Rose tells her mother the parable of the drowning man who refused 2 boats and a helicopter. Rose was the only person who saw the oil tanker, heading straight for her. She saw the deer who everybody dismissed. She saw the Thorne household and decided she was not going to wait to be saved. God helps those who help themselves. Rose was the only survivor.

I thought it was also a good touch that Rose wore the NASA t-shirt while at the pool which was relatable to the possible space warfare that resulted in the disruption of communications and networks. She had the answers, but everyone else were just too occupied with the situation at the moment.

In my opinion, Clay intervening during the standoff was the ultimate point of the movie. The "useless" man manages to get them to step back from the brink of exactly what the attackers want people to do. He may be useless, but he was able to keep good people from going feral.

Time is running out, do not be an enemy of the one true God, let Christ be your savior, not the judge sentencing your eternal torment, so let us die to our old sinful nature, repent and turn from all sin and unprofitable things, thoughts and desires. Do not let the devil win, causing us to live under fear, a slave to sin and unclean desires, marked for death and suffering both now and after, but let us be redeemed and forgiven through the Savior of mankind, washed clean, though we still suffer it is no longer something we fear, as the world is not our home anymore, and he is our comforter.

One thing I took from the ending is that we, as a society, rely so much on cloud-based storage that we put everything in it: movies, art, music, pictures, literature, medical documents, etc. I feel that once the internet goes down, like in this movie with the last episode of Friends, we lose it and have no power to access it anymore. Physical copies of these art forms, articles of information, and knowledge need to be kept in some sort of physical form.

11:29 I believe that’s one of the most important messages of the movie that many people are missing. Those who are searching for an ending are acting like Rose , the little girl who was desperate to find out the ending of “Friends” even though her world was falling apart. Maybe the movie writers want us to not care so much about fiction and face our own reality instead. Like the boy said, why does it matter how a fictional movie ends? Your world is already falling apart, so worry about that instead.

United States isn't going into civil war though and we are no where close. Just the media and social media influencers pushing some odd narrative. Shit was worse in the 70 and 80s. We had riots, mass division and racial problems back then. We had wars and evil politicians. During JFK and the Cuban missile crises people thought the word was gonna end. When Isreal was under attack and at war with like 4 islamic countries, people thought we were entering biblical end times. Yet after all that. We are still here. Facing the SAME ISSUES just under different circumstances. Lived long enough to see all the bullshit at this point.

It's only bound to happen because american culture is a twisted shadow of what it was and Americans have become alike to rabid animals. Civilization collapsed plenty of times all over the world, we rebuilt every time, because unlike Americans the rest of the world historically understands that working together to rebuild civilization is far better than living in a post apocalyptic hellscape. Europe saw in Total more than 1000 years of pure anarchy, no rules, no laws, no nothing, and yet all the European countries are perfectly fine nowadays, because rather than fighting each other they got together and rebuilt society, because guess what, society is far better than the delusional power fantasy most Americans have about the post apocalypse. You have an epidemic of schizo republicans who wish for nothing more than the opportunity to go around killing people as the kings of the post apocalyptic world where the weak liberals fear them, and you also have an epidemic of schizo democrats who wish for nothing more than a collapse of the capitalist system so their magical communist paradise where they can punish all those who offend them can finally begin. This stuff happening is not the issue, the issue is America as a country and Americans as a population, and it's an issue that exists and will exist regardless of whether a collapse actually happens. Eventually america as we know it will end, because unlike the rest of the world america didn't go through the multiple collapses it takes to actually form a stable country and society (like europe and asia did), but i doubt it'll be this dramatic or much of a big deal, any real problem will come from the american people, which cause problems even now.

We were supposed to think that it’s odd that Rose only cares what happens to the people on a show, despite all of the chaos going on around her. But, then this movie makes a lot of us care about what happens to the people at the end of the movie…”I was so close”…and leaves us with no conclusion or explanation. It puts the majority of the viewers in Rose’s shoes, while chaos is happening in our own world. So, now, we relate.

Julia Roberts's character is relatable af! Due to life experiences, I've chosen to isolate myself from the majority. I'm quite closed off and defensive, and have a very very small circle of people that I trust. In fact, I tell myself daily how much I hate people. But, at the same time, I yearn for social interaction... but only on my terms. I'm coming to the realization that I don't hate people, I'm just afraid of the pain/disappointment that may come with interacting/developing relationships with others. It's only because they started to evolve and leave their prejudices behind. It's the only way to survive. Change. The prejudiced undertones of the movie confirm this. It all started with that white lion slave ship docking at point comfort (store) in 1619 (radio station). Unfortunately the undertone that was created from that moment on in America and passed down though generations could have people turning on each other when something like this happens. The film conveys a powerful message about the racial divisions among America's citizens, highlighting the diverse nationalities present. It suggests that in times of turmoil, unity may be elusive, and people might align with their own groups, potentially leading to a civil conflict. This phenomenon is reminiscent of situations in Syria or Iraq, where disparate groups joined forces based on their differences.

That jazz-dance scene in THE FLOOD was a stand-out favorite of mine. Not _just_ due to the excellent choice in music, but also how much of a breath o’ fresh air it was! Now, typically in horror movies… A scene where ”the married woman of our main family drinks with another man” often becomes a bad omen for when good ol’ infidelity begins to rear it’s ugly head. Often resulting with the rest of the film being entirely dedicated to the immense amounts of family drama around the incident and ultimately making the dynamic of our cast spiral into darkness. I was expecting this as well with this scene (and in general, most of the things that happened in THE FLOOD) (Especially all of Maya’s remarks around Clay _”wanting to 🐬 her”_ 😬)… But the film never stooped that low. Instead, both H.G & Amanda realised how drunk they were and how both of them were married, ending in ”Scott” admitting how much he misses his wife and the two of them connecting in a platonic & genuinely healthy way! 🎉 Man… Scenes like these really drive home the under-lying theme of us having to trust eachother more. 😌

Don’t get why people are bothered by the ending? It was clearly set up for those two families to be together and prepare for anarchy and chaos. Based on the bike tracks, they will find Rose, the bunker, and take it from there. Bacon gave them a heads up. I enjoy movies more than anything entertainment has to offer. For me it’s the dialogue, the acting, what happens during the movie, and the build-up that gets me. I haven’t watched a solid movie in a long time and this one was very refreshing and unique. The actors are all A-list quality! Sick and tired of this superhero marvel bullshit cartoon era we’ve been having for the last thirteen years. I need actual plots that are based on reality.

Another huge theme is that the characters were able to bury their animosity and suspicions and work together. Even Kevin Bacon’s character relented and agreed to lend a hand, after swearing he wouldn’t. So there’s an element of redemption at play. The male characters also mention going to the bunker, and the two women have Rose’s bicycle tracks to lead them right there. That is symbolic of Rose noticing things and being a guide of sorts throughout the story. So I think there is a pending reunion of the characters in the bunker.

The ending made sense to me. The movie was essentially showing the initial collapse of civilization as we know it and the panic that follows. I dont think anyone is finding a happy ending in a story like this. Rose found peace and solace in a bunker because she not only recognized what was happening around her and accepted the danger they were in but she trusted her instincts (or the signs she was seeing)- which is why she said what she said in the bed with her mom (the whole family wouldve found the bunker earlier if her brother didnt stop her) everyone else let their cynicism, fear and denial run them in circles amongst the chaos above ground.

She also said no one cares what I say which is how alot of younger people feel now days, and she left bc no one paid any attention to her and she was only focused on herself. On the other hand at the end all the characters came together. KB ended up not shooting, JR helped the girl scare the deer away. The ending isn’t bad at all. It’s actually very well written, and perfectly executed. The most important line in the entire film that literally everyone seems to have missed, is when Rose explains an episode she watched on The West Wing. The story about a man who lives by the river. The man hears on the radio that the river is going to flood the town, and that everyone should leave. The man doesn’t leave, because he prays everyday, and he knows that everything will probably be ok. The town floods, and the man is trapped. A guy in a rowboat comes by to save the man, but the man refuses the help and stays put. He’s going to pray and wait it out. Then a helicopter comes by and throws the man a ladder. The man refuses the help and stays put. He’s going to pray and wait it out. The man ends up drowning, and upon going to heaven, he asks god “why did you let me die? I prayed everyday that you would save me”. God’s response to the man is, “I sent you a message on the radio that your life was in danger. You did nothing. I sent you a man in a boat to save you, but you did nothing. I sent you a helicopter, and still, you did nothing. What more do you want?” After telling this story to her mom (who keeps insisting, along with everyone else around her, they just sit tight and wait it out. It will all be ok), Rose says that she’s done waiting, and disappears the next morning. The ending is simple. The ending is great! The entire movie was absolutely great! Rose understood one crucial element to the nightmare going on around her that nobody else did. If we don’t stop wishful thinking, and relying on prayers and high hopes to get us through this, we’re just as good as dead. So fuck this, I’m out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The ending for me was so sudden and unexpected that for me it was quite irritating. But a couple days later I reflected on it and in the midst of everyone commenting on how much it was full symbolisms, I have come to this conclusion: ThE ending reads just like the beginning. This family was in search of getting away from the bind and grind of everyday life. In effect: Leave the World Behind. So they took a getaway vacation. A form of escapism. At the end- same thing. Their daughter, in her own way, was in search of the one thing that she said made her happy- and she found it- those episodes of Friends. A deep reflection of what is so typical of the modern day family- while the world around us is falling apart, well- we always have TV or some getaway source of recreation we can turn too for escapism. Too bad it doesn't solve the problems.

Did anyone pick up on the Obey T shirt next to the NASA Tee in the same frame? The OBEY brand is an hommage to the movie “They live” in where the protagonist wears special glasses to see who actually rules the world and what they use to control it. In leave the world behind GH also alludes to how there are no actual forces controlling the world while he jokes about the Cabala people in the same scene. Later they pan to an American flag on the moon which is believed by many to be propaganda that never actually happened.

Additional things that I noticed: The radio station was 1619, a reference to the year 1619 when enslaved Africans were brought to the US against their will. The most helpful or vulnerable people were of color - Ruth and George and the Latina that the husband abandoned. The exception is the young White daughter who said she cared about the Friends characters, yet didn't care to stay with her family. 3. Friends is a show that received a lot of flack for being lily White, with eventually 1 Black character, in NYC, a culturally diverse city. The White characters came off as not caring for humanity, until the end of the movie when they realized that we need to band together to survive. 4. George and Ruth stayed below the family which symbolizes Blacks treated below Whites historically in this country, even though George had a higher net worth and was much more educated than his White counterparts. 5. Danny mentioned that multiple countries banning together against America, possibly symbolic of White supremacy coming to an end. 6. Julia Robert's character loved Black music but had prejudices against Ruth and George. Many (not all) White people love Black culture but are racist as hell, including the liberal ones. Just my thoughts.

I have to agree with others... along with the editing, they relied way too much on the score. Things were oddly mixed too, with the music and whenever they'd try to pan audio left or right off screen. The music was so forcibly used to push the emotion they wanted rather than relying on the rest of the scene. The film in general lacks any subtly, and the overdone music adds to that.

What I got out of this movie? Well, since the Obamas were the ones who produced it, it is a take on Obama's presidency. The Washington's are the physical representation of the Obamas. Tall, dark skin, well spoken and well mannered man and a lighter skin, soft, and equally well mannered and well spoken women. With a name (George "G.H." Washington) to make you reference his predecessors (George H.W.Bush and George Washington). Many of the racial references went over my head completely. For example many of the food brands in the bunker I had never heard of. And no, just like Disney not wanting to anger the Chinese, the Obamas aren't going to want to anger the Chinese with a drink brand called "Chinese Cherry" with a logo reminiscent of Loony Toon characters. Also like the reference to Taney Farms. I mean to even catch the reference you have to know about the statute's removal, and then know who Roger Taney was (Supreme Court Justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision). And then still be even looking for that connection to see the reference in the film. Ironically, "The Huxleys" I actually took to be a play on the word "Huxtable". The family name of the family in "The Cosby Show". And the director was trying to show what happens to a black family if they continue to play nice. To understand that this isn't that reference but a reference to an author who wrote "Brave New World" a classical work most people in public education probably have never read, would probably require a person to come from an English literature program in college and still remember the authors from their college days reading lists. (Assuming they even read the books.) But to be honest, I do like the take on this reference. "Brave New World" is basically what the survivors would face if they survive by going to the bunker. And ironically possibly creating the very world that TV shows like "The Cosby Show" or "Friends" tried to envision. The Huxtables maybe gone but the safe space home is still there in the world of "Brave New World" while hoping to eventually lead to a new brave new world. The color blue meaning safety. Although I didn't initially catch the intended meaning of the color in the film, I'd argue what it means is a false sense of safety. Much like the Obama years where Obama used his position as president to undercut Public Safety in his comments before they had a chance to fully investigate an incident. So yeah, blue represents the Obamas lack of trust in the system from the get go. And then there is the flyers. Why are they in Arabic? Well, as some one who served in the Middle East I have samples of the flyers we dropped in Afghanistan. And yes they were nothing but pictures and Arabic writing. Which makes me think the White House actually approved those flyers before they were made. And that is why this variation is in the movie. And yes, those were pre-Obama years. That goes back to his predecessor. And for whatever reason, Obama didn't agree with the flyers or is attempting to undercut what they tried to do to maintain peace in the region. What I'm about to say is a bit of a stretch, but maybe what he is trying to say is that the Afghans might be highly illiterate and thus the flyers are viewed as pure gibberish. Just like it is for the people in the movie. The Tesla's all crashing into each other. That can only be taken as a jab to Elon Musk. Because his political approaches are heavily in the free speech area and counter to the take of many of the progressive policies this country has endured for several years now and which ultimately started in the Obama era. So it is basically a take on not trusting his product. And this in turn is probably a play on the fatal Tesla crash where the Tesla was in autopilot mode and crashed into a non-moving vehicle. But it is ironic that the Obamas would go there. Obama was all about renewable green energy and Tesla was one of the first mass produced vehicles to address this approach. So to question it, would in turn question Obama's political stance on the subject. But again, him and his wife produced this movie so infer what you will about this. I disagree with the author's take on the "White Lion" reference. No, it has nothing to do with Mother Earth. The White Lion was the first ship to bring Africans to the US. Specifically the Virginia Colony. So it references slavery crashing onto the US shores. Especially that early in the movie. But again, to catch that reference you have to be looking for it, know your US history when it comes to the topic of slavery, and still remember enough about the early events to catch the reference. They microwave attack and the bomb drops on NYC. Well, you won't have a microwave attack if the whole power grid is down. And the impact would require relative proximity to the microwave device assuming it is mobile. And as for bombs, they aren't nukes. The city wouldn't even be recognizable. It would be smoldering ruins with no recognizable buildings still standing. The reference to the son losing his tooth is probably an attempt to reinforce the idea of radiation sickness but it would impact everybody near equally and not just him. But nowhere on Long Island would be safe from the nuclear fallout and there would be nuclear fallout. So the bombs would have to be traditional in origin. But regardless, this leads to the question of where are all of the refugees? Was NYC evacuated prior to the bombs dropping? And even so people would have moved up to Long Island. Refugees would have been a major issue faced by these characters. They are not in as isolated world as they are portrayed to be in. And last there is the three step method to over throw a government. I actually got a chuckle out of that one because it came straight out of the Obama Presidency play book. Anybody remember "The Arabic Spring"? Apparently the author of this video didn't. In short this movie's intended target is Ivy League educated people who spent four years getting indoctrinated into believing in White Guilt. It has no answer at the end, because there is no answer. The movie assumes racial tensions will always exist and no progress was made. Racism is always there and just like the references in the movie, are hiding in the background.

From the moment we meet her she only cares about her device, then later, getting the Wi-Fi up so she can complete her show, while the "world" (ha! the U.S.) begins to unravel. She makes no commentary to the ill treatment of the home owners, doesn't check up on her brother after he's bit, as she convinced herself that no one listens to her, which is foolish because her brother was bitten placating her, her father tried to placate her by attempting to fix the signal. She noticed the deer- that was it. In the end, the little sociopath left her family to fend for themselves while she broke into a neighbors home, devoured the snacks with zero care in the world and rested in the comfort and security of the series finale of Friends.

They ignore the backroom war with the Soviets and eat up propaganda that turns them against their neighbors. This movie keeps focus on the ignored "warnings". Only the youngest, most innocent character in the movie (who was largely ignored by everyone else) was saying that it was all a message. A lot of people didn't like the daughter, but honestly, I thought she was the most relatable. Her character arc is exactly the same as what most people are living through day to day. The world keeps falling apart around us, and no matter how much we and other people try to fix it, it just keeps finding new ways of breaking itself. We live in a hopeless time where a thousand different doomsday scenarios are hanging over our heads, and we're all powerless to do anything about it because the powers that be constantly subvert every effort we take to make the world a better place. So, when the world decides it just doesn't want to get better, what's the best course of action? Use media to escape reality. We all do this every day. And the more unfixable things get, the more tempting it is to just say "screw the world" and retreat into our own private bunkers and lose ourselves in stories and entertainment, because that's BETTER than dealing with the real world and all its unfixable problems. The girl's journey to watch the last episode of Friends is a direct parallel to the way we all choose to ignore the crumbling world around us, and you know what? I don't even think it's that bad of a strategy. It's definitely what I'd do. I think if most people could ensure that they themselves had food, shelter, water, and the other essentials to survive indefinitely, then each of us would prefer spending our lives engaging in entertainment than struggling through a harsh and pointless existence trying to fix a world that refuses to be fixed.

If you didn’t like this ending is because you are Rose. You want to know what happens but that’s the point, to be left with that feeling of unease. Even the characters don’t know exactly what is happening but at least some have an idea. If something like that happened that would be out hypothesis too. It’s slow because that’s what it would be like if the grid just collapsed. Rose watched Friends because that’s what a 13 year old is now, engrained in their reality. 13 year olds don’t know what is happening in the world but their own. This movie was excellent. A really good depiction of what it would feel like if the world we know suddenly just stopped. It saddens me people didn’t like it but in today’s TikTok world, I can understand why.

Regarding the story about God sending messages to the guy, trying to save him, and the guy not listening...the signs are everywhere if you choose to read them. A warning to us all, about what is to come if we don't stop this insanity and start working together to make this world a better place. One thing I noticed was how Julia’s character asks George for an ID. I thought it was a reference to those multiple cases of black people being asked to identify themselves and explain themselves as to why they are in places where some racist people think they shouldn’t be. Black people being forced to explain why they belong. Even though it was George’s house, George himself acts very docile in the face of Julia Robert’s character being an absolute Karen.

Friends didn't need black characters. Ross and Monica are jewish and Joey is italian. Diversity doesn't mean that including black people is mandatory. All these shows and movies with a 50% black cast aren't realistic, since black people are a minority in the West. I live in the Netherlands and cringe every time i see another tv commercial with a mixed race couple, as those are pretty much non-existent in Western Europe.

Some of this explanation missed some key takeaways…. -White Lion was the name of the first ship that had kidnapped Africans (slaves) -1619 was the year White Lion arrived on VA shores, which was the radio station in the car ‘1619’ speaking to migration patterns. There’s a long lived theory that the migration pattern will constantly face destruction.

AFricans were used as slaves way before 1619.. the word slave comes from Slavic (white race)... the vast majority (way over 80%) of African slaves (which were not kidnapped btw) brought to the Americas during the trans Atlantic slave trade were sent to South America and Central America - The number that came to the States was minimal compared to even Jamaica. Even more Africans were sent to Arabic countries were their fate was worse - (I'm sure the male slaves would have been horrified and likely preferred death - you can look up what their future held). Yet this movie, and every single narrative presently, makes it seem like America was the end-all reason/origin/cause for slavery.. please, give it a rest.

Said ppl were sold into a slave trade on this country we now call America FACT! The name of said ship was THE WHITE LION…FACT! The use of red for each confrontation or danger is prolific throughout the movie too. Even shots of the earth from the moon shows red swirls under earth and eventually you see the sun at the top of earth. While the American flag appears disheveled at best… The use of green and yellow throughout is also notable. Usually used neutrally, however the young woman has red and green map above her bed and in the shed scene she has red and green bottles in the background but in Julia’s background there is red, blue and yellow and a tinge of green on a painting on the wall. I thought this very apt as Julia’s character is going through quite an emotional journey.

I loved this movie. It's horror was based in the very horror we're living through today. *SPOILERS** LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND is about modern societies that are so invariably broken that they're a hair's breath from collapse, yet living in total ignorance of this fact. In the U.S.A., especially, people have disconnected so thoroughly from each other that they "hate" those who aren't family-- they treat those who aren't in their tiny little bubbles indifferently or as potential enemies; therefore, when the need arrives for us to help each other, we likely won't. Instead, we choose to live in fantasy bunkers. We're glued to our devices and hyper-focus on stories that allow us to escape from reality and each other. We prefer the fantasies of connection and abandon each other when we are in the most need. As G.H. (Mahershala Ali) stated at the end of the movie, the country was under attack, a specific type of attack which would only be successful because of how broken our society already is at this point in time. "A simple three-stage maneuver that could topple a country's government from within. The first stage is isolation. Disable their communication and transportation. Make the target as deaf, dumb and paralyzed as possible, setting them up for the second stage. Synchronized chaos. Terrorize them with covert attacks and misinformation, overwhelming their defense capabilities, leaving their weapons systems vulnerable to extremists and their own military. Without a clear enemy or motive, people would start turning on each other. If done successfully, the third stage would happen on its own. A coup d état. Civil war. Collapse. This program was considered the most cost-effective way to destabilize a country. Because, IF THE TARGET NATION WAS DYSFUNCTIONAL ENOUGH, IT WOULD, IN ESSENCE, DO THE WORK FOR YOU. Whoever started this wants us to finish it." The characters are a microcosm of our country's population. Amanda (Julia Roberts) worked in client relations (she managed relationships), but professed to hating people. Towards the end of the movie, she finally confessed to Ruth (G.H.'s daughter), "Everyday, all day, my whole job is to understand people well enough so that I know how to lie to them, so I can sell them things they don't really want. And when you study people like that, when you really see the way they treat each other, well... You see what they do, and they do it without thinking about it. F*ck, I did it to you and your dad and I don't even really know why. We f*ck each other over, all the time, without even realizing it. We f*ck every living thing on this planet over and think it'll be fine because we use paper straws and order the free range chicken. And the sick thing is, I think deep down we know we're not fooling anyone. I think we know we're living a lie. An agreed upon mass delusion to help us ignore, and keep ignoring, how awful we really are." Ruth's response was that while she agreed with Amanda about all of that, "As awful as people might be, nothing's gonna change the fact that we are all we've got." In the end, Amanda shared that she didn't want to be that way. She didn't want to be a terrible person. "I know I said I hate people, but I'd do anything to have them back." When it came down to it, when she could have abandoned Ruth when the large herd of deer surrounded her, Amanda returned and stood with Ruth-- she protected her, as best she could. Remember, Ruth had shared with Amanda, a few minutes before, "You don't care that I'm here. And my mom is probably at the bottom of some ocean. I don't have anyone else in my life. I have nothing but them (her parents). Do you understand that? And I need my mom more than ever and I will probably never see her again." Amanda ended up standing with Ruth, as a mother would, because despite her wanting to not care about others, she actually did. All along, she'd cared, and it was just an aspect of the mass delusion that she'd convinced herself she didn't. When people can only succeed in a society whose rules dictate that success can only be attained by f*cking each other over, then the only way to survive under those rules is to disconnect from everyone, except the essential. We're programmed to believe that we do not need each other, that deep down we hate each other. Even Amanda's children had been programmed to believe that they weren't truly important to their parents. Rose knew that her parents wouldn't listen to her, because, "No one cares what I say." She truly believed no one really cared, and Archie, her brother, agreed with her assessment in such a blithe manner that it was clear he also felt the same. When the "nice guy" character, Clay (Ethan Hawke), abandoned the woman who was clearly in desperate need at the side of the road, he showed his true colors. He cared only for himself and getting back to his family. Archie secretly took pictures of Ruth, so he could jerk off to them. He violated her without a second thought. Amanda dismissed the possibility of G.H. being the owner of the house because... why would he be? He's black. It went unsaid, but the implication was thick in the air. When it became clearer that it was in fact his house, she made no move to switch the situation around and allow him and his daughter to come up from the basement. She continued to treat them as though they were encroaching on her and her family. As though, because they're black, they should live the way the help/servants/slaves did, in the basement. Ruth wanted a family with children to be kicked out of the house, even though she knew the world outside was in shambles. Rose was so disconnected from reality that her actions bordered on the narcissistic-- she acted without the concerns of others. She kept mentioning that the deer were behaving oddly, but she was ignored. In the end, she cared about nothing and no one other than getting to see the finale of FRIENDS. What else is there to care about? Yes, the country was going through its own finale, but why should she care when it hadn't demonstrated that it cared about her? The only human character who seemed to care about others was G.H. He endangered himself to ensure that Archie got medicine. He didn't insist on Amanda and her family leaving the house or, at the very least, moving into the basement. He had the gun. He could have forced the issue at any time; yet, he chose not to. He could have returned for Ruth and took her surreptitiously to the secret bunker. Yet, he chose to tell Clay about what was happening, thereby giving Clay, Amanda and the children the possibility of safety. How many G.H.'s exist in our country? Are there enough people like him to counter the scores of millions who unthinkingly behave like Clay, Amanda, Ruth, Archie, Danny (Kevin Bacon), and Rose? Unlike the humans in the movie, the deer grouped together when they sensed turmoil. The disparate herds chose to band together for safety, which is why the group grew larger every time it appeared. The buck alpha of the herd tried to communicate with the humans, maybe in an attempt to convey the danger going on or even to have them join the herd for safety, but humans couldn't understand, because humans have grown so disconnected from reality. Even though the deer weren't attacking them, they responded with palpable fear and scared the deer away. LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND is about how f*cked in the head we've gotten and how truly f*cked we'll be if/when sh*t hits the fan. Humans collectively need each other and this is an essential truth that far too many have forgotten.

This is an excellent response which I enjoyed reading, interesting how you mentioned the deer being analogous to how people are so easily turned away even when trying to help just because they are different. To me i was taking the movie too literally perhaps and wondering the exact cause for everything (as if I were surviving myself) but the movie appeared to be more of a social commentary.

The abstract painting kept changing with each chapter. At first it was four spikes, and Amanda stood in front of the tallest, which I took to mean that she was the self-proclaimed leader of her family of four. Then Ruth stood in front of that same spike, and by then we know she is also formidable. Then the painting changed to a downward slope, then scattered haze like static on a screen. So I think Amanda and Ruth standing in front of the tallest spike, which was the second along the x-axis if it was a graph (like George was describing the ebbing and flowing toward a downward curve in society's decline), was like a time marker for how close they were to the end. The first spike had occurred (the cyberattack causing isolation), then they were in the midst of coordinated chaos (the next spike in a series). Then the painting changed to a curve, indicating the loss of trust, the decline of society as people turned on each other. Then it became the static indicating obliteration of life as they knew it (the bombs). I also wondered if the red hallway that Rosie walked down was a metaphor for the birth canal, with her as the child trying to return to the womb, the origin of her innocence. To rest in a place full of nourishment (I didn't notice all the racist brands that would feed her!) and pretend comfort (Friends, the fake view out the window). It sounds like her family will find her, since we hear them calling to her from outside the house before she goes to the bunker. But since she turns the TV on, will she remain oblivious if their calls become cries for help should a bomb fall closer? Does that make Rosie "The Last One"? Would this innocent and utterly inept ostrich with her head in the sand become the legacy left behind? A dismal consolation. We deserve better, but so does she. She warned them at every stage, even stated they should go to the house on the hill early on, but she was ignored. She is the canary in the coal mine who lived.

I haven't seen anyone connect the dots with the girl's story about the man who believed in God. The end of that story is, "I sent a message, I sent a boat and I sent a plane (all things that happened in the movie). What more did you want?" Only the youngest, most innocent character in the movie (who was largely ignored by everyone else) was saying that it was all a message. She alone felt drawn to the fully stocked bunker--a place of refuge and plenty. The last words of the movie are, "I'll be there for you".

Blue is blue collar, or representing the “working class” family. The family seems to be well off, but is using an Airbnb vacation home instead of going to another one of theirs. G. H. and his daughter are well off as we can tell by the things they own in the movie and by the jabs Amanda throws about money. We know G. H. is a pretty important guy in his line of work, and we can assume he is mega successful. We see a mix of a blue and red on them because they are wealthy, but not wealthy enough to have been “warned” as G. H. said in the movie about the chaos around them. The Thorne house is red because red collar refers to government workers. They are usually rich, and the Thorne family probably evacuated or loaded up their private jet.
