The comment about him ripping out all but his lines of each episode makes sense now. Many times ive often noticed fred seems off or clueless as to how to direcr his character in a particular scene. He had the best one liners tho. Like when the gang was looking at their passport photos fred said of himself "i look like a fist with eyes!" Ive seen it 100s of times yet still stop what im doing if that episode comes on!!

It's a shame that there was no love lost between Vivian Vance and William Frawley. Yet there on-screen comedic chemistry was the very best, and quite incredible. When watching Ethel and Fred, You'd never know that Vivian and Bill disliked each other.

1 - My fave William Frawley moment is and will always remain his brief scenes as the judge's political boss in 'Miracle On 34th Street'. Comedy gold between him and the judge. 2 - Really sad the way he left 'My Three Sons', but they just couldn't insure him anymore. They had to bring in Lucy herself to do the firing when MacMurray's own word wasn't enough. What's more, Frawley's Bub O'Casey may, in fact, be the very first character in TV history to receive the 'Chuck Cunningham' treatment as the show went on.

Interesting stuff. I can't help but think about some shows whose cast ensemble seemed absolutely perfect for their roles and interactions. One, of course, was I Love Lucy with Desi, Lucy, Bill & Vivian at the core---it is incomprehensible to me to imagine that show without any of those four in their respective roles. Same goes for MASH with Alan, Gary, Jamie & Loretta; for The Honeymooners with Jackie, Audrey, Art & Joyce; for The Andy Griffith Show with Andy, Don, Ron, Frances, Howard (aka Floyd) & Hal (aka Otis); for All In The Family with Carroll, Jean, Sally & Rob...among the many fine shows that will be remembered affectionately as long as there is cultural memory!

Interesting! Seems like he was a bit of an enigma: both intolerant and non-competitive, irascible and loving, a professional who focused successfully but only on his part and never on the whole script. Regardless, he was unique and a vital part of the show. What I get most out of this review is how different he-and all the actors-were on and off stage. Guess that’s why they call them actors. 😊Thank you!

I heard that Bill Frawley was a very bad alcoholic. He supported his alcoholic mother and sister. Desi Arnaz knew about Frawley's alcoholism. He wrote in his autobiography that he warned Frawley if he shows up late or drunk for work he would be fired. He was funny and I Honestly believe if they would have gotten anyone else to play his part that they wouldn't have been liked as well . Maybe without him the ratings of the show would have suffered. Something we will never know. as far as race goes my gosh you have to remember that this is another time and another place. most people were not raised to be tolerant of others in them days. I can relate to the guy on all other personality aspects that I'm a loner and I don't even associate with neighbors. as long as they keep playing I love Lucy this guy will be loved forever. Great job, Rick. You pointed out Frawley's positive points, then did mention his possible dislike of "ethnic types" other than White. I agree that may not hold much water, for Wikipedia says he and Desi became good friends during the run of the show, one of his few close friends. Also, as pointed out below by Rodney Bardin, Frawley was known as a heavy drinker before being hired. In fact, his career was on thin ice at the time because of this when he was hired for ILL. There's two stories on this, one is that Desi told him if he showed up drunk only once, he was fired. The second story is that Desi gave him two strikes, first time drunk he'd be warned; second time he's be reprimanded and a third time, he's be fired. (Using a baseball analogy Frawley would understand!). Frawley knew his career was on the line, tempered his drinking, and never once showed up drunk. It's hard to believe that Frawley would be completely ignorant of the storyline of each script, as he's be at rehearsals and waiting in the wings to enter on cue, he'd hear the other dialogue and certainly get wind of the general plotline. In these more enlightened times, I've wondered if Frawley was a closet gay. He'd definitely have to keep it super secret back then. He married once when he was quite young in 1914 and divorced in 1927. He's not known to have had any girlfriends nor linked to any women since then. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

It sounds like Bill Frawley and I have something in common - we separate our work life from our real life. A lot of people make friends at work and hang out with co-workers and visit each others homes, nope not I. I bet this was Frawley's way of thinking as well. As far as the ethnic group stuff, it was a different time and people just thought differently back then. Like you pointed out, he worked for Desi Arnez so obviously if he had issues with certain ethnic groups, cubans were not one of them lol. Great video!

Allegedly Vivian Vance wanted a younger man to play Fred her husband. I interpret this as Vivian being a little bit sexy vixenish but can you blame her ? You hit the nail on the head. Arnez made it clear what he expected. Frawley knew his lines...but, delivered them perfectly. Ball knew the magic was there after the first episode. Although she required Vance tone her beauty down, Ball felt, as the star, she literally had to shine the brightest. Hollywood of that era, it would be expected. People said Ball was standoffish on airplanes and such. Well, how many stars of today act any different. Stars of her era were put on a pedestal. Vance and Frawley were not friends...but, as professionals, they knew the chemistry between the characters was paramount. They delivered. The writers wrote the scripts to bring the best of each one of them to create something that is still magical. It can be compared to the perfection obtained in Gone With The Wind. Being a product of early television, I Love Lucy changed TV forever...and Desi Arnaz is the reason. He was a brilliant man....who like Frawley, allowing the bottle to rob his brilliance drink by drink. Can you imagine where Desilu would have gone if he had limited his drink and urges, to focus on becoming the "Go to" studio for tv series, and even producing variety programs? But, my point was the perfection of I Love Lucy. Over 67 years...and being shown worldwide to this day. A bar sit so high, I doubt any other program will ever bypass its fame. Frawley, even with his alcoholism, outlived Ball, Vance, and Arnez. What a legacy.

I'm just glad they went with William Frawley for Fred Mertz instead of Lucy's choice, Gale Gordon. I can't stand Gordon for more than short periods of time. Same with Ethel Mertz being played by Bea Benaderet. I can't even imagine the Mertz's being played by those two. Vivian Vance and William Frawley were perfect.

I never liked Gordon either. He spoiled her later shows for me and I didn't watch them.

No, William Frawley and Vivian Vance were a bad pairing. They should have been written as separate characters and not a married couple. For example, Fred could have been the grumpy landlord, and Ethel could be the fun-loving neighbor whose husband is never seen.

@@howtubeable That would've worked. It makes sense. But Gale Gordon would have been a terrible choice. He was horrible in Here's Lucy and Dennis the Mennis (post Joseph Kearns).

Do people know the difference between prejudice and racist? I’m pretty sure not liking another ethnic group would be considered racist. Being born in 1887 Iowa doesn’t surprise me though.

He was a massive yankees fan and even had in his contract that if the yankees playing in the world series he didn't have to show up to the show.this was tough for the show because the yankees made it to the world series many time during the run of the show.

There were also credible statements from those that knew him that state that William Frawley was gay. I remember reading this, but have not since been able to find the link to this information again, but I vividly remember reading this. It is rumored that he had a relationship with his male nurse, with whom he passed while walking on the sidewalk in Hollywood after viewing a movie together. This information does not change the fact that he was one of the greatest supporting actors in television history. NO ONE could have played Fred Metrz as well as William Frawley did. He was one of a kind.

I read the book on Vivian Vance a few years ago. Vivian and William DESPISED ONE ANOTHER!!!! When she found out he was cast as her husband, Vivian was 'MORTIFIED'!!!! He was several years older than Vivian, and she just DID NOT UNDERSTAND!!!! As the show progressed, Vivian understood much better! She would dress as a 'MATRONLY, OLDER WOMAN', compared to Lucy, because, after all, Lucy was that STAR!!!! And let's NOT FORGET, Lucy was EXTREMELY INSECURE!!!!
