Asking 'Have they seen me?' is something I've addressed in a car a number of times but it's also very important when riding a bike.

I gave up my car 6 months ago, to cycle and use public transport only. Yes I do miss the car and may get one again possibly next year, but me and my wife who uses a wheelchair are having a blast exploring the possibilities of being car less for the first time in 37 years. It has given her the opportunity and courage to be independent from me for the first time in 10 years. She’s now a secret shopper/traveler, and get’s sent on different public transportation buses/ trains/ taxis and writes about her experiences. 💪🏼

Reporting is all online and they now have a dedicated upload portal rather than using a file sharing site. It took me less than 10 minutes to do including cropping my video. Hopefully ease of use will mean more people who run dash cams, car drivers and cyclists will report bad driving and the perps will get the points they deserve. At the end of the day it is only the very few that spoil it for everyone else; I find the vast majority of drivers to be considerate and polite.

Ashley, I wish all driving instructors cycled too. It gives such an excellent insight into what it's like for cyclists on the roads. To pass that information and personal experience on to their students would be a win win situation for everybody. 23:50 I had something similar happen to me a few months back while cycling round the local school, I was waiting behind a parked car for oncoming traffic to pass so I could then move on to the next gap in the parked cars and the lady behind me decides to go and squeeze me into the parked car nearly hitting me (guess what she had passed me for, you guessed it! to park just infront and block an entrance); I gave her a tap on the B- pillar and she got out of her car and threatend me (even when I told her that she had nearly hit me), she even had the audacity to say that I'm obligated to be on the side of the road when it was occupied by a parked car. In the end I told the lady to get on her way seeing as she was too thick to understand basic safety logic.

I feel this danger on a daily basis. I am living in a city but my neighbourhood is very old thus the streets are narrow. That's why they are mostly one way. But still car drivers try to overtake me on roads where lorries aren't allowed because there is not enough space... And if you (rightfully so!) take primary position they harass you. From my experience it's 99% men who are behaving that way. Very scary as a young woman to experience aggressive men who use their cars as weapons.

As a dutch person, i've sort of ingrained questioning whether i've been seen or not. I automatically slow down enough to come to a stop safely both in car and on a bike before junctions, priority or not. Only when i have confirmed other road users have noticed me, either from eye contact, road placement or breaking behaviour, i will then increase speed again. Even as a pedestrian crossing roads, i will make sure any drivers and I have met eyes before actually crossing, doing so has allowed me to cross even busy and crowded streets without problem.

Thanks Ashley. I've been a cyclist for 60 years, I ride my bike(s) everyday and commuted by bike for decades. I live in cycle-city Cambridge. You ask if cycle intrastructure is satisfactory so that people will give up their cars. The answer is nowhere in Britain is it satisfactory, particularly in comparison to the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. Nervous people cannot be expected to ride in traffic where they're not segregated from motor vehicles. Compare your encounters that you show in your video. These type of encounters happen on almost every journey. All road users, including cyclists, need education of the type you promote. Keep up the good work.

Yeah. I live in a small car-centric town and my only options are to either ride my bike early in the morning or at night after rush hour has ended. Riding on the main roads around here during the day when everyone's out and about in their cars is just too stressful. Last Saturday I decided to pop down to my local ASDA early in the morning and it was one of the nicest, most relaxing rides I've had in my life. Barely any cars on the road. It's definitely going to be my routine from now on.

I used to cycle daily, often clocking in at least 100 miles a week, if not double. But the constant abuse from motorists got too much. I had one instance of a car driver slamming their brakes on and forcing me to rear end their car - the police were adamant that I must have encouraged the situation until they came to my house and reviewed the footage. The footage clearly shown no provocation from me and the driver was fined - but it shown me exactly how prejudiced the police are against reports from cyclists for dangerous driving, as they come from a drivers perspective and never take a holistic view of the situation. This put an end to cycling for me for at least 2 years until I regained confidence. I now only cycle infrequently and even then I tense up when a car is near.

I am working on it from my road rage-y days, but I'm sent straight back there by the hypocrisy of drivers who will risk your flesh and bone yet freak out when you dare to touch their vehicle (rare that I have anyway, simply looking at them funny sets them off just the same). It's often ignorance, both of the how dangerous their actions are and how loud the report is inside the car from minor taps, though I think it can be wilful ignorance.

Two points, firstly if you’re turning left or going straight on at traffic lights then you really need to be ahead of the leading car in primary position. On multiple occasions you sat on the drivers side corner of the leading car, relying on them assuming you would need to cross their path. Very risky way to go and totally unnecessary. And secondly the more you cycle, and the more you look like a cyclist, the more you’ll have close passes of the type you intended to report. Don’t bother, unless there’s an obvious deliberate intent to hit you there’s no point. These incidents will occur pretty much every time you take your bike out and you’ll be treated by your local police force as a vexatious complainant and lose any credibility. Save it for the genuinely dangerous moments, usually where the driver treats their vehicle as a weapon.

Good morning Ashley, not sure whether you gonna read the message, but will write in anyway. You were asking about the puncture resistance on bike tyres. This usually refers to a tyre with additional layer in them, making it more resilient to punctures, cuts. Very good rounder is Schwalbe Marathon tyres, good price, great protection, but heavier. Perfect for this bike as the weight doesn't matter that much. Or heavy duty bikes(many cycle travellers use them as they are really reliable) About the rolling resistance. There are 3 factors that affects it greatly. 1. the width - narrower usually means faster 2. the outer surface - less grippy usually means easier rolling 3. the pressure - higher pressure the tyre can take, the easier rolling The final word on the pressure is, the less surface the type is in contact with the road, the faster it is. It is the simple reason mountain/fat tyre bikes are considered sluggish, they often use tyres with low (~20)PSI, to make them grippy off road. On the other hand, road tyres can take a large amount of pressure(~120PSI), so they roll much faster. Hope this helps, stay safe!

Nice video - There were a couple of times cycle lanes were available to you during this ride it would be great to hear you talk more about your reasons for not using them during your rides. As a keen cyclist I'm well aware of the many reasons and I think you may have mentioned some of them briefly before. However I think a lot of motorists get annoyed when they see cyclists not using available cycle lanes and are more likely to close pass when a cycle lane is available. In this video, despite there not being many cycle lanes there were many reasons not to use them: - cars parked in cycle lanes - cycle lanes start and ending with no easy transition from the road for the cyclist - (More relevant to this bike than your usual one) - short cycle lanes which only slow the cyclist and increase risk as they have to leave and re-join the flow of traffic - narrow/complicated cycle lanes close to pedestrians that you would have had to reduce your speed to use safely.

Having an easy transition from a road to a cycle path is the biggest problem I face. You end up having to use a drop kerb which might be unsafe if you are going fast while on the road. Sometimes you might have to use a pedestrian crossing entrance (if it is empty) They just need better markings with advance warning and multiple opporunities to join a cycle/shared path.

If most people looked at there average speed they might be surprised that its a lot lower than they expect. The number 1 rule is have they seen me, is my position where they will be looking. It is better to be seen and annoying, than in a position that's out of view then getting hit. Saying that I got hit from car coming in the opposite direction that turned right across my path. I don't know if the driver had looked and failed to see or what. It took a few months to actually get my confidence on the road In the car not just on the bike I remember every time a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction I was thinking are they going to turn accross my path. So I knew it wasn't cycling that scared me. The police actually helped to get over it for myself

The amount of drivers who are triggered by filtering in stationary traffic and then pass you and pull tight to the kerb to block you is getting ridiculous. Passed a private hire minibus twice in traffic and on the third time the passenger was filming me on their phone and they pulled hard to kerb to prevent me passing a third time. There seems to be belief that filtering is 'illegal' and that cyclists should sit dutifully in traffic with the rest of them.

10:40 "so that ones not doing the 20 limit but it doesn't bother me in the slightest" I think it would be helpful if you took a strong stance on speeding drivers, Ashley. You point out when cyclists go through red lights as its dangerous, call out drivers who ignore 20mph speed limits which are in place to keep people safe. Young lad in Walton died last week after being knocked down on a 20mph road, was the driver going 20? Maybe but it's unlikely since so few drivers actually bother going the speed limit in 20 zones.

Great advice vdeo. I probably don't think enough about "have they seen me", although it's much harder to know that on the rural roads I commute on. I have a rear-view mirror though, which I really miss when I take another bike... It enhances the awareness I can have about what's coming behind me, especially when the wind makes it impossible to hear that. About puncture-proof tires : I covered over 20000 km with Schwalbe Marathon+ (mostly 32-406 and 40-559) without a single puncture. These tires are quite slow though. Conti Contact Urban seem to be a good choice as well, only got one puncture on them in 3000+ km, not bad at all.

It amazes me how drivers will throw their car around with wild abandon, yet will lose their sh1t if you tap it with a gloved hand - generally best avoided - but I have done it a few times. I would class that as a MGIF (must get in front) rather than a close pass. It was low speed, a small car you would probably bounce off and with the initial pass they did move out a bit. You get it all the time, especially with drivers who can't "see beyond the bike" - they are literally just looking at passing the cyclist and not taking into account the stationary traffic ahead of them.

19:00 A point missed with the Learner. You don't have to drive hard up to the line, especially if visibility is good. Stopping short gives others confidence you won't pull out on them which helps traffic flow and benefits you a little too. I would also say, though "don't cause other road users to change speed or direction" is possibly the best roadcraft maxim, it's impossible to follow completely on something slower, like a push bike. Just riding one helps reduce congestion, so making reasonable progress to make it a worthwhile choice for yourself is valid.

Good job taking primary when passing the first JCB (telehandler) , if you hadn't the mirror on the back could have took your head off and they are likely not insured to be on the pavement or road as they have no number plate. I'm also happy to see you had excellent lane control as this will show a lot of drivers that cyclists who take prime or filter are doing nothing wrong. I do personally believe that you should have to read the highway code before getting on a bike or in a car as it's the only way to know the rules (and keep up to date with changes). 21:45 - Multiple cars in breach of 166 of the highway code technically but there was plenty of room. 22:20 - That was clearly a driver thinking they own the road illegally trying to push you on to the shared cycle path (in which there's a car parked), SP57UVM not blurred but number plates are public domain. 23:30 - You really should have reported Y90SML one faster as they could kill someone driving like that (if you got pushed in to a drain you could fly off), I believe them turning in was to pull over for a fight, when something like that happens to me I find a safe place to pull off where they can not follow and have a rest till I feel safe to ride again.

Great vid ash. Just want to add, puncture proof really does make a difference. There are different levels of it and tech involved and some manufactures do a better job. They cost a bit more and add more weight. While not foolproof - it does make a difference. I have run over a broken bottle and been fine with the top of range proofing systems. It even works just as well for thin tyres. All tyres do let more in when they get worn as they are a lot thinner so bear that in mind. Also rim tape is essential. And make sure remove thorns etc when repairing them.I have cycled 5K miles a year for many years now and tried all kinds of tyres. The best proofing system really do make a big difference.

When Brompton bikes were still relatively rare (i.e., read nerdy) and used stock tyres, there was one occasion when I had three punctures from small glass fragments in one day. It was my commuter bike and I had loads of punctures which is a major annoyance when it is on the rear. When they finally started fitting 'puncture-resistant' tyres, I went down to only one puncture a year, and it was relatively easy to regularly check the tyres and pick out any glass fragments before they became a problem. Puncture-resistant tyres were probably as big a leap forward in bike design as electric bikes today.

Hi Ashley, something concerning your grip. I noticed you didn't have your hands on the brakes a lot while going past parked cars and in residential area's. One of the main things I learned from your videos, is that you should solve potential problems with braking, not with steering. Of course it's complicated, because decreasing speed also decreases balance, and braking and steering at the same time is a great way to perform a high speed road taste test. But just to give myself more options and not needing that half a second to move my hands, I always keep my hands on the brakes while cycling in urban area's. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Other than that, thanks for all the tips and tricks of using the road. I didn't pay any attention to the A-pillar blind spot of cars while I was cycling before watching your video's. And now I make sure I can be seen in the sidemirrors instead of zigzagging behind a vehicle to see how to get past them. :) All your lessons are just as usefull here in the Netherlands!

Drivers in urban areas are often desperate to overtake bikes because they think they are 'slow' (which electric bikes certainly aren't), and most drivers have no understanding of the concept of filtering. After a deliberate close-pass or abuse, you can see their terror as you approach from behind by filtering when they have nowhere to go. The temptation to casually swing your D-lock as you pass is sometimes almost overwhelming, but a Paddington stare usually does the job.

They appeared to be focused on you after that tap rather than the road judging by the speed, positioning and general behaviour afterwards (OK, it wasn't great before but a lot worse after) This is one reason why I try not to react to anyone else on the road no matter what they have done (I have the occasional moment for which I do apologise when I can) as it affects more than just myself and the other vehicle and can become a danger to everyone else around. At one point you filter down the right and then turn left at the lights. I would do this differently. Consider filtering down the left if there is space and it's safe (vehicles stopped) or filter right but move into a central position in a gap before the front of the line of cars. Or when you reach the front pull right over to the left, your front wheel may cross the line but this is far preferable to the position you took up. The driver in this instance was considerate and let you go, many will be triggered by you filtering and not let you go leaving you in an awkward position.

I thought I was useless, but when I had the bike serviced (free with the bike) the bike mechanic had it rubbing on 2nd as well. Recently it has decided to go out of alignment on 3rd -- how can it be out of alignment for a gear in between all the others?! It's only still on the bike while I save up for a IGH. Also, I immediately noticed (2:32) the knock-off "SunRun" freewheel you've got there. If it's a loud freewheel, try to get some medium to heavy oil in it because those knock-offs have next-to-no lubricant in them. Washing the bike is usually enough to make them dry as a bone and rusty. (Ask me how I know!) I'm not sure what you should use; I've seen Phil Wood Tenacious being used, but that's not available where I live, so ATF or chainsaw bar oil would be my picks. Add the oil between the stationary and moving parts until the clicking is noticeably quieter.
