The easy answer to this is. Depends on where you are. Places like NYC, yes they are one system. Where I live, it's two systems. I know because I work at the sewer.

Age 11 - 14 I took a higher diploma in hydraulic civil engineering after my parents moved to the Costa del Sol for a number of years. (Of course I had no choice but to come and integrate with the Spanish world) now that I look back on those days, extremely dangerous during the practical times and at that stage I had to take the mathematics (all precalculus) to be prepped for the theory. Practical I’d occasionally come across, then later design these but there they were known as “arqueta” or “Colector de fecales (drenaje)” and in the UK, “combined sewer overflows” (CSOs). Within some of the large culvert networks under the city of Estepona, they could be in the form of concrete boxes that are open topped, these boxes could be inside the walls of the culvert (or floor like the one you showed, virtually anything) or protruding from the sand in the beach, and once the incoming flow from the combined sewer surpasses a certain threshold (determined by the hydraulic calcs of the smaller line that intercepts the now regulated flow) a bottleneck occurs and it goes on from there, overflows through a line into the storm drain or receiving vessel. Back then, it was a bugger to not use calculus. Manually graphing the flow like it was the 1800s. Now studying electrical engineering and might pursue a proper degree in drainage when the time comes.

Magnificent coverage of a erm, poopy topic #dadjokequotamet. Jokes aside very interesting thou, it makes sense and whilst I live on the top floor of a small apartment block so the likely hood of 'ol faithful' bursting out of my porcelain throne is very low (like someone went super sayan in the neighboring cubical whilst "on the job"), it is still very reassuring that such infrastructure exists.
