 24. Had 2 career jobs that paid well. Then I hit 30 and now at 32 I'm in the worst place I've ever been in in life and feel like quite the loser. Trying to turn it back around, but it hasn't been easy. This year was first time I ever had a negative bank balance and first time I ever went two consecutive months without employment. Reflecting and watching this video, I realize I stopped doing a lot of the things I really focused on and pushed for before. I got complacent and kind of gave up for a couple years, just existing and not living. Spending more than I needed to as well. But I used to be so good at adulting when I was younger. :| Need to get back

I'm 35 now, my 20's were a complete waste, from blowing up a good job in banking I had back there it just went downhill all the way to rehab for cocaine adiction. I lost everything, the little shit I got left I got together 3 years ago and started learning to code by myself, just relentlessly grinding and learning non stop til this day. I was hired last january to a Senior Fullstack Developer role, the pay was so good that I could leave Brazil and lots of those bad memories that still haunted me. Now I'm living in Canada, still working remotly for this Brazilian company and trying to land a job here in Canada. So YES, everyday is a new day to get your shit together, a thousand mile journey begins where one stands, so don't give up guys!

I had suicidal pangs due to depression and that's when quit my last job at the age of 35 and since then - for a year now - I have been freelancing on things like content writing and subtitling in English and German (as I cleared my intermediate certification recently). I had decided I won't go back to the BPO jobs I was into. While freelancing I started consuming more and more content on things like Content Marketing and Coding. That's when Python happened to me. At 36, I am doing a Python Bootcamp and also learning things on Blockchain. From being in total shit at 35 to being someone and with childlike curiosity at 36, I have learned one important life lesson - IT IS NEVER TOO LATE And THIS is precisely why I can relate to you and your channel a lot man. Great going!

Hey Dorian, really appreciate the authentic and helpful content you're putting out there man. I'm turning 30 this year and sometimes feel like I've wasted a large portion of my life, but for opposite reasons (always doing what I'm supposed to do, rarely what I feel a calling to do). I quit my job last year and am learning finally learning to code, but it's hard not to let the comparison game get me down sometimes. I often find your videos to be a good cure for that toxic 'comparing' mindset. Keep doing what you're doing man, there are people out there that really benefit from your story and perspective.

Dude I love that you're reaching out to other guys who struggle. I was a goddamn TWEAKER. Needles and everything. Homeless. Pushing the cart. No lie. Whacked out of my mind. 15 years later, I work in a cardiac cath lab, making just about 6 figures or close to it, depending on how much extra I work. I'm saving to buy properties and I'm on my way to financial freedom with a plan. Change is slow and sometimes unnoticeable. It comes with SETBACKS. But guys, it comes. It happens. All you have to do is start with something small and build on that success. You're better than you think, guys

Your videos have been a huge source of inspiration to me lately. I'm 33 and even though I haven't messed up as much as you did - in terms of drugs or going to jail - I also feel like my 20's were a total waste of life! I was trying, but from a more experienced perspertive, now I see that I absolutelly wasn't trying hard enough. Not even close to it. To find motivation to start over after more than 10 years doing basically nothing to improve is reeeeally hard. The feeling is (or at least was) that there was no way that there was still any perspective for me in this life. And now I've been studying code everyday as I was gonna die tomorrow. Something I should've already started doing many years ago, considering I'm enjoying it so much. I'm really grateful that you choose to share not only the perks, but also all of the shit you've been through and how you managed to overcome all of that. Thank you!

You’re only starting, believe me! Also about that guilt, it can develop into imposter syndrome but this is something very common. Life as an engineer can become very burnout so having outlets to release the stress and enjoy life are very important, look at video games that way. Sure, maybe putting 16 hours every weekend on a game might be a little excessive but hey, if it releases the stress then it’s important! Just remember to have fun, always :)

Thank you! I get self destructive sometimes and lose motivation and discipline to do the things I know will be best for my future self. Actually hearing similar insights, helps me to grow. I’ve never been around people who see this way. It’s always been near sided, nobody wants to put the effort in giving up when shit gets hard. Or peeps that just have a mask on at all times who don’t realize how important goals are. Didn’t learn until i wanted to get my head out of my ass that you become the people you surround yourself with. Thank you Dorian

Thank you Dorian I just recently stumbled upon your channel and just wanted to say your videos have been inspirational and motivating for me. I spent my 20’s just partying playing video games had a lot of odd jobs while wanting to do something with my life but lacked the motivation to do anything. Now that I’m 31 I FINALLY have the motivation to get into coding and turn my life around I want to be able to look back 10 years from now and say I’m glad I did this

I definitely feel this I'm completely different from who I was in my mid 20's and younger. I'm almost 30 now and I just wanna kick myself for how much time I've wasted on video games, relationships and partying my whole life. Hate thinking where I could be right now if I knew back then what I know now.

It's really cool that you've done all that you have & do all that you do, on top of what you already do for work, AND THEN also make videos for KZfaq that are actually really good quality. I don't think I could ever be that focused & determined & driven. It's really impressive. I just always been afraid to focus on anything because I don't want to lose my wider sense of things. Like, I've never done anything in particular because I've always wanted to do like... everything. Now I'm 31 going on 32 in 7 months and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. It's really defeating. Really defeating. I'm so swamped & behind on rent & bills right now. It's disgusting. Working dead end jobs, doing 60 to over 80 hours some weeks just to stay busy & have enough money to not worry about paying my bills or rent at the end of every week or month. It just gets so aggravating some times though. I've lost my cool a few times & knocked what little tower I had built down working such long hours and then found myself in a hole that I then had to dig myself back out of. This video & the shorter version came really close to really connecting with where I'm at & what I've gone through. I had a dual parent household, but I think I would have been better off in a single parent household and... so many other things. I never did anything bad but never really did much of anything at all beside trying to stay busy & not think about things. I never really had any body who cared & didn't really have the patience or see the point in putting a lot of time & money & effort into trying to go to school after high school because I didn't want to have to live at home so that I could afford to go to school while only working one job in order to be able to have the tike TO go to school. I don't know how I expected that to work out in the long run. I didn't really think about it. I guess I figured that so long as things were withstandable now, than they should be later. I never kept very high standards & never wanted to much either, and couldn't have afforded it anyway, so I didn't really mind or feel like I was missing out on too much. Well, let me tell you, ten or twelve years down the line here now I don't think I could be ANYMORE frustrated or bored or unfulfilled or disappointed than I am with myself & life than I am right now. But, like the sayings go, we often don't see how things could get any better when things seem good, but things can always be worse, no matter how bad they seem. That's not the perspective I want to have or keep, but those are phrases you often hear. I just feel so lost, man. I grew up in the middle of nowhere without even a little town & never had a lot of friends & so hustling of any kind wasn't really a thing I grew up around. I'm going to put in a few more applications today, but they're all for more dead-end jobs. Production & warehousing. Stuff I can hopefully do a bunch of overtime at & dig myself back out of this new hole I've dug myself into. I want to go at it with a different mentality now though. Like, I need to get out of this hole, but after that I really do need to put my money into things to make my self & life better. Things that are worth it & provide a little worth & value back. I can't tell you how much I hope that I can turn things around for myself in the next few years. The sooner the better. I would REALLY like to be making 100k sometime no later than between my 35 & 36th birthday. I'm a hard & smart worker who likes to do the best job that I can. It's just been one thing after another in life, man. It really isn't fair. I mean, some people are lazy or have bad intentions & don't deserve anything in my opinion, while then you have other who work hard & have good intentions but the world doesn't really help them if it doesn't also bury them in setbacks & obstacles. I'd like to do something like a skilled craft or trade, but I would also like to do something to help the world & people in general, like go to school for economics & sociology and/or psychology. Maybe even politics or policy making. The world is so screwed up & I often think the answers seem so simple. It's a mad, mad world. The good die young, man. The good die young. Thanks for this video & the shorter version. It felt personal & honest & really kind of helped. Fingers crossed. I wish a good life were as easy to have as cracking open the right fortune cookie. If all life were like that we would probably take it for granted. After a life without it, though, let me tell you, I'm pretty sure I would appreciate it now. Not having earned it, though, I would probably only end up ruining that life & ending right back where I currently find myself anyway, like I feel poor people who win big lotteries probably would or do. Most schooling, especially college, seems like just such a waste though. Semester style school years waste so much time & then they pack your course load with so many "fluff" classes that have nothing to do with your degree major or minor it just seems like such a waste of time & money & attention & effort. It's really, really frustrating & disheartening. I wish there were other options. Of course there are tech & trade schools or even apprenticeships. A lot of tech schools have bad reputations though, & trade schools & apprenticeships are by and large only for highschool kids or looking for kids freshly out of highschool. The same with colleges & universities. Like, it really should be easier for adults of any age to go back to school for anything, and it should be direct & efficient & affordable. Everyone wants to target the kids though. "Get them nice big loans they'll take half their lives to pay off. Forget anyone who didn't go to school right out of highschool." I feel we live in a rather disfunctional, crippling world. I wish I had the commitment & know-how to make my own KZfaq channel picking the world apart & talking to people about problems they have had in the world & life & other problems they feel & see in the world at large & talking about & researching why these problems exist, persist, and where they come from & what could be done about them & maybe even encouraging action to change things & taking those actions my/ourselves. The world really, really, REALLY needs to change, man. Really. Anyway, thanks for the video, man, it really hit home. Serious. Thanks for being personal & honest & open. We could use a hell of a lot more of that in the world.

I'm 35 and while certain things like my career and housing are concrete, everything else is missing. Family and partner are non-existent. Friends all moved away or cut me out of their life. And some half baked hobbies that just act as money pits. Started an online business for side hustle too. Everything is so unfulfilled.
